I always thought it was appropriate that CLU was in that slightly creepy, dead-eyed uncanny valley. He's not a human. He's a program. He SHOULD look artificial!
Yea, I remember thinking the same thing when I heard how people were complaining of him looking artificial! I was like - He's supposed to look like that - he's a copy!!! And he was a copy created years prior to the events of the movie, so of course he would look slightly dated!
I always thought that all the programs should have had the same facial treatment as Clu. It would have looked appropriate for the setting and it wouldn't have drawn any attention to the look of Clu. I think it would have future proofed the movie a bit.
One of the best modern science fiction movies ever made !!!! I love TRON legacy, the visuals are incredible especially on BluRay, it was awesome in 3D and the Daft Punk score is amazing
IMAX 3D was amazing. RealD 3D was really good too. TRON: Legacy is the first movie I ever went to see more than once in a movie theatre.. and I went 6 times to different theaters to see how it looked in each format. I had high hopes for the film release but by the time I saw it, it had been scratched up and dusty and lacking 3D. I own a few DVDs and BluRay discs, one set being the little Identity Disc with DVDs, BluRay and a BlueRay 3D of Legacy. I’ve watched all but the 3D BluRay since I never got a player and TV that could display it.
Another Fact you missed: } In 2009, at the San Diego Comic Con, during the Hall H Tron Legacy Panel, 4000 People inside the large meeting hall where directed and recording for the shouts "DISC WARS!" "RINZLER", and a crowd stomping in unison, and the crowd laughing (for the scene when Sam tries to use the Light Cycle Baton like a Light Saber) was recorded live inside Hall H and the recorded shouts etc was used in the movie. I was one of those people in Hall H that day.
That’s what they did in lord of the rings. If memory serves me it was for the Uruk-Hai at Isengard. They recorded a stadium full of people in New Zealand.
Former Tronorail pilot here and last one to carry guests before going back to shop and the wrap taken off. A very missed and popular overlay. Pulling into a station was always greeted with many guests cameras out.
Lisberger was 3/4 of the way done with the original TRON and realized it felt nothing like a Disney film so they added the out line of Mickey Mouse in the Solar Sailer/Grid Bug scene as a tie-in. It was the score by Wendy Carlos that solidified it with a Disney feel.
As a kid seeing the first Tron in the theater, I loved it even though I didn't understand the tech jargon. Legacy something felt off. Still enjoyed it.
Tron Uprising was an AMAZING animated series, a MUST watch. Too bad it was cancelled too soon. The late Paul Reubens (yes Pee Wee Herman) did a great job.
Such a good show! Probably one of my favorite animated shows. When I first heard Cyrus speak I thought; holy s*** is that?? & Yeah Paul did a great job. He was an excellent "sleezy character*
I was skeptical of a Tron sequel. The original was so "original" and iconic. It came out just as I was first getting into computers and I was seeing it everywhere. Great visuals with cutting-edge computer graphics, pedestrian story, awesome Wendy Carlos synthesized soundtrack. It was fun! How could they follow this? By updating everything! Tron Legacy was great. I now really like the idea of doing a sequel decades later giving time to think about the possibilities. For me it's a lot like the Blade Runner sequel. But better! Again, the cutting-edge technology, pedestrian story, and awesome Daft Punk electronic soundtrack. It was delightful! For months the soundtrack and the reconfigured CDs were always in my car's CD player.
As a kid i was always disappointed that there was never a classic Tron pinball machine. I think this is a perfect time to do it. Pinball has seen a resurgence with new pinball manufacturers entering the market.
That is so strange. I was literally just on Pinside talking about pinball machines, which I collect. I used to own a Tron Legacy pin. It is a good, and beautiful, pin.
@@ascensionindustries9631 I'm a pinball collector, and your friend's dad doesn't have a $30k Mandalorian machine. The most valuable version of the game is worth about $10k if it has been removed from the box (and only $11k if it hasn't been). Mods placed on a game are worth less than they cost, and there just isn't any way mods can triple the value of a game. Does your friend's dad live in OK?
