Whether you need to type a resume, a letter, or a bibliography, it can get done fast if you learn how to control the keys efficiently.
Step 1: Position your fingers on the keys
Position your fingers on the keyboard. Put your left little finger on the "A" and your right little finger on the semicolon. Lay your fingers one at a time on each consecutive key and place your thumbs on the space bar.
    Tip
The F and J keys on most keyboards have small bumps to easily identify where your two pointer fingers should stay without having to look down.
Step 2: Learn the left hand keys
Learn what fingers control which keys. The left index finger controls the F, G, R, T, 4, 5, V, and B. The left middle finger controls the D, E, 3, and C. The left ring finger controls the S, W, 2, and x. The left little finger controls the A, Q, 1, Z, and shift.
Step 3: Learn the right hand keys
Learn what keys the fingers on the right hand type. The fingers on the right hand control the same pattern of keys as you learned on the left side.
    Step 4: Use your thumb
Press the space bar with your right thumb.
Step 5: Master the shift keys
Master the shift keys with your little fingers. Press the shift key while simultaneously pressing the letter of choice to type a capital letter. If the letter is pressed by the right hand, use the left shift key, and vice versa.
    Step 6: Sit up straight
Sit up straight with both feet on the floor. Position your chair and keyboard so your arms are at a 90 degree angle and are parallel to your legs. Keep your elbows next to your body and your head straight.
    Tip
Try not to look down at the keys.
    Step 7: Practice
Practice typing. You can learn for free online by visiting websites with touch typing tutorials. Learning the art of typing will save you tons of time over the hunt and peck method.
    Did You Know?
The letters on old typewriters used to be listed alphabetically. In the late 1800s, Christopher Latham Sholes rearranged the keys to prevent jamming.

Hello, Howcast. It's been literal years. You were the first UA-cam channel I remember regularly watching when I was small. I actually still remember some of the things you taught me, like good spots to live underground, how to tie a cherry stem in my mouth, how to cast a love spell, what to do in a bear encounter, how to conquer my fears. You've been crossing my mind more often as of late. Then I saw this in my recommendations despite not even mention you for years. I just thought it was cool. Thank you for being a part of my childhood

Another interesting fact is that even after the QWERTY layout was introduced most typewriters didn't have keys for the number one or or zero. The lower case 'L' doubled as the number one and the upper case 'O' doubled as the number zero. For an exclamation point you would type an apostrophe then back space and type a period, it was crude but it worked.

Some off the fastest typers don't even use that way of typing. When I learned to start typing blind or home way I believe it's called, it took some time, but you get used to it. The F and J have bumps, but like I said in the beginning some place thier fingers on other keys. Eventually you learn to use what's most comfortable for you. Practise makes perfect;)

Thanks for your very interesting post, here are a few more tips on how to play the piano…
Try practicing about 1 hour every day, or just half an hour if you short of time.
Do more practice whenever you have more time. For example, on weekends you can do more than an hour, like two or 3, or even more. This is very helpful because it pulls you out of the routine of piano playing, and lets you practice more and perfect the pieces you play.
Try not to look at the dynamics in a piece, as rules you cannot break. For example, if the piece starts with an 'mp' (mezzo-piano) it only means 'moderately soft' these dynamics don't have specific volume levels. If you are practicing, you don't need to play accordingly and then have a difficulty hearing yourself, you should only play as it tells you when you are actually trying to play it properly.
Practice sight-reading and don't worry about making mistakes. This can be very helpful, because it's almost like scanning a paragraph and looking at the picture. It helps you to understand what the passage is trying to convey before you actually read it and lets you know what comes next. This is the same with music, and it can help you stop making mistakes.
(I discovered about these and more on Denelle Piano Lesson website )

I've learnt the art of touch-typing, and I'm glad I did it in the end. Initially, before, I thought I could never do it knowing how difficult it is to learn, and it is difficult, but I did it because I know the reaps of rewards you gain out of it afterwards other than to just type fast and accurately. It takes a lot of mental effort to learn to touch-type, and even once you learn it, you'll be typing up to 20 wpm for at least the next couple of weeks; in fact, you'll possibly be typing a lot slower than your previous method. It will be painful at first because your fingers are getting use to their new positions, but they'll slowly find their way. For me, after about 3 months of touch-typing, I was able to type over 50 wpm with 100% accuracy. Now, I can type close to 70 wpm with 100% accuracy; in other words, I'm just glad I've learn it, and know for a fact that most people in this world don't have this amazing skill. You'll be amazed just how confident you'll become whenever you're using the computer. My only regret is to not learning it a long-time back. Not easy to learn, yet not impossible either. Just takes patience and dedication.

