a twitch software engineer came to my high school class to talk about future job opportunities once. his opener was "alright, do we have any gaaaameeeers in the room?! whoooo likes fooooortniiiite!!! how about... league of legeeeeends!!! well, guess what, i work... at twitch!!!" the guy was older than my parents and the screenshot of twitch in his powerpoint was in light mode from the desktop app no one uses. when we asked him what he did he said "good question! uhh" and danced around it for a couple minutes before basically saying he fixes bugs lmao

I cannot stress enough how many times I've opened up a stream out of curiosity and immediately closed it because of that unskippable ad. That 30 second ad is an insane deterrent from hopping around from stream to stream and checking out smaller less famous streams. Just one more Twitch policy that absolutely strangles the discoverability of small creators.
Best part is, I'm subbed and the streamer has ads turned off, I still get an ad on reloading the page because it buffers for no reason
Yeah, and when you finally watch it they aren’t doing anything.
Watching replays are absolutely worst. Watch an ad to get into the video, want to skip to a certain part? ANOTHER AD, it’s so stupid. 4 Minutes of ads!
theres no reason for the ad to be right at the beginning too. do it like 30 seconds in and it would be fine
@@BobOrKlaus just use a good adblock, twitch really hates its users it deserves nothing of the money.

Removing the ad free experience from prime is what turned me from a rabid stream hopper into just an occasionally stream viewer, and slowly drew me away from the site. Thank you Twitch for helping put my life in a better place! Now, instead of mindlessly wasting away on their site or watching streams on my phone I can actually do real things with my life - it’s so heart warming that Twitch has the best interests of their viewers in mind!!! 🎉🎉🎉

The biggest problem with Ads on Twitch isn't the length or intrusiveness, some youtube ads have that. The problem with that is the live nature of the platform. The longer the ad the more of the stream you miss. If your watching it live your likely not wanting to miss anything.
bro in tournaments youll get an ad LITERALLY last 1 min of fights and miss everything. Its so sick, i cant be subbed to every single channel i would like due to money. But if theres big events going or something, why is there an AD on the most important parts of the game. So sad, Ive drastically reduced my twitch watching, and if i do watch its to the few people Im subbed too. Which other content creators get hurt by, because no one wants to wander to intrusive ads.
Creators on UA-cam have control over ad durations~ we can disable the ability to skip after 5 seconds but nobody does it because viewership plummets.
@Top Kek Respectfully, what on earth are you on? YT has a lot of ads
@Top Kek I also use an ad blocker, but whenever I'm watching something from, say, a friend's laptop or on a teacher's projector, there's usually ads there - not to mention the cancerous 'double ad' combo where two ads play on top of each other, I think they introduced that a year or so ago
@@sadness_doctor572 Going from a 5 second ad or an ad you can skip in 5 seconds to an unskippable 15 or 30 second ad is one of the most cancerous things that can happen on YT I swear to god.
The only thing I hate about ads on twitch is because you miss the content on UA-cam you basically pause the video but even on streams on UA-cam you can go back to when the ad started and just watch in 2x speed to see what you missed
Exactly im fine with ads on youtuve because it doesnt make you miss anything AND its FREE they pay millions of creators and need to get money somehow plus they are really short twitch runs like minute sometimes + of ads and at that point i just click off
Love watching on 2x speed to catch up feels like I’m getting my times worth tuning in
Yep. I wish you could rewind on twitch mobile.
Some streams will occasionally have a small box where you can see the stream when the ad runs but, you still miss a lot, can’t rewind, and often there are like 7 (!!) 30 second ads!
Even on the mobile app. Being able to pause, and then catching up on the streams with 2x is the best feature.
A German 24/7 Live stream on UA-cam (RockedBeansTV) makes Ad breaks, just like a normal TV channel.
Crazy how twitch seems to make every single user experience worse with each decision they make
I actually love missing 3 minutes of a stream during usually the most tense moment when 6 30s ads get run.
@@peterpumpkin1 yeah when they implemented the 6-8 30 second ads every 30 minutes, I started only watching twitch on desktop with ad blocker. Watching twitch on mobile is such a garbage experience now.

