I meant that it was the best movie of 2016. It's the best science fiction movie I've seen in a very long time. It's originality alone sets it apart in an age of awful rehashes and remakes.
dont compare arrival with interstellar. interstellar was ballsy project that everybody gave a green card too, because it was Nolan. Arrival was such a beautiful emotional story
Interstellar and Arrival are very much alike, they both delve into a part of sci-fi that hasn't really been explored yet. Both in completely different ways however scientifically they tried to obey as many laws of physics as possible but also explored theoretical physics. Are you saying that at the end of interstellar you didn't think about science and that there is still so much undiscovered. Both were equally as good and will go down to me, as the two best sci-fi films to be made.

I don't think she kept that information from her husband. She actually told him and he left because he thought that she chose to have a baby even though she knew that their kid would die. Here are the lines from that scene: -Are you gonna leave me like daddy did? -Oh, Hannah, honey, your daddy didn't leave you. You're gonna see him this weekend. -He doesn't look at me the same way anymore. -It's my fault. I told him something that he wasn't ready to hear. -What? -Well... Believe it or not, I know something that's going to happen. I can't explain how I know. I just do. And when I told your daddy, he got really mad. And he said I made the wrong choice.
same. there's just sth so poignant, intimate, inevitable, but so brave, so brave in the fabric of feelings. the music in the movie just brought you right to that point of realization and emotional state till the end without u knowing it

Not really. Even the winners aren't really winners. They witness their friends die in battle and they are forced to continue the war as they see people they love die in front of them.
in fact she cant "tell the future", she is aways living it, past present and future, at every moment, so those are not flashbacks nor flashforwards, but only "flashs"! And thats a fucking amazing concept and was showed perfectly through the movie!

It even shows the ages of “Hannah” in the credits 12 years old being the oldest before Hannah died and Amy Adams was 42 years old at the time she did this movie. Which means its possible she could’ve had a daughter as old as 24 years old if they wanted and it still would’ve been realistic.
The number 1 criticism of movies is that there too predictable. Louise’s interactions with her daughter and the revelation of who the father was was totally out of the blue.
Anyone else cry like a little bitch at the end of this movie? I'm glad I didn't see this in theaters because when 1:41 came on and I saw her playing with the baby it just all hit me right there and then. She knew her daughter would have cancer and she chose to have her anyway because she got to know her and she wanted to let her exist even though her life would be filled with suffering... then the dad was playing with the baby and I remembered how they got divorced when he found out she knew all along and didn't say anything and it just broke my heart.

This is where your story begins. The day they departed. Despite knowing the journey... and where it leads... I EMBRACE IT. And I welcome every moment of it.
I don't recall anyone playing the kind of expert in the field that Amy played in this film. Even in the progression of this one while her knowledge was respected she was personally relegated to the background of the actions they took. Had she not been a character who was by nature a quiet person they would have considered her a possible problem and watched her more strictly. In her case she slipped under all of their personal radar in being far more proactive and possessing a self confidence that she did not advertise. Once she knew an answer she pursued it diligently and without hesitation. In all matters their underestimation of her played to her strengths.
Because she was a woman. No hubris to get in the way. I loved the scene where she sheds her suit and stands with her hand the glass. She's so small.... and courageous.
While an adaptation has been in development hell for years at this point, the book "The Sparrow" also has a linguist as the main character (and was also just a very good and thoughtful story).
The big question is, would we have the right to decide this? We know she will die. More or less quilted. Do we reward them or amuse ourselves with the 16 years? If we know that someone dies we could prepare ourselves, but the person does not. Thats not a simple question / decision. btw. nice avatar ;-)

Nessie Andrew it is a philosophical movie cause this movie shows how strong Louise was and how she kept going and how she didn’t tell to his “future” husband that their daughter is going to die..
Dude! I just saw it for the first time, and it literally did the same for me. More than anything, it made me see that the moment our mind realizes the largest difference, the greatest change occurs. I wish we could access this power now so badly.
this movie is criminally underrated. Probably people nowdays are so used to shitty sci-fi flicks that when something good comes out, they don't know how to react to it and deem it boring. This movie is not for everyone indeed, but it's still amazing

