Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the explanation. Rare to find videos that actually try to answer the question you have instead of talking around the subject for an hour and then just end.
I started on the gamepad (PS4 controller, then later an Xbone1 controller) simply because I wanted FF14 to feel like an extension of my childhood memories of playing FF1-6 on a gamepad. But eventually I went mouse/kb because I'd played World of Warcraft so much, my brain had just hardwired gaming that way on a PC.
Thank you !! Tired of keyboard player saying they are best because yaddee yadda ... Controller feels more ergonomic to me. It's just for communication that I don't have an USB keyboard to make it easy. But the rest is equal.
I tried really hard to use a controller for FFXIV but i went back to M/K for the simple fact , I've been MK for most of my career. It really comes down to what you are natural with.
Just found your channel today, great stuff so far and subbed :) One note I'd mention with controllers having access to regular hotbars as well, you *can* still use items on them, though it's not nearly as convenient as with kb/m. But L1+R3 Click will put the game in "virtual mouse" mode, with L2/R2 acting as right/left click, and the right stick moving the mouse cursor around. Or, since I play on PC, I have the best of both worlds. I play with controller, particularly a Steam Controller, but more recently the Steam Deck, so instead of the game's built in sluggish virtual mouse, I just use the right track pad as a mouse (on Steam Controller, my default layout is set so it constantly holds right-click whenever I touch the pad, so it handles camera movement similar to using right stick on a controller, then I click a button and it switches modes so the mouse cursor can now move freely. On Steam Deck, since it has a right stick, I use that for camera control and just use the right pad directly as a mouse, no need to shift back and forth between camera controller or free cursor.) And I can also set up several radial menus with ~20 buttons each to handle deeper keybinds, in case I want to assign 1 to = and their shift/ctrl/alt modifiers and various combinations of them together. The only thing I prefer using a regular mouse for, is when I'm working on the HUD layout, but even that the trackpads are adequate for the task. I've tried playing on the normal keyboard/mouse interface and while doable, it's definitely not near as comfortable to me, and this is coming from someone who's been playing PC games since the early 90s. The controller layout in XIV is just so shockingly intuitive compared to any other MMO, even controller-supporting ones like Elder Scrolls Online feel better on mouse/keyboard than they do on controller.
Hey thanks! I've seen your other comment on the "mods" video as well. Very insightful stuff. Figured I'd just reply to this one. The steam deck sounds interesting I've never really looked into it. Glad you liked the videos! 😅
you've touched upon one of my favorite topics to talk about to new players. i'd also suggest you consider the difference between legacy and standard camera movement, and also how to use both mouse and keyboard and controller at the same time.
Great video and informational! I play 90% controller, 10% k&m. I have cleared all content on controller and it's my preferred way to play. There is no 'best' way to play , and people should just use what is most comfortable for them. The single biggest pro con both types?: -M&K you can use strafe to move, letting you have full uptime on 'gaze' mechanics. Controller I have to untarget. -Controller I can sit like 'L' from death note, or sprawled out on a beanbag chair in the middle of an ultimate raid. I almost never misclick like a keyboard might, because it's far more likely you would hit a wrong key vs hold a controller upside down.
Controller for me is way superior for game play, if you organise your skills properly and your muscle memory gets where you want it to be, it's by all accounts superior since we are using these terms in this video. The only thing that the keyboard does better by a long shot is the typing of course. I hooked up an Apple slim keyboard to my PS5 just for chatting... boom, happy days.