@@peterpumpkin1 dud i dont have any addblocker and i only watch ads when i click on stream and they give the ad, then i dont see any other ads. and sometimes i see on chat of streamers people complain about ads but i never see any ads.
I'm so used to UA-cam Vanced + Brave at this point that the few times I check out twitch it's like a culture shock
how people sit through that many ad is beyond me :O
The reason ads don't affect retention on UA-cam is because the platform is designed to make the viewers come to the content they want to watch. If a viewer gets curious from the thumbnail and title, they click the video (increasing impressions) and likewise if they like the intro, style or narrative set by the content creator, then they will be willing to sit through the entire video irrespective of ads (increasing retention).
On Twitch, the content creators call the viewers to them. They start a stream and try to keep viewers engaged. Before joining a stream, a viewer usually doesn't know if they'll enjoy it as much as other streams, how long the stream will be or how often the content being shown in the stream will change. Unlike UA-cam videos where the viewer knows exactly what they signed up for, on Twitch viewers watch as long as they like what they see. As such, ads cause a much more drastic impact to stream retention.
It's less to do with the culture and more to do with the type of content offered.
It's also to do with the fact many people have add blockers and don't see the adds anyway lmao
Also adblock
@@zapflash270 many, sure, but not the majority. In 2019, 70% of watch time on UA-cam came in through mobile devices. Sure, lots of those are probably kids on iPads or people having something run in the background for hours on their phones like podcasts, but I can't imagine that number having gone down at all.
So 65% of people watching UA-cam, give or take 5%, get ads unless they pay for premium.
@@darkfiire1647 also imagine watching a whole video of someone talking about problems with ads on a certain platform and the only thing you have to say to add to the conversation is "yeah but I'm cool, I don't get ads because I use as block"