Tron: Legacy was an AMAZING movie! I LOVED THIS MOVIE! One of the greatest science fiction movies I've ever seen. The soundtrack was a masterpiece! Loved the 1st Tron movie and when I saw Legacy... I was absolutely blown away. I can't wait to see what they do with the 3rd one.

They cheered when they realized we were correct and it was Daft Punk. Solar Sailor from the soundtrack is favorite song on an album I still regularly listen to. Thanks for covering this Minty, your absurd enthusiasm makes the day better.
another awesome video, Minity. Thanks. I am huge TRON fan original (i was 8 or so) to legacy shot in my city on the street where i work (Georgia Street) incidentally same street and corner in deadpool where the big convoy of trucks drive on. Ia super wide street so they like filming there.
Very underrated movie. It just needs one line added: When CLU is blocking them from the exit he asks, “Why?” and Flynn says, “Because he’s my son!” CLU should have said, “So am I!”
It was good the way it was. CLU was bad and didn’t need any sympathy. Would’ve changed how the audience viewed his character. Especially that far into the movie.
I saw this when it first came out in theaters and absolutely loved it. To this day it’s the only movie I’ve seen in 3D that I felt was actually worth seeing in 3D.
The music.. the look.. the story.. the Legacy... unparalleled. Love this movie so much. I've played both the DVD film and CD soundtrack so much I've had to buy them again. I framed the CD cover as one of my favourite soundtracks and had a t-shirt made with the original Tron logo on the front and the Legacy logo on the back. A flawless family flick with heart and stunning visuals. I'm with you, Minty
Yeah, fuck the Acolyte! Knowing how Disney has been, as of late, I say that the new Tron movie will most likely be as disappointing, if not more so, as Clerks 3 was.
Bro I stumbled into a theater playing this movie by chance, and I was so blown away! The sound was turned way up, and I was roughly the same age as the main character in the movie, it just floored me. Everybody needs to see this movie on the big screen at least once, it was made for it, a television set doesn't do it justice. The Daft Punk soundtrack is 50% of the movie.
Just an excellent movie. Saw it in a theater that had a full size Lightcycle on display. 😊 Sound so loud at the beginning when the Recognizer (geek I am) flys overhead. Blown away. Love every frame of this film. Thanks Minty.
Thanks mate. Burnaby is the city in which the studio is located. Also I think I will have to give this one another watch. Cheers bro, keep doing your thing and I will keep tuning in!
Tron legacy was one of the very few films that made me feel like a child again. I was in total awe of it then and I love it now. One of my absolute favourites. Everything is right with this movie. The visuals, the cast, the soundtrack and the story are all just perfect. The plane battle at the end being one of my all time favourite sections of any movie ever. That scene demonstrates exactly why the movie industry was created. Absolutely monumental.
I loved the Tron movie when it came out in 1982. I mastered the Tron arcade game and the Discs of Tron arcade game. I totally loved the Legacy movie. The only thing that bummed me out was when my girlfriends mom, who had already seen it, blurted out the ending as we were leaving to see it.
I agree with you Minty... LEGACY is better than the 1st movie. While I grew up with the original, and always loved it, Legacy is a film I routinely come back to. Visuals are great, ambiance is engrossing, acting is wonderful. Michael Sheen, Beau, Garrett, and Olivia were great casting choices and acted their parts perfectly. Thanks for another great review!
When this movie came out on DVD, I must have watched it hundreds of times, the visuals in this movie were incredible. It had become one of my favorite movies ever along with The Crow and Desperado.
As a lifelong fan of Tron (that was the movie that got me into frisbees as a kid), seeing Tron Legacy at the movies was an immersive experience. Even if the story felt slightly subdued compared to the first Tron, it was still exciting and visually stunning. Plus, I liked Jeff Bridges as Flynn and Clu. Flynn’s maturing as a character felt organic, and bits here and there did feel like an homage to The Dude from The Big Lebowski (“You’re messing with my zen thing, man!”) When it came to DVD and Blu-Ray, I didn’t hesitate to buy the 3-Disc combo pack with the holographic cover. I still have it next to my 20th Anniversary DVD of the first Tron movie.
