The Re-floating of the MT Phoenix tanker

  • The tanker, the MT Phoenix got in trouble in the vehement storm that was belting on the Kwazulu-Natal north coast on the 26th of July 2011. It eventually stranded on the beach off Sheffield Beach with its stern coming in first and as the stern got stuck it swung around until the bow almost rested on dry beach the next morning after the storm subsided...This video is about a well engineered Ship Salvaging project.
On the 27th of July 2011, the storm had subsided and the tanker set the scene for what would bring many tourists to the area. There was a strange kind of beauty in the stranding, like a majestic elephant bull that has come to the end of the road
The first refloating attempt took place at about 16h30 on the 31st of July 2011. The ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA was the only tugboat used in the operation with the ZTUG SMIT AYANDA an onlooker. A single cable was used that was attached to the original anchor chain of the tanker. The swell was good but probably not good enough for the day and the ship didn't move during this operation. The operation was eventually disbanded.
After the first refloating attempt took place, salvaging work continued and the oil that was in the tanker were pumped out through the attached tubeline.
The second refloating attempt took place at about 16h30 on the 1st of August 2011. The ZTUG SMIT AYANDA was tied to the front of the ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA and a single cable was used that was attached to the original anchor chain of the tanker. The swell was impressive following the recently passed spring tide. The attempt swung the hull of the MT Phoenix around but the chain proofed to be weak and broke in the process, forcing the team to give up the attempt for the day.
After the second refloating attempt the ship is pushed back to its original position by the successive swells. The swip swivels around its stern which is the part where it is actually more firmly stuck and it originally stranded with its stern first as well..Later the maritime helicopter removes the crew from the ship and the operation for the day is abandoned again...
The third refloating attempt took place after dark at about 18h30 on the 3rd of August 2011. The ZTUG SMIT AYANDA was again tied to the front of the ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA and a single cable was used that was attached to the original anchor chain of the tanker. The tanker didn't want to move nothwithstanding the bigger force of the combined two tugboats. At about 18h50, the chain that was attached to the bow snapped again and in this long 30 second exposure we can clearly see the sparks that eminated as the chain was pulled at high speed through the holes.
The opportunity that lied in the remains of the spring tide was now exhausted and the operation was now postponed for a month till the next new moon and spring tide and in the meantime more salvaging and cleanup took place as well as planning for the next operation..This time two cables would be used connected to the two tugboats seperately.
On Friday the 2nd of September 2011 the final refloating exercise on the
MT Phoenix off Sheffield Beach on the Kwazulu-Natal North Coast of South Africa was to commence. The refloating required a swell of at least 2m and as New Moon went past a few days earlier, the spring tide was still dominant. It was anticipated then that inclement weather from the south would hopefully contribute to the effect and the peak of the tide was going to be at 18h27. Earlier the afternoon the two tugboats ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA and ZTUG SMIT AYANDA were already present and connected with seperate cables to the bow section of the ship. The ship was more firmly fixed on its stern side and the idea was to swivel it around by pulling the bow away from the beach to face seawards.

I grew up on the St.Lawrence river. Years ago, when I was about 12 yrs old I witnessed first hand a large frieghter running aground onto a granite island. I'll never forget the sound it made when it hit that solid granite, common in the Great Lakes, and how incredible it was to see this enormous fireghter run aground in front of our town.
Great little video. I'm a sailor (smaller sailboats) and love the sea. The footage was great and tons of info behind it. Very nice.

Christiaan, ignore the music haters. It is obvious you put a lot of time and passion into making this video. Your perseverance in documenting all the refloating attempts led to some spectacular photos and footage. I was sad to find out that after all that effort the ship was scuttled. Also amazing to me is the patience with which you respond to the critical comments. You could tell them all off but you always answer with humility and humor. You have a new subscriber!

Christiaan Kleynhans I am also Scottish. Your accent is spectacular. I'm the product of a McKinstry, a Stirling, a Mitchell and a Guy, and I can't even half fake a Scottish accent that well.

Docktor Jim Hehehehe Docktor Jim, I am South African and far from being Scottish. To be honest, I am originally from German descent and I grew up with a language called Afrikaans that gave me this accent. It is not suppose to be fake, it is real and we do pronounce certain sounds very similar to what the Scottish do.

I don't like the music with this clip. To me it was too loud and did not allow me to enjoy footage I otherwise would have. If it was a lot lower in db, more in the background, it may have been ok, however, I would have just preferred to hear the ocean. Beyond that, it is a well produced little clip, thanks for posting it..

I have dealt with this subject quite a few times Justin. Thanks for your comments though. I had very little choice in my music as I could only use music that I had the right to use for. Not as easy as it look if you just want to publish on low budget for fun. I should have left the music out. In hindsight. But now the video is popular and I can't tamper with it. So I beg that everybody try to tolerate it as far as possible. I really put in a huge effort to tell a story and to gather and edit the material. I am just a hobbyist.

Thank you very much Mary. The salvaging would have cost too much. That is my first assessment. The ship also had a big hole in its hull and was only kept afloat with the aid of compressors. Salvaging it on the spot would have been very difficult as well as it is quite inaccessible by vehicles and the area is upper middle class housing and the residents would bot have allowed that. There may be other reasons but I am not too sure about them. Have a lovely day. Chris

Its a pleasure John. Yes, in that way it was like a story or movie with all its failures and the success at the end.

I made it through 2 minutes. Appreciate the efforts and realize it is your first video but edit out the music. It lends nothing to the documentary and is just plain annoying.

Maybe you can advise me how to edit out the music without affecting the success of theis video? If I could I would have.

shame that no one bothered to preview this video before uploading it perhaps they would have found that is nearly impossible to hear the person speaking due to unneeded Music being too loud

@@ChristiaanKleynhans if you have original footage you can just remake video with no music chap

    • @ChristiaanKleynhans

Really chap. You have obviously never had a succesful video on UA-cam. I have original footage of course. No guarantee that it will again perform that well. Do you want me to throw away 12.5 million views chap? And since it works I will accept that ot works well enough.

I wouldn't change my town for anything. Nicely developed but also tranquil and embedded in nature. And boring is not a word that ever crosses my mind as I have too much going on in my head.

Well your first lesson is cut the Music down a bit so we can hear The Narrator . I will have to charge you for any more successful advice if I can help just let me know 😂😂

My apologies, I didn't realize that you are a genius and an expert. I went to have a look at your videos and i am very impressed. I love your minimalistic approach to both sound and video, it conveys the message very well. I do aplogize, this was my first video and it was made under enormous pressure in 2011 and I had nio experience. Nothwithstanding all of that, it became very succesful as you may notice from the views. I obviously didn't just sit there, I continued to make more videos and i tried to improve and sad to say, I don't think I will ever reach your high standards. Some people did enjoy aspects of this video. At that time, most people were just posting videos on UA-cam of their cats and dogs and they didn't use any editing either. But so do we learn, don't you agree?

Not enough music, needs to be louder.

Thank you MissDistarr for your defence. I appreciate it and you are hitting the nail on its head. A video like this has no allocated budget or staff support. It is a one man amateur attempt at relaying a story as best as one could. It is kind of annoying to see people swear in the manner that they do as acknowledgment. You are a very nice person and I hope you have lovely day. Warm regards from KZN South Africa as well.

You are so very welcome. Just keep making video's that YOU are proud of. That is what's most important. Just know that you told the story you wanted and you did it well. I simply cannot understand people sometimes. It takes such little effort to be kind to others yet they go out of their way to insult someone. Don't pay them any further attention. Take care and you have a great rest of your day!