I am a high school physics teacher, and I use this movie and Interstellar to explain better parallel universes, black holes, and how time is not linear in another dimension. One of my students confessed me that she haven’t cried so much as she did watching this film. Her brother has passed away two years before of cancer, but she said that despite all her suffering and pain, she wouldn’t change anything if she could. I still cry every time I remember her!!
Oh, god. I feel so sad for your student's loss. I mean Of course, this movie has depicted the attachment so well that you gotta admit that every moment with your loved ones are precious and irrecoverable...
Arrival is such a masterpiece to me, kinda even feels like a gift to those who are watching the film. The cinematography for each shots, the drama, how the kuleshov effect has been implemented, the soundtrack, and amy adams performance will just make you cry. I'm embarrassed but happy to say that I was crying the whole time watching it, cause the whole film feels really more like an Art rather than just a form of entertainment.
I cry if I even just remember the movie riding the streetcar home. Any one who's ever lost someone very dear, and who's ever wondered if there's another way to be alive, or sentient, or vulnerable and loving without courting catastrophe, must cry when such questions are suspended before us. And Max Richter's music is like a jewel with all our feelings and questions entombed within. The immensity of "Arrival," and its great meaning for me, was not that it answered any questions, but that it reassures everyone who rides the same questions home everyday that we are on an authentic, realistic journey. We don't hear any literal answers in the story because they aren't a destination, nor does the passage of time define any literal journey. Life is the journey, I think the Octopods were saying, and Amy's character discovers long before the end that being alive with others is its own destination.
I can't explain why I think this is a great movie, and everyone looks at me like a raving lunatic, and all I want is to talk about how beautiful and brilliant this movie is.
Dont worry pal i have the same issue with my missus, she tried watching it whilst drunk once so obviously didnt get into it but i watched it whilst she was babysitting her nephews whilst stone cold sober... and i can honestly say its in my top 3 movies of all time.
Quite honestly one of the best movies I've seen this year... not entertaining in the same sense most movies are, but it really got me thinking and it's the first movie that made me cry in quite some time.
The beautiful thing about this movie for me wasn't necessarily the entertainment aspect, but rather the esoteric realm of the psychology of linguistics and open mindedness that we as humans tend to lack.

That was the most powerful part to me in the whole movie. That one question she asked him. I wonder if he would answered the same, if he knew what a loaded question that really was. Would you be willing to watch your child suffer through cancer? She knew what was going to happen and still accepted it as so. I've thought about if I could do the same thing. A very tough choice indeed.
This question alone is enough to make me break down and look at the stars hoping that I am not the only one who would physically vapourise at the thought of this being possible...

while i agree with the overall premis you are putting forward, it is important to keep in mind they didnt come here to do us a service, but rather to ask us for our help as they could use their language to know that they would need us in about 3000 years or so. but still, you are right. abbott shouldnt have died. felt so sorry for him :( kind of interesting though, to think about the fact that he knew all along he would die there and yet, he still did it and gave up his life for the survival of his species....
You're forgetting something. The Aliens DID come to help humans, yes it was so that in return humans could help the aliens, but the heptapods still chose to spread their knowledge across the globe, and share it with all different nations (hence their landing in twelve ships rather than just one). When one of the military guys asks why the aliens only give us a PIECE of the puzzle, Louise (Amy Adams) responds by saying: "What better way to make us work together for once?" The aliens knew that humans were a divided species that struggled with war and opposition, so the aliens choosing to give a little bit of technology to several different nations forced the world to work together, and it is shown in the future at some party that the world becomes unified. Yes the aliens needed a favor, but they also chose to help us more than they needed to

Time is non-linear as this picture portrays. In its all simplicity, it basically gives you an infinite possibility of past, present & future, you can even see alternate pasts, a life that you could have lived. Its the actions you're taking now that dictates which courses of future you're taking. Abott could have chosen the alternate future path where it could have lived, but it chose this path (to die) because that's what gives it meaning for it's existence. Powerful theory, think of it like a whole web of threads all connected leading to different outcomes; all branching out from different pasts, leading to different presents and different futures.