OK. I've seen about 4 or 5 of your review/analysis videos, and finding each one good, and often better each time. So, Now I have subscribed. Yay! I love Tron, I loved this movie, I really love the soundtrack and I love this video. You included several things that I did not know and different media or aspects that I can now go experience. THANKS! I like your work. You do a great job.
Always have loved this sequel I liked were it took the characters and expansion of the world and good villain you can't deny how good it looks with Morden day Cgi and daft punks soundtrack is killer and the movie was awesome in 3D
Tron was one of the first movies I bought to begin my film collection, back in the days of VHS. Tron: Legacy was the movie that sold me on Blu-Ray, which is now 95% of what I own. The arcade game was awesome and I have fond memories of Tron Intellivision games too.
I took my mom to go see this and about two minutes after Castor was introduced she leans over and said, “This is what you’re gonna do for Halloween isn’t it?” I sure would have but my cosplaying skills weren’t that great sadly.
There's the OST and then there's an 8-bit version of the OST. Both are incredible. And Minty, despite your not being familiar with the technology and your tendency to speak like an Australian, I LOVE your totally unpretentious takes on film
I was working in a movie theatre when this movie was released. Even had a viewing party for the first Tron movie with friends. I even played the ARG game they had, I still have the ENCOM Group Clearance 7 badge I got for it and the lanyard. I was the most hyped for this movie when it came out. It was so worth the bleeding ears for the IMAX 3D and the soundtrack (it was pushing a massive amount of volume and bass). The 3D was well done and not simply just a post conversion. I was so glad I stay for the employee screening test run after hours. I scoured multiple sites and downloads to get the most true complete soundtrack I could, because the single CD plus the R3configur3d album was not the complete score. I decked out the hawking cart with film posters, LED strips and everything I could think of. I was just so hyped for the film. As time passes, this movie ages like fine wine, more folks are realizing how far ahead it was for its time and how undeserving we were when it was released.
I must've have watched TRON a thousand times a a kid..I absolutely loved it! That bit where he drank the water with his Frisbee always made me thirsty haha! Never seen Legacy though.
When TRON came out, I and some friends were programmers at the time and loved the references to terms we used. But we also loved it for the visuals and story. Later, when Tron Legacy came out, I saw it and loved it. The computer generated Flynn worked for me because initially that Flynn may have passed away, but not before creating a version of himself to give him that sense of immortality. What Minty missed was any mention of the TRON Lifecycle ride at WDW Orlando. I have been on it yet, but I watched it being built. Looks cool.
I'm old enough to watch Tron on TV and I loved it! It's like Automan but with bigger budgets. When Tron Legacy was announced, I was super excited and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT!. I love Daft Punk and their MTV so it was a treat to watch the MTV and short film before the movie. I showed it to my kids and they love it too. We would watch it once every few years. Can't watch for Tron 3 and ready to be surprised by Jay Leno.
Both movies STILL are sooooo underestimated. Which is sad because both are awesome! They really bring us that "the future is coming" feeling from the 80s, when everybody were excited and at the same time confused with this "new" thing called computers.
Agreed, I watch the 3D version (extra scene) frequently each year. Tron 1 was beloved as a kid, but you have to be in the mood for vintage sci fi these days to watch it.
I remember seeing this movie in theatres, not having seen the first, and loved it. The aesthetic is amazing and the soundtrack is probably the best movie soundtrack ever made. Sure there's some random fluff in the movie but overall incredible work. Really felt well put together.
Fun fact about the IMAX 3D for those that didn't experience it. I took my family to this and we all thought they projectionists had loaded in the wrong movie because it wasn't in 3D in the beginning when they're in the real world. It doesn't kick in until Sam crosses over to the Grid! I can't think of any other movie that uses 3D like that. Also, the only time I've ever had...well, the best word for it is "geek-gasm" was the end when the carrier is revealed and the lightjets fired up their ribbon trails in the final fight. Both scenes took me be complete surprise and was the perfect way to end the movie.
