Oh yeah! Black and White are my favorites in the series! That's also why I really enjoyed your translations on the games and things relating to it befor its release.
I really liked BW from the start, not just now that nostalgia is causing many fans to see it in a brighter light right now. I think the small change of including Hilbert/Hilda in the sequel games like Red in Johto would have made this gen the fan favorite by far.
This was Game Freak's most ambitious move in the series. And people STILL complained, even to the best ideas about these games (such as restricting the main story to new Pokémon). That's why I blame them, and not Game Freak itself, for the series's current situation.
B/W was my first Pokemon game and I recall being surprised to see Pokemon from previous gens when I completed the game. I thought each Pokemon game only had Pokemon from their gen. I know if I had the choice to catch other pokemon, I wouldn't be nearly as attached to Gen 5's Pokemon
It made very polarizing decisions, with only new Pokemon at main story (while you see it as a positive, I see it as a negative), some iffy designs at that time (didn't know the Dragons were supposed to be more colorful; at that time I thought they felt much less epic compared to the box legends that preceded them, with the plain colors being one of those reasons), the routes looked too linear compared to the previous gens, and it doesn't help that the anime didn't help make a good impression. B2W2 answered many of those issues for players (story roster and routes), but it wasn't let to breathe as XY will release a year after it. Felt Gen 5 (and B2W2 in particular) would've been received better if XY was released a year more, which probably could've helped Gen 6 too in adding more content.
@@zjzr08 Why do you see "new Mons only" as a negative? It's their introduction, they need the spotlight, whereas from XY onwards the new Pokémon are barely noticeable.
Okaaaaay buddy don't let nostalgia cloud your judgement. Pokémon X and Y weren't as good obviously, but Sun and Moon was a SOLID addition to the series.
@El Realista hey gen 7 isn’t nearly the worst. From an objective stance 1 is the worst ( bugs horrible balance lacking content ect) sure the tutorials ended up making the game’s pacing slower then even diamond and pearl and the abuse of cutscenes lessened their impact when needed most but at least the level balance is ok. So it actually did something right so it’s better then gen 6 which tried a bunch of things and did none of them well
I love gen 5 so much, I’m sad to hear the fact about Lenora being poorly accepted. I was happy at her design and was pleasantly surprised at her personality.
same. she never seemed racist to me. people who immediately go to racism whenever they see a character of color stunt the movement probably even more than actual racists... they make a big deal over any minority character that isnt perfect, when you would never treat a white character that way. the point is for everyone to be equal...
Hate to rain on your parade but why would you be excited? The design philosophy for the series dramatically shifted since the release of the first two games so a 3rd one would undoubtedly disappoint unless something seriously changed.
@@soapbiter36577 that's my fear for both gen 4 and gen 5 remakes. With the design philosophy pokemon has now, I'd rather skip those two regions unless they seriously shift it.

Those trainers, when battled in the PWT, in game could use the male trainer's sprite, I think. You might've also met them in Pokémon Black/White in Nimbasa City at the Pokémon Battle Subway.
Honestly, the fact that there's 22 minutes of facts and trivia for gen 5 shows that Game Freak really wanted to capture the best parts of every thing they saw or thought of, and put a lot of effort into smaller details, that nobody would have noticed.
Black & White had the coolest aesthetic all-around imo. The characters, the Pokemon, the setting, the theme; I was about 19 when it released, and it really revitalized my love for the franchise. The animated sprites were so awesome to see, and it’s really sad to think about how short-lived this era was.
Fun fact: Hydreigon actually only has one head, the one in the middle. The other two “heads” are actually its arms, which look like extra heads to intimidate prey.
Well, there's a theory that Grass type starters all are based on ancient or extinct animals. Bulbasaur represents some kind of dinosaur (it even has prehistoric-looking plants on its back when fully evolved), Meganium is a sauropod, Sceptile is a raptor, Torterra is an anklyosaur, and Serperior is a snake with legs. Ancient ancestors to snakes had tiny vestigial legs before they evolved to be entirely legless. Btw if you're curious about the future generations, Chesnaut is a giant sloth, Decidueye is a type of ground owl that was hunted to extinction (also possibly referenced by its Ghost typing), and Rillaboom is a caveman.

