Daily updates are brilliant, keep them coming. I used to be a parts delivery driver for a company in Warminster Wiltshire delivering Fiat Lancia parts. Loved all the Fiats, especially the early Fiat 500. How times have changed, as it was about 45 years ago, I have now retired.
Now you’re talking James, had the Bravo HGT back in the late 90’s, a 5 pot 20 valve that had a soundtrack to die for, the 20v turbo must be a beast of a motor in a car that small , looking forward to see you’re updates on this one , worth saving in my opinion, keep it standard with the factory colour, upgrade the brakes and suspension should be a looker and a real hoot to drive , you’ll get loads of smiles per gallon with this one 👏👏👏👏
James, you have not lost the plot. This Fiat is worth saving and should be a keeper. I think it was designed by Chris Bangle, he went on to work for BMW but his talent had peaked with the Fiat Coupe. I hope when you take a close look the car it sound and worth saving. Robert
Yessss! Very excited to see this one progress. I loved them when they were new!! Can totally echo the comments on resto unless you do it yourself, you need deep pockets! I've learned that from experience!
The Pininfarina badges on the sides, let water in which causes the rot behind that panel. The boot floor rots out on the seams at the sides and rear panel. The bumper mounts front and rear nicknamed 'eifel towers' rot out. Radiator surround rots out, bonnet clam shell rots on the inner seams, chassis rails underneath rot, floor pans rot, front chassis rots where the front brake pipe flexi joins the hard pipe, sills rot either end. Sunroofs cause even more rot.
Absolutely loved these when they came out! 😍 As others have said they’ve aged really well and that 5 cylinder lump sounds epic. Really hope it’s as solid as it seems and very glad your thinking of saving it and putting the work in as u hardly ever see them these days. Think this will make some great content for the channel and I’m looking forward to seeing the progress and end result.
Had an Ink Black 20VT back in 2008, definitely recommend FCSS (Joe). Over four years of ownership only major expenses were a cambelt replacement and new radiator. Lovely sound and once chipped by Flea was a great drive 👍
sun roof is less desirable, brembos were standard for all 20vts, early model 20vts came with the cloth/fabric seats, i picked up a plus in 2021, for free, 350whp, 2nd spare low mileage engine is going to be built for 1000bhp (keeping it fwd still) but getting the cambelt and turbo replaced on current engine.
Car vertical ads will help James earn a couple of more pennies for his great channel!! So come on guys let's just put up with it and help him along on his journey 👌 You Never Know hopefully, he may give up with Car Vertical and be sponsored by Anne Summers next year 😊😊
Al Qaeda the IRA anything will be better than car vertical I reckon I could do a car vertical search blindfolded now not that I ever will because I hate them
I test drove one about 20 years ago, utterly ludicrous torque steer,i was only in it about 45 mins and im sure i destroyed the front tyres.handed it back with a massive stupid grin on my coupon tho🤣
Who doesn't enjoy a 'doer upper!'...as you say James, makes absolutely no financial sense whatsoever but motors like this need saving!! Look forward to you bringing it back to life! 👍👍
Great little project James , we all need toys . I bought a triumph spitfire 1500 in June that’s been off the road since 1988 . It will keep me busy through winter 😂
Almost ran this is a legend you must keep this, would check to see if it’s getting fuel, check spark, compression test pop some fuel in and a new battery see how you go
Absolute legend of a car James! We have got 3 20v Turbo's, 2 in poor state that need a LOT of work and 1 immaculate one we use for shows and weekends and when not working, in other words whenever I get the chance.. Our tidy black red one has 42,000 miles from new and I am the second owner. One of the rough 2 has 68,000 miles and we are the 3rd owners and the other of the rough 2 that we use for spare parts has 275,000 miles on it believe it or not and we are its 7th and final owner! We also have 2 beautiful Fiat Punto Turbo's in extremely nice condition which I happen to love very much. We also have a 1988 E reg 1600 Lancia Delta HF Turbo which I have had since I was 22 years old, I am now 47!!! It is only down to sheer hard graft I have these cars and it's because of hard graft I'm able to keep them running. I hope you have good luck with your Turbo James, if you need any parts and if we are able to help just let me know...👍🙂👍
You sir are a legend Iam unsure whether to bow in your presence or laugh and shake my head, but you have a serious passion for all things fiat and turbo.
when these came out, I had a Fiat Uno Turbo i.e (the proper mk1,.. not the soft facelifted rubbish one).... and was begging to get one of these 20v turbo coupes,... until my pal who had one fitted a new back box - £500+!!! so was then happy with my little Uno!!!
Hi James, Well worth Saving, when i have encountered as clutch plate stuck to the fly wheel in the past, something that was passed on to me by a old school mechanic that has worked is to (if can can get the car running) wedge the clutch pedal to the floor and let the car fully warm up and keep running for a good while, release the clutch pedal, this may unstick the plate from the fly wheel
FCSS or Midlands car servicing best bet for these - sorted me out with parts and work on mine. Rust biggest issue but often from inside out. Take off the rear door cards and check behind - the pinnafarina badges let in moisture that can get inner cills. Then boot floor, lift the carpet and look down the seam join to the rear quarter panel.
Loved this one, many (20?) years ago, I put down a deposit on one of these brand new. 2 days later my wife revealed her pregnancy, and my dream car was no longer an option... The test drive is still the only time I took one out.
Great cars, I've had 3...2 20v Turbo's and a VIS 170..both great but the 20v is an absolute hoot. I'd pay particular attention to the brake lines at the compensator , the lines corrode at the unions on the top as water pools there....same as the early alfa 916 cars, same platform ( tipo )
If anyone mentions Xr3i , Xr2, mini or Escort then my ears prick up , my mind doesn’t care about money and I’m taken straight back to the 90’s and happy days. I once bought an XR2 engine (put in the boot of a Sierra) to put in a mk3 series 1 XR3 and with some help had it running the same day. Amazing fun.. Keep living the dream James! I’m off to search for an XR3…
As an owner of a 1997 FC 20VT your clutch problem is probably the clutch master cylinder which is a consumable item but a nightmare to change as its right by the steering column / pedals and under there is tight!!...Still , if its rust free you must do all you can to get it in Top shape : re-spray, engine, suspension/shocks, interior tidy up, led lights, etc....You will then have a truly great machine even in modern times....PS: finally an engine tune, perhaps big turbo, intercooler etc....You will then have a shatteringly quick car. Goodluck!
I had a blue one of these back in the day! Awesome car! Unfortunately I was young and stupid and it ended up in a ditch and was very very broken afterwards!
Hi James, I think this car is worth saving. It may not make financial sense but it will be rewarding. And it could bring some fun on a track day before you sell it on.
Great buy! Loved these when new, especially the five cylinder jobs. Yellow or blue would be my choice of colour, but hell, this would still do nicely! Daily updates are great btw.
Well done for saving it James, I wouldn't need to think twice 👍 Probably my least favourite colour but hey it's a good job we're all different. Loving the content keep it coming 🍻
That little jump pack mate is only designed the jig a slightly flat decent battery into life on a car that's been running OK recently, I've got a battery from a fork lift on a trolley for big jobs with big cables.
Hi James, been watching your channel for a while and whilst I'm not always a fan of your choice of cars! , I keep watching because you show what it's really like to run a second hand car business. Now you've really got me hooked to see what you do with the fiat! I too own a sprint blue 20v turbo which I love (also a TV star!) glad you're a fan because we need to save these, they're great drivers cars, in fact I use mine as my daily but the fun is when you put your foot down because it goes like stink 😁👍
@@fwof3347 blimey, that's obvious but all I was saying (tongue in cheek) was they're not always my sort of car, i certainly wasn't criticising so calm down and have a cup of tea or something
Not many checks you can do with a clutch apart from checking the fluid level and seeing if it works when engine running. The clutch slave cylinder is outside of the bell housing on this one according to another comment, so that's easily checkable.
I think the daily updates are a bit like a diary, and small things and events can happen so fast. I own 2 20vt's, one of them a Plus. They are great cars, i've had mine for years and done nothing but the obvious maintenance. Once sorted and if they have little to no rust I can't see why you could not use them regularly, I fact I think all cars would prefer that. I look forward to what we find along the way with this, and whatever other cars you stumble upon along the way. I look forward to more episodes from your daily diary....
Looking forward to seeing the progress on this, always loved these cars and would love to own one. As for the clutch, I remember having a similar issue with a MK3 escort in the 90's that had stood for sometime, I put it in first gear and turned ignition without foot on clutch, after a couple of jerks came a bang and the clutch had released itself and all was good... I will not be held responsible if the timing jumps a tooth though! 😂👍
I enjoy the regular updates gives a sense of whats going on with your business which I find interesting as I'm a car nut aswell! The Fiat could be a brilliant modern classic but obviously will be a big investment in terms of time and money. Hope its not rusted through and that a restoration project happens would make great content and variety for your channel👍
I had one of these about 15 years ago, same colour but with a toffee/butterscotch leather interior. It was fast as a b*st*ard, and just a super nice driving environment. I could drive for hours and step out as fresh as a daisy. I traded it in for a Mercedes SLK, which seemed like a good idea at the time. Derestricted from the 155mph limit and mildly tuned these are 170mph cars easy, if it had launched 5 years earlier it would have been classed as a supercar.

