The Story of Time Attack and 'Under' Suzuki

- Time attack is a form of motorsport where the goal is simply the achieve the fastest lap possible. While this concept is simple, the cars are far from it with outlandish aerodynamics, high horsepower, complex suspension, crazy brake setups and more. While learning about the history of the sport this past winter I thought it might be a fun side project to make a brief video on the people and cars involved. While this only scratches the surface I think it's still a great story and I hope you enjoy it!
I'd seen some videos by the very talented youtuber, Summoning Salt, that looked at speedrunning in games, so I decided to make a video in his style on what is essentially a speedrun in real life with real cars! His channel is / summoningsalt .
I think the World Time Attack Challenge, WTAC, is going to be great in a few months so I wanted to finish this video in time to hype up the event a bit and showcase some of the cars that will be competing in 2021. Maybe in the future I'll provide some updates, looks at other stories I didn't include in this, or look to other veins in the automotive world! Thanks for watching!

The Story of Time Attack and 'Under' Suzuki
#timeattack #car #racing - Авто та транспорт
My favorite part is the Japanese companies and drivers, while competitive and fierce, we’re always friendly with eachother. There weren’t any cutthroat shenanigans.
I agree
This is the way motorsports should be.
that exact thing is why i love the 24 Hours of Lemons racing series. junk cars running a 24 hour endurance race. the paddock is FULL of teams helping other teams keep their terrible cars on the track the whole weekend. it's incredibly fun, and people who arent filthy rich can participate, since the beginning value of the car cannot exceed 500 dollars!
Right? Unlike most egotistical and juvenile minded Americans that'll fight each other to the death over words.
@@ghomerhustit's not limited to 500 too though, I've heard heaps of stories of cars worth wayy more entering just to lose. It's so funny
For anyone who was wondering the all time record at Tsukuba is a 44.088 set in 2015. It wasn't a time attack record but instead it was a Super Formula lap time set by Kamui Kobayashi (The same person who set the 3:14.791 time at Le Mans)
Summoning salt inspired car content is the video I didn't know I wanted 😁 subscribed
Under suzuki's story is awesome
I love how in depth you go. Stay badass my boi
As soon as I heard the tune I had to check who I was watching.
the second the song started i ran to the comments bro you do not understand
@@helenlelidis1 oh I do.
@@helenlelidis1 we do c:
I love that some of the drivers and tuners had regular, non-motorsport jobs during the day. What a time.
HOW DOES THIS NOT HAVE 1 MILLION VIEWS? Fantastic video on my favourite motorsport. I too am also awaiting Suzuki's return in the S15 eager to see a new time bracket achieved. Thank you for this!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Nice s15 btw, looks super clean!
@@HuntersMoon much appreciated! That car is now on a rotisserie getting fully build!
I was lucky enough to drive all these car on Gran Turismo 🤩
The best content is for those in the know. Truely unique!
Because they aren’t a bunch of clout chasing idiots.
Had a chance to be in the same team with Tarzan Yamada in Super Taikyu. Was amazed that he could take a nap when it was not his stint. He was calm like it was just another day in life.
We need more content like this on youtube, as much as I love drifting I'm tired of hearing the same old story and time attack needs to be explored more.
"don't u dare put on your seatbelts"
I had high expectations when I heard the summoning salt music - but you crushed it! This video is sooo good! Please keep 'em coming.
This is one of my favorite videos. Partially for the Under spotlight, partially for the well done & informative script, partially for overall being very well done & engaging throughout. Thanks for creating this.
Thanks Adam, I really appreciate it!
ooooohhh this finally explains all those weird one off tuner cars in Gran Turismo! It's so cool to see the stories behind those cars, as a kid playing GT2-6 I never knew what the Mines skylines or that crazy red evo with a million horsepower were, and I suspect many of the other tuner cars (Amuse GT1 Turbo?) were built for similar purposes
I remember being at wtac in 2019 and seeing some of the tyres on the pro/pro-am cars being removed in the pits with large chunks of tread ripped up and flapping about. I mentioned this to a friend that year and then this happened.
29:34 It was a tyre delamination that occurred. While it was something that occurred to other teams (Tilton and RP968) those happened after a couple of push laps that caused their tyres to overload. Part of the reason Under Suzuki's tyres failed unexpectedly was that it was a set of old tyres that, if I remember correctly, were meant as a display set, not for actual race use.