Hearing that the Pixar team helped with the story makes so much sense. The origin of Pixar is connected to Tron because John Lasseter was inspired by the original movie to get involved with CG animation. And Pixar at the time of Legacy was still at its peak and consisted of the most talented creative team in Hollywood history
Some of the best mix of cgi with practical effects I’ve seen from any movie in the last 30 years……The sets, costumes, cgi, and sound design are nothing short of stunning….😮. Not to mention the Daft Punk soundtrack is by far one of the best of all time…..Excellent movie and break down by Minty….C-Ya
I have to agree with your assessment of the two movies. I saw Tron in the cinema here in the UK as a kid and was electrified by it. But Tron Legacy is a superior movie by far.
One of the best scenes in cinema with awesome music is the scene where Garrett is running in slow motion before jumping onto the lightcycle. Absolutely cinema quality.
It's a criminally underrated film. One of the best looking films of the century so far, from a production design standpoint. One of the best soundtracks/scores put to film. It has a great story. I think people were just expecting Inception or something overly cerebral, and I think the idea of the Grid IS cerebral, but most don't think of it that way. I think the Grid being a digital world was lost on a lot of critics who either didn't watch the original Tron or just didn't understand what happened to Kevin, and then Sam, when they were transported to the Grid. I think it will attain an eventual appreciation and the cult following is deserved. Some of us just got it when it came out.
yea seriously.. I even mentioned demolition man pinball from when you did that film. a LOT of popular movies get turned into pinball machines. Tron Legacy is one of the most sought after titles.
Tron Legacy is a very underrated movie. Great intro rendition of the Disney castle with the laser lights. Very cool. Would love to see it on the big screen again.
back when 3D was all the rage, I would watch a lot of 3D movies. The only 2 that are even worth mentioning to this date are Avatar and Tron:Legacy. I remember perfectly sitting in the cinema during act 1 wondering "did I bring the wrong glasses? where's the 3D?!" and as soon as Sam stepped into the grid, the 3D started and I was blown away. Tron and Avatar did something great, they used good 3D that enhanced each scene where it was used. Not like 99% of all the other 3D shite that abused and malused 3D during their whole movie.
As an old man, nothing will take the place of OG TRON in my heart. But I loved Legacy- and I am excited about Ares. As for Leto. it is like 30 Seconds to Mars albums. Definitely hit or miss.
My favorite Tron Legacy promotion was at Disneyland. They had elecTRONica in the Hollywood back lot section of California Adventure. It was a nightly rave where the DJ, bar tenders and gogo dancers were dressed as programs. The concept was that the guests were sent to the Grid by Zuse to party. As part of it, they had Flynn's Arcade, which was an 80's style arcade. It was so popular, Disney kept it running for 2 years after the movie came out.
Legacy was AWESOME! There were some parallels of the story in my own life, regarding my father, who needed help. He got that help, and I saw this movie with him. It makes me think of him still after his passing in 2019.
I've found for when you're unsure of a movie (such as Tron 3), It's best to go in with low expectations. That way, if it's not so good, you're prepared. And if it's good, you're happily surprised.
I met Cindy Morgan at a show about a year after Tron Legacy came out. At the time most people were disappointed in it. I asked Cindy if she'd even been asked about her availability to be in it and she said no one ever contacted her. Sounded like the producers had no intention at all of using the Laura/Yori characters. I remember there being a vague reference to Laura being Sam's mother and that she'd died a few years earlier, but that was all.
It's not just you *Dave* , I think a lot of us loved the movie. I especially went mental over the Nokia product placement 🤣👌 And "Sweet Dreams" was bangin in that Arcade!
Hey Minty I just found an IMDB page for Minty Comedic Arts and left a 10⭐ rating and always a thumbs 👍🏻 up here on UA-cam as always keep up the great work 🤙🏼
I always thought it was appropriate that CLU was in that slightly creepy, dead-eyed uncanny valley. He's not a human. He's a program. He SHOULD look artificial!