2014 that back tyre, if I saw it right... A guy I used to play cricket with had an electric blue 20v Turbo... Great motors!

yes, i like the daily updates. if it gets too much, every 2-3 days would also be good.
Rossi red for me. Taking the engine out for a cam belt is a risky encounter, Fiats of this ilk have temperamental wiring without disturbing them.

I bought an Alfa GTV on its very first mot it needed 2 cills. and brake pipes, just got to love Italian cars.
Bought a lancia hpe, 5 years old, took it for an mot, tester said it had been in earlier that week and subframe had rusted away from the body (!)
By chance the next video down is Elvis from wheeler dealers how to improve your bhp on a 20v Turbo Fiat .
Have a look at the gear linkage cable and clutch they could be finished
The registration on that Fiat tells me it's been a London car all it's life, which is why it's largely rust free
knew someone who had one of these he told me the engine has to be removed to replace the cam belt due to lack of room to change it in the car!
It can be done in the engine bay but it needs to be totally detached and levered to the side, even then its tight
I’ve had 3 20VTs and they’re cracking cars. Surprisingly very little torque steer to be honest. Definitely collectors cars now. One important thing to check are Turbo seals. Leave it running for at least 20 minutes and then rev it hard. You’ll soon see if the seals are gone.

Rightly so

Hi James that doesn’t look to bad for a project but it’s the Citroens I worry about 😀 but keep up the good work
I love the sound of 5 cylinder cars! 😆
Love Fiat Coupes. Never owned one - yet!
Keep an eye on the orange key code warning light, if that doesn’t go out the immobiliser hasn’t recognised the key
Evening James love abit of retro brave man on the italian route though 😀, did you mention a topdon booster pack discount ...lol.
Oh yes lol!!
"Autoalex" rebuilding his, rattle can respray. He might need parts car if you cant progress this one :)
The “old school boost gauge “ is an oil pressure gauge .