I feel like I react better to things on controller, I think it’s a tad bit more annoying with mmo related things like chatting and general UI navigation but controllers nail combat for me.
yeah, me too, i got and small bluetooth mouse and keyboard just to chat, and navigate somethings in the hud, cuz mouse its faster, like in the craft log for example. but combat? controller all the way,
Sorry for this wall of text In my opinion M+K is superior for one important reason:The existance of mmo mice! The way I play,my fingers are 98% of the time on 3 of the 4 directional buttons:little finger on A (strafe left),middle on D (strafe right) and ring finger on either W or S! This is something you can't have on a controller, unless you completely ignore the d-pad for binds, which leads to other issues though. I left one finger, the index finger and this does almost all of the work.I mapped my spells mostly to the area that the index finger is closer to:F,G,C,V,R,T. This allows me for 100% movement and button pressing. Of course these buttons are not enough for an mmo.I said before that with M+K I can move 98% of the time. The reason is that I have also binds on Q,E,2,3,4,5 and X. Now 5 is easy to press with my index finger but for the rest I have to sacrifice a movement option. So that is where I put my long cooldowns that I press once every 1 or 2 mins, or buttons that are long casts or buttons that are by themselves a movement skill like Hissatsu Yaten for Samurai. Now,about the mmo mouse,I have my oGCD (or abilities as the game calls them) mapped there. This gives a nice flow where my left hand (keyboard) has to press a button every 2.0 to 2.5 seconds and my right hand (mouse) fills the gaps in between. In order for me to achieve all this in a controller,I would have to sacrifice the d-pad almost completely but this leads to not-enough-buttons issue. I gave about 30hours trying to configure my spells this way but I just couldnt so I abandoned the idea. I do understand that controller is comfy and myself I currently play FF13 usually from my bed, which is something M+K would never be able to match, but for FF14,whenever I have to fight I will always prefer M+K for everything I said above, which could be sumerized with:"on M+K I can move freely whenever I want and keep doing my rotation"
I started with keyboard and switched to controller. Never looked back since. RPG are meant for controllers. Your arm is just tired with a keyboard, also seating position. Controller is freedom and flexibility, cross hotbar can do 32 buttons which is perfect.
So I use the ff14 keypad I just got recently, it has been nice setting up all my abilities and feeling like I don’t ever need to click an ability with my mouse like I did with the keyboard. On keyboard alone I used 1-5, qertfg and f1-f5. I had to click my abilities that wasn’t on those buttons and it was getting tiring trying to optimize my rotation like playing nin for example with the amount of ogcd u have. I did have my computer set up for controller and tried it but was intimidated about how to set it up and kinda gave up quickly, I was always usto raiding like on world of Warcraft on keyboard and so I didn’t want to risk being really bad on controller. I’m kinda sad I didn’t really try out controller for real it looks very fun and unique. If my keypad dies or brakes it be hard getting a new one as they don’t really sell them all the time. I guess I’ll try controller again if that happens hopefully not for a while. Learning about the subtarget thing is nice to know. I use mouse over macros for my healers and didn’t know how it worked for controller. Ty for the video was very educational
Great video, I'm just writing because...I can and no one has to read this dribble unless they want to learn something (about kbm in 2024 mostly). When it comes to targetting, in 2024 at least, mouse and keyboard has probably virtually everything controller does, and better. But I will be clear: in many cases it's a wash because "needed" actions and reactions speeds are almost always doable on controller. The main thing KBM dominates at for me is being a god tier spot healer, or spot any action. Other than a scenario where I'm resource starved (almost never as WHM/AST), if you suddenly take damage, the speed that which I picked your name out from the party list and weaved an ogcd to get you back up is something else. Only resource consumption or other considerations might have me (intentionally) pick a slower course of course of action, but if I feel I have plenty of tetra/essential dignity charges, then you're getting that HP back in less than a GCD every time. What is also afforded to on kbm is also because I have very expensive tier equipment (not explicitly for FFXIV), so I have access to a lot of keys and mouse buttons (not a normal MMO mouse). In a full party, cycling to someone "in the middle" of the list I'm sure is fast enough when your brain does the count and rapidly executes "scroll from bottom up 3 times" etc etc, but nothing beats a flat click no matter where it is, and throw out the heal. For targetting in general, PC users get to execute far fewer