I started having problems with my sciatic nerve a few months ago and I have tried some of your suggestions in dealing with it. One of which was to move from sleeping in a bed to sleeping on the floor. This helped quite a bit. I was able to fall asleep without any pain/tingling in my fingers and toes, however I am a stomach sleeper and when I would wake up I would have pain in my lower back. Last night I tried using a pillow under my pelvis and for the 1st time in months I woke up without any pain whatsoever.Therapists have suggested that I try sleeping in other positions but I am unable to. So as a 44 year stomach sleeper I just wanted to give you a very big thank you.
Thanks once I turn around to sleep on my stomach im a stomach sleeper I start get low pain on my right then get my legs numb and when I wake up every 2 hours my fingers are numb I am going to put a pillow under my stomach I hope I could sleep I’m scared
OMG THANK YOU! I naturally sleep on my stomach and wake up constantly because my lower back is hurting. Had to come back to this video to leave a comment.
i never wake up on my stomach, however i cannot fall asleep unless i'm on my stomach. but one arm is under the pillow and the opposite leg is up and thrown over a body pillow.
That's how I roll as well with one difference. I sleep with my head perfectly straight down. I use a mullet pillow and with my left arm I run it under the pillow to my right side and my right arm goes under as well towards the left. I push enough pillow stuffing to create a bubble of mullet that I place my forehead and eyes on leaving my nose and mouth hanging over an open space beyond the bottom edge of the pillow. My breathing is perfect, my head is straight and like you my right leg kind of bends and has a long bed pillow under it which prevents back issues. This is a golden technique for me.
I used to be a "stomach sleeper". But, after having inflammation of the nerves on my face, lock jaw, locked neck, lower back pain, and myofascial shoulder pain, I switched to sleeping on my left side with my knees bent. I put my pillow under my head in a way that keeps head, neck, and back perfectly straight! Over several months of sleeping this way, I have corrected much of the above symptoms that put me in the hospital!! I should put a pillow between my knees too. But, side sleeping has eased so much suffering!!!!!
Hello, I'm going through the same thing. I'm 33 and now I feel pain in my lower back and jaw. Never happened in my twenties. I guess it's because I sleep on my stomach. How are you now?
i’ve tried so hard to kick stomach sleeping but i already have a lot of sleeping issues and just can’t fall asleep any other way (still takes me an hour or 2 to fall asleep 😔)
Always been a stomach sleeper. Recently deleted my pillow and found a huge difference in my quality of sleep. Not sure about putting a pillow by my abdomen as I haven't had lower back pain. Only occasionally do I have shoulder pain.
Odd, as a stomach sleeper, reading some of the comments from other front sleepers. I always thought we slept that way because it was comfortable! If I lie on my back I get lower back/leg pain and I'm just not comfortable on my side. I think it's crucial to have a VERY slim pillow. Not easy to get. Oh, and I raise my arm over my head as well - it's very happy there :-)
I am a stomach sleeper and I have really realized that sleeping with the pillow under my belly is much more comfy than it at my head. Thanks for the confirmation ☺️
Get sleep paralysis when sleeping on my back sleeping on my side I always flop over to my back or my stomach even with pillows to keep me in place. Stomach it is then
Hello Doctor, I can't sleep on sides or on my back. I have to sleep on stomach. Is it causing a problem for breathing and lower back pain? If yes, what's the right way to shift to sleeping on sides?
I've tried all of this that is being talked about and im still not sleeping well at all. I got a firm mattress and a couple of different types of flater pillows but I'm still not sleeping well. I've also tried different positions but because we got the firmer mattress now it's even harder for me to sleep in another position then my stomach. From what I can tell also I'm in alot of pain in my lower back and in my neck. It's crazy to me because these problems are new and I've been a stomach sleeper all my life. And now that I can't seem to sleep well in the only position that I know how to sleep and I'm not sleeping well I'm not sure what to do. When you don't sleep well and you feel like you need more sleep all the time to get the same sleep that you once did it's pretty frustrating. Any idea or thoughts to try to help?