Also this is a very good round up of Time Attack. Thank you for making it. I'm personally hoping in the future UK Time Attack can bring back the insane Pro Class cars that feature in other areas of the world. With the debut of Gobstopper 3 hopefully in 2022, we'll see a resurgence in the UK.
Great video! I'd love to see stories of the the different tuner companies like Mines, MCR, Castrol Mugen, Spoon, and J's Racing. 😃
Thanks J, that's a great idea! I think a lot of them have some really interesting backstories
@@HuntersMoon waiting for that tho
Hector's running three spoon engines brooooooooo
this is video format is what i wanted from the car community where just from others don't do for us they just make it tiktok length while this the amount i want for the clips part to being. Thanks to this video i will tune in the WTAC
Found this channel today and you're already my favourite channel. Amazing videos my dude
As someone not familiar with the scene, fair play to HKS. A group of professional engineers with unlimited budget to push the boundaries is how new technology is developed. And from the past trends you can see how this eventually trickles down to the other teams. The TRB is like getting a glimpse into the future.
I hope this brings some more attention to time attack. it's my favorite motorsport category and would love to see it getting a little more popular
I love how you use the music to give that lost feeling of some sort of sentiment for a time past, even though I never lived it, it makes me miss it lol
Brilliant video. I never knew Time Attack was such an insane form of motorsport.
Thanks Dimitri! It really is wild how it's evolved so quickly
@@HuntersMoon Definitely, I always thought time attack cars looked like they did now, with them being barely stock extreme aero machines, but I would have never imagined for it to not only have had such a comparatively short history but also such a dense and evolving culture in that timeframe.
I guess I'm gonna plan to tune in on whatever events I can find. It looks awesome.
This was such a pleasure to watch seeing all these cars in video games and all over the internet through the years and now to know their story what made them so iconic and dominent made me really happy and inspired. Thank you so much for making this!
Thanks Roope! I appreciate it!
Yes please for stories from the tuners and the cars. For example S2000 why it‘s so good at time attack with little effort or how the GR Yaris performs and if it has potential to be the fastest.
I started to reply this, and knew someone had already said it. Fantastic channel
How do you not have more subscribers how does this have 4K views what the hell? Insanely underrated
Thanks Holto!
I never thought I would get through this whole video because my little lack of giving a care of time attack but you seem to have keep it entertaining. Good job on all your video’s. I am enjoying your whole video catalog well done.
This was your first video according to the dates posted!! You started out solid and are getting even better. I will be sure to like and subscribe. Good media
This is not just a competition. But creativity how to make a car fast.
Great to see WTAC included here. I’ve been to almost every event since 2011 and have been waiting for Under’s first win since about as long. Those few year in the early-to-mid 2010s were something special, and it’s crazy to see how far and how quickly his S15 developed.
just gotta say good on ya for shouting out summoning salt and not just stealing his format we all know and love in gaming.
I feel blessed seeing younger NOB.
No one better
this video NEEDS to blow up
It's obvious that there's some inspiration from summoningsalt here, so i think the best praise i can give is that this video matches that quality too. It's probably been said before, but this video is as good as many other "history of"s with millions of views. Very informative and concise without being boring at all.
ive enjoyed this more than anything else I have ever seen on UA-cam, thank you so much for producing this , it filled many gaps in my knowledge and inspired me to keep working on my TA RX7 build.
Highly underrated video ! Thanks for the video upload vro, definitely learned alot !
I watched a few of your videos now and especially after this last one I just had to Subscribe videos are very well. Put together and very informative. I couldn't appreciate it anymore than I do now. Thank you very much.
Your vids are a service to car lovers man. Pls dont stop.
nice edit mate. thanks!
This channel deserves more views! this video alone just gives me hope that the tuner culture will live on even when electric cars start to dominate the tracks.
Nothing like a revving engine that burns fuel and pushing more power by adjusting many elements around the powertrain. I really dont think I'll personally get into electric car racing, theres something about a combustion engine and the sound of loud exhaust passing by!
what is this video honestly, it's the best!, thank you! hope it gets more attention.
“Using their resources, HKS once again assembled the Avengers of Time Attack”
Under, “Gather the Infinity Stones”
Such a good watch! Have a subscription!
props to this guy for following the salt format so well
Time Attack is the best thing about motorsports and has inspired everything on my own street car. Thanks for the incredible video!