Not sure if this is from the streamers end, but I was getting like 3-5min worth of ads unskippable throughout 3 different streams I clicked on before returning to UA-cam. It's been a while since watching Twitch so it was definitely a unbelievably annoying experience.
If UA-cam just makes their chat way more fun like Twitch's and gets a dedicated streaming section more like Twitch's, they'd absolutely dominate overnight.
i want nothing more than for this to happen
The hard part is a lot of the important emotes like 'pog' and whatnot are likely copyright owned by twitch, meaning there is going to be a natural struggle of trying to make an equivalent on youtube.
@@lurac5710 thats only twitch global emotes; shit form bttv would be free game, and i think actually already works on yt. i think the biggest difference chat wise between yt & twitch is message delay & theatre mode. twitch has the ui down.
I'm hoping back and forth and those reasons are the ONLY reason i keep going back too twitch (because i have a few subs/follows and I'm monetized there not here yet), I hate losing my vods, my videos aren't able too be processed most times in higher than 4500kb UA-cam both those issues are gone (but it is absolutely an afterthought on UA-cam unfortunately)
youtube is absolutely fumbling the bag with streaming
you're absolutely right about the ad thing, i'll open twitch to see what one of the streamers i watch is doing and immediately get met with a minute or more of ads no matter where i go - at that point it's much easier to just close the site and go watch a youtube video
I haven’t watch live streams since I started college but I finally got some time on my hands, got on twitch and left after like 5 mins because it was an insane amount of ads. I’m just gonna keep watching vods and clips now :/
adblock?
@@guildwarsnerd123 I was on my phone was never so down bad to get Adblock on it lol
Was watching Miz earlier got 3 ads when I clicked on his stream, watched him for like 2 minutes then got 7 ads. Everytime I go on twitch I feel like I'm trying to read a BuzzFeed article not watch a twitch stream.
This might have changed, but I am pretty sure that twitch forces you to COMPLETELY watch a full 30-sec ad to the end… Then you can skip around as much as you want for a reasonable amount of time before it serves you another. I think the intention is so users aren’t misincentivized to always jump to their 2nd-choice of stream just because their 1st had an ad, and they clicked away just to make it disappear. (I’m sure there are better solutions, but it makes sense from a design perspective.)
IMO, this isn’t incredibly different than UA-cam when it occasionally serves you an ad that is only skippable after a longer period of time. For example, UA-cam usually gives a couple ads that you can skip after five or 10 seconds, and then there’s the occasional 30 second unskippable pre-roll if you’re jumping around.
…Right? Those might have changed, so def correct me if I’m wrong… I’m a premium subscriber so i only notice this at other people’s houses lol
Another example with Twitch's ads that especially gets me is that if you get an ad you are now watching the stream with a pretty big delay and to fix it you have to either refresh the page or pause and unpause the stream
which both give you another set of ads
which gives you another big delay
You can also go settings, advanced, and turn low latency off and on again to resync
As a relatively recent twitch partner, (2021) can confirm never received the 70% split anyway, always been at 50
I often find myself going on twitch, getting a 30s - 1m ad instantly, and being so put off that i’ll just go watch youtube. It cant just be me either, i feel like this happens with a ton of potential viewers
You and me both brother
For the past year I've been watching Twitch Vods because of how bad this got. It kills live viewing a decent bit but I get no ads and can skip dead moments / parts of stream I don't care about. Twitch is just not what it used to be.
I refuse to watch Twitch for their unreasonable ads. At least UA-cam premium gets rid of ads completely.
That's me for sure. If the ad is skippable or if it has a rewind feature for the stream in real time like UA-cam, I might do it but having ads just make me miss the stream. And the ads are so goddamn long.
same i try to watch xqc overwatch gameplay and give up because of too many ads
another thing about twitch ads that i never see anyone mention is how fucking godawful the sound normalisation is on them. i usually like listening to streams/vods in the background while im either doing something or going to sleep but they 1000% have to either be someone im subbed to or from a youtube archive. you will have the most relaxing stream ever gently playing in the background and then the roaring of a thousand helicopters screaming about adobe photoshop will destroy your eardrums its ridiculous
that’s on purpose, they get your attention
@@katteisace4563 they get me off the website lol
It's my impression that they make them annoying so that you sub lmao
Getting vietnam flashbacks from spotify ads
Also how you will get hit with like 7-12 in a row of 15-30 seconds of unskippable ads, I just quit out the site any time my adblocker sells me lmaoo
i feel like if this goes the right way for youtube they could immediately swoop in and sign tons of huge streamers on like they did with ludwig because twitch simply wont pay well enough for a lot of people and the ones that are still making enough money might just move for the sake of convenience if the rest of twitch goes to shit with new policies or something like that
The thing about UA-cam ads is they are more like ads when you’re watching sports on TV, they give you a natural break to scratch your back or something. But you can’t really miss a second on twitch or you might miss a big moment. I often find myself switching to YT or a streaming service after a couple of ads on twitch bc they kinda kill the vibe
I'm so glad someone finally talks about how intrusive and awful the ads on Twitch are. Another thing that ads absolutely ruin too are raids (at least on mobile in my experience) since you're not immediately sent to the other broadcasters chat and instead have to go through another link that pops up. What happens when you go through that link though? A 30 second unskippable ad which makes you end up missing the streamers reaction to the raid.
Twitch is just giving so many reasons to leave their platform
Another thing - ads on vods. I just want to scroll through a vod to get to the highlights, not watch back to back ads
@@ca-ke9493 this exactly. Vod ads are like 3 back to back ads every 10 mins

I agree so much, especially with the initial ads when you first start watching. Another thing with the ads is that they’re ALWAYS the same 3 ads, it’s like the employees don’t actually watch to know how annoying that is. I’ve probably seen the same audible ad about 1000 times because I’d stick twitch on in the background at work. I despise audible now.

@@t0xictymdbd515 We're saying the site needs to be more easily navigable and have better streaming recommendations like Twitch does, not fewer ads. Work on your reading comprehension while we're in home ec.