Haunting..breathtaking...hearing them breathe into the wind instruments as the camera glides over the pod...to our destiny.........this movie is so moving. I hope Amy Adams is recognized for her unbelievable way she can suck a movie goer into the very heart of her character. Such an incredible journey. The music, the movie, the whole thing from beginning to end. Just like the title of this video. Ugh it brings tears to my eyes. Just tried it. It is the same yes, in terms of structure. It does not make the actual same sound of course, but you can play it backwards and recognize it, which is already pretty amazing
Five years later this film still haunts me. I didn't understand it at the time, but when I caught up I realized it wasn't even a science fiction, though you go thinking that. It has such a powerful and sad ending, that stays with you. Everytime I hear Max Richter's theme, i'm transported back and locked on to Amy Adams character. All I can say is this film is very underrated and if not now will be considered a classic for years to come.
So wonderful, the music and the movie. Many layers of meaning. It gives us much to think about. So very sad and so very happy at the same time, much as life itself is. Now and then a movie comes along that drives right to the depths of our human existence, and Arrival does just that.
A year ago today I lost my everything. In one moment of carelessness that compounded for a week or so, I ruined my life. Now it's far too late to save. How many of you have the same wishes...How many of you feel so alone despite being in a room full of people. How many of you don't know your purpose and don't think you have one. How many of you, think your not beautiful Well let me tell you something, I couldn't care less what you have been told by some random haters who know nothing about you. You are beautiful, you have something that make you unique, makes you, well you. Life is hard, its difficult, it can be hell. But don't focus only on the negative, because life is also beautiful, gorgeous, amazing. You don't have to be perfect, You don't have to wear a mask every single day. You don't need the right body, voice, eyes, smile, the right talents or lifestyle. And I'm not talking health here, I mean the very things that make you a person. Let me try to explain. I had a friend who tried smoking, who bullied other kids, who didnt do homework, only to fit in. Deep down he hated himself. He had no confidence, he didn't know who he was. And ironically, many people, especially kids and teens do that. Wearing this mask, because they want to be accepted, want to be loved. If you're that person today, then please listen. People will always find a reason to hate you, not everyone will accept you. And I know that must be hard to hear but its cold hard truth. But do you know what else is true, Some people will. Not for the mask you wear, Not for this facade or act. They'll love all of you or try to. With all your perks and flaws, with all your mistakes and failures. And if you feel like life is pointless and you'll never get over depression or something that just blocks you from being happy, living your life. Then I ask you to open your eyes. There are people in this very place, who felt exactly the same way....Teachers, Students, Friends, Family. In here, Out there, Everywhere. I would know, I was one of them. I don't have all the answers. the opinions of people who don't know me, are simply that..opinions. simply because someone doesn't like me, it doesn't mean I'm any less beautiful, any less....Human . You have the ability to be the best version of yourself. And no one can take that ability away. Some of you want to be NBA superstars, and I honestly believe that you can, you can be that. Some of you want to be doctors, lawyers, even politicians. So what is stopping you? Some of you want to be singers but are too scared to sing. I know how that feels, but let me ask you, if you knee that one day you would stand on a stage, sing in front of a crowds of thousands of people who sing along and dance along. Wouldn't it be worth it. Let me put it this way, If you are scared to do it, then do it scared. Fear is an illusion anyways, So let's Recap, You are beautiful, You have purpose, Your worth isn't defines by opinions or People, but you alone. My twin brother has gone and died in 2022. I miss him and our memories. This music inspires me to think of him. There'll never be someone like him in my life again. I find comfort in listening to this film score! I just find it hard to believe he's gone! RIP, Mark!
The scene near the end where Louise rises in the black-shale colored pod and enters the alien atmosphere without any suit evokes a very heavenly feeling. She is weightless and every detail of her hair and face is sharp and flowing. There is primal wonder and alertness on her face that has been reduced to utter nakedness from the presence of pure white light in that place. Her face is blanched white and child-like from the higher light and presence, yet she slowly regains her composure, and her mature intelligence is there. All this is consistent with the nature of heaven in that in that place our senses and abilities become many times more acute. When she entered this place it also took her a moment to be able to breath in that atmosphere, which is true of every society of heaven. In each society of heaven the atmosphere is composed of its quality of love and use, and one must be in harmony with those qualities to be there. Of course it could be that they were representing the different natural atmospherics of that place, but it still works as an allegory particularly in that it was a very spiritual experience. Louise speaks with the enormous aliens not fully understanding what they are saying but yearning to understand more, which she will in time. She asks the alien how it knows the future and the alien tells her that ‘you too know the future’, and it is later revealed that she does understand the past and future as the story all comes together. Arrival demonstrates allegories of heaven and spiritual/religious themes in several ways. I will use the movie as a spring board to elucidate some of these themes and how they relate to spiritual principle. Louise in the end understands the past and future and the meaning of her life. This makes her like a prophet particularly in that her actions are critical in working with the aliens to save the aliens and earth. For they tell her that they will need the people of earth 3000 years in the future. The goal of the aliens, which Louise is instrumental in helping them to accomplish, is to bring cooperation and greater peace among the peoples of earth. It is a universal principle of life that no-one is allowed to see the future for that would compromise freedom. We can sometimes see in hindsight the providence of God but in the moment we must be free to choose from ourself, for this is what llows our soul to transform in the process of regeneration. Even with Louise she only understands the future in the moment she needs to act and it takes great discernment on her part. The circumstance I just described tells us something profound about the nature of God and the prophets. Part of God’s