My mom solely put me to sleep on my stomach as a baby in the 80s, and she insisted that I put my son to sleep on his stomach when I became a young mother. Now my son and I can only sleep on our stomachs as adults! With my following two daughters, I put them to sleep in every position and they don't have this problem like us. Ahhhhhh
What about using a vitrectomy or massage face cradle type pillow. I've seen a lot of designs. I've seen one type that attaches between the the mattress and box spring. It seems like sleeping this way might also help snoring because the base of the tongue, and soft palate would sink forward when relaxed instead of back. I seem to snore less on my side than on my back.
I am a stomach sleeper... my back is fine, but my shoulders are all screwed up. I cant find a good spot for my arms. They always end up outstretched in front of me, holding the headboard, or in a weird position under the pillow that puts strain on them.
james beaet i too sleep on my stomach but i dont use a pillow for my head. I usually put on of my arms around a pillow next to me with my other arm going down my side
I am a stomach sleeper and I suffer from neck and shoulder and upper back pain. I have fibromyalgia. I have tried to sleep on my back and just end up rolling over in the night and my neck is so soar and head aches. I will try what you have mentioned in this video. thx.
Thank you very much for the hot tip Doc! At first I thought you were nuts! How could a pillow under my stomach help with pelvic tilt? But then I gave it a go and found it surprisingly comfy : ) Legend!
56 yrs sleeping on stomach...had to change to side cause of neck and shoulder pain, took a long time...miss sleeping on stomach, but can't even if I wanted cause of hip pain (tight everything around hip)....wish I had learnt to sleep on back, years ago.
I am a life-long stomach sleeper, but I have always put my arms under me with no ill effects. Is this the same as putting a pillow under my abdomen to counter the swayback ? I do not suffer backaches as a result. People ask why my arms do not go numb. I do not know, they just don't. Thank goodness for that!
I'm currently 24, and have been a stomach sleeper for as long as I can remember. Never really got any pain, but always felt that it was not optimal for spine nor neck, so when making a multitude of changes in my life recently, among them was to make myself sleep on my back. Took several nights with less than optimal sleep, but actually managed to adjust to it surprisingly fast, and now it feels great. Stopped using a pillow as well.
I was a back sleeper and a side sleeper I'm 25 and just got scoliosis and degenerative disc disease I can't sleep it hurts so much in the morning I can only sleep on my stomach at the moment is it making my problem worse ?
I’m always on my front, I always have one hand under the pillow and one under my stomach. Always used the end of the pillow as well. Definitely trying the pillow in about 2 hours 🤣🤣
Definitely use no pillow under the head. Helps a lot. But the best thing you can do is to move that pillow under your hips to the entire length of your torso, shoulder to hip, and place your arm your head is facing away from down by your side towards your leg. Seriously I don't know how people sleep on their stomach with both arms around their head.
What can I do if my back sways the other way? I have lower back pain almost 24/7 especially sitting or walking too long, I noticed the curve in my back when I’d bend down or my sitting because I can’t help but hunch when I sit, I’m a stomach sleeper and i slouch when I sit
Although I’m doing my best to sit straight even though it’s really uncomfortable especially when trying to sleep, I’m trying not to sleep on my stomach so I’ve been trying to sleep on my back with a pillow underneath me
I am 40 years old and I am stomach sleeper I am always getting up tired from the bed every morning I will try to sleep like that.. And I will tell you what happened
In one of your previous video you said we also need a pillow for chest...So is it okay to put another one below chest since it is not included in this video ?
I've always been a side sleeper. But I now can't sleep due to a pinched nerve in my lower vertebra. I discovered last night that if I place a pillow under my pelvis while on my stomach, it decompresses the vertabrate and allows me to sleep. I'm left however with and the issue of having to turn my neck. It seems like a pillow with an opening in the middle would allow me to breath without turning my neck. Your thoughts?
i think the reason some humans (including me) can only sleep on their stomach is the same reason most animals sleep on their stomach… your weak spot with the most organs is the stomach, so if you sleep on your back you are completely vulnerable. does anyone else think this is a survival instinct?
thank ypi very much for the video. well in general i agree but some people have delordosa and for them the pillow will not work... the oposite i think the position without the pillow will make them feel good.
Chris MacQueen You can get a pillow that is curved (looks kind of like a neck pillow but is longer and is like an actual pillow.) This may help you be able to breath properly while also helping your neck pillow.
any thoughts on a good pillow for cpap user who is stomach sleeper. Besides pillow under lower back, any ideal pillow for head area for stomach sleepers with cpap?????