@@neoncamouflage bro he was talking about twitch, twitch is easily navigable. theyre just reducing ads so they have to find another way to make profit, maybe u should ' Work on your reading comprehension while we're in home ec.'
Twitch has a chance to not make this change. We all know what would happen if they do but does Twitch really know how bad it will be. I'm not too close to Twitch culture, but Ludwig and many others have already paved a path to show Twitch streamers that the culture of Twitch can be sustained on another platform.
@Locked ur mom
The problem is the culture of Twitch can't even be sustained on Twitch. That's why they're doing this. They don't profit. Creators would do well to offer up ideas to Twitch that might help increase revenues in ways that preserves the culture, like Poki did with her suggestion of more border ads.

I don't really watch live streams too often and rarely do I watch them live but i'd much rather look like live streams for games on twitch instead of youtube
especially since the category of what you're doing can change as your stream changes so it doesn't matter if a streamer has streamed for 4 hours already doing something else if I'm tuning in for a particular category

As a creator I struggle a lot choosing between UA-cam and Twitch for streaming. UA-cam is superior for discoverability hands down. There is no way to filter for streams in a user-friendly way (which there should be) but UA-cam still offers more. If you watch one stream for 2 minutes you will get at least one stream on your homepage if you're subscribed (in my experience) which is superior to Twitch discoverability. Twitch has no discoverability if you're the new kid on the block, full stop. Your only hope is a raid from a bigger streamer. But UA-cam's streaming UI is dog water. Twitch UI is much better from a user and creator perspective for sure. But UA-cam has better rev splits, and less bias bans/strikes. While Twitch will ban someone for something minor and then give a person who basically threatened violence a free pass and reduce their ban because they made a threat. They both have strengths and disadvantages as of now. But the second UA-cam gets a livestream overhaul and makes it functional from a user and creator perspective Twitch is done for from my point of view. People have disliked the platform for years and this does not help their case.
Very good points. I think a big selling point for me with YT's live streaming is the ability to rewind while the stream is live. Super useful if I miss something. With Twitch's UI, you have to jump through a lot of hoops. On the flip side, Twitch's chat/mod capabilities are far superior

They want less small streamers and kill them off faster. They want their whales.
But only half of them.
whales wouldn't want to stay either tho
Sort of like dankpods couldn’t get payment for months on his garbage time streams and moved to the independent floatplane platform run by LTT.
you need the smaller streamers for the whale model to work. otherwise your whales will all "die out" in a few years, popular streamers will rotate out by the nature of things, and if no one is there to replace them the website will die off.
unless they're transitioning to the milking phase of twitch, where they bleed it for every penny they can until it dies then that seems like a bad idea
@@TheShizzlemop It's not really that bad of an idea because the platform was honestly going to fail overtime anyway. Just like people are getting tired of netflix people will also get tired of watching live streams over time. It's not something that will just die off but it's something that a platform like Twitch just can't keep up with as the demand dwindles. They don't make enough money to keep that system running forever. Where as youtube has a lot more money coming in and backing it. If they start seeing the platform is falling off ANYWAY then they'll most likely just milk it for everything they can because you'd want to make as much profit as possible for closing down.

Twitch really shot themselves in the foot way back with the Ninja scenario. That really opened everyone's eyes to how terrible twitch is when it comes to creators. So many other streaming services exist, that there is becoming less and less incentive to work with the company that doesn't support its creators.
I also think it really revealed their colors when Ludwig explained that he had two great offers from both Twitch and UA-cam and it was a hard choice, but UA-cam showed they wanted him and even offered to negotiate more. Then when we went back to Twitch they just said "Ahh oh well have fun at UA-cam." Honestly twitch ads are a big reason why I never watch twitch. Even when I first discovered your channel on here, I never made the move over to twitch bc as soon as I try, I get struck with so many unskippable ads. Same with other streamers on twitch. And since you can't rewind twitch streams, it makes it easier to want to leave ESPECIALLY for people who don't like to miss things. With games like GTA RP, it's easy to fall behind on what's happening when ads roll in, and if you miss too much, you're more likely to just leave and wait for the VOD to be uploaded to youtube. That being said, I really like the way azan goes about ads and makes it a point to only do 1 min at the top of the hour every hour.