infinite wisdom and omnipresence is that he is present to the past, the future and the present at the same time in the spiritual world. The wisdom of the aliens represents this as they have great sight into the future as demonstrated by their awareness that 3000 years in the future they will need humanity. The capabilities of the Aliens is similar to the abilities of the ‘bulk beings’ in Interstellar. They have the ability to know the future and wisdom to guide earth to a safe future, but they need humanity to work with them; humans are essential to them to accomplish the good they seek. This speaks to the principle that the relationship between God and man is reciprocal. This is an extremely valuable quality of God to take in. It doesn’t make God any less omnipotent; it does make him a lot closer. God has no needs except one - to be of use. Love is expressed through use. Modern religion to a large extent does not value the reciprocity between God and man enough. Too often God is overbearing and everything has to be taken to him. Perhaps some of this comes from the Catholic church taking all authority to itself in the past, some from the false doctrine of the protestants of Salvation by faith alone, and some by fearful fire and brimstone teaching. But God does not change us by unilateral means - we have to cooperate from our own will in the process. This self agency in the relationship is very healing to understand for a lot of people who feel anger at religion. Movies like this express essential Biblical ideas but a lot of people don’t see that they are Bibical truths. The depiction of Louise as prophet give us an interesting allegory of the immense wisdom of God. In contemplating the whole scope of the Bible we see that the prophets of the Old Testament were given awareness of events to come many hundreds of years before they were to be; and much later in the gospels these events come to be by the life of Jesus. This means God had awareness from the great past and used prophets from the Old Testament to express it. Also, the disciples in the New Testament foretell events of the future. Similarly, (although it is all condenced into one womans life) Louis was given memories of her future daughter and her daughters death, and at the same time she was given awareness of the Aliens message to the world. She gradually understood what she had to do to serve the Aliens purpose. Like the Bible, (and so many other stories) Arrival is a story of redemption both for Louise and for Humanity. Louise was redeemed in her great grief of the early death of her daughter. At the end we see her life is restored by her love with Ian, and that they will have a child. Swedenborg Writes in His “Spiritual Diary” which tells of his many particular experiences in heaven: The very telling result of this is that everyone who comes into the spiritual world can speak with everyone else there, no matter what part of earth they are from, or if they are from another planet. There is common language in the spiritual world because of this principle that the mind is inherently founded in the affections. The mind is the articulator of what is in the soul, and so affections are the base of language there and the language is common to all. In spite of missing the point that speech, sound, and writing are connected, Arrival still expresses an allegory for the universal language of heaven. In the end after speaking with the alien in its own atmosphere and comes back to the station understanding the Alien language all comes together for Louise and she exclaims to Ian, “I know how to speak their language”. It is later shown that she writes a book called “The Universal Language” - a great allegory for the universal language in heaven. The movie also gives great depiction of the spiritual value of memory. To remember deeply is a meditative and spiritual act, and this can evoke an internal memory of feeling the divine presence. This arises from internal innocence, which is the means of receiving God. (This has to do with what is called ‘remains’.) Louise has felt the memory (of the future) of the great grief of losing her young child to illness during her adult life, but this grief is lifted in seeing that her child also receives heavenly awareness, as evidenced by her creating clay models of the aliens in her child's play, and in the memory of her daughter reminding her of the idea of ‘unity in diversity’ that helps to save the world. In the end Louise sees the whole meaning of her life and with this awareness has no need to change anything. This also is an allegory of heaven in that Swedenborg tells we are given a review of our whole life after death, and if heavenly we are able to let go of earth life and enter a much greater one. Ian, Louise's partner in studying the aliens and future husband, feels great love inspite of his scientific nature and they come together as a conjugal pair meant for each other from the beginning. When she asks him, “if you knew the future would you change anything”, he says, “I would express my feelings more often”; showing that he also has come into a more internal place where their mind and feelings are in harmony. Swedenborg tells that there is marriage in heaven and that conjugal pairs who have not met each other on earth meet in heaven as if by accident but on seeing each other both have an inward awareness of ‘he is mine, and I am his’, and they know each other with a great love. The end of the movie gives us a sense of salvation; it gives the message that life in heaven is blessed happiness, in spite of, and because of the trials we go through here. The tragedy that Louise suffers in the death of her child is contained and understood in the love of God. Everything that happened was by the providence of God and in the end she learned to trust in God. The movie itself never mentions God but He is implicit in these principles. Of great impotance, it further shows at the end that the highest happiness comes from ‘true conjugal love’, and that this love comes from the divine and requires development inner skills and inner innocence. It is little known that there is conjugal love in heaven, but Swedenborg tells that this is the highest love in heaven and the very basis of heaven, and movies very often uphold this theme. The family unit and marriage love is the basis of society on earth and correspondingly in a higher way in heaven also. It is the nature of heaven that this state of happiness is ever increasing for eternernity, otherwise familiarity and stagnation would occur. The end of the movie eulogizes conjugal love as the epitome of happiness. In love truly conjugal the expereinces of love with ones mate is spontaneuosly filled with the feeling of its destiny; this feeling fills the moment with a blessed happiness in the heart and the body that can barely be contained. This is expressed in the movie. What is spiritual ‘looks to the eternal’. Conjugal love is the highest spiritual love in heaven, and is the root from which all other loves spring.
This movie is profoundly beautiful... this music stirs my soul...when she says "come back to me" when her baby starts crying in the hospital, then she says come back to me when her child died...