keypresses to get "directly" to what they want to act on, to return to what they were doing with less mental load in planning how they will do it. When it comes to hotbars and keys, your analsis was...not pragmatic at all. Even keyboard users don't actually let their keys go that far down the number row. Beyond 5 is rare. What actually happens is a rebind of Q, E, R, T, and F. And depending on keyboard design (at least I did this), F1-F4 can be an easy jump with unique edges you don't ever look down for. But futher, simply counting the number of actions and comparing to the number of hotbars and cross bars and saying "they all fit" even including role + jobs way off. If you had over 4 cross bars, how do you access anything over the 4th? On mouse and keyboard, you actually have people with devices that utilize over hotbars 5 and 6 with directly assigned keys (with modifiers). That isn't to say every action from every prior hotbar is filled --- that's more of a controller mentality -- but the groupings and where you want skills and actions to appear matters as well so we dip into those. There is one real advantage of a controller that a pure keyboard and mouse doesn't have which is analog 360 movement relative to camera. On a PC in general, when you have the entire game set to operate in PC mode, running towards the camera normally does a very very slow backpedal. The "fix" that generally works (I did this for years) is to ensure you click "legacy" style control, but that actually only gives you a full speed run backwards if it's directly back. If you also need to run diagonal backwards it'll be the slow backpedal. Controller players naturally run full speed in all directions, even towards the camera and can still see clearly behind them. Effectively over time, players learn to "hybrid" deal with it and may not even with legacy and just prefer to 360 turn and run when they actually need to run full speed in a backwards direction. It's easy enough to do, but does make you lose sight of the boss and makes it harder to retain room orientation since you're spinning around. The absolute best controller combination for movement and keybind access in FFXIV for a low combined price of aournd $500 is the Cyborg II and SwiftpointZ mouse. 13 button (+5 deep click function) mouse, plus the analog stick on the Cyborg II means you move with your thumb giving all 4 of your fingers full key access to 22 buttons (your thumb has access to another 8 buttons, but only one fully while moving). With that, you easily have your hotbars covered, plus so many quality of life functions.
I'm kind of new to MMOs except for RuneScape back in the days of old I have always preferred keyboard and mouse controls for Minecraft rather than a controller it's just better in every way. But I grew up with a controller in my hand and I'm thinking that's the way to go for this game
I play with "kinda" both Since I started FF14 my Brother recommended me the "TACTICAL ASSAULT COMMANDER F14 FINAL FANTASY® XIV EDITION" and was blown away how amazing it is Best Part, you can use it in other games too ;)
what bothers me in the keyboard is that if i press "s" my charcters move superslow back, and when i move the joystick down, my character autoturn and move in that direction, so there is no slow movment. and also, i find very dificult to move using awsd(using 3 to 4 fingers) and circle enemies at the sime time i should be pressing 12345 and etc, put ctrl and shift in the mix then? a nightmare to my cordination, as in the controles, movment its all made by one finger, my thumb, and the rest its free to use all of the comands.
What you need to do. When using mouse and keyboard, go to settings and change the movement to legacy. In the video i am using legacy movements. This will make WSAD control your character like the Joystick. Edit: it will take practice but my index finger covers 4,5,F,G,T, and X. my ring finger 1,2, 3, Q, and TAB. My middle finger hardly ever leaves W. And then i use the right click to steer 😂.
Myself I'm more of a keyboard & mouse type of gamer but will change to using controller if it feels more natural to me. In my Final Fantasy XI days I used keyboard & mouse. However in Final Fantasy XIV I prefer using Xbox controller for playing but for certain things like market board will use keyboard & mouse to refine my searches. For Diablo style of games I will 100% use controller. Since those type of games tends to use mouse left click in order to move your char around which is odd to me. For racing games it's 100% controller as well. For shooter type games it's 100% keyboard & mouse.
i find that you don't even need to use all the skills as black mage, they are very smart with how they've made this game, you only ever need the first 16 cross bars to be effective even when they add new moves because the new moves are always set up to be improvements on older moves, only time i use the second set of cross bars is if i'm going back to do earlier mission in which you have to use weaker spells such as fire 1 and ice 1, they actually put a lot of thought into button arrangement and accessibility for console as well as p.c.