Now that you mention it, even though I don't really like watching streams in general, I really love the simple fact that you can rewind a livestream on youtube and play it on 2x speed.
Yeah honestly I prefer watching vods or streams on UA-cam than I ever like on twitch
I can’t believe twitch is killing their website.
i can
i CAN'T BELIEVE IT EITHER
A lot of websites are
really? they have been killing it since 2020, maybe even earlier
Kinda like how Tumblr killed themselves
3:18 I got an ad right after he says this lol
5:55 mobile youtube drives me nuts. I spend countless hours on desktop blocking ads and then my mobile is like HERE HAVE ALL THE ADS. Very frustrating experience.
The thing is, YT has it perfected. Twitch live ads make you miss out on content that you have no way to rewind to unless you go back down to the vod which is still riddled with ads. On YT, not many ads on livestreams and ads are mainly on the vods and regular videos which you don’t miss out on when watching an ad, the content is still there and paused for you after you watch only 5 to 30 seconds.
You can also rewind UA-cam livestreams if you miss something.
People making mods like BTTV, FFZ and 7TV have done way more for Twitch than the actual company has done. I remember complaining about Twitch not having a live rewind function like UA-cam and most other streaming sites 10 years ago and they still don't even have that. You can work around it now, but it still makes you wonder what engineers in companies like Twitch and Twitter even do when the only things that have really released in the past 10 years are bits, hype trains, and API for some overlay stuff that is still pretty niche.
Sad part about twitch not having a good rewind system, the vod is published live, whereas with YT, it is kinda till you hit the 2 hour mark. You stream on Twitch for 8 hours, as soon as you end stream, it is right there ready to be watched in full glory. So you would think that adding a rewind shouldn't be an issue.
3:19 that ad placement was amazing
i agree! the adds r the main reason that even if someone is live, ill wait for the vod. i love interacting live as much as the next person, but waiting for the vod on youtube or just watching somthing live on youtube instead is just a better experience to me.
4:17 another thing that honestly made me want to delete the app entirely is that it would show me the actual stream for a few seconds, and it could be a really important moment then a 30 second, unskippable ad pops ip and i completely miss the moment. then i have to go back in the vod because i want to actually fucking see what happened and they make me watch another fucking 30 second ad to even watch the moment they took away from me. now i barely watch twitch because they try so hard to cuck me
Not being able to skip adds on twich is a major turn off
Moment he mentions the word Ad, that little countdown on the side appeared and a ad showed up, lol
That ad placement was golden😂😂👍🏼
The ads when skipping between different streams is one of the reasons I've never got into Twitch. If I'm trying to find a streamer who is doing something I like, I don't want to watch 10x 30second ads within 10 minutes as I'm checking each of my key streamers when I hop on
I usually watch UA-cam and I’ve had premium for about a year so that probably influences my opinion but almost any time I go to watch a twitch stream I immediately leave bc the ads are so annoying and so long (compared to YT) I’d rather wait for the VOD to be uploaded
@@vatsalchaudhari wtf
Why not just use an ad blocker and save the money. Premium’s only good feature is the removal of ads which you can get for free
@@schizzle5648 Using adblocker cucks over the creators. Premium let's you get the best of both worlds. Support creators and get rid of ads.
@@dombrovskiy12 Not only does it support creators, but it does so much more
@@schizzle5648 i had an ad blocker for a bit but most sites could detect it and make me turn it off. Also on mobile Premium lets you watch/listen to videos with the app closed and your phone locked and i listen to alot of podcasts/long form content throughout the day so that was a big seller for me.
1:53 It’s actually a 30% pay cut (proportionally).
The number in the split was indeed lowered 20% though
Funny thing about the ads on UA-cam is if your not watching the video on the UA-cam app and instead on safari or chrome then you only get hit with one ad at the beginning and depending on how long the video is maybe one in the middle if the videos over 30 minutes long which is very nice
One thing I think UA-cam should implement is a "bonus membership feature" with youtube premium, similar to twitch prime but for youtube's memberships.