@@nicodalusong149 not at all. The only good thing that Game Freak put effort into was the pokemon's designs. The rest of the games' aspects lack all kinds of effort or originality.
@@alvaronavarro4895 I can't agree or disagree with you if you don't specify what aspects you take issue with. If it is a graphics issue though, then spare me, I really don't mind the game looking how it does.
@@nicodalusong149 No. Not graphics. The Landscaping IS Bad as hell. The pokemon's sizes could've been properly scaled, the animations are soulless and badly executed, the Story IS poor, the game feels rushed, the DLC is quite meh and short as hell.
@@alvaronavarro4895 Could you expound more on why the landscaping is bad? I don't exactly know enough to say whether it is or not. I'll give them a pass for scaling and animations since this is the first main line games on the system but I will agree that they could have implemented the pokemon following your character around a lot better like what was done in Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee. So it is clear, in what way are you saying the story is bad? The story is short (not too much of an issue) and some bits did need better pacing but they managed to address most of what they brought up in-game. The character development for Hop was really good since he was basically the other protagonist. He had an alternate Silver story arc to cover (i.e.: he cared for his pokemon and trusted them but he still needed skill, his own battle style and the resolve to continue after being wiped by Bede). The characters that probably needed more time to shine in-game were Marnie (she's mostly just there when she needs to be) and Oleana (so her work-stress-induced rage is more understandable). Originality-wise, we finally got a dark gym and an adequate reason for it to be such in the lore, it is the first time we don't have an actual villain in the story, it is the first time two of your rivals become gym leaders at the end of the story and not in a different game, it is the first time we get a rival who wants to become a professor, it is the first time someone becomes a professor over the course of the game. So, there was originality because they tried new stuff. The dlc we've gotten so far is good. The Ilse of Armor probably isn't as good as Crown Tundra but I like it anyway since I understand and appreciate the martial arts movie tropes and references they were going for. The Crown Tundra is definitely worth the 20~25$ (I think Ilse of armor is worth 5~10$) simply because it has replay value in the form of the dynamax adventures and the Galarian All-Star Tournament. The dynamax adventures basically gives you free, easy-to-catch, shiny-chance legendaries and hidden ability pokemon and the tournament gives you free clothes if you fulfill certain conditions and two unlockable characters if you play enough times (and both basically give more lore). If this is still all meh, then I really don't know what to say.
@@Dorado_Boy I had a similar idea to this. One where in the game you first play through the events of Black and White, and then after some "2 years later" text boom you play through Black 2 and White 2. And maybe there could be some option to switch between the two playthroughs. Since Black and Black 2 are one timeline, just like White and White 2, there could be two games with names like "Pokémon Black: The Saga" and "Pokémon White: The Saga" or something like that. And of course there could be more plot added such as more lore on the original dragon. Sorry about my rambling.

To be fair though, the starters aren't as well liked as any generation before it, the most well liked gen 5 Pokemon aren't really available until midgame, a lot of the Pokemon(especially early ones) are basically reimaginings of gen 1 mons so they cant really win the popularity Contest and most importantly, they took away every other Pokemon, so that u were forced to exclusively use new pokemon, such as the starter type monkeys, that look kinda weird and like shit when evolved(except the grass one, he passes). I’ve been watching DYKG for almost 10 years now. It was one of the first UA-cam subscriptions I had in high school. I live this channel and everything you guys do. Please never stop with the awesome information!
the deino line is literally german numbers: dEINo, ZWEIlous and hyDREIgon. (ein=1 zwei=2 drei=3) so if they wanted hydreigon to have 8 heads, he would have been called hyACHTgon i guess...
The names probably came after they decided on three heads. They did a similar theme with the Kanto legendary birds, so maybe someone in Game Freak loves number puns? :D
But it's true though that the names of the Deino line were concieved while thinking about their number of heads: Monozu, Dihead, Sazandora (this one has the "san" pronunciation, which means three).