I played on ps4 and currently playing on ps5, i have a mmo mouse and keyboard but I just can't get used to it and I can definitely feel how clunky it is on controller.
ffxiv the only mmo that i use a controller, square enix controller system layout is by far the best. hitting keys while doing positionals isnt ideal and puts a strain on the fingers. if you head to options you can extend the the hot bar so instead of using R1 to switch to the second hotbar you can hold R2 first than L2 to access the second hotbar on the right side, than hold L2 first and R2 on the second hot bar left side. you can even add another hotbar by holding R2 and L2 at the same time to open another hotbar. this might seem complicated on text but once you play on these settings life gets better
Im a keyboard and mouse player since arr, but I tried controller a few times now and cant stick with it unfortunately. I just cant handle to use d pad to use abilitys 😢
I feel you man. I've been playing mmos since SWG pre-cu and using the dpad for abilities definitely didn't feel good. When the game came out to the xbox, I started playing it with the elite series 2 controller and decided to put the four dpad buttons as my four back buttons. I then set the dpad to R3, L3, RB, and LB. I now really enjoy playing it on controller.
I feel like if I only had the buttons available at up to heavensward it'd be doable but they've added way to many extra buttons to press for controller play to be... Fun... Even on pc i have half my buttons macroed as they're not realistic to press while actively following the fights
Honestly, I love the controller. Been playing Ps4 controller on PC (idk Dualshock just feels better.) I also play on steam deck, so that helps. I feel like they are equally viable, which is nice. I just can't decide which I prefer lol. The cross bar is an awesome system, and I definitely have put more time into controller.
My issue as a healer is cycling through my own party in a raid. With mouse and keyboard I hover the mouse over the player that needs healing and press to heal. I can move up and down the list in a small fraction of a second and get my heals off in priority. With controller I have to tab through. In large raids I may have to make four clicks to get to the next heal. I’m always counting how many clicks, is it faster to click up or down to get to the next heal I need to make. It takes noticeably longer. With m and k my mouse is over the character box and it’s done before I even think. I have the player list directly to the right of my action bars. So generally I use joypad for solo content but in raids and dungeons I move to m and k. As a healer who has to target up to eight players it is essential.
You can do the same with a controller. Just d-pad down will highlight the party member right below you, similar to hovering your mouse over them/their name, and you can fire off a heal and it will automatically go right back to being targeted on whatever your active target is. Or you can hit "A" (or whatever the controller equivalent you're using, like X on a PSX style layout) and it will then set that player as your active target, in case you need to send them several heals/buffs/etc in a row. Then to get back on the enemy target, either L1+dpad to select them again from the enemy list and hit "A" (or equivalent), or in your gamepad customization layout, you can set Right-stick click to "Assist Target" so if you're hard targeted on another player, you can then click the right stick and it will switch your target to whatever that player has targeted. Technically it works for mobs too, if you're fighting a boss and you click R3, it will shift the target to the player it currently has in it's sights (typically the tank, but I wouldn't always rely on that) so you can heal them, then click R3 again and back to targeting the boss. I've actually set up macros 98 and 99 to use for my L3 and R3. Macro 99 is my assist, it's /target (I have tank sorted to be right below me for all my class roles) followed by /assist, that way I never have to d-pad down to target the tank before being able to assist. But if you don't want to dedicate a macro for that, just setting R3 up as "Assist Target" is generally as convenient, and if I played healer I'd probably stick with that instead of the macro that way I could just R3 while targeted on the boss if I needed to buff for an incoming tank buster, then R3 again to be back on the boss for dpsing. Macro 98 is a bit more complex but it essentially will either hop into the first available multi-seat mount that a party member has out, or if that's not available, does a mount roulette, and finally turns level sync on. Great for fates, I can just swoop in, click L3 and I dismount (performing mount roulette while mounted, dismounts) and level sync immediately, ready to do the fate. In you character settings there's a section for role sorting, that's how the party list sorts based on the role you're playing. Regardless of role, you are always at the top of the party list, so you can always have the tank right below you, and the two dpses below them, for example. Or as a tank maybe you'd prefer the healer right below you, in case you need to do some mitigation or use something like Clemency to heal them after a party/raid wide hit to make sure they don't die and can keep everyone else alive.