UA-cam premium is that one service I'd really like to get, but costs just a little too much money for my college student pockets; but implementing a way to also directly support one content creator I really like would be amazing and make me buy it in a heartbeat!
You should send that recommendation directly to UA-cam :)
They should make it a dollar for a week or something, a week of no ad. UA-cam have probably around a billion or more users. Imagine a billion of people goes 'oh so cheap!' and frequently bought the premium membership.
Honestly, the price is indeed too high for young people. They should make it more affordable- they are able to stay afloat before even without bunch of ads, why cant they now? They have no competition.
Idk how it is in America, but here in Sweden, if you're a student (Idk about highschool, but for University it works), you get a pretty big discount. I think I pay $7 a month, and since I don't use Spotify it's great to also have a music service included in that price. I think I average 2-7h a day on YT, so $7 def feels worthwhile
I'm pretty sure views from people who pay for UA-cam support creators more than people who watch for free. It's not direct donations level, but part of your membership goes to creators you watch.
@@HampusTman Yes, that's true for America too!
Honestly, the ads on Twitch was a big part of why I completely stopped using the platform.
They were awful.
I liked watching streams to fall asleep and the ads were so loud and so frequent that I just stopped using Twitch entirely.
I've seen ads back to back on UA-cam even when switching videos. Usually the ads are two 15 second unskippable ads.
The thing about youtube ads is they don't interfere with you viewing all the content. Sure you have to sit through a few seconds/minutes of ads, but then the video goes right back to where you left off. If I'm watching a speedrun on twitch and an ad pops up at a key moment, there's no going back because it's live. I lose access to that content.
Twitch: proposes cutting streamer revenue
Ludwig, a youtube streamer: NOT IN THIS CAR
I'm a software engineer, and the amount of work that goes into maintaining and bug fixing is insane- and you'd think that Twitch would be rocking out new features left and right, but even that process is long and involved, requiring multiple people in various capacities. Dev, review, dev, review, testing, dev, review, testing, etc etc.. its a process.
Before I got into the industry I couldn't understand how a company could possibly need hundreds of developers, but it makes much more sense once the curtain is pulled back.
I am a software engineer student and doing an intership now. What you are saying is definitely true, especially the streaming part is difficult to maintain and expensive as hell. But I think for the scale that they operate. They could set up a group that focuses on small but impactfull changes for the average viewer, and see what sticks like youtube does a lot.
yeah this seems more like they suffer from management issues. tech startup with mangement issues, shocker.
ive always hated when i chat something or we are all in the middle of a convo and when i say something else and i know the streamer is talking to me then an ad comes on and i miss everything they say. especially if its 3-5 ads. i just leave the entire app at that point. lmao.
5:20 what you said is so true. When i watch twitch on my mobile device and when I switch from one channel to another i have to watch unskipable ad and its so frustrating. Which sometimes make me close twitch and go to UA-cam instead
The day UA-cam implements a proper live streaming tab for finding new streamers and making it easier to find and watch live streams by channels you’re subscribed to is the day Twitch dies.
I think people not using Twitch anymore after complaining about everything they’re doing wrong is the day Twitch dies
Honestly it seems like twitch is stuck by Amazon and streamers should also partly understand that If things don’t change, they can get rid of twitch, we like to think of things as permanent rather than realizing if they don’t please their superiors there is no twitch. Overall great video Ludwig I love the true and honest content showing your unbiased feelings.
I don’t think Amazon will just “get rid of” twitch, even they know that’s just a waste of their sphere of social influence, time, and profit. Even if they went through with worse case scenario, Twitch is going to still be around as a platform
Twitch doesnt want Amazon to liquidate them, they need Amazon's money; only Elon can do better for them
then its amazon being stupid instead, doesn't change the bottom line
@@paddington1670
Oh look it’s an Elon fan who thinks the answer to every single business problem is to throw Elon musk at it. Elon is not that good at business my guy, and besides now that Elon owns Twitter I doubt the government would allow him to buy twitch as well due to anti-trust and anti-monopoly laws.
