With respect to your question about being blacklisted. After 9/11, Clear Channel communications owned almost all radio stations in the US and they sent out a memo banning the playing of certain songs by various artists. For Rage Against the Machine, they just went ahead and banned all of their songs from being played on radio stations. So there you go.
there was also an incident on SNL i think, where they were scheduled to play a few songs and got shut down after one, or something like that. don't remember exactly
@@user-vc5rp7nf8f they were banned after playing (live of course) and displaying an upside down American flag. They were told not to do this an uhh well… this is the band who made a song that repeats “f*** you I won’t do what ya tell me” soo… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@rickbaulsthey were also banned from the BBC lol. They went on air and did a live performance of I believe “Bulls on Parade” and they were told not to use the one F word in the song but they went ahead and said it anyway
What was awake when this was released would not be what is considered awake today. Ratm we’re not for either American political party but they were far left in their politics. “Awake” right wing clowns might think otherwise but they don’t deal in reality anyway
This one is fire, and they been speaking on shit since the get go. They did catch some shit but not like they would today, they were a little ahead of the internet.
Did they catch shit? Sleep now in the fire....official music video (1999) if you want to see the time they shut down NYSE in the middle of the trading day. Post 9/11 public radio stations banned their entire discography. This song being at the end of the matrix (1999) is a hint about what the movie is really about. Keep em coming, and keep learning
Saw a recent video of tom morellos pedalboard. It's surprisingly simple. Wah, phase, pair of delays, eq for boost and that crazy sound was the digitech whammy. He also has his pickup selector wired with the center position off. He flicks the switch like he's strumming to get a real staccato sound. No samples, no synths, no turntables just a modded guitar and pedals.
Yep, while he does use a few effects, the crazy sounds he makes are mostly from crazy techniques he's come up with when he's bored and just like, hmm, I wonder what happens if I touch the lead directly to the strings, or do a pick scrape with an Allen key
Next is simple: "Bullet in your head", Pinkpop festival (93 or 94 can't remember)... Zack delivers... The whole 1st album is bangers over bangers, true gem. Another I love to is "Renegades" where they cover other song and do feat's with rappers like Cypress Hill... RATM is one of the greatest band in the world, close to Pink Floyd in my heart.
In Canada, at least the Vancouver area where I was, this was all over the radio all the time as well as a lot of other powerful singles from them. Top that off with them using Thích Quảng Đức on the cover of their debut album that hit every record chart and it's safe to say they did indeed wake up a big part of my generation.
I've always been torn about how they used his image. I know their intentions were good. But the record companies made millions off of that album and it's album cover.
You gotta keep em coming! Not just for the fun, or your personal exposure to different music. We're all aware how the algorithms work and if a reaction pops off, the rest follows. This music needs to spread even further to reaction channels! I think it's a net benefit
Keep the Rage reactions coming! If you haven’t done these already, I’d suggest Freedom (official music video and if you have time, the live performance at the Battle of Mexico City), Take the Power Back, Fistful of Steel (live 1993), Guerrilla Radio, and a couple lesser known songs Calm Like a Bomb, and Mic Check. Definitely keep the lyrics or closed captions up for each of them. Rage’s entire catalogue was essentially banned from radio play after 9/11, but it didn’t hurt their popularity. In fact, they were just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week. The guitarist, Tom Morello, was the only band member to go and represent the group. He gave a great speech: ua-cam.com/video/I1_v_CILgp0/v-deo.htmlsi=9UcJa90SP0oBzcAK
If you couldn’t tell by the video, this song is used at the end of the matrix. I can’t hear it now without thinking of that but this is a GREAT song! Please check out the ghost of Tom Joad
Tom Morello is a guitar pedal God! His sounds come from his feet hitting those pedal's. If you want to get an idea of what's in Morello's head, check out his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame speech here..... ua-cam.com/video/3DSf53xiYOg/v-deo.html. (fast forward to 6:25)
Back in the day, this particular song didn't get played on the radio. But I do remember hearing 'Bulls on Parade' & 'Killing in the Name' on the radio (heavily edited & usually only during the late night DJ's show). But I don't remember anyone 'going after' them to try to shut them down or anything. During that time the pearl-clutchers were more focused on the 'devil-worshipping' metal bands, iirc. Also this was GenX time--so the adults barely knew where we were 1/2 the time, let alone what we were listening to. If there wasn't like a pentagram or the devil on the album cover, I don't think they noticed what music was coming in & out of the house.
I think if you wanna understand even half of the impact and how the government and those in power reacted to rage against the machine in general -- yeah they didn't like how big they were at ALL. The best overview video I've seen that would be short enough for a react is by Alternative Press on youtube - Rage Against The Machine: 10 MASSIVE RATM Political Moments. But they have a long history with the government and powers that be.
Yeah, they did shady shit back in the day. If you don’t know look into Fred Hampton, they murdered him asleep on his mattress with a No knock. Zach got that line you’re not gonna do me like you did my man Fred Hampton.
Great reaction! Would love to see some more Tool reactions - there are more accessible songs than what you've already seen. Might I suggest The Grudge or 46&2? I suggest lyric videos, but not the music videos (they're just kinda distracting from the music).
I hate to pile on but people who listen to RATM without a base level of knowledge miss out on so much. It's all still happening - probably worse than ever. The break in the middle when Zach recites the CIA (maybe FBI) memo should make it click for everyone.
I liked the band when I was younger. In highschool when it first came out it touched my youth rage and loved the music. But as I aged I realized the message was preaching for anarchy with no answers. The USA has its issues, the human condition is flawed but going communism is not the way. If Rage made more music about self introspection with that music we can turn this ship around. 👍

This also basically happened to a few artists, most notably the (Dixie) Chicks.
Yep. When I was a teenager, you had to know the underground radio stations to listen to Rage.

You can't say all music is true art, this is art on steroids! The introspection induced by the lyrics is untouched!

Not just pedals, he also creates effects with wiping the guitar strings, and using the kill switch on the guitar.

The guitar part is a double octave up pedal. Probably with a phasor and distortion pedal knowing toms style.

To make the sound is Tom Morello using pedals