Interstellar and Arrival are very much alike, they both delve into a part of sci-fi that hasn't really been explored yet. Both in completely different ways however scientifically they tried to obey as many laws of physics as possible but also explored theoretical physics. Are you saying that at the end of interstellar you didn't think about science and that there is still so much undiscovered. Both were equally as good and will go down to me, as the two best sci-fi films to be made.

And then they get divorced. It renders that statement completely unimpressive.

+Emre.D wouldn't say unimpressive. He truly did love her and he didn't leave her only because the love faded, but because she kept the fact that their only child would succumb to cancer, and she saw how everything would go without telling Ian about it. He felt deceived.
I don't think she kept that information from her husband. She actually told him and he left because he thought that she chose to have a baby even though she knew that their kid would die.
Here are the lines from that scene:

-Oh, Hannah, honey, your daddy didn't leave you. You're gonna see him this weekend.
-He doesn't look at me the same way anymore.
-It's my fault. I told him something that he wasn't ready to hear.

same. there's just sth so poignant, intimate, inevitable, but so brave, so brave in the fabric of feelings. the music in the movie just brought you right to that point of realization and emotional state till the end without u knowing it

in fact she cant "tell the future", she is aways living it, past present and future, at every moment, so those are not flashbacks nor flashforwards, but only "flashs"! And thats a fucking amazing concept and was showed perfectly through the movie!

It even shows the ages of “Hannah” in the credits 12 years old being the oldest before Hannah died and Amy Adams was 42 years old at the time she did this movie. Which means its possible she could’ve had a daughter as old as 24 years old if they wanted and it still would’ve been realistic.
The number 1 criticism of movies is that there too predictable. Louise’s interactions with her daughter and the revelation of who the father was was totally out of the blue.
Anyone else cry like a little bitch at the end of this movie? I'm glad I didn't see this in theaters because when 1:41 came on and I saw her playing with the baby it just all hit me right there and then. She knew her daughter would have cancer and she chose to have her anyway because she got to know her and she wanted to let her exist even though her life would be filled with suffering... then the dad was playing with the baby and I remembered how they got divorced when he found out she knew all along and didn't say anything and it just broke my heart.

