Fantastic of you to explain the importance of oxygen in an aquarium, as many people do not understand the importance of fish needing oxygen, even though they are in water! It's unfortunate that many local fish store employees are not knowledgeable enough or don't explain enough about the importance of the nitrogen cycle or oxygen in an aquarium! Many new hobbyist end up wondering: "Why do my new fish keep dying??" I'm a fish-keeper for over 30 years, and want to thank you, and commend you on all your fantastic videos on fish keeping!!👍👍👍
I'm so glad I watched this video! I am a beginner and I just started my new fish tank. A 40 gallon tank was given to me. I noticed that my bala sharks were panting and my angel fish always were at the top of the tank and it looked like they were gasping for air like you said. As soon as I got an a air pump, they aren't doing that anymore. Now I feel bad for not giving them what they needed 🥲
Great information 🤜💥🤛 I have a hangover filter, an air pump and a sprayer that pulls water from under the gravel, the sprayer & the air bubbles I only keep it on for 3,4 hrs, the oxygen is what is purifying the water and kills the bad bacteria creating more beneficial bacteria. Thank you 👍
I use two canister filters with two of the three outputs pointing up and a sponge filter with an air stone inside of it for lots of surface agitation. The fish like swimming through the bubbles put off from the air stone as well.
Can I install an air stone without a filter for an aquascape/pond? I will be intending to have lots of plants and only intend to have a few neon tetras, and don't intend to install a big water filter just for that. It is in a white water tub, so sunlight will be minimal and algae will also be minimized. I will be using a solar driven air stone instead.

Hi. I need your help please!! Don't know what to do. My cichlids are swimming on the top gasping for oxygen. Water test, amm-0, Nitrate-40, Nitrite-0,Hardness-25(very soft),Chlorine-0,Alkalinity-180,PH-7.8,Temp-82. Thx in advance. Did 25% water change...
I use an air stone and I ordered a sponge filter that will replace the air stone. I stopped using my 603B canister filter because it took over my tank with micro bubble I could not get rid of. I could not see the fish any longer and loss several of them. I only have a 6.5 gallon tank. I put back the original filter that using a filter cartridge. I did a water change and cleaned my gravel. I am sure I upset my bacteria cycle but I had to do something. The water is now crystal clear. I agree I should have bought the canister from a local fist store. I did everything to seal every connections on the canister pump but it just seem to make things worst. Everyone kept telling me I have a air leak somewhere. I decided to purchase new sponges for canister filter to see if that helps. I do have ceramic balls in the bottom of the filter under the sponges before the water go out the pump to the tank. I will have to test the canister filter once the new sponges arrive and are inserted using another container to see if it still creates micro bubbles. If it does I will have to decide if I want to purchase another one. Thanks for the video.
For small tanks, I'm definitely a sponge filter fan :D Of course, you can't use carbon or anything like that...but they're still efficient and keep the water clear : ua-cam.com/video/31X1tIdMMgc/v-deo.html
Hi Jeff. For what it's worth, I had the same problem with my 304b. I couldn't stop it from blowing crazy amounts of micro bubbles to the point I replaced it with an FX6 (which is freakin awesome). When I set up a new 29gal I wanted to try the 304b one more time. I gooped the shit out of the main seal with Vaseline but it didn't help. Then I gooped the two seals in the intake/output and it worked. No more bubbles! It's been about 2 months and it's still working fine. I'm about to service it today, so we'll see how that goes. Good luck!

Hey , I just got an air pump, there is no variable adjuster. It has two outputs so I have two 5 inch air stones In my 29 gallon aquarium. Is it possible to have TOO much oxygen in the tank. Just curious, I am new to the hobby. Thanks in advance great video!
You can get an valve for airline tubing at your local pet/fish store 😊 It could help. As for too much movement, it depends on your fish, but 2x5 inch stones isn't too much.
Hello ,how are you? I was recently doing routine maintenance on my tank. I opened up my Top Fin air pump just to see if it was looking ok and it has rust/corrosion on its motor. It's not a crazy amount but I'm assuming I should just retire it and use it for parts if needed. But I was wondering what are the danger possibilities of running an air pump with corrosion. I'll take an answer from anyone . Thk
I have a old ten year old goldfish moving to a 20 gallon tank , I just bought a new airstone cause his old one is getting brittle and grungy. I have a hangover filter and want to make sure his new tank is 100% safe for my old boy. I've put in the recommended amount of aquasafe to neutralize the tapwater , let it run for 72 hours so it gets to room temperature and I put in the recommended bioclear. Is there anything I am missing?
I have a 75 gallon tank and purchased a 47" spray bar for my canister filter. My African cichlids love it! It creates the perfect surface agitation and is silent.
It's a minor misconception that air bubbles put air in the water column of the aquarium. Actually, they do but not the way some people may think! Air bubbles are tiny balls of air -not necessarily O² but air NTL.. So, once the tiny pockets of air make their way to the surface to the water, they burst and at that moment the water tension is broken. It's at that precise time that the oxygen is introduced into the water column of the aquariums water. Many people use a thing called 'Sponge filters' which is a piece of coarse foam that's wrapped around a airstone fed by using an air pump thus causing bubbles of all sizes to draw water through the foam sponge (the filtration process of the filter as a whole) and releasing air bubbles....
Hello, I have 90 gal tank with 15 cichlid & nearly 50 fries of 1 inch size in breeding net hanged in same tank, I am facing problem of low oxygen in tank for that I have added 5 air stones in tank & one wave maker for cleaning sand substrate also for oxygenating water but still I saw my fishes some time taking fast breath specially after feed. Plz guide me what can be the problem in my tank, 1 point this issue starts from last month when I changed substrate from gravel to sand before with gravel there was no issue of low oxygen only 3 air stone used no wave maker. Now some time fishes looks OK but again start fast breathing also stay on air bubbles.
My husband has Fluval canister filter told my husband let them turned on their air pump that my husband has connected to his sponge filters. He thought the canister filter be enough. So I just turned it on 😅 now my fish are not panting super happy again. 45 gallon tank
Hey, I have 36 aquarium, I got 2 sticks of air bubblers and volcano and sponge of air bubble, my big question is , is that too much to have a lot of bubblers at once? I really need help about it
I have used an air pump for about 30 years. Currently I have a canister filter with a spray bar that has surface agitation for 3/4 of my 30 gal long. I also use a power head/filter the opposite direction about 2/3 from the bottom; hence, I got a lot of water movement from top to bottom. FYI, I have a species tank with Tetras, plus Corys, Plecos, and Oto Cats, and a few snails.
I have 2 FX6's with the outflow at the top agitating the water, 2 power heads 1 at the top agitating the surface and the other and the bottom on the opposite side circulating the water, and 2 large sponge filters creating extra filtration and of course oxygen. I can actually see bubbles rising from my substrate so hopefully this means plenty of oxygen for the fishies Lol
