    • @ScubaViz
      @ScubaViz  Рік тому +18

      Large cutouts are put in the haul just a foot or so above the waterline. Then the contractor pumps water into the haul to start the sinking process. As water is added the cutouts get closer and closer to the waterline. Once enough water has been pumped into the haul it will start filling on its own and sink.

      I think you're referring to the reef pyramids. Volusia County purchased four reef pyramids and mounted them to the hall of the ship's interior. Their hope was that it would increase the diversity of services that biologicals could attach to and also provide some additional weight to keep the shipwreck upright. Sometime shipwrecks will lean over because they're no longer balanced correctly when they're empty.

      Look at the hold, especially around the hatch: It's rusted out enough that I wouldn't trust it with my weight, let alone the seas or a load of cargo. Common question actually, especially from those that are outside the USA. This ship was confiscated during a drug smuggling arrest. It was auctioned off to the highest bidder. In this case, it was sold to the County of Volusia in Florida to create an artificial reef. Think of it as an underwater park. This ship and the reef structures that were placed in the cargo area have created a fish habitat that is frequented by fishermen and scuba divers. This is a common practice in the United States.

    Why do these people sink ships instead of recycling all the materials?

    • @ScubaViz
      @ScubaViz  3 роки тому +3

      This type of artificial reef is very effective at creating marine habitat. It's also one of the more popular and cost-effective types of reef construction targeted for fishermen and divers. This ship is 120' long so maybe 150 toms of steel. Steel at the moment is something like $200 a ton. So the scrap steel value is maybe $30,000. So someone in the need of raw materials would be better off buying it from another source.

    • @jamesbrett9537
      @jamesbrett9537 2 роки тому +1

      The recycling of ships is often done In places with little to no environmental restrictions and as such is very damaging to the environment. Often the ships are just cut up on a beach with all the oils just drained into the ocean. Sinking of ships is normally done in a very professional way that minimizes environmental impact and so is often the better way to go. It also creates a nice artificial reef for sea life to live in.