I found it very helpful to edit the party list for this. Generally you want to heal your tanks right? Then the DPS and then the healers. So i set up my party list UI like this Tank DPS DPS Healer Healer DPS DPS Tank Like this, quickly slapping a shield or a regen on a tank makes it lots easier.
My pc can't run the game even at minimum, so I'm on PS4 and have been playing the franchise that way since PS1 days. I find it more intuitive, but would like to get better at targeting, which is a reason I won't play a healer role, so as not to let anyone down! 😅
Thanks for the vid, really enjoyed it..I'm a monk main and I really want to try setting up a controller but kinda scared that it'll make me bad for a while :(
You do know you can change the keyboard control WASD to act like a joypad controller, and turning on prioritise cone rather than distance makes targeting on m and k much better (why it isn’t default I really don’t know) it’s just two little button presses and you’re done. The main ways you see m and k as inferior are fixed.
I used controller since 2013, everything is good except 2 things. Astrologian is difficult to play since you need to toggle party member list for card buffs, will take more than 1 sec to weave. On uwu I need to depend on my static to call out Titan knockback, because my I can't turn my camera fast enough to see where is the safe spot. Overall controller is viable option and I cleared ultimates with it with orange parse
I'm guessing the decision on which one is mostly based on your desk, how you like to play other games and other things not related to the game itself, like working with a pc and not wanting to play with mouse and keyboard because of it or the other way around.
Ok i use controller mainly because i suck so much ass at double-tasking that i have a hard time using mouse and keyboard at the same time Also controller cycling is hella wonky sometimes, especially depending on your settings
I’m just starting with the trial, but something I appreciate with the controller is that I can stay mobile at all times. Having to stop moving to hit a hotkey, even if only for a second, is kind of a bummer. Don’t see people mention this so maybe there is a way to hit your hotkeys on the move with kbm that I just haven’t realized.
I've never once stopped moving to hit a hotkey. I have 48 binds on my Razer Naga mouse. Every hotkey is my mouse thumb plus a modifier (shift, Ctrl, alt).
same as Baby Emma, even without that mouse you can still set hotkeys that do not stop you from moving. No offense but it sounds more like a lack of skill on M/KB for you which requires practice to improve on.
@@glmorten however that's not just "mouse & keyboard", that's Keyboard and a specialized mouse. Not everyone will want to buy a specialty mouse for the game. That said, such a combination is likely to give you an edge in combat.
i lived enough to see people talking about skill issue on an final fantasy mmo, jesus. everybody can press a fuckton of keys, but it's not chill as do the same at a good gamepad, so yeah can or not be a skill issue.
Great video. I have physical issues sitting in my computer chair too long sometimes and am investigating the option to be able to head over to the couch and play on ps5. If I do this I am curious if I will be able to mentally switch between the two controls or if I will just go full controller and plug that into my pc when playing on the pc. Can the ps5 use mouse and keyboard for control? I know mouse and keyboard work in some games if they are dev supported and this seems like the kind of game that would support that option.
It is definitely possible. I played from the couch for years. Wireless controller and wireless keyboard. Now that you mention it i kinda miss the couch 😆
@@creely That is keyboard for typing, does the game also support full mouse and keyboard control on the consoles? I am probably more likely to switch to controller than I am to deal with m/k on the couch, but am curious.
Yeah both the ps4 and ps5 have full m/k support. The game is identical on both pc and console. Anything you can do on one you can do on the other. Baring mods and addons.
