I really wish Pokémon Contests were series mainstays I would've loved to see them keep improving them but sadly after Gen 4 they were forgotten about until the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire where they were pretty much exactly how they were before but with the addition of mega evolution not the biggest change but they were still fun but boy the Diamond & Pearl remakes oversimplified them to the point where they were no longer fun.
I still haven’t played them in BDSP, but I’ll definitely have to check it out and that’ll probably be a video. But hope Scarlet and Violet adds some kind of side mode like it. But hope, not sure how likely, haha.
Me, who actually loved the musical dress-up sections as a child and remembers them really fondly: But seriously, I'm glad you made a video on this! I do agree that Musicals are kinda disappointing gameplay-wise, but I LOVED the improvements to the dress-up system so much and how they interacted with the animated sprites. I always dressed up my childhood Frillish (one of my favourite mons tbh) named Frilla. Specifically with the Lace Cap, the Necklace (which I'd always find a way to layer the Round Button over it, so it looked like Frilla had found it along with some pearls underwater and made a necklace from it), and the Pikachu Bib (which I always interpreted as a sundress for her), along with whatever prop fit best for the show, usually the Cutlass or Lonely Flower. I still have her, now in Shield, but it's a shame you can't really customise pokémon anymore... not that you ever really properly could I suppose, but things like Contests and musicals really sparked my imagination, gave my beloved pokémon more to their lives outside of battling. They didn't have to evolve or have maximum IVs to mean anything, everyone was on equal footing & could have fun. It's just sad there isn't really anything like that anymore. Sorry this is all just long kinda unrelated rambiling but I wanted to put it out there I guess xD (I'm probably just being over dramatic but hey, it meant a lot to me lol. Plus since I'm an artist now, I can draw them all with as unique character designs as I want! xD)
Yeah, I think it would be neat for the extra little modes to come back more so in some form and have more to do. Gen 5 definitely perfected the dress up stuff, but with 3D models, it’s harder to implement. I think at the very least, Pokemon could have hats, lol.