One of my favorite things about this movie is how the language expert is the one who speaks the softest and is the best listener.
and how the language expert was the protagonist! when was the last time that happened?
I don't recall anyone playing the kind of expert in the field that Amy played in this film. Even in the progression of this one while her knowledge was respected she was personally relegated to the background of the actions they took. Had she not been a character who was by nature a quiet person they would have considered her a possible problem and watched her more strictly. In her case she slipped under all of their personal radar in being far more proactive and possessing a self confidence that she did not advertise. Once she knew an answer she pursued it diligently and without hesitation. In all matters their underestimation of her played to her strengths.
Because she was a woman. No hubris to get in the way. I loved the scene where she sheds her suit and stands with her hand the glass. She's so small.... and courageous.
While an adaptation has been in development hell for years at this point, the book "The Sparrow" also has a linguist as the main character (and was also just a very good and thoughtful story).

I am a high school physics teacher, and I use this movie and Interstellar to explain better parallel universes, black holes, and how time is not linear in another dimension. One of my students confessed me that she haven’t cried so much as she did watching this film. Her brother has passed away two years before of cancer, but she said that despite all her suffering and pain, she wouldn’t change anything if she could. I still cry every time I remember her!!

Arrival is such a masterpiece to me, kinda even feels like a gift to those who are watching the film. The cinematography for each shots, the drama, how the kuleshov effect has been implemented, the soundtrack, and amy adams performance will just make you cry. I'm embarrassed but happy to say that I was crying the whole time watching it, cause the whole film feels really more like an Art rather than just a form of entertainment.

I cry if I even just remember the movie riding the streetcar home. Any one who's ever lost someone very dear, and who's ever wondered if there's another way to be alive, or sentient, or vulnerable and loving without courting catastrophe, must cry when such questions are suspended before us. And Max Richter's music is like a jewel with all our feelings and questions entombed within.
The immensity of "Arrival," and its great meaning for me, was not that it answered any questions, but that it reassures everyone who rides the same questions home everyday that we are on an authentic, realistic journey. We don't hear any literal answers in the story because they aren't a destination, nor does the passage of time define any literal journey. Life is the journey, I think the Octopods were saying, and Amy's character discovers long before the end that being alive with others is its own destination.
I can't explain why I think this is a great movie, and everyone looks at me like a raving lunatic, and all I want is to talk about how beautiful and brilliant this movie is.
Dont worry pal i have the same issue with my missus, she tried watching it whilst drunk once so obviously didnt get into it but i watched it whilst she was babysitting her nephews whilst stone cold sober... and i can honestly say its in my top 3 movies of all time.

That was the most powerful part to me in the whole movie. That one question she asked him. I wonder if he would answered the same, if he knew what a loaded question that really was. Would you be willing to watch your child suffer through cancer? She knew what was going to happen and still accepted it as so. I've thought about if I could do the same thing. A very tough choice indeed.

You're forgetting something. The Aliens DID come to help humans, yes it was so that in return humans could help the aliens, but the heptapods still chose to spread their knowledge across the globe, and share it with all different nations (hence their landing in twelve ships rather than just one). When one of the military guys asks why the aliens only give us a PIECE of the puzzle, Louise (Amy Adams) responds by saying:
"What better way to make us work together for once?" The aliens knew that humans were a divided species that struggled with war and opposition, so the aliens choosing to give a little bit of technology to several different nations forced the world to work together, and it is shown in the future at some party that the world becomes unified. Yes the aliens needed a favor, but they also chose to help us more than they needed to

Time is non-linear as this picture portrays. In its all simplicity, it basically gives you an infinite possibility of past, present & future, you can even see alternate pasts, a life that you could have lived. Its the actions you're taking now that dictates which courses of future you're taking. Abott could have chosen the alternate future path where it could have lived, but it chose this path (to die) because that's what gives it meaning for it's existence. Powerful theory, think of it like a whole web of threads all connected leading to different outcomes; all branching out from different pasts, leading to different presents and different futures.

Just tried it. It is the same yes, in terms of structure. It does not make the actual same sound of course, but you can play it backwards and recognize it, which is already pretty amazing
Five years later this film still haunts me. I didn't understand it at the time, but when I caught up I realized it wasn't even a science fiction, though you go thinking that. It has such a powerful and sad ending, that stays with you. Everytime I hear Max Richter's theme, i'm transported back and locked on to Amy Adams character. All I can say is this film is very underrated and if not now will be considered a classic for years to come.