KEYBOARD -Tank [A] -Mdps [A] -Rdps [A (magical S)] -Healer [S] -Non-combat activities: S+ CONTROLLER -Tank [S-] -Mdps [S] -Rdps [A (physical S)] -Healer [B] -Non-combat activities: [D] :::VERDICT::: Use both depending on what you're doing for ideal results. If you're doing combat, use a controller unless you're a healer. If you're crafting, farming, doing Gold Saucer, or anything else then use a keyboard; a controller is awful for these and takes forever to navigate to things which you could press 1 button to reach on a keyboard
I actually do. I mention the "3rd" cross bar at 6:14 . This setting I mention is under the "Extended crossbar" settings. What I do not mention is that the cross bar can be shown full time. I don't use that so I forgot to add it in. If that is what you meant than nice catch! I did forget to add that in :)
I use both. But I just a keyboard and mouse to try and learn and if I can't at least i can use text chat easier than using the ps4 text input which is stupid slow lol
try to use heart of stone as gun breaker on a party member during gnashing fang combo while also provoke the boss without clipping gcd with a controller, do that then I will be convinced.
This is true. did you know if you slide your finger across the touch pad of the ps4/5 controllers it's a mouse courser? lightly tap it to click on something. this wont work for pc controller BUT your on pc just grab your mouse to do this. this is how i raised other party members in 24 player raids. it's hard and takes up way too much time but you can do it XD
In addition to the touch pad (at least for consoles), you can also use L1+dpad left/right to cycle through alliance members (L1+up/down cycles through enemies), or you can use the custom target filters, set one up to highlight alliance members, then hit L1+[A, B, X or Y] (or whatever the equivalent is, and whichever button that custom filter is set up on). Or you can put your weapon up and use d-pad left/right. Or if you have a Steam Controller or Steam Deck you can use the touchpads as a mouse.
That isn’t true. You can rez or heal their alliance members on a controller. You can either tab target through the field or hold L1 and cycle through alliance lists. I’m a controller healer main and have no problem doing this. I’ve adjusted my tab settings so the priorities are different for my healers vs dps vs tanks to make it easier.
I am so frustrated starting out because of the controller. I feel like I sucked and when I finally get the correct target, the mobs already been killed and I can’t type fast enough on the keyboard
My favorite is Warrior. What is considered the best? Best defensive cds, most damage out put, or best self sustaining? In my opinion they are all very good Tanks. I've leveled them all to 80 and it just came down to play preference for me. I would suggest just playing what you want to play. The tank that resonates with you best is the best tank. 😁
FFXIV was designed to be optimized for controller, and that makes movement and targeting on K&M to be aweful! Not having something so simple as a click to move avaliable for mouse is a clear design flaw, not having a toggle to move if target is out of range also breaks the flow and relegate your entire mouse hand to a glorified camera stick. Using a mouse is useless when the only thing it does is to control camera. Having something so simple as click-to-move can open so much room for your keyboard hand in some situations that is just insane. making mouse buttons as modifiers would also open so much freedom that only K&M are able to provide. you não need to hold right click to control the camera, space bar col do it just fine and you could use the whole keyboard much more easily than having 3 or 4 modifiers and limiting to keys that are near them. Not complaining and throwing s*it at the game, the controller design is awesome and they really did something great. ut this game was clearly design for joypad and that hurts keyboard design beyond measure! Keyboard don't have choices, only workarounds. The most sucess people find for confot is to buy a MMO mouse and gamer keypad and only use keyboard for chat and some interface shortcuts.
Sounds like you are trying to play an mmo like a top down dungeon crawler. No mmo operates like that. Now you have always been able to click left and right mouse buttons at the same time to run forward and control your direction with the mouse, freeing up your keyboard hand to hot bar. You can bind keys to mouse buttons as well. Your whole post tells me you have no idea what you are talking about.
Copium. come on guys, we have this on MMOs since Lineage. The game is amazing in so many things, lets just accept that this is an oversight, you don't need to whiteknight for square enix. It isn't fresh news that players have trouble playing K&M FFXIV.