Not gonna lie, when I played Black and White as a kid and battled against my friends, I didn’t even know you could turn that off. So every single battle I did had the Wonder Launcher in it lol
Yeah that was great ^^ An interesting twist on the Pokemon world. I don't know which one is my favorite though. I like the outfit in The Giant Woman. Like, seeing the character in a casual outfit is cool. Also this story ends on a beautiful note (I just wish that they wouldn't have turned the female protagonist into Monika's sister unlike the boy who's her boyfriend. Let them be lesbians, dammit !) In the aliens movie, I think E is a super cool character. And in Full MetalCop, it's cool that you play as the villain, and even though you're expected to lose, you can go for the weird ending and make the bad guy win. Which is cool for Pokemon where everything is usually super nice and the good guys always win (on the surface).
Funnily enough, it seems like Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl tried to turn Super Contests into more interactive Pokémon Musicals, which really didn’t seem to go over so well with Pokémon Contest fans.
I participated once with each member of my team, I dressed them all with sunglasses, ties and some random hat based on what looked more ridiculous for each one.
I spent so much time with Pokémon musicals beacose dreasing them and looking at the Pokémon dancing is funy especialy with Pokémons that are intimidating in the cute category
My theory is that since Unova’s setting is based on New York City area, they wanted to adopt Pokemon Contest (which was kinda based on Japanese idol contest, to my knowledge) into something that can represent the States better. As a person live around NYC, I know that musical theater originated mainly in the States, and has heavy influence on the area especially in early to middle 90s (before movies became mainstream entertainment). In musical theater irl, its main purpose is acting & telling a story while singing & dancing. So rather than like a Japanese idol contest, I can see why they shifted the main focus from competing against other Pokemon into like a more “just for fun” type of thing. I do wish they could have done more to make the gameplay more engaging, but I can also see what their idea came from And then in BW2, we got PokeStar which is based on Hollywood, which is the other very important form of entertainment that originated in the States. It definitely has more engaging gameplay from its interactive system
I wish they would make an entire side game mini series based on it. I wouldn't know how they would manage it, but It would be nice. It could possibly a full rhythm game like Bdsp, but with more complexities to it. They could add far more than 4 tracks and 4 stages to dance on. And this could give them an excuse to sprite the gen 6 and beyond pokemon. I just think it's a fun time waster. Especially when I can see Zekrom dancing on stage dressed up with a skirt and a pink bow :)
On one hand, I’d love a full game for Contests / Musicals, because they could expand it even more so, but I think having it in the main games is great because you can participate with your favorite Pokémon you caught, we’re given, or transferred up. Unless Game Freak made it and allowed comparability with Pokémon Home, but that’s a BIG wish list item, haha.
They really should′ve let your Pokémon wear these props outside of Musicals, that would′ve been a great customization feature that wouldn′t been a fitting companion to Sinnoh′s Seals! I′m willing to bet that Game Freak were originally going to do just that, but then they realized that people would want that feature in future games and reduced it to a simple rhythm minigame.
I'm kind of ashamed to say I knew about this incredibly small feature in a game I've never played, due to it never appealing to me in the same way as the rest of the games throughout the series.
“So you have a new Pokémon gimmick for me” “Yes sir I do, i was thinking in Pokémon black and white there would be an event similar to contests or pokeathalon” “Oh cool, do you have to feed your Pokémon food to raise its stats higher?” “No, you just put them in funny costumes and touch the screen a few times” “So there is nothing interesting about this mechanic” “Yes” “We’ll it seems like a waste of time for the players playing the game, it won’t effect anything” “But it’s super easy, barely an inconvenience to code it in the game” “Yea I guess your right”
Honestly I didn’t mind the musicals I liked dressing up my Pokémon as a kid and I hope they make it so you can dress up your Pokémon again but it shows in battle just to add another layer of customization to your Pokémon, it would be fun to battle with Pokémon dressed up in silly outfits
I really really hope we get some kind of contest again in Scarlet and Violet. That's my favorite kind of gameplay mode, I genuinely love becoming the Contest Queen in every game that I can. Plus ribbons are rad
I love how he shows his wii u in the end credits of the video do you still use the Nintendo Wii u in your room by the way I really like your white Wii u
Yep, I never got too deep into those, but I thought it was a neat idea. I mostly remember it from the anime version, since I watched XY a few months ago, haha.
Okay, so this isn't really explained super well in the game itself, but the way you actually win musicals is to keep the spotlight on you longer than any other Pokémon. That's why the hand props are there, the spotlight shines only on you when you use one. You can even stop a Pokémon from having a spotlight shine on them by using your item at the right time to get it to shine on you instead, although the exact same can be done to you by opponents, so be careful. Your Pokémon can hold as many items as they have hands, so if you mess up with one item, you can just try again with a different item if you have any extras. Also, there are rewards in this mode, but only in the form of the props you get in the main lobby, you only get the props from them if you do really well, and if you don't, they still appear, but won't give you anything. I hope this helps you understand it better, as again, they do not explain it very well.
I didn't even know these existed, at least I don't remember knowing! I gotta say it looks... strange haha Weirdly enough, at least when compared to the current Gen5 love we see everywhere, BW and B2W2 were games that never appealed to me, so a lot of things on them just passed me by without leaving any form of nostalgia or wonder. I still played them multiple times, but I remember that was the time when I started the TCG and those games became #2 on my Pokémon life 😅
Black and white were not my first pokemon games but since im not english native it was the first time I could understand what the game was saying so they kinda were my first. I played them a lot as a kid but even them the musicals felt empty and unfinishsed.
Contests were my favorite things in Pokémon. I considered it similar and it was actually hard 😅 But I was sad once they stopped including the other side to Pokémon. Cmon dog shows are wayyyy more popular than dog fighting! Beauty Contests I'd say these days are less but still contrast with fighting sports.
Piplup's a weak pokemon to start in pokemon d.p.p, so I used it in pokemon black & white 2 for pokemon musical. Evan Tartwig fits for pokemon musical & studio. Piplup for pokemon musicals, & Tartwig for pokemon studio.
The Pokéstar Studios side mode was a lot more fleshed out, strategic and fun than Musicals, with multiple ways of performing in them; it′s on a completely different level.
I remember putting my zekrom in this musicals wearing a tiara and a colorful parasol
The prettiest Zekrom in Unova

Me too.
They don't make sense anymore
I had a lot of fun with Pokemon Musicals in Gen 5 I made my Garchomp more adorable rather then intimidating.
Garchomp was made for the stage

I remember these very well, actually. I was really into them when I was younger! It's still fun to dress up my Pokemon, honestly.
I always thought the accessories and props were a fun feature
@@GatorEX They really are :]
Oh So You Think Pokémon Musicals Were Obscure? Tell Me What The Wonder Launcher Was.
I know what the Wonder Launcher was, and I wish it was still a thing.
The thing that lets you use items in PvP Battles 😎 honestly loved it for battles with friends. Kinda wish it was still an option.
Not gonna lie, when I played Black and White as a kid and battled against my friends, I didn’t even know you could turn that off. So every single battle I did had the Wonder Launcher in it lol
i have watched obscure pokemon fact videos for years and have never heard of that
The hell is a wonder launcher?
My Audino might not have being the strongest on my og white team but she was the bigest musical diva of Unova
No reason the girl had to do musicals, Cilan totally could have been a musical Connoisseur.
Ooh could you also speak about the Pokestar Studios ? I just love the costumes the main character wears during the movies and the stories ^^
I loved some of the movie concepts, especially the time machine one.
Yeah that was great ^^ An interesting twist on the Pokemon world. I don't know which one is my favorite though. I like the outfit in The Giant Woman. Its almost liek musicals and contests arent the same thing 🤧
2:39 I don't know about that. Black Kyurem would probably tear up the musical scene.
An electrifying performance ⚡️
I honestly spend hours in the musical as a kid, put my Pokémon master on hold so I could dress up my Oshawott.
I actually loved using the musical simply because I liked seeing my pokemon dance around for 3 minutes
High School PokeMusical. XD
Also, get PATRAT'D, NERRRRD. :]]
nooooooo
I played these musicals so much that I suffered burnout and didn't play Pokémon White again until maybe a year later
I participated once with each member of my team, I dressed them all with sunglasses, ties and some random hat based on what looked more ridiculous for each one.
Also I was bothered by how props wouldn't go on correctly to a lot of Pokémon
Would have been cool if you could customize your pokemon outside of musicals using the accessories you unlock
You think the musicals were obscure? Bro I loved the musicals and was always trying to figure out how I could make my Pokémon look the best!
‘What am I doing with my life?’ Anyone who played every generation of Pokémon at least once
I spent so much time with Pokémon musicals beacose dreasing them and looking at the Pokémon dancing is funy especialy with Pokémons that are intimidating in the cute category
iris appreciation thread? im here for it
for some reason i spent a LOT of time doing the musicals. i think i too just wanted to collect every prop