Hi Doc, I'm a stomach sleeper, always have been. I'm going to try your pillow under the stomach tonight to see if that helps at all, but I think I'm doomed to be a stomach sleeper.. Thanks!
Thanks for the tip!! I am a stomach sleeper with a bad back due to a herniated disc in the L4/L5 - L5/S1. I'm 5'8 160 in weight and I am looking for a mattress that is firm or medium firm Due to my bad back.. What are your thoughts and concerns for the top 3 memory foam mattress?
I never would give up my stomach position but I was able to once by using a tennis ball I strapped it onto my stomach at night and kept me from turning on my stomach at night from discomfort. After a while I slept steadily on my back.. med school started and I need to sleep when I laid down so I thew that ball to the dog! But if u can keep up with it it works. Only thing that worked for me!
Thank you always Doctor I have slip disc at my lower back and neck problem too I already had 3 injections for lower back and i am waiting for another one. I am hoping with the injections i will become better so I don't do the opp. What do you think about the injections Doctor? Pls help a big tnk you from Malta Doris

I am heavy framed and muscular workout and swim regularly, I have not had any issues sleeping on my stomach.
Thank you Dr.Mandell.More power to you.
Lifelong stomach sleeper who now sleeps on my right side. As a stomach sleeper I always use a very slim or thin pillow!
I am a stomach sleeper and I have really realized that sleeping with the pillow under my belly is much more comfy than it at my head. Thanks for the confirmation ☺️
MegaMusikAddict of course because you pretty simulating kind of a back position sleep but upside down
Same
.
I hate sleeping my head on pillows I don’t use pillows for my head. plus I like a hard carpet floor better then a bed don’t know why but I do.
My back has been killing me and I'm a stomach sleeper this helped thank u

Best for stomach sleepers is simpler: 1. No pillow. 2. Sleeping on a very hard mattress, on the floor, or on a mattress topper.
I am a stomach sleeper... my back is fine, but my shoulders are all screwed up. I cant find a good spot for my arms. They always end up outstretched in front of me, holding the headboard, or in a weird position under the pillow that puts strain on them.

I do the same. No back issues😊
I was wondering if you have any good recommendations for a specific pelvic/abdominal pillow?
Been sleeping on my stomach my whole life and have had no problems. But also 28 years old. If it's not broke, don't fix it?
I'm currently 24, and have been a stomach sleeper for as long as I can remember. Hey, do you still sleep on your back?
Is there a pillow that anyone recommends to lift the pelvis off the mattress??
What if I have a built in "pillow" on my stomach?
lol
😜
omg u ate that
I was a back sleeper and a side sleeper I'm 25 and just got scoliosis and degenerative disc disease I can't sleep it hurts so much in the morning I can only sleep on my stomach at the moment is it making my problem worse ?
I heard if you were left on you stomach to sleep as a baby a lot, you'll do the same older because it feels valuable to lay on your back.
I’m always on my front, I always have one hand under the pillow and one under my stomach. Always used the end of the pillow as well. Definitely trying the pillow in about 2 hours 🤣🤣

Thanks doctor i am going to send this video to my daughter she is one of those and her back huts
Blessings dear
I have 46 years of experience sleeping on my stomach, I'm sure I got it figured out.
I'm looking for a pillow that is cold.
I've liked sleeping on my back for years, but I'll no doubt snore which leads to a lot of awake time while sleeping
Hi, would this help my anterior pelvic tilt? I have a lot of pain in my lower back from this
I put the pillow under my chest so my neck doesn't have to turn so much and my arms don't go numb
thank you, you rock!
I can't sleep on my sides. It makes my arms gp dead no matter what I do. I require pressure on me to sleep well, so I sleep on my stomach.
It worked!! Thanks
Abdominal pillow support is helpful
Will this still help if you fall asleep on your side every night but wake up on your stomach every morning?

I am 40 years old and I am stomach sleeper I am always getting up tired from the bed every morning I will try to sleep like that.. And I will tell you what happened
I sleep on a floor and my hips hurt on the ground so I've been putting a pillow under my hips for forever now.