You did a very good job replicating Summoning Salt's style, but I'd recommend thinking about how you use pauses in your sentences... they're very good to place emphasis and build suspense. Gl bro!
I love tha nature of this video and the way you blend it with music!
Know you probably heard this many many times but your video was so good I couldn't help myself wanting to say what an amazing job you did. I can tell you put in a tons of research that me nor anyone will probably ever know but damn you did so much information and so well put together, you deserve to feel proud about making this.
Such a well put together, informative video. I'm sure it's going to blow up soon. You really managed to get the spirit of the sport across. I enjoyed every second of this. Thank you!
Almost Gears and gasoline level of editing. Awesome documentary
All i can say is thank you for making this video.Time attack is my favorite motorsport along with hillclimb, rally and slalom and Tomohiko Suzuki and Yoshiki Ando are my absolute all-time favorite time attack racers and true legends.Suzuki's S15,Tilton's Evo 9,Yoshiki's Evo 9,Top Fuel Voltex S2000 and MCA S13 are my all-time favorite time attack cars. Some stuff i didn't know about Suzuki are nicely explained in this video as well.Beautiful documentary and great job.
Great documentary!
I had high expectations for this video and somehow, through all the context and backstory, you have made this a master class.
Thank you :D
Ooo that 80s synth intro was so sick! Great video as always Moon!
DK's reaction to the MINE's R34 is amazing.
I literally watch this video every day to motivate me to work on my car and get it to the WTAC level. It is great motivation and inspiration. Rome was not built in a day.
Great vid, really enjoyed this, the touge and Wangan one. Glad the algorithm steered me here
Great documentary bro. I had enjoy all those cars and their drivers are on another driving skills thanks bro for those special moments.
This was absolutely amazing, so much history. Thank you for going into so much detail, loved every bit of it.
Amazing video. I've been doing time attack for 5 years now. My Toyota 86 went from 54s to 49s at my local track :)
I just found your channel. I have already binged most of your videos. All that I have seen are very well done and well researched. Absolutely fascinating!!
amazing video, very informative and well put together. also loved the insight into under's background, huge respect to him too
Thanks Jensen, I appreciate the kind comment! Under really seems like a great guy, can't wait to see what he does next!
This is a truly SUPERB documentary! I previously had next to no real knowledge of Time Attack yet still sat, watched and LOVED this. An incredible piece of work, I am defo subscribing.
Thanks Dave, I really appreciate it!
I love the use of home instrumentals 🤌
This is by far the best documentary, congrats for the job! Time attack always have been amazing😍
cant believe I am 3 yrs late on this video. Spectacular.
Awesome vid dude! Seeing those early 2000's time attack cars really brought me back! I still have all the magazines from back then that I read about them in
This video must have taken so much time to put together. I loved this, hope to see more!!
Good luck with your own time attack builds!
I hope you do get that chance to compete. I have the bug too man, I want to take my '86 Mustang SVO when it is ready to debut it in this event at Tsukuba. Please make more videos, you have a gift for it man. Do a deep dive on Cale Yarborough. He is on his way out and a true legend, and yes I am his kinfolk because I know people will ask. The man is a true inspiration and hard charger. I think that you would do his legacy justice by putting something together about him while he is alive to see it. If not I won’t be mad at you. Your videos are great man, very well put together!
I've seen many videos of racing in Japan but damn this video goes above and beyond. It's amazing and keep creating very informative but entertaining videos.
Thanks Roger!
This is the most epic car video I've watched in ages - thank you!!!!
Absolutely love this content
It's perfect to listen to at work and I'm craving more
Please keep up the astronomical quality of your videos and have an amazing day
Fantastic video and you deserve way more views
Great greeeaat video! Thanks for edit it ! Its amazing! Keep going. It motivates us so much to keep going in motorsport
your documentary is somewhat competitive... - simply wonderful!
love the "stranger things" soundtrack ;)
These vids are top notch!
I can't believe how well made this documentary is made! well done!
Awesome video!!!!! As a novice time attack racer, it’s gets me excited seeing how we got to the current inception of time attack. I’m constantly trying to improve my setup for the Street Mod class and this video definitely gets me motivated
This is genuinely one of the most exciting automotive journalism videos I've watched in my entire f****** life. Your pacing was perfect editing was amazing if you made more videos like this I would watch every single one of them until you stop making them. Much love to you man fantastic job keep it up please thing!
