    "Sing oh Goddes, of the rage of Achilles, that which bought countless devastations upon the Achaeans"
    If you've not read the Iliad before, here's a history lesson for you:
    - Achilles was the single most destructive force on the battlefields of Troy and that includes the God of War, Ares, who was fighting alongside the Trojans.
    - The movie portrays the fight between Hector and Achilles as somewhat evenly matched. It wasn't. Achilles kills Hector in a single blow. The very sight of Achilles caused Hector to flee in utter fear and panic. Hector, up to this point, has been shown to be able to fight toe-to-toe with the undisputed second greatest fighter of the Greeks, Greater Ajax.
    - After Patroclus' death and upon his return to the battlefield, it's heavily implied Achilles single-handedly drives back the entire Trojan army (depending on the translation you read). He kills so many men a nearby river is dammed up and flows blood instead of water, causing the river god to attack Achilles in self-preservation.
    - His rage is so consuming that almighty Zeus himself is concerned that he, Achilles, will break fate itself.
    - There is zero mention of his invulnerability in the original poem. It's fact that Achilles is obsessed with his own mortality and this is a massive influence in his decision-making process throughout the poem. Wouldn't make sense if he knew himself to be invulnerable. So his slaughter of the Trojans is committed with Achilles having all the failures of a mortal body.
    And he does all this within a book or two out of 24. Whether there's a historical basis for him or not is debateable but you can't argue he's the most legendary warrior in human history.

    Achilles was the most noble and enlightened among the Greeks. He possessed the wit necessary to realise how short and pointless life really is. That is why his war was not about wealth & spoils. It was a kind of personal war within him. He was the most fierce but at the same time the most humane and thoughtfull warlord. That is why Agamemnon was not his king.

    • @flightevolution8132
      @flightevolution8132 3 роки тому +3

      None of that is correct. He was absolutely NOT the most enlightened Greek - the reason he fought for fame and honor was because he was born to fight, and fight better than anyone else. Additionally, he knew he was fated to die so of course he knew how short life was. And he absolutely was not a humane warlord. I don't know what could have possibly given you that idea.

      To answer to all of you because there's some serious misinformation going on here, Troy was a real city, it has existed and it has been conquered. Troy, nonetheless was a GREEK city. Need I remind you that greece wasn't a nation like we know it to be nowadays. It had city-nations but they all felt "greek". In fact, everyone else was mentioned as barbarian.
      No, Helen was not the reason of the war. The reason was that Troy was rich in wheat and they needed it.
      So in conclusion. There was a city named troy located there. There was a war. The reason wasn't a woman. HOWEVER. it's not sure whether Achilles actually existed. If he did, it must have been the greatest warrior of the army (obviously not a demi god), if he didnt, he was either a fictional character (since he's only mentioned by Homer) OR he embodies the entire greek force that was so great. This is yet unknown. The same goes for Odysseus.
      Now, somebody said something about why it was called Iliad. Well, Ilion was the greek name for Troy. In greek it had two names, both troy and ilion. That is correct. What is not correct is the "-iad" in the end that someone said it shows you what it's talking about. That's as wrong as it gets. The greek title was "Iliada". The "ili" part comes from the word Ilion whereas the "ada" part comes from the ancient greek verb "ado" which means "I sing" (hence iliad is a POEM, they used to sing them). I think I've answered to all of you

    As a soldier of 44 years these word be true to all my brothers and sisters In arms form the past, the present, and for the future. Only we the soldier's may truly know the true essence of freedom, of life, and of love, for many of those soldiers who are not here at this moment in time with us, gave their all. They gave thier life for freedom, for the love of their brothers and sisters In arms, for their country, for their be loved ones to have freedom for this day. Let no one forget their ever induring hardships , their physical and emotional pain, their lonelyness, and final sacrifice. They gave their sacred life's for those who will never truly know the true meaning of freedom, love of country, love of a family who will never hold them again.

    Definitely a great movie, and also not a bad historical depiction of ancient Greece and there neighbor Troy, many might consider this to be nothing but a complete work of fiction, told by an old Greek story teller, but this is not truly fiction, and it's historical significance is more important now than ever, I do appreciate this Omage to Achilles, I have always looked up to him, and as a Soldier in the Army, a warrior myself I have always and continue to be ever improving and keep my progress going, warriors like Achilles will always be my motivation.

The myth is, his mother dipped him in a fountain of immortality, but while doing that she held him by his foot so his leg didn't completely touch the water, making the back of his foot a weakspot. Once he was hit in that spot, he lost his god-like powers and became a mortal, soon after which he died. He was so good, that people legitimately believed he is immortal.