Eins is German for the digit 1, with an S. „Ein“ only works when counting things, such as „ein Buch, zwei Bücher, drei Bücher“ (one/two/three book(s)).
Came into the series with gen 1 (around the time gen 2 was releasing) and gen 5 is definitely my favorite generation. Glad to see it finally getting the recognition it deserves. Looking forward to it crossing into overrated territory and completing its story arc.
there are some that will already call gen 5 overrated really. It's honestly been loved for years. but now for the past few years it's been REALLY loved.
Technically it is already happening. Gen 5 is great, but the fact that Emerald, Platinum and B2W2 were the games with the most content into them as compared to nowadays, and the fact that Gen 5 actually succeeded in having a plot is already making people clamor it a lot more now. I think it's going to be the exact opposite of Gen 8, which started with a lot of people supporting and defending it but will go down in history as the worst gen if Game Freak doesn't screw up any harder with Gen 9.
Am I the only one who doesn't really see how Lenora was racist?Yeah, she had a apron, and her nickname had "momma", but I don't see it otherwise. Although I have to admit Lenora's censored design looks cooler.
i dont think the design was racist in itself but the us has treated black people so badly over the centuries that even things that arent malicious in intent end up mimicking a stereotype or something else. also i agree about her changed outfit looking better
i think gamefreak probably didnt do enough research. i know that I hadnt heard of the 'mammy' stereotype before i read about lenora's controversy. its probably not something intended - gamefreak was probably thinking 'lets do a woman whos black, strong, a leader, independent!' and settled for a lady whos got motherly instincts. unfortunately, the way she was designed RESEMBLED the mammy stereotype - which is why people didnt like it. there was definetly no ill intent, just gamefreak messing up by accident. either way her new design is cooler
It's a stereotype but there is nothing wrong with it.it's completly positive and there is nothing demeaning about it, plus i know people who are exactly like that. Basically the western world is dumb and twitter users should be castrated
You also the type to see nothing wrong with the og design of Jinx? Essentially, they are offensive for the same reason. I totally get it if you just don’t care though 🤷🏾♂️
Rose of Versailles is actually derived from a manga from '67 (later made into an anime) called Princess Knight by Osamu Tezuka with similar themes but set in more of a fantasy world.
I remember being so excited for these games when I was a kid. I remember going to UA-cam and watching videos of someone fighting the Elite Four in the Japanese version because it came out before the English versions. These were such awesome video games.
Despite its English name, Bouffalant was designed after the American *bison,* not a buffalo. While that has been a common nickname for the animal, true buffalo live in Asia and do not have such fluffy heads.

I really liked BW from the start, not just now that nostalgia is causing many fans to see it in a brighter light right now. I think the small change of including Hilbert/Hilda in the sequel games like Red in Johto would have made this gen the fan favorite by far.
Agreed. Also missed out on incorporating the difficulty option properly (imagine needing BOTH games to change your difficulty 😐)

@El Realista exactly my point. Ten years ago when Black and White were released, it would be blasphemous to compare Gen 5 with, say, Gen 3.
@El Realista that's what they said about Gen 5 when it came out. The cycle just continues. Old good, new bad.

I think it's going to be the exact opposite of Gen 8, which started with a lot of people supporting and defending it but will go down in history as the worst gen if Game Freak doesn't screw up any harder with Gen 9.
@@jpcsdutra eh...USUM had quite a bit of content to I feel.
"Serperior has hands behind it's back" EXCUSE ME WHERE THE ARMS?!
Two little leaves. Fun fact, they also work as hands for Pokemon Musicals
Behind ots back
That older dwebble design would be a sick fire/bug regional variant.
Serperior has hands hiding behind
Me: "How many other lies have I been told by the council?"
17:48 and thus this sketch was made into Tomura from My hero academia
Few words can describe just how much love I have for this game. For me Sinnoh, Unova and Hoenn are top 3.
YES me too!!
sinnoh mid
@@arilololololol good for you
Man, imagine knowing that you yourself are cut data in a game
really interesting, the vision and passion really explains why that generation had such good pokemon, rival and professor characters, and mechanics.