As a grown man who seen several of sad yet beautiful movies, I cried my eyes out after watching this. I was ugly crying man...
So wonderful, the music and the movie. Many layers of meaning. It gives us much to think about. So very sad and so very happy at the same time, much as life itself is. Now and then a movie comes along that drives right to the depths of our human existence, and Arrival does just that.

Let me try to explain. I had a friend who tried smoking, who bullied other kids, who didnt do homework, only to fit in. Deep down he hated himself. He had no confidence, he didn't know who he was. And ironically, many people, especially kids and teens do that. Wearing this mask, because they want to be accepted, want to be loved. If you're that person today, then please listen. People will always find a reason to hate you, not everyone will accept you. And I know that must be hard to hear but its cold hard truth. But do you know what else is true, Some people will. Not for the mask you wear, Not for this facade or act. They'll love all of you or try to. With all your perks and flaws, with all your mistakes and failures. And if you feel like life is pointless and you'll never get over depression or something that just blocks you from being happy, living your life. Then I ask you to open your eyes. There are people in this very place, who felt exactly the same way....Teachers, Students, Friends, Family. In here, Out there, Everywhere. I would know, I was one of them. I don't have all the answers.

The scene near the end where Louise rises in the black-shale colored pod and enters the alien atmosphere without any suit evokes a very heavenly feeling. She is weightless and every detail of her hair and face is sharp and flowing. There is primal wonder and alertness on her face that has been reduced to utter nakedness from the presence of pure white light in that place. Her face is blanched white and child-like from the higher light and presence, yet she slowly regains her composure, and her mature intelligence is there. All this is consistent with the nature of heaven in that in that place our senses and abilities become many times more acute.
When she entered this place it also took her a moment to be able to breath in that atmosphere, which is true of every society of heaven. In each society of heaven the atmosphere is composed of its quality of love and use, and one must be in harmony with those qualities to be there. Of course it could be that they were representing the different natural atmospherics of that place, but it still works as an allegory particularly in that it was a very spiritual experience. Louise speaks with the enormous aliens not fully understanding what they are saying but yearning to understand more, which she will in time. She asks the alien how it knows the future and the alien tells her that ‘you too know the future’, and it is later revealed that she does understand the past and future as the story all comes together.
Arrival demonstrates allegories of heaven and spiritual/religious themes in several ways. I will use the movie as a spring board to elucidate some of these themes and how they relate to spiritual principle. Louise in the end understands the past and future and the meaning of her life. This makes her like a prophet particularly in that her actions are critical in working with the aliens to save the aliens and earth. For they tell her that they will need the people of earth 3000 years in the future. The goal of the aliens, which Louise is instrumental in helping them to accomplish, is to bring cooperation and greater peace among the peoples of earth. It is a universal principle of life that no-one is allowed to see the future for that would compromise freedom. We can sometimes see in hindsight the providence of God but in the moment we must be free to choose from ourself, for this is what llows our soul to transform in the process of regeneration. Even with Louise she only understands the future in the moment she needs to act and it takes great discernment on her part.
The circumstance I just described tells us something profound about the nature of God and the prophets. Part of God’s infinite wisdom and omnipresence is that he is present to the past, the future and the present at the same time in the spiritual world. The wisdom of the aliens represents this as they have great sight into the future as demonstrated by their awareness that 3000 years in the future they will need humanity. The capabilities of the Aliens is similar to the abilities of the ‘bulk beings’ in Interstellar. They have the ability to know the future and wisdom to guide earth to a safe future, but they need humanity to work with them; humans are essential to them to accomplish the good they seek. This speaks to the principle that the relationship between God and man is reciprocal. This is an extremely valuable quality of God to take in. It doesn’t make God any less omnipotent; it does make him a lot closer. God has no needs except one - to be of use. Love is expressed through use. Modern religion to a large extent does not value the reciprocity between God and man enough. Too often God is overbearing and everything has to be taken to him. Perhaps some of this comes from the Catholic church taking all authority to itself in the past, some from the false doctrine of the protestants of Salvation by faith alone, and some by fearful fire and brimstone teaching. But God does not change us by unilateral means - we have to cooperate from our own will in the process. This self agency in the relationship is very healing to understand for a lot of people who feel anger at religion. Movies like this express essential Biblical ideas but a lot of people don’t see that they are Bibical truths.