Yeah, that's my feeling too. As the movie shows, he's kind of a flawed copy of Flynn, so it tracks that he doesn't _quite_ look right too.
The problem was that de-aged Flynn had the same look.
Good point, besides that learning that they were two different actors to make CLU wow, I had no clue!
Yea, I remember thinking the same thing when I heard how people were complaining of him looking artificial! I was like - He's supposed to look like that - he's a copy!!! And he was a copy created years prior to the events of the movie, so of course he would look slightly dated!

Such a shame there isn't a 4K disc for Tron Legacy. I'd buy it instantly. But the blu-ray is quite good, I will give it that.
4k?
I just hope Disney doesn't SHlT all over it like they have with Indiana Jones and Star Wars.

Disney would kill for that Rotten Tomatoes score these days 😂😂😂 14% anyone 😂😂😂
And with "movie critics" reviews on the Acolyte being at 82%, it really makes you wonder who these "critics" are.

Give it a try!!!!😊
@@hitmanmonaghan6633 shoot… it’s been so long now I don’t think anyone remembers the character 🤣
@@Clownboy15 you never know!
I use this movie as proof that Green Lantern had NO EXCUSE to CGI his suit
I liked the green lantern lol
Green Lantern had NO EXCUSE. End of line.
Honestly, I think Green Lantern's excuse is that Ryan Reynolds can use it as a punch-line.
I love Legacy. The father son aspect was a really good base for the movie too.
Tron did get its own roller coaster too. Personally wished it was longer, but hey I can ride a light cycle.
There's the OST and then there's an 8-bit version of the OST. Both are incredible.
And Minty, despite your not being familiar with the technology and your tendency to speak like an Australian, I LOVE your totally unpretentious takes on film
I loved both movies. The acting made the digital seem real. And the light cycles make me so happy.
Great video! I'm a big Tron fan as well and it was really fun to hear all the backstory and inside information. Thanks for putting this out.
Saw this movie in IMAX 3D and D-Box. Truly amazing film.
"Greetings Programs!"
I waited for this movie forever. It has some great elements and some not so great ones.
13:17 you forgot the actual tron Rollercoaster. In Japan and florida..
I must've have watched TRON a thousand times a a kid..I absolutely loved it! That bit where he drank the water with his Frisbee always made me thirsty haha! Never seen Legacy though.
“Bit” nice little pun. Cause Bit was the digital polyhedral shape in the first Tron movie.
Wtf? Are you a communist? You go watch Legacy right now or you won't be allowed to play with your friends,😤
Awesome! I always love seeing your show. I really like Tron Legacy alot. Thank you for rekindling this one, now i got to start watching it again!
Saw this a few times in the theater and I was amazed by the style of the film and the music of it . I actually saw it twice in one day .
Loved the original and I thoroughly enjoyed Tron Legacy! Great film!
There's nothing on earth like a genuine, Tron-a-fied, electrified, six car monorail!
Thanks Minty! Such an under appreciated film as everything is faithful to the original: storyline, soundtrack, visuals (especially in 3D)👍👍👍
You just made me want to go rewatch Legacy.
Loved Tron Legacy. Tron Uprising was amazing and should get a revival/continuation.
I have to agree with your assessment of the two movies.
I saw Tron in the cinema here in the UK as a kid and was electrified by it.
But Tron Legacy is a superior movie by far.
I honestly wouldn't mind if OG Tron got remastered so the world looks more inline with Legacy
I forgot who I was watching.
Good thing that there's a light bar behind you announcing your show😂
Keep up the good work
One of the best scenes in cinema with awesome music is the scene where Garrett is running in slow motion before jumping onto the lightcycle.
You never seem to mention the pinball machines... Tron Pinball is amazing to play
yea seriously..
Daft Punk's score alone is worth the price of admission
Closing in on 500k Minty , congrats.
I remember there being a vague reference to Laura being Sam's mother and that she'd died a few years earlier, but that was all.
great review and these were in fact 10 things i didn't know :)
I really loved this movie in the theatres, seeing it in 3D on the big screen. Really amazing & in the Dolby surround sound.
