He was a legend, but an infamous one in their eyes. The alternate ending for the movie also shows this, and I think gives the movie and title a lot more meaning

In the book he only finds a dog and it sticks around a couple days. No real connection unlike the movie. Samantha was his last tie to his personal humanity. When she died he lost all of his remaining hope. While it was sad that she died and we cried over it.....we were crying bc at that moment all of us felt like him.
Loved both ending (1)shows us the value of sacrifice of once life for the better ones out there/2)the others shows us, no matter what life has to offer you keep on having hope and keep on going youll finally make it out,time heals everything.