@@MrKoutsuko Nobody is "white knighting" here, if you want to use mouse for movement, holding left and right click simultaneously your character will start moving in the direction the camera is facing, and moving the mouse will control the camera. The old-school click to move feels awful to me for any quick direction changes needed. And for MMOs going all the way back to Everquest I've always preferred WASD + mouse for camera control for precisely that reason. Click to move even feels awful to me in games like Diablo, where I would much prefer at least to have an option for WASD movement.
@@8BitCerberus This is exactly how i move around while maintaining my rotation, generally just need to hold a or d while moving with the mouse, the rest of my left hand is free for everything else, people just like to complain
Played MMOs for over 20 years. Started controller 6months ago and never looked back.
But eventually I went mouse/kb because I'd played World of Warcraft so much, my brain had just hardwired gaming that way on a PC.
i just love controller, i can hang with everybody. also my cross bar is almost completely muscle memory by now making it more fun/immersive.
Thank you !! Tired of keyboard player saying they are best because yaddee yadda ... Controller feels more ergonomic to me. It's just for communication that I don't have an USB keyboard to make it easy. But the rest is equal.
That's true. The game does feel like it was made with controller in mind vs. Just making it work on controller.
I tried really hard to use a controller for FFXIV but i went back to M/K for the simple fact , I've been MK for most of my career. It really comes down to what you are natural with.
Just found your channel today, great stuff so far and subbed :)
One note I'd mention with controllers having access to regular hotbars as well, you *can* still use items on them, though it's not nearly as convenient as with kb/m.
Thanks! I'll definitely consider these two points.
Well explained!! I have not played this game yet just purchased it for ps5!! Was worried about using a controller and now been put completely at ease.
That's Great! I hope you enjoy the game!
Great video and informational!
I play 90% controller, 10% k&m. I have cleared all content on controller and it's my preferred way to play. There is no 'best' way to play , and people should just use what is most comfortable for them.
The single biggest pro con both types?:
-M&K you can use strafe to move, letting you have full uptime on 'gaze' mechanics.
I feel like I react better to things on controller, I think it’s a tad bit more annoying with mmo related things like chatting and general UI navigation but controllers nail combat for me.
yeah, me too, i got and small bluetooth mouse and keyboard just to chat, and navigate somethings in the hud, cuz mouse its faster, like in the craft log for example. but combat? controller all the way,
You can set the mouse wheel to cycle through party members aswell as enemies so you can sub target on PC too.
I didn't know about the wheel! That's awesome. I did figure out while making the video you can sub target with the number pad as well xd.
damn.. that is a pro tip
Sorry for this wall of text
In my opinion M+K is superior for one important reason:The existance of mmo mice!
I use a mixture of mouse/keyboard and controller on PlayStation.
Thanks! That FFXIV key pad sounds dope! Maybe I should look into it 🤔
Great video, I'm just writing because...I can and no one has to read this dribble unless they want to learn something (about kbm in 2024 mostly).
I play with "kinda" both
Since I started FF14 my Brother recommended me the "TACTICAL ASSAULT COMMANDER F14 FINAL FANTASY® XIV EDITION" and was blown away how amazing it is
Best Part, you can use it in other games too ;)
what bothers me in the keyboard is that if i press "s" my charcters move superslow back, and when i move the joystick down, my character autoturn and move in that direction, so there is no slow movment. and also, i find very dificult to move using awsd(using 3 to 4 fingers) and circle enemies at the sime time i should be pressing 12345 and etc, put ctrl and shift in the mix then? a nightmare to my cordination, as in the controles, movment its all made by one finger, my thumb, and the rest its free to use all of the comands.
You also have the crossbar that you can double tap for 4 that get set above your default.
when he said "32 slots via crossbar" it was assuming the extra 16 from those
Myself I'm more of a keyboard & mouse type of gamer but will change to using controller if it feels more natural to me.
I dont have a playstation still started using a controller on my PC, and so far i prefer it, easier on the hands after long play sessions
i find that you don't even need to use all the skills as black mage, they are very smart with how they've made this game, you only ever need the first 16 cross bars to be effective even when they add new moves because the new moves are always set up to be improvements on older moves, only time i use the second set of cross bars is if i'm going back to do earlier mission in which you have to use weaker spells such as fire 1 and ice 1, they actually put a lot of thought into button arrangement and accessibility for console as well as p.c.
