I heard a story once - on one of those comedy connections shows I think - where it mentioned Frank Kelly's audition for playing Father Jack (it might even have been Frank Kelly himself talking about it but I can't remember exactly). Apparently, he was a classically trained actor and everybody else in the show was a stand-up comedian with little or no acting background. He said that he was basically asked to sit in a corner and shout "Drink! Feck! Arse! Girls!." Being a proper actor, he absolutely nailed it. The irony being that the character who mostly just shouts profanity is the only one in the show who was actually an actor at the time.
@@richardroberts7633 I saw something years ago and I'm sure the writers were talking about this but I could be misremembering. I'm potentially doing Pauline a disservice if she in fact was a proper actor beforehand! It would explain why she was so good! Maybe they were referring to the three main characters; I'm pretty confident Frank Kelly was the only one of those three who had an acting background.
Absolutely 1st : - I love Father Ted , & the Father Ted series was , & remains the Funniest thing ever on TV ( NO QUESTION ) Father Ted quote : Life Is Like A Thin Slither Of Light In Between Two Immensity's Of Darkness . Father Ted : R.I.P. WE WILL NEVER FORGET 😢
"Slither" is what snakes do. You're thinking of "sliver" : a small thin piece of something. I theorise that this error comes from not wanting to sound uneducated, like people who say "muvva" instead of "mother". In this case it backfires.
Love how the catholics get out of serious difficulties with their interpretations of the Bible by saying it's an Ecumunical matter, just like the FBI does with with unexpected People who committed suicide in their care, that that is a Republican matter !!!! 😂
The scene where he emerges from the covers next to poor, traumatised Len, is fantastic. As if the rabbit invasion wasn't enough already. But we must remember, that Jack is a rabbit god 🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🦘🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🇯🇵🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇
Father Jack was a fabulous character, Frank Kelly must have had such fun playing him.
He went on to say in an interview he didn't like playing him at all
Both him and Dermot are sorely missed this could have been so many more episodes
@@Chillywilliewhere did he say that every interview I’ve seen him in he said he loved it?
@@Philljag let me Google it for ya bro
The audience applauding as he absconds from the plane with all the drink is a thing of beauty.
Every scene with father Jack is the best scene.
Absolutely fantastic. Father Jack was a 💎🤣

I could discuss my favourite Father Jack scene, but that would be an ecumenical matter
Ecumenical. Yes!
YES!
Drink!
Hmm... Yes, I suppose so.
This man was a legend and always will be.
Kelly created an inspired character in Father Jack. What he added to the written words of the script is pure gold!
What would you say to a cup? “Feck off, cup!”

The pose at 3:16 kills me. It’s the little finger raise that really makes it.
Many classics here, but the best has to be his sarcastic apology to Bishop Len Brennan
Feck off cup! This show has had me rolling on the floor more than any other. Largely thanks to Father Jack!

Hang on, wasn't he?
Frank Kelly was the antithesis of the character - married to a dance teacher for over 50 years, dad of 7, grandfather of 17.
Or at least better than Len Brennan
Thanks for that info.@@pauljordan4452