12:32 "Serpirior actually has hands" WHAT, HAVE MANY LIES HAVE BEEN TOLD?!
Ah yes. The big three continents. Europe, China and Japan.
@ so, you want to assume, the native Nations of the American continents didn’t have culture?
He said three unique cultures. Not three continents.
@@sackthebastard Still makes sense..
Wow N's original design looks a lot like Shigaraki from My Hero.
All he need is the mask then the look is complete😂
Gen 5 was the absolute peak of Pokemon. It never got better than this
"Serperior has hands, it just folds them behind his back" You just shattered my entire world view.
Rose of Versailles is actually derived from a manga from '67 (later made into an anime) called Princess Knight by Osamu Tezuka with similar themes but set in more of a fantasy world.
I requested this video almost 2 years ago. Glad to see it finally realized!
@Carter?
I remember being so excited for these games when I was a kid. I remember going to UA-cam and watching videos of someone fighting the Elite Four in the Japanese version because it came out before the English versions. These were such awesome video games.
6:01 (Take it out of context lol)
"Many of Unova's Pokemon were made with a New York theme. Like Trubbish and Garbodor, who look like trash bags."
We've finally saw the colorful version too
The footage from chuggaconroy's let's play makes me want to rewatch it
I like your Braviary is named "Amerikuh". Excellent touch, 10/10 would take that name.
Edit: Roc for your Archeops is also tops.
Heh funny how Roc the archeops is actually from chuggaconroy and I probably misspelled it.
Despite its English name, Bouffalant was designed after the American *bison,* not a buffalo. While that has been a common nickname for the animal, true buffalo live in Asia and do not have such fluffy heads.
Africa as well.
Everything I know is a lie.
8:28 Daramuka missing fire punch right when he talks about the dolls being thanked for their good luck is really funny to me
I personally enjoyed B/W/B2/W2. Games were awesome, the leader of TP was difficult as was the E4. I especially loved the music and the fact that they made the main story line exclusive to the Pokemon in Unova. Gave it a real challenge it did.
But there is an ant pokémon, Durant.
Who actually was a gen 5
Pokemon Black & White is the Pokemon of my childhood!
Me too!
"Matsuda visited New York and saw 'A world without borders'"
This twisted game needs to be reset.
Am I missing something? Is there a reference here I don't get? Somebody please explain it to my dumb dumb brain.
@@matthaisstupidus It's a reference to the final mission dialogues from the game Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, which at some point involved a terrorist group known as "A World With No Boundaries"
@@darrylaz3570 ok I see. Never heard of it
I was expecting a "gen 5 music hits different" meme lol. Good job on the video as usual!
Gen 5 is my favorite Pokémon Generation since it’s the first generation that I got started with, and I become a fan of the franchise ever since, pre ordering my physical copy of the next game and even going to see the live action Pokémon Detective Pikachu movie(which I own a Blu-ray, DVD copy of)
This vídeo is great. Gen five pokemon games are my all time favorite. The music, Pokemon, gym leaders, lore ... Those games are really great and unique
That was when Game Freak was at their best.
People complained about how different it was. That’s why they went with all the Gen 1 pandering Gen 6 onward. Now people want it back not realizing how good it was.
Now they kinda lazy on creating Pokémon what next a bed 🛏 Pokémon Lol 😂
@@salomonjr8014 The pokemon designs in the newer games aren't even bad for the most part. Just the games surrounding them are weak.
Nope Gen 2 was better
@Ice dp+pl+hgss>bw+b2w2
It always annoyed me that the starters of the US-centric region felt like they were inspired by non-US cultures. Now I know why! Thank you, DYKG
Despite what people say about Gen 5 being the worst, I genuinely think it was the best and was the pinnacle of the DS games. Particularly for the unique Pokémon designs, and for the narrative + expansive story that really brought it to be one of my favorite games ever. Not to mention Black and White 2 was a wonderfully made sequel.
B&W must have been their last Pokemon games if they still think that 😂
Legitimately sad that we didn't get a battle against the BW protags in BW2
It took place 2 years after that battle happened in the previous game that’s why
