Absolutely insane that games which don't have gambling are punished for having 'gambling imagery' .... But games that are entirely dedicated to getting people addicted to loot box opening are considered OKAY.

"sucks but dats da rules!" rules change with time. the massive uptick in games with heavy gambling mechanics requires new rules which luckily is changing but the fact that "cards = gambling" but literal pay2win lottery systems arent is less of a rule and more of an oversight.

Most governments/economic systems on the planet allow for a stock market, study after study has proven that while skill does play a role, luck and persistence mean much more in the world of business, if you really really want to look at it, gambling is only ok today when its oked by the government, which makes no sense as they dont do anything to make it safer

There are also a TON of game that contain a poker minigame, such as RDR2, Far Cry 3, Dragon Quest 11, Tales of Vesperia, Super Mario 64 DS, Watch Dogs, etc. It's super common. They all teach the player REAL poker hands too, not Balatro's roguelike Joker stuff. Why haven't they been rated 18+?!

For real. As someone who really hates gambling and how it's permeated our culture even past casinos (how ridiculous sports betting has gotten) and how games skirt past it with addictive, restrictive games with freemium models and loot boxes, from trashy gachas to AAA games... Balatro looked like a well-thought out, awesome game when I saw NL play it, even tho I know I won't ever play it myself

Aesthetics are powerful. People are banning it because it just looks like cards and the appearance of banning gambling games is more important to them than any real rules or morals. It's insane.

i mean almost every japanese rpg game had gambling. ff has the golden saucer. dragon quest has its casino in every game even 11. pokemon had one. and all these in game casinos had slots, card games, etc and were required to get certain items so u couldnt avoid them.

When northernlion first played this he hit the end of the demo and the dev gave him a key for an unlimited demo and after a couple hours the dev asked NL to stop playing it because the chat was too hype and he didn't want the game to get overhyped. Now that it's out, we know that there was no overhype, the game is just fantastic. Hope this gets resolved.

The fact that in game app purchase Lootbox's or CSGO crates are acceptable to record and upload but Baltro isnt acceptable and allowed is absurd
The stupidity of the story is that lootboxs or case opening streams don't get taken down for gambling, streamers doing CS websites where you gamble don't get taken down
As someone living in the Netherlands I get mad about this every other week. We have anti gambling laws that I - in theory - agree with, but in practice are absolutely terrible. I can't buy loot boxes in the MMO I play (which is fair enough), but I can still buy Fifa card packs. I can't get some of the FREE loot boxes in the same MMO, but I can buy Apex item packs and was able to buy Overwatch Lootboxes before they stopped existing. To make a long story short, most anti-gambling laws seem to exist purely to make companies bribe countries into allowing their game, which is why large games still exist and small games get screwed over.
antigambling laws are so strict where i live that we have banned TWITCH PREDICTIONS and GTA5 FREE CASINO SPIN (and other casino games)

"e" means X*(10^Y), and "^" indicates that it's just X^Y? (Sorry, I suck at formatting... and math.)
@@bilbobaggins9167 Yes it's basically just notation X^Y is just X to the power Y whereas XeY is X * 10 to the power Y, its needed a lot in science where you can be working with like particle numbers or pressure for instance and you can end up with a lot of very high (or very low numbers)

I had no idea Luck be a Landlord faced these issues too. There are ZERO elements of gambling in Luck be a Landlord, there's barely even random chance. What, are literally all games ever going to be banned now then? Most infuriating is that Google isn't touching the shifty knockoffs with micro-transactions and monetization beyond sticker price. Man this just ruined my morning mood.
It’s only about games that look like they have gambling not actual gambling (although there is quite a bunch of random chance in the form of rarity/symbol/item choices, it’s essential to the game and so it is perfectly acceptable but it is definitely there)

@@danielkaniewski727this is actually why remakes of old games don’t have game corners anymore. Even virtual console releases of old games have had their ratings increased in some areas because of game corners and some versions of the game have them removed entirely.

Same. Played poker all the time with friends betting nothing but pride in high school. Didn’t affect me at all after I turned 18, never gambled real money before.
Because the gameplay of this game is fun (plus it's a rougelite) and different. If there was a physically sold version of the game people would play it but there won't be because its singleplayer and physically held games are better if you play it with others

They’re going after Balataro because they can. Any game that actually promotes gambling like CS cases or FIFA packs arent getting hit because they’re too big.
Battlefront 2 was the huge takedown along with Overwatch loot boxes then it just sputtered to a halt.
This just goes to show how lootboxes or gachas were never meant to be allowed by supervisors, but their cutesy unassuming looks are so unfamiliar to those people so they don't get banned. As soon as the look matches classic gambling (even if the content itself isn't it) they kick into alert mode.
Personally I have a hard time believing it's just naive ignorance. I'm assuming the payment models that games feature are considered by supervisors and even the most cursory glance can show you which ones are actually gambling.

