If there is a heaven I'd like to think that concerts like this happen every day.
The two most soulful, tortured voices in the building that winters night left us with four minutes of pure magic!
Could not of said it any better. God I miss Mr. Manuel. Stratford's Ontarios original and definitely greatest export.
Not to be a nit but it was Autumn, as the concert occurred on Thanksiving day , complete with full Thanksgiving dinner being served to the audience.
What a soulful voice Richard had
His performance shattered all my previous standards of value. This short performance told me everything I needed to know about what truly powerful music is, what real soul music is.
Dr. John said in an interview that at this point, the other performers had gathered to the side of the stage and some of them were in tears, and I was no different!
I've heard this rendition a thousand times or more yet it still stands as an astounding vocal performance from two of the greats. Whatever the DNA was that allowed such great artists to floursh in the past has sadly truly gone forever. But maybe someone, some day, will find it in themselves to exlpore and be inspired perform such as this ...
Ahhh we can only dream
What a Heavenly duet! Morrisson and Manuel/Manuel and Morrisson: Amazing!
MORE PEOPLE HAVE TO HEAR THIS
My lullaby to my babies long time Im68
My favorite track from “The Last Waltz”
It's amazing to think, all being well, that people will be able to look back at this in a thousand years time.
Some of the best tunes ever!
Knowing this performance has thrown a wrench in my life plan.
When I first saw this video 10 years ago, I thought I would have no regrets if I died now.
Reminds me of first time I saw Van live. This grumpy little guy comes out on stage, who looks like he just woke up from his afternoon nap, and perhaps 20-minutes too early. Then - BOOM! - this big voice comes out of him.
One of the greatest musical performances I ever attended
Lucky you…☝️😁 Your beard bears testament to that claim❕😎🌵
van will always be the man, but richard manuel's voice is the one we will hear when we get to heaven.
This comment made me weep like a small child because I can only hope it is true.
the truth
I don't believe in heaven but I know Richard Manuel had the voice of an angel
If they’re good enough to sing on earth why wouldn’t they continue elsewhere, anyway the man is just biding his time before he goes on his endless mystic moon dance
If I don't hear Van's voice in heaven I'm not going.
Best moment of the night, bar none. Y'all should've been there.
As if you were there! You lucky man...
I still had about 19 years before birth.. otherwise would've loved to be there.
The best version of "Tura,, Lura, Lura", except for my Dad's! Happy St. Patrick's Day!
I can see that there wasn't room for this in The Last Waltz (you couldn't sacrifice "Caravan") but the look of sheer delight on Rick Danko's face at simple zaniness of this really would have been great to see in the Final Cut.
Heaven!!!
Beautiful beyond words. So blessed this is on film. Love it. ❤️🙏🎶
OMG beautiful!
unbelievable just unreal Van the Man
No words- just wow!
Tura Lura Lovely.......
Richard resterai sempre nel mio cuore rip
it's the forgotten things that bring you back home. exquisite performance
I don't know if anybody else will "get" this or agree, but it's such a San Francisco moment. Winterland back then
Yes!
EVERY TIME I have an extra glass of wine at home, I listen to this song. I love Van the Man. But I listen because of Richard Manuel. I read that the camera ran out of film during The Last Waltz. Not sure I believe that. If you like this rendition of this song, look for more Richard Manuel.
i was convinced FOR YEARS that ray charles was making a cameo appearance, before i suddenly had a light bulb moment and realized it was richard manuel, more's the pity to him.
According to Robbie in his autobiography, Testimony, Martin Scorsese and the film crew knew that the Panavision 35 mm cameras had to be reloaded. They had to make choices in advance on when to reload the cameras. I don't know if it went exactly according to plan. Of course, there were multiple cameras, too.
Wow he does ray charles so well
@@xxjergerxx Exactly!
I love Van Morrison but Richard is "The Man" here.
Gail Halldorson You ain’t wrong..
Idk.. Van was fantastic in this song, but great song either way
Well I think they made a perfect vocal team. I do however think Richard did the start like no other singer could
Perfect! Bravo!
RICHARD. MANUEL.
What a voice.
Van's good too.
LMAO
Van Morrison è maestoso!!!
Van channels Louis Armstrong’s marvelous scat singing. Highlight of a magical performance. When The Last Waltz movie was in the theaters, I musta gone to see it 4-5 times. I still love it, and this tune and Caravan are stupendous.
Ray Donovan, always with the tunes.
I agree totally
Pure magic
It is fantastic
Lord have mercy! Happy St. Patrick's Day 2016
Spectacular
Damn I have heard this loads of times audio but never film and I swear it was Ray singing with Van like in one of those guest band things . I was fooled completely and I am a huge Ray fan and a proff musician ,just goes to show!!