@@soysaucehairdye7869 Lil pricey for me but i might give it shot if it makes that much of a difference.
I bought a keyboard only to chat faster on ps5 while using a controller lol
Likewise. I'm using an Apple wireless keyboard just for chatting. Gameplay always on controller feels waaaaaay better than mouse and keyboard
Same bro
Get a steam controller
@@suzuya0 I've got one. It's still not as fast as a M+KB in group play. Noticeably slower
So i set up my party list UI like this
Tank
DPS
DPS
Healer
Healer
DPS
DPS
Tank
Like this, quickly slapping a shield or a regen on a tank makes it lots easier.
Only thing i get stress while trying to play this game is soo much damn skills for just one character 😅
My pc can't run the game even at minimum, so I'm on PS4 and have been playing the franchise that way since PS1 days. I find it more intuitive, but would like to get better at targeting, which is a reason I won't play a healer role, so as not to let anyone down! 😅
If you have M&K you can keybind controller controls to your keyboard and use a cross hotbar and hotbar hybrid.
Oh man that's intense.
Thanks for the vid, really enjoyed it..I'm a monk main and I really want to try setting up a controller but kinda scared that it'll make me bad for a while :(
I think you should totally give it a go. 😁 just start every dungeon with. "Hello, first time here" 😂
You do know you can change the keyboard control WASD to act like a joypad controller, and turning on prioritise cone rather than distance makes targeting on m and k much better (why it isn’t default I really don’t know) it’s just two little button presses and you’re done.
It really does come down to what you the player prefer. 😃
Ok i use controller mainly because i suck so much ass at double-tasking that i have a hard time using mouse and keyboard at the same time
Also controller cycling is hella wonky sometimes, especially depending on your settings
With how the game was designed.... Controller. I just find it easier to do things. This is coming from a WoW player for many years.

:::VERDICT:::
Use both depending on what you're doing for ideal results. If you're doing combat, use a controller unless you're a healer. If you're crafting, farming, doing Gold Saucer, or anything else then use a keyboard; a controller is awful for these and takes forever to navigate to things which you could press 1 button to reach on a keyboard
You didn't make any mention of the expanded crossbar for controller
I actually do. I mention the "3rd" cross bar at 6:14 . This setting I mention is under the "Extended crossbar" settings. What I do not mention is that the cross bar can be shown full time. I don't use that so I forgot to add it in. If that is what you meant than nice catch! I did forget to add that in :)
Yea I was talking about the setting were there's the extra hotbar above the normal one that you have to double tap L2 or R2 to use
@@razielshadow2372 I see. Yeah I found for me the double tap was inconsistent so I switched it to L2 then R2.
I use both. But I just a keyboard and mouse to try and learn and if I can't at least i can use text chat easier than using the ps4 text input which is stupid slow lol

Hey guys does the ROG falchion wireless keyboard work on ps5?
I googled it. All i found was "Yes" 😆 GL!
try to use heart of stone as gun breaker on a party member during gnashing fang combo while also provoke the boss without clipping gcd with a controller, do that then I will be convinced.
Thas is easily doable if you don't suck on controller.
Be convinced then... 😅
It works wonders, better even.
I have always played MMOs with keyboard and mouse but wow with controller it’s unbearable 😂
there is one thing controllers can't do in ff14, raise or heal the other 16 Raid members.
I feel like I sucked and when I finally get the correct target, the mobs already been killed and I can’t type fast enough on the keyboard
hello i just bought final fantasy online what do you think is the best Tank in the game i would love to be that ...
there is no "best" just play whatever you want
"movement and targeting on K&M to be aweful! " becuase wasd doesnt exist? and tab doesnt exist? your left hand is in position the entire time
Copium. come on guys, we have this on MMOs since Lineage.