The depiction of Louise as prophet give us an interesting allegory of the immense wisdom of God. In contemplating the whole scope of the Bible we see that the prophets of the Old Testament were given awareness of events to come many hundreds of years before they were to be; and much later in the gospels these events come to be by the life of Jesus. This means God had awareness from the great past and used prophets from the Old Testament to express it. Also, the disciples in the New Testament foretell events of the future. Similarly, (although it is all condenced into one womans life) Louis was given memories of her future daughter and her daughters death, and at the same time she was given awareness of the Aliens message to the world. She gradually understood what she had to do to serve the Aliens purpose. Like the Bible, (and so many other stories) Arrival is a story of redemption both for Louise and for Humanity. Louise was redeemed in her great grief of the early death of her daughter. At the end we see her life is restored by her love with Ian, and that they will have a child.
Swedenborg Writes in His “Spiritual Diary” which tells of his many particular experiences in heaven:
The very telling result of this is that everyone who comes into the spiritual world can speak with everyone else there, no matter what part of earth they are from, or if they are from another planet. There is common language in the spiritual world because of this principle that the mind is inherently founded in the affections. The mind is the articulator of what is in the soul, and so affections are the base of language there and the language is common to all. In spite of missing the point that speech, sound, and writing are connected, Arrival still expresses an allegory for the universal language of heaven. In the end after speaking with the alien in its own atmosphere and comes back to the station understanding the Alien language all comes together for Louise and she exclaims to Ian, “I know how to speak their language”. It is later shown that she writes a book called “The Universal Language” - a great allegory for the universal language in heaven.
The movie also gives great depiction of the spiritual value of memory. To remember deeply is a meditative and spiritual act, and this can evoke an internal memory of feeling the divine presence. This arises from internal innocence, which is the means of receiving God. (This has to do with what is called ‘remains’.) Louise has felt the memory (of the future) of the great grief of losing her young child to illness during her adult life, but this grief is lifted in seeing that her child also receives heavenly awareness, as evidenced by her creating clay models of the aliens in her child's play, and in the memory of her daughter reminding her of the idea of ‘unity in diversity’ that helps to save the world. In the end Louise sees the whole meaning of her life and with this awareness has no need to change anything. This also is an allegory of heaven in that Swedenborg tells we are given a review of our whole life after death, and if heavenly we are able to let go of earth life and enter a much greater one. Ian, Louise's partner in studying the aliens and future husband, feels great love inspite of his scientific nature and they come together as a conjugal pair meant for each other from the beginning. When she asks him, “if you knew the future would you change anything”, he says, “I would express my feelings more often”; showing that he also has come into a more internal place where their mind and feelings are in harmony. Swedenborg tells that there is marriage in heaven and that conjugal pairs who have not met each other on earth meet in heaven as if by accident but on seeing each other both have an inward awareness of ‘he is mine, and I am his’, and they know each other with a great love.
The end of the movie gives us a sense of salvation; it gives the message that life in heaven is blessed happiness, in spite of, and because of the trials we go through here. The tragedy that Louise suffers in the death of her child is contained and understood in the love of God. Everything that happened was by the providence of God and in the end she learned to trust in God. The movie itself never mentions God but He is implicit in these principles. Of great impotance, it further shows at the end that the highest happiness comes from ‘true conjugal love’, and that this love comes from the divine and requires development inner skills and inner innocence. It is little known that there is conjugal love in heaven, but Swedenborg tells that this is the highest love in heaven and the very basis of heaven, and movies very often uphold this theme. The family unit and marriage love is the basis of society on earth and correspondingly in a higher way in heaven also. It is the nature of heaven that this state of happiness is ever increasing for eternernity, otherwise familiarity and stagnation would occur. The end of the movie eulogizes conjugal love as the epitome of happiness. In love truly conjugal the expereinces of love with ones mate is spontaneuosly filled with the feeling of its destiny; this feeling fills the moment with a blessed happiness in the heart and the body that can barely be contained. This is expressed in the movie. What is spiritual ‘looks to the eternal’. Conjugal love is the highest spiritual love in heaven, and is the root from which all other loves spring.
