Eight years before this concert I stumbled into this band playing a high school gym in Guelph, Ontario. Tix were two bucks Long story - but I ended up being a roadie that summer - 18 gigs - when they were next to nobody And. Could those guys play!
Wow, this really shows just how much they overdubbed. That is NOT the same solo Robbie played on the Last Waltz. The clarinet sounds freakin incredible. They shoulda just let him take it away.
Thats what I thought! But its just the first half of the solo cut out. if you listen to the whole solo at 1:41 to 2:17 you can hear the solo in the movie at 2:02. Still suprising that they did that because of the amount of technical work needed to do that. These were the days of magnetic tape.
I hear the solo from the last waltz, plus more. There were a lot of overdubbs with the horns and everything, but still it sounds great. These guys were real musicians musicians.
hammer44head depending on which version you’ve watched, many times videos on UA-cam are slightly sped up (and usually about a half step higher) and this is typically done so the video won’t be deleted due to copyright troubles.
Robbie knows he's on camera so he keeps turning to give out vocal directions no one (including the band) can hear. Of course, he's back to miming when he's on the mic.
tolanstout ..so true. Funny thing he did have a distinctive voice but could only pull it off in studio... his solo album is an example. From all the footage on the band..Once or twice I managed to separate his voice.. barely creep through trying to sing the chorus. Even his guitar playing can lack some flow and is weak at times.. But he was genius songwriter...
Now im not a musician but I have a musician's ear,if I may. watch Robbie take over the 1st break from the Dixieland players and THEN! conduct them to ge tback in line. Any doubt how perfect Robbie was LIVE ,should be erased if you can believe your eyes and ears. it is a shame he quir>
That was the fastest request taken I've ever heard of my life.
The passion Levon showed was mesmerizing
Robbie's terrific solo takes on another dimension when you can clearly see and hear that he's dueling with the clarinetist!
Possibly my favorite song by The Band.
levon was the only member to not overdub a single note on the entire last waltz
Heard that too. Amazing!

oh you can bet he is! RIP levon and Thank you!
Magicians !
Love this. As a horn guy, I noticed the
horn parts that were faded out for the album production.
Great great music Gold 💕
The Band, most underrated rock band
No, they're not.
jeez, it's times like this that make me wish I could turn back the clock

Are you guys sure this is the same performance? This sounds a little slower in tempo than the LAst Waltz version. It may be a different performance.

great !!!!! thanx.
Awesome. Robbie and Levon were the engines in this band. Sorta Klemzer.
"OPHELIA!" "Y'got it. One, two, three, four--"
❤
C'mon back!!
That Clarinet - where the heck did that goto in the last waltz?!?! Needs more Clarinet :D
Partly cutting down the run time, party Robbie's ego.
Yesss!!!!!
Levon!

@@ziapsp4167 they were do for a break by the time of the last waltz
Either miming or his mic is off. Guy couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. Great songwriter and guitarist, but a phoney as a singer.
That bass
They both lucked out when Robbie got to write little movies for Levon.
Sounds great but last waltz footage is SO MUCH BETTER