Dude that would be so uncomfortable your neck would have to be at a 45 or 50 degree angle
Meant 90 to 95 degree angle
I keep a area in the corner of my bed that I put my pillow in a way that I have a nice airway there and can sleep with my head straight down
In one of your previous video you said we also need a pillow for chest...So is it okay to put another one below chest since it is not included in this video ?
Thanks, I'm gomna try this!
Does this corrects Anterior pelvic tilt?
I've always been a side sleeper. But I now can't sleep due to a pinched nerve in my lower vertebra. I discovered last night that if I place a pillow under my pelvis while on my stomach, it decompresses the vertabrate and allows me to sleep. I'm left however with and the issue of having to turn my neck. It seems like a pillow with an opening in the middle would allow me to breath without turning my neck. Your thoughts?
Try to explore of finding a position either on left side, right side, or on your back with a pillow underneath the knees or between the knees.
Would sleeping with your arms by your sides be okay?
I do it and have also read it’s better for your shoulders
Simply sleep on a harder surface, why don't you recommend that?
I thought about this and did it before I saw this.
I’m trying to stop sleeping on my stomach. I have severe neck shoulder and back pain. 😢
i think the reason some humans (including me) can only sleep on their stomach is the same reason most animals sleep on their stomach… your weak spot with the most organs is the stomach, so if you sleep on your back you are completely vulnerable.
does anyone else think this is a survival instinct?
Literally the same position I’m in right now, pillows, hands and all
thank ypi very much for the video. well in general i agree but some people have delordosa and for them the pillow will not work... the oposite i think the position without the pillow will make them feel good.
I sleep with my face directly in the pillow, it restricts my breathing a bit but it helps my neck
Chris MacQueen You can get a pillow that is curved (looks kind of like a neck pillow but is longer and is like an actual pillow.) This may help you be able to breath properly while also helping your neck pillow.
I don't use pillows
any thoughts on a good pillow for cpap user who is stomach sleeper. Besides pillow under lower back, any ideal pillow for head area for stomach sleepers with cpap?????
Hi Doc,
I'm a stomach sleeper, always have been. But a few years ago, I had neck cancer, and radiation and chemo burned out my saliva glands, so now I wake up at least 10-15 times a night to have to get a sip of water. I've tried sleeping on my back, but my mouth dries out within a couple of minutes to the point of parched and I literally can't stay asleep longer than 5 minutes tops.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm going to try your pillow under the stomach tonight to see if that helps at all, but I think I'm doomed to be a stomach sleeper.. Thanks!
Hi, raw honey is excellent. Might want to consider sucking on slippery elm tablets. Valerian root before you go to bed may really help you sleep well.
I'll look into those, thanks! : )
Hey I hope you're better now
I have been a stomach sleeper since I can remember.... if I sleep on my back, I wake up with a stiff lower back
Thanks for the tip!!
Does sleeping on my breasts have any negative effects?
Just nice ...
I am hoping with the injections i will become better so I don't do the opp. What do you think about the injections Doctor? Pls help a big tnk you from Malta Doris
Hi Dolores, not a big fan of them. I have my own experiences to back that up.
Now I can breathe freely
I mastered that years ago. but I also noticed if I fold one edge of my pillow over a little and place my head on the edge to where my head is nearly straight down, even more so than when he demonstrated, with my arms folded up and my hands on each side of my head, this might be just me, but I also face the palms of my hands up. Just saying
thanks alot
I'm listening
Wahhhhh😥 That’s the only way I can sleep. Seems so strange that you would find the one way that works for you does so much damage. I need to love myself more and stop punishing my body. 🤓To the side I try....like I have after all these years.
does a big tummy count as a pillow for the abdomen? xD
I don't know bout this doc.
Does my beer belly work? 😏
I can't sleep in my back because it makes me have much more frequent episodes of sleep paralisys, i try slways to sleep in my side but in the midle of the night i change position and wake up always in my stomac... 😂😂😂
oky Dr what about the organs (Hart liver g b large &small intestine .......!!!??
stomach sleeper it may cause damage
the best way it'S right hand sleep that is more healthy.
thanks .
Better myself lol get ove4 yourself
I though that too - like we're somehow deficient! :-0
I can't help but sleep in my arms and hands. They hurt when I wake-up