As someone who types an average of 100+ WPM, there is no "officially faster" way of typing. For example, I never really use my pinky except for the left shift key and control key. Just do what's comfortable and keep on doing it, and you'll eventually be able to type fast.

Why the keys were actually changed was because of the more oftenly used keys were positioned in such a way that the user would not be able to use them with speed or control, then the keys were rearranged in order for the more oftenly used keys to be easier to access/control than the other keys which were placed on the outskirts of the keyboard interface. But very good tutorial really helped a lot!

Understanding the vertical alignment for each finger and the grooves on f and h is the best way to not look at keyboard and not get lost. Maybe keyboards would be better if the characters were 3 D indented then it would be even easier to feel your way.

Fun fact: There is literally no reason for a alphabet to be arranged in the order that it is arranged in, it could have just as well been arranged like qazxswedcvfrtgbnhyujmkiolp and no-one would question it.

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever learn this 10-finger system... I type 90-100 WPM with my own weird method. My left hand pretty much stays in place, fingers moving around quickly on the keyboard, while I move my right hand a lot more, pretty much only using the index finger on that hand... Guess anything works once you get used to it :)

    Gaming Way:
-Right/Left hand always on mouse (Depends on your dominant hand. Though this will be written for specifically righties)
    Left hand (Keyboard):
    -Pinkie controls shift
    -Ring finger controls A
-Middle finger controls W and S
    -Index controls D
    -Thumb controls spacebar
    Right hand (Mouse):
-Thumb controls side buttons (If you have any on your mouse)
-Index finger controls left click and any buttons next to it (Like on the Logitech G502)/scroll wheel/any buttons under it
-Middle finger controls right click and any buttons next to it
-Ring and pinkie fingers resting on the side (usually)
As previously mentioned this is for right handed people though if you are left handed you can try swapping the mouse controls

Touch typing is really faster, if you look at some of the craziest speedsters of the keyboard - who manage speeds like 160 wpm -, they type with all of their fingers. The problem is that the keys placement forces you to do bizarre movements and use a lot your little fingers, which can tire your fingers fast if you’re trying to type a long text.
If you really want to learn touch typing though, you can always learn a new key disposition at the same time, like Dvorak or Maltron (since I’m french, I use bépo). While hard as fuck to start, you’ll be blown away to realize you did in 2 months what you couldn’t do after years of azerty practice (faster, more fluid and accurate typing, as well as never having to look at the keyboard). And that, is the power of touch typing.

I can type faster than all of my class, even without looking. But when you pointed out we have to memorize what fingers control most keys, the truth is I only use my:
    Left-
Pointer finger, to type most keys
    Ring finger, to press Caps
    Right-
Middle finger, to type most keys
    Thumb, to add spaces

  • @Denisowator
    @Denisowator 6 років тому +4

I never actually followed that "rule", where you have to position your fingers on the keyboard like that (in a straight line). And now I'm typing an average of 65 wpm (words per minute) (without looking at the keyboard).
I can also do this while talking to someone, and that only takes me down to 50wpm.
And no, I don't want a medal. I'll just type one from symbols and print it out. ;)

+David Well you should need practice doing this so you can do faster i dont do that way and i dont look at the keyboard then the screen over and over all i do is either look at the keyboard and after each sentence correct the mistakes if needed,or i just look at the screen.

+David I write average 120WPM, but I want to get faster -- I do not even use all the fingers myself, left hand is fine, but I only use the index and middle finger on my right, with thumb for spacebar. Well, my point is that speed doesn't matter, but efficiency -- my right hand gets tired sooner because I pressure it a lot more.

I was curious to see what is considered the "proper" fingering as I learned from an age much younger than most people and have typed the same way for eleven years. Maybe it's just my hand size or my keyboards, but I do everything the same except the left-hand bottom row; it doesn't seem very intuitive to me. My index takes C, my middle X, and my ring Z, and when I test out the "proper" way my whole hand has to move out of the way for the finger to be able to reach the key (they have to cross behind each other slightly). My method keeps the trend in the rest of my fingering to prefer slighter and quicker movement of ideally only the one finger, like for instance typing the G key that is just a comfortable move of only the finger in question and the rest of my hand remains in the same position. Idk, am I crazy?