pokemon musicals tripped over their own feet so that the movie place could run

I played & put pokemon platinum starter pokemon in pokemon black & white 2's pokemon musical, to play with my nephews. It was my connection to them.
This was my favourite feature!
I keep playing untill today
I made my Krokorok use a top hat, a bow tie and a cane. Every NPC liked
I played this game and enjoyed the musicals
Gen 3-4 contests > musicals > Gen 8 “contest”
I loved this mini game for the music, the accessories you can put on your Pokemon, and the unique atmosphere. I really enjoyed it a lot. 🥰
Kidnap the Sandy Claws!
I'm kind of ashamed to say I knew about this incredibly small feature in a game I've never played, due to it never appealing to me in the same way as the rest of the games throughout the series.
Even a 5 'till 7 year old child can play those stuff.
“So you have a new Pokémon gimmick for me”
“Yes sir I do, i was thinking in Pokémon black and white there would be an event similar to contests or pokeathalon”

I loved dressing up my scolipede
I still remember this tho, i almost spend half of my journey
I put Piplup, Tartwig & Chimchar in pokemon black & white 2 for the pokemon musicals. It was worth it.
I heard this is an Iris appreciation comment section and I'm all for it

Was scared for a minute i thought these were actual Games with physical release
I don’t know why, but I used to do Pokémon Musical’s a lot when I was younger
I really really hope we get some kind of contest again in Scarlet and Violet. That's my favorite kind of gameplay mode, I genuinely love becoming the Contest Queen in every game that I can.
Plus ribbons are rad
There Is something unique about Musical
With Mawile
i still don't have that "10 followers" musical medal in my black 2 save file today
I really like the overall DS shot for the video!
I love how he shows his wii u in the end credits of the video do you still use the Nintendo Wii u in your room by the way I really like your white Wii u
Speaking of obscure features, anyone remember the PR Videos from X & Y?
If I Remember Correctly, Those Were Weird Videos With Your Main Character Right?
Yep, I never got too deep into those, but I thought it was a neat idea. I mostly remember it from the anime version, since I watched XY a few months ago, haha.
Pokemon musicals were fun! I loved listening to the music
Someone disliked this, and I genuinely have no idea why
It was Eugene and his Patrat

Pokémon contests coulda been amazing but they kinda fell to the wayside. With seals the competition online could have been like the anime in time.
Maybe that's why Best Wishes went with Iris instead of Hilda, and made her a worse version of Misty (who already overstayed her welcome).
I adored these!!

Early gang 😎
I wanna remake BW in 3D, and this includes the Musicals.
I don't remember this musical thing. Haven't played my black and white long time.
I love gen 5, it's my favorite generation. But musicals and movies.... Yeah, those modes kinda just felt like wasted development time to me.
The Pokéstar Studios side mode was a lot more fleshed out, strategic and fun than Musicals, with multiple ways of performing in them; it′s on a completely different level.
the movies game mode is amazing, I love them and its very entertaining and unique. wish newer games have these side contents stuff
Pokemon Musicals would of been better if you at least got ribbons, I know some people like collecting ribbons
Yeah, never got why we didn’t at least get a ribbon for participation. Since ribbons are still around in SWSH.
Can you eventually talk about the Poketoon episodes when they released them all in English?
Is it bad that I was really good at pokemon musicals xD I loved the contests and musicals and movies they were great!
The anime was far better off with the Battle Clubs than the Musicals. It was the right choice
It fit for kindergarden & 1st grade class kids, in my point of view😏.
why did you choose bdsp footage when talking about actual skill
Iris appreciation thread 🥶
I actually dislike serena, because every person ships her with ash
I remember this mini game, it felt shallow and repetitive.
Pokémon contests in the diamond and pearl... Are horrible very flat... No improvement... It became guitar hero pokémon edition 😡
It’s my birthday
Happy Birthday! 🎉

That’d be a cool one to look back on! Need to relearn it all, but I remember liking it.
Charmender, Chikorita, Torchick, Piplup & Snivy fit for pokemon musical, 'cause they're the worst starter pokemon.
No I didn't
The worst starter pokemon games of gen 1 'till gen 5 in 2d mode only fit for pokemon musicals.
