    Jamie, I dont know you personally obviously, I've only listened to you talk and share about your life and mental health. I'm really happy for you that you have found a way of being that is free of all anxiety, anger, depression etc. I respect you for wanting to share that, but as you said, people aren't very receptive.
    It's normal for humans to navigate the world by forming a sense of self, aka "me". Are you familiar with the mirror test? It's a phenomenon where humans and some other intelligent species are able to recognize their own reflection. That is evidence of having a sense of self, of looking at the image in the mirror and thinking "oh that's me, that's my face I'm looking at". I believe it was wirh the dolphin mirror test, the researchers marked one side of their cheek, and when they saw themselves in the mirror, the knew to rub their own cheek.
    Having a sense of self seems to be a very natural and instinctual way for humans to navigate life. As you said, if you have a sense of self, it gives you a reason to be angry, fearful, sad. If you eliminate your sense of self, there is no longer a reason to feel anything.
    The reason we fear, the reason we get angry, is that we are protecting "me". If something is insulting "me", it's instinctual to recognize these verbal attacks and be defensive and even angry about it. When bad things happen to "me", that's a reason to be sad and maybe even be motivated to do something that would inprove "me's" circumstance. Having a sense of "me"-someone to protect, someone to encourage, someone to believe in, that is the engine at the center of a human being.
    The way you somehow removed that and are still able to function is weird actually. I guess there is something else giving you meaning and reason to live.
    Your method works but is very counter intuitive.
    If spreading this message is what you want, I hope you succeed. Perhaps it will catch on and help a lot of people have perfect mental health.
    Not sure if you're saying this approach can address serious mental illness like clinical depression, PTSD, bipolar mood disorder, schizophrenia etc. Maybe you mean this approach can help people without diagnosable levels of mental health problems.

    • @kristopherwilson506
      @kristopherwilson506 15 годин тому +1

      I think you hit the nail on the head. Most people don't want to think about not having "me" because it eliminates their reason for existing. I'd be curious to see Jamie's 'why' for existing every day. I can't necessarily agree with humans having a "default state of happiness" and that we can make that state a near-permanent one, but I'd be interested to hear the argument/proof from top to bottom before I write it off.

    You're describing dissociation which takes all the fun out of life. You can't take away all negative emotions / anxiety (i.e. "perfect mental health") without also taking away happiness. Hopefully you address this when you flesh it out in a podcast.

    • @jamieschannel4034
      @jamieschannel4034  21 годину тому +14

      This is not what I'm describing at all. I'm fundamentally saying that your default state is happiness and wellbeing, and that can be nearly permanently experienced unless you've accidentally harmed others. I hope I can address it further on the channel.

      @@jamieschannel4034 "your default state is happiness and wellbeing" I find this hard to believe. Why then would babies still cry and toddlers act up from the moment they are born (and before they have "accidentally harmed others"). Idk how "accidentally harming others" is the source of the human nature of self-servingness that leads to greed, anger, jealousy, and other negative emotions.

    • @jamieschannel4034
      @jamieschannel4034  20 годин тому +2

      @@sandygehrmann6309 Sure, crying isn't at all an emotion, it is a form of communication, although for most of us they are linked together and not noticed to be separate. If you are saying "..the human nature of self-servingness that leads to greed, anger, jealousy, and other negative emotions" then I would fundamentally say that this human nature is a complete mischaracterization and your own point of view.
      I'll leave it there, and if you're interested you can listen in to the other channel - challenge anything I say there if you'd like and I'm happy to respond. I understand what you're trying to suggest and all that I can say is that I'm not trying to encourage any sort of nihilism or dissociation, but a completely different thing.

    You know, my biggest “issue” with the whole “you’re not a self” idea is my own fear that it will take away a part or all of who I am.
    Like, yes my anxiety, anger, sadness, etc are not fun to deal with, but it’s ironically part of who I perceive myself to be. And the idea of being a different from that is kinda scary ngl.
    But it has always been something I’ve been intrigued with. I think I never got into it, because as you’ve mentioned, it’s usually tied with organized religion or spirituality of some kind that threw me off. But maybe your way of explaining it will penetrate my head. We shall see! Good luck!

    I occasionally have nightmares despite moving past perceiving the world through the seperate construction that is the perceived self, negative emotions can still exist within me despite understanding what I am and accepting the self for what I've found it to be, largely through meditation and lately put into words by Buddhist teachings.
    Much of the things you describe line up with those concepts, and I do believe there are universal truths about the act of being conscious which can be found within and bring peace to the mind. Part of this is the fact that anyone can do so through compassionate exploration of ones own mind. I do not agree with your framing of the separation from the ego as the end all be all, and perhaps our definitions differ but I do not think happiness is this default state. Though a true default state is certainly serene, I experience it as just that, where as happiness is a kind visitor which inhabits the mind on the condition that it must leave again, and so is fear, such as the fear of harm towards a loved one, or the sorrow of betrayed trust. The mind is a lake, and emotions may rain into it and cause ripples but at it's most pure and "default" it still, like a blank mirror reflecting the sky. I think what you describe are part of a toolset to be in control of a satisfactory and meaningful life, but not as all encompassing as you present it, and certainly not switch that enables permanent happiness.

    I have a lot of respect for you... But saying you can achieve perfect mental health shows a great deal of ignorance about mental health. @kristopherwilson506 15 годин тому

      @@damianescobedo4143 To answer the second question: anxiety used to be fundamental to living (and still is, but its role has changed). It served as our fight or flight response, allowed us to have caution and awareness for potential threats, and allowed us to exercise vigilance which allowed us to survive a super harsh and super dangerous world where we were more often prey than predator (the majority of the human race doesn't have to worry about getting eaten by animals, starvation, dehydration, freezing to death, etc.).
      That said, in the past, anxiety was all about survival. Now, it's less about survival--it's still important to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings--and more about motivation and performance. _Acute_ anxiety, acute stress, has shown time and time again to be a powerfully positive tool. It is this prolonged state of heightened anxiety that is when things can go south. It's as if your fight-or-flight response is on all the time. That's not good for you.

    Honestly I think you’ll be hamstrung by your dismissiveness towards “spirituality” and your view of this as “perfect”, as at least when it comes to the Buddhist/hindu traditions there’s so much more there w.r.t how the mind can operate than just the detachment from the ego that you’ve rediscovered here.
    You might view it as all woo woo nonsense right now, but it only seems that way when you don’t understand the phenomenon they’re explaining, similar to how many would be confused trying to understand the “perfect” mental state you describe if they haven’t experienced anything even adjacent to it before.
    There are thousands of years of deeper self inquiry than we could ever understand behind these traditions, and some humility is needed to go the distance here. Literally everything you describe has already been described in Vedic traditions, and that’s just the beginning