Just love this version....especially today, on St. Patrick's Day!
Irish soul man
Hiya kid ! Van shouts to Richard just before the start ... True friendship !
Why in the F'in hell did Marty Scorsese cut this from The Last Waltz?
We wuz robbed!
Scorsese's main purpose was to keep the camera on his pal Robertson and make the whole thing about him. We hardly ever get a clear shot of Richard Manuel, who is marginalized in the movie.
they were probably restocking the camera with film, getting ready for van's caravan. its not like Scorsese wanted to cut some songs, but he physically couldn't film it all
The concert itself was over 4 hours, there were a lot of great songs cut.
At one point Scorsese lost all but one of the motors to the five (?) different cameras running!! LUCKILY (?) one camera was running when he was able to capture Muddy Waters's appearance!! He surely captured a true moment in (Rock/Blues) music history!!
Agreed, Steve. This one (at least) should have been included in the Director's Cut edition. Classic example of what Van can do with an ordinary song. Did same later with "Send In The Clowns"; made it a Blues standard.
I ♥this long.
Heavenly
Que cancion tan Bonita y esa voz de Van Morrison increible -
Long live Van the Man. Agreed this should have been prominently featured in the film. The better audio recordings of the track reveal an audience hanging on his every inflection. No white man has ever sung like Van Morrison.
the truth
Maybe Richard Manuel
Their (Manuel,Morrison) template was Ray Charles.
@@TheBnatural44 As Ray was for Joe Cocker too. Joe, Richard, & Van are a few of the best ever and Ray is the common thread.
that may be true...but don't forget Gregg Allman.
this one goes out to my favorite this ones for you babes.... Euan Watson no one ever sang it like you did!!! I still see you head thrown back singing your heart out! You made my day! 💯❤️❤️❤️🦅
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Amazing.
Wow! Thnak you for this. Soulful is an understatement.
Love Van the Man, people. But--just listen--Richard Manuel's intro. Can't beat it.
Does sound a bit like Ray Charles, don't it?
demartinoaleable I think Richard and Van both sound like Ray in their own ways if that makes sense
have mercy!
You can hear some nice piano flourishes from John Simon near the end, and how about Howard Johnson's tuba draggin' that bottom? They don't come across as clearly on the official mix.
Why wasn't this in the movie? It is wonderful!
Perhaps because Richard set the bar so high with his first note and then upstaged Van with his soaring vocals. Just notice how Van turns to Rick and Robbie but ignores Richard when the song ends.
Richard Manuel is the man here. .
❤️
¡Buenisimo!
the belfast cowboy
Not just his great vocals, listen to Richard play piano on this..
Richard does not play piano on this one. I believe it's John Simon.
Richard Manuel kicks ass on this version!
St. Patrick's Day 2019!
"Sing it to me now"
Should have cut Neil Diamond for this.
That’s a thought! 🤔
Should have been in the movie!!! Bing was the greatest
Why is Irish soul not a Grammy catagory?
Because Van would win it every year
i'm wondering who is singing the background at the end of the song like singing " ouuuh ouhhh wouhouuu " around 3.32 with a very high tone
Rick Danko I think
Richard manuel sembra Ray charles.
1:43
D I V I N E !!!
So agree
The biggest mistake Scorsese made in his entire career was not filming this for the movie
In case you didn’t know
why is this in B&W?
It's raw footage, the song was not used in the film
The drunkenness in Manuel's voice, real or not, carries over into the backing vocals. All in counterpoint to Van's soaring solo.
Then Van went on to sing the second best performance of the whole night (we all know who #1 is).
I wish they'd done "Belfast Cowboy," too.
Ah yes!☝️#1…the HAWK❕👏🤠
Van had 7 sausage rolls after this....and 2 custard buns.
Van is great. Richard is incredible. Did he get any appreciation for that? Not that I know of. No wonder he killed himself.
what about lead singer, first-one-i-mean for doubbie-brother,s, voice sounds the same or not far off -----
It's The Band keyboardist Richard Manuel, channeling some serious Ray Charles
This has to be one of Van’s weakest, poorest and rotten songs and it does him no favours especially when he and the Band absolutely knock ‘ Caravan ‘ out of the park
MAYBE...Irish babies heard drunks screaming this crapola
over their cribs? The REAL version is by Bing Crosby. Lovely!
Not like my Grandparents. Better!
Dislike
You're weird!
No words for how BAD this is.....
Weirdo
Happy St. Patricks Day !
