Have you made a mistake like this before? Do you use air stones in your aquariums? What do you use for surface agitation? Get an awesome t-shirt from INTO THE AM: intotheam.com/tazawa
When I was setting up a new tank I thought my canister filter would provide enough surface agitation I was wrong. I had to add 2 airstones and wave maker for 72g bow front.
I super aerate the water as it flows naturally from my overflow boxes into my first sump chamber This heavy aeration aslo improves the efficiency of the nitrogen cycle as the super oxygenated water flows through my various porosity sponges.
Step one of my tank maintenance checklist is to set an alarm for one hour later. That's when I run thru the mental list of did I plug in / turn on everything. Thank you Zenzo
Another thing people don't think about is when they seal off the top of their tanks to stop evaporation without an air stone. This can suffocate your fish. All the air between the water and the cover gets used up and just the co2 is left.
This is what I was noticing with my guppies now. They are staying near the top looking for some air. I just put an air stone in today so will see how they respond to this in the next 24 hours
I'm a little surprised your fish were already gasping at the top after the time period you described. Two weeks ago we had a storm that knocked our power out for 42 hours (Tuesday 10 pm until Thursday 4:00 pm). My eight cichlid tanks, a couple of which are overstocked like yours, were without filtration or surface agitation the entire time. I feared the worst, but I only had 3 fatalities out of many dozens of adults and fry.
good video buddy i use an air stone and us a return pipe from my pressure filter also using a fluval 4 submerged filter just below the surface to agitate the water so plenty going on in my cichlid tank thanks for sharing my friend all the best martyn 👍
I always keep an air stone or sponge filter running at all times including during a water change as they can run safely without water. This way I don't have to remember to turn them back on.
The canister filter Venturi will be a good visual way of seeing the filter is working. If you don’t see bubbles then you know the filter is either turned off by accident or clogged and not actually filtering correctly
Hello, Is it possible to keep only air pump in my 15 gallon planted tank and remove HOB filter? As the water change can clear out the fish wastes so why Both air pump and HOB water filter should run in the tank. Please advise with your recommendations.
This just happened to me about 2 weeks ago I live in Columbus Ohio I was a part of the big AEP outage that we had and I lost my German red and my red borlieye broke my heart I ended up having to go and get bubble boxes which saved the other 15 fish in my tank. since then i went and got a sponge filter with an airstone I definitely will never run a tank without an air stone again and I'm over filter just like you are crazy cost me almost $140 to replace the two fish that I lost. Great advice as always.
Hi. I need your help please!! Don't know what to do. My cichlids are swimming on the top gasping for oxygen. I do a air stone and wave maker. Water test, amm-0, Nitrate-40, Nitrite-0,Hardness-25(very soft),Chlorine-0,Alkalinity-180,PH-7.8,Temp-82. Thx in advance. Did 25% water change...
I'm currently setting up a 95Lt aquarium with black box 100 wave filter. It's gonna be aquascaped with real wood, stones and plants. It's gonna be the home for one axolotl and 2 golden apple snails. Do I need an air stone? Some saying yes and some they say no cuz the filter it's gonna do the job..
I have a 40 gallon breeder with sponge filter. The line got kinked and I didn’t notice till the next morning when everyone was at the top gasping for air I was lucky only lost 1
My air line tubing from the pump to the check valve keeps coming off. It won't go all the way down to the base, but the other connections don't either and they don't come off, even the one in the water. Any suggestions?
@inkspill9189 oh actually I quit the hobby several months ago, but in regards to the airline tubing, it was just because there was too much tension and vibration on that line which was an easy fix. However I just announced yesterday on my channel that I'm getting back in to the hobby. I'm looking at a 40 breeder that's on sale right now, and that's a tank I've always wanted, so it seemed like a good time to start things up again
I use a sponge filter with ziss airstone and USB nano pump (so quiet you can't hear it from even 2 feet away) in every tank. In my 20L I also have a HOB to help with filtration and water movement in the long tank. The nano pump works for 2+ days when the power goes out using a regular cell phone emergency battery. I always have an airstone!

I’ve only kept fish for a year or 2 and one thing I’ve learned is every tank should have an air stone, it’s just so beneficial.

I run an air stone inside every sponge filter I have which is 4 for all my tanks. That way I get the pros of the airstone without seeing it.

Is there not enough agitation from canoster filter lily pipes??
If the water falls down from a filter and does not move the entire surface of the aquarium, is it enough for oxygenation?
Thanks for the video, definitely happens to the best of us,I did something similar a month ago, appreciate you bro

Sounds like you put them on the wrong way the air flows through one way

Do guppies need an air stone.
Yes
My mother did something similar and we lost two 10 inch Oscar's. Not a happy day.