Thanks Wade, that means a lot!
Thank you for putting together this documentary. I had heard about Under through other videos but I never really knew his story.
Discovered your channel today and it's outstanding! Thanks for these incredible videos.
I like the vibe you put into this video. It's got an older time feel to it but yet it reflects into modern time.
Your content is amazing. Very interesting and atmospheric. I love it!
What a great video, you single handidly explained several of the special cars of the very early Forza Motorsport titles 1 and 2, where I as a little child got the Mine's R34 or the red HKS Evo8 and always wondered since then what was so special about these cars. Now, more than ten years later, you gave me the answers. Thank you very much for that.
You motivate me to plug in the old Xbox or the 360 again and try out these time attack cars at Tsukuba.
Seeing the drastic developments of the RWD Silvia from Under Suzuki was very fascinating.
Good luck with your Silvia build in the future.
these master pieces are the only thing keeping me sane rn.
10/10 video mate! The effort put into this shows and I can’t wait for more 🤙
Ct230r is a part of my adolescences.. Tbh all these cars, growing up with Hot version videos and touge videos. I appreciated this documentary. I was super surprised Under Suzuki started in 2001 with that s15.
Been watching a few of your Doco's, there really good my man. Subscribed 🤘
This car was over the top ! Lifting the inside rear wheel in the rain at 2:14 shows it. This car was better than anything back in the 80's. Trust me I know ,I got to drive then new , The GLH turbo Dodge didn't stand a chase, the Daytona a small bit better. The GNX was a pig in a corner. The Cyclone was nutty fast in a s a straight line. This car was over the top. Wrx Xr4ti close this thing is still nuts.
Amazing story , never knew this all crazy times on time attack. After every one of your videos, i am leaving richer ! Thank you Moon !
What a incredible documentary! loved it and the format it was presented in
So much nostalgia, I read about all this in tunner magazines growing up . So well documented and narrated. So gooood
Its crazy how a Mkiv Supra recently did a ~ 54:4s Tsukuba lap over a second faster than the full factory tube shelled HKS Altezza shown here.
Simply amazing how you’ve put this video together I already know after watching it once I’ll definitely be watching this again no doubt about it
Thanks Caylum, I really appreciate it!
This kind of videos earned you a new subscriber!!! Awesome work and thank you!
Man absolutely amazing video! Just found your channel and definitely going to dig in to more of your videos
Absolutely fantastic video man!
This video is very well put together and explains everything extremely clear, I was around 9-10 playing forza 3 and always saw the mines GTR’s, I had no idea they held time attack records.. was neat to see the real DK, and I just recently learned about The Top Secret Tuner, “Smokey” these are cars Ive seen so much through my childhood, and knowing how much of a beast they truly were is fun to see. I really enjoyed this video, and the one on the most notable Porsche, For some reason these mini docs’s are just really well done, aesthetically and information wise, music isn’t annoying, and the commentator has an easy voice to listen to. I really hope you do more videos like this on lots of different Japanese auto sports.
Salute from another Canadian🤙🏻
rewatching this is amazing
This channel pure gold 🛠..
Beautiful video. Love the golden age of Japanese racing and the fact people are out their putting their love into the sport still to this day
Incredible storytelling! Go on my friend!
Holy shit, Summoning Salt for a subject I actually am in to lol. Nice work
even tho I'm like a year late but damn I enjoyed this video, thanks man hope you do more like this. Keeps my short attention span focused
Nice work on the video, man. Really high quality content!
Geoff with a G great work on this video mate! Interesting Entertaining Educational and Informative. Approximately 34 minutes ago i knew very little about TA, but 33 minutes later Im now educated on the basics, things i had no idea about such as the rules, the people and personalitys the legendary teams and workshops, and that's all thanks to your excellent efforts on this documentary. Oh for the record, the first time I did a track day at Sydney Motorsports Park I was on my street bike GSXR750 K7 and went home very happy with a 1:44.76 (Main Cct) So when u consider the fastest TA guys are doing 1:28s my head explodes 🤯
Such a great breakdown. I hope you can make an updated video on todays standings. Love from Canada.