This is a similar thing that got the game corners removed in pokemon games from gen 5 onward (gen 4 if you're european). But there it's more just straight up a simulated slot machine where you bet your own in game currency. But i dont think balatro even has you betting fake money on the poker stuff. The money is all spent on luck modifiers basically. It's not gambling as much as it is just a way more indepth coin flip. The worst thing you could argue is that it kinda teaches you some blackjack stuff. It's actually less bad than the luigi casino minigames on the ds
even still, that means that ANY fake game currency falls under that, you get random items from enemies in terraria, you get random abilities in games like hades and roboquest, so those all could be considered gambling then? fake currency is EVERYTHING because counting is EVERYTHING. if it aint real money it aint gambling.
@drewdadew This ingame currency can't be traded into real money, but some MMO currency/item can be traded into real money.
The difference is huge. in the cases where real money can be traded, people would make mass bot farms, there are lawsuits about rigged loot boxes.
I think it is fair for anti gambling law to restrict games in some cases.
At the very least, games where ingame currency can be directly bought by real money need a tool to protect the users.
Such a shame. Been having so much fun playing Balatro. The dev deserves all the love and I hope this gets fixed ASAP

i love that ludwig knows about Aliensrock, Aliensrock is truly the best youtuber ever. Also love the Haelian mention, he truly is amazing! Also i love balatro currently, i hope it goes back to 3+ soon!
What people need to remember, most regulators have never played video games and don't know that much about them.
They see playing cards and green table, and they either think Solitaire or Poker, and thus, banned.
Funnily enough, these same regulators have no issue for providing loopholes and amnisty for large companies like casinos, gacha games, betting clubs, etc...
Same thing happened to 'Luck Be a Landlord,' which is a roguelike with a slots aesthetic that came out last year. No actual gambling involved, but banned from google play in 13 countries.
Luck Be a Landlord came out way later than last year. I think it's been on Steam for like three years now.
Balatro is my favorite game this year and one of my favorite games ever. And it was made by 1 guy. And has no gambling in it. This is ridiculous. Thanks for covering this on your huge platform, Ludwig. Hope this gets resolved soon :/

Daily Reminder that the ESRB is entirely managed by the video game industry (AKA the industry making the actual gambling games for children)
Tbf it wasn’t the esrb that did it, they don’t have a +3 rating. It was the discount esrb pegi
ESRB is a North American game content rating, and Balatro is rated E 10+ ESRB rating and is on the Nintendo eShop and others in NA.
The issue is outside of NA such as it's18+ PEGI rating in EU. I don't think Ludwig made that clear enough because I was shocked enough to look.
Another ridiculous thing is Vegas Party has a PEGI 12 rating and is in the EU Nintendo eShop (It has a ESRB Teen rating). That's an extremely inconsistent enforcement of the ‘contains prominent gambling imagery and material that instructs about gambling’ restriction. But ESRB is based in this case.
Hopefully that means PEGI and others will change.
Nintendo taught an entire of generation of kids to gamble on Mario DS being dealt hands by Luigi. The irony of taking this off their stores lmao.

Uck be Landlord has one of the best, most innovative UI's I have seen in the last few years, it honestly blew my mind and it has concepts every single game should copy. Sucks to hear they are getting screwed over.
I really think it is beyond time to regulate and update gambling laws, if not across the whole world then at least in the US.

Check out the game, "Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers". It's a blackjack based roguelike that id not at all based on gambling, there is no real money involved, and it's super fun. The full game releases this year, I wonder if it'll also get banned in various countries.
If this one got banned, that onen will likely get hit too, it is "blackjack" so it is evil gambling. Sucks so much.

I've been playing this game since they released a beta (or alpha idk) version last summer and I fell in love. As soon as the last demo came out I was telling all of my friends about it and streamed it on launch day. Hearing this news makes me so sad knowing less people will be able to experience this and that the dev now has to suffer. Thank you for making a video about it

You say that like the dev isn't already incredibly successful. The game sold like 250,000 units in it's first three days. At 15 dollars a copy, that's nearly 4 million bucks. Even after all the storefronts and publishers take their cut, the still millions of dollars earned. That's more money than most indie devs can ever hope of seeing, all earned by one dude in half a week. Assuming this gets resolved in a reasonable amount of time, this won't be anything but a minor speedbump in this game's success.

also in poker you cant discard cards over and over to choose which cards to play. the only thing that balatro takes from poker is the scoring system. its like if a game decided to count their score the same way as football or basketball. but it has completly different gameplay.

Only money I've ever spent on loot boxes was when I was around 13 on Overwatch. I spent like $300 on my mom's credit card hoping she wouldn't notice... This was right after my dad died of cancer and my mom was drinking an entire bottle of wine (if not more) every night. I of course felt very ashamed of it afterwards and have done nothing of the sort in the past 6 or so years.

I think the first 4 generations of pokemon games all had some form of a casino in it with the first 3 having full on slots. Why weren't those rated 18+ for "encouraging gambling"?
This is clearly an abuse of power by the ratings boards for some reason and thankfully the community is seeing right through it.
The reason they stopped having game corner is because EU changed laws and was gonna make Pokemon age rated, so they had to remove game corner from international releases of some gen 4 titles.

I’ve been tracking balatro for several months before it came out. Playing the demo’s and watching creator play through’s. I don’t understand how they haven’t thought about this earlier and I really hope this gets fixed cause it’s been one of the only video games that I’ve I’ve actively followed and spent any amount of time playing. Really cool to see lud playing it and it getting the love it deserves.

I think it is the visualization of gambling, the cards are what you would see at casino, slot machine is not far off from a casino model. If they kept the same math but switch everythings name and visuals, i wonder if they would have the same success.