@@courier6960 they make no profit on twitch, twitch bleeds cash. Even if you’re a huge company it’s not a smart move.
Did you purposefully put an ad at 3:21 cause man... That timing was perfect lmao
Perfect ad placement
This is the EXACT reason why I don't watch a single streamer I'm not subbed to. I also can't afford to sub to more than 1 on top of prime.
Twitch is the reason why I watch UA-cam.
the most annoying part abt the twitch ad thing is switching thru multiple streams for smash tournaments. squad stream is a solution sometimes, but if not tournaments w multiple streams are miserable to watch
So pay to not have ads
Do you see a Connor McGregor fight for free? No it’s payperview
If you want uninterrupted content you have to pay for it Ludwig is just paid more by UA-cam than through ad revenue he knows his view time is lower due to the increase of ads whether political or non profit animal shelters
when Lud was talking about his videos on Yt having a lot of ads I got an ad
the ads everytime i switch to different streamer on twitch is exactly why i never use twitch
With twitch becoming more “mainstream” it’s awesome seeing all these great creators get the spot light and money bags they deserve, but it’s also very sad to see the corporate vultures closing in to pick at the corpse of this wonderful platform. I suppose it’s just a price you have to pay.
Burh twitch has been mainstream for years they are n0. 1 in the past few years wdym spotlight lmao
twitch was mainstream now fb and shit are becoming more mainstream twitch is struggling because everything else is more for the viewer and not throwing 300 adds at people, its been around forever and its one of the worst platforms for viewer experience
@@Apple_Beshy ask your parents if they’ve heard of twitch or know what goes on there lol. It definitely hasn’t been mainstream for years. It’s making its way into the normie world now but still far from “mainstream for the past few years”
I've pulled up twitch and closed it within a minute because of the back to back ads. Sometimes I want to see what someone is streaming but the ad makes me just go to someone else, and the same thing happens again.
Interesting how youtube consciously avoids that. I've never noticed it but I guess that's sort of the point.
There was an ad in the middle of him talking about ads
5:30 I keep getting ads whenever I watch UA-cam on my Switch
I wholeheartedly agree with what Lud said about ads. Very often I'd tune in to twitch to casually watch something, get an unskippable 30 seconds ad, watch it, get a SECOND ad, lose patience, and swap back to youtube streams
I only really use twitch for smash tournament streams nowadays, but recently ive even started switching to watching vods of those on youtube instead
9:45 UA-cam's discoverability isn't about finding your live stream, it's about clips and videos from your Livestream being served by the algorithm. Growing your live audience as your non-live content grows and you gain a following. Twitch just cannot compete with that.
That’s true, like sure the discoverability of livestreams on UA-cam sucks but discoverability of your clips and videos is way better, and once I watch a few vids of someone, their live stream gets recommended to me when they’re live anyway. I never look for lud’s livestream it just pops up if he happens to be live
EXACTLY
Twitch: “oh no, people found out our streamers are well-compensated, we have to resolve this controversy asap”
if there was a "shorts" home page kinda thing on twitch for clips.. i think that might help with discoverability.
but i love how youtube lets you set a reminder for an individual stream. that's nice, sometimes i wanna see one thing not all of their content past and future
The way twitch does ads is exactly why I don’t really watch any twitch streamers. And not being able to rewind is a massive downside for me, the streams I watch are packed with content and I lose a LOT of the experience if I miss even a minute
How about you go touch grass? Instead of watch Ludwig cook a potato outside and peeing???? Guess that’s PACKED FULL OF CONTENT

Twitch has been stacking 30 second ads 7 deep! You’re totally right it makes what’s good about twitch (live content and lots of creators) difficult to appreciate. Once in a while I’ll get an ad with a small preview box of the stream under it, but that’s rare.
yeah i had like 4 minutes of ads one time and instantly alt -f4'd cause wtf is that.
Ill sometimes get ads for simply just refreshing or reloading a stream that Im on even though I just watched one
You mentioned UA-cam having ads and IMMEDIATELY an ad played ffs
