For the last year or so we have been on a smart electricity tariff that varies every half hour of the day, it is called Octopus Agile and I think it has saved us a lot of money! Occasionally, Octopus Agile gives you a negative electricity rate.... meaning that they would pay you to use electricity.
On Saturday 13th April, we got paid to use electricity for over 5 hours in the middle of the day, for some of that time, nearly 10p per kWh.
So... we tried out best to use as much as we could...
This video is about how we did, how much we were paid, and what this means for the future of the electricity system... spoiler... it means that electricity in the future could be very cheap!
Great video! More public awareness needed around this 👍
Thanks mate!
It's the way to go - make use of what we can when it's available. I look forward to a time when this is normal, and having the smarts all fully integrate is just plug and play.
Absolutely!
75 pence plus the value of the electricity you used (over and above normal usage) is a quite reasonable amount. Have to love this active price plunging and pay to use brought about by smart tariffs and Octopus E. For me, the 75p alone is more than I actually value of what I consume during the summer months. It is also a wonderful way as you have suggested, of changing peoples habits for usage and to become aware of what they use and when. Now, if one had a battery, it could be charged in those hours and rake in even more savings.
Hello - thanks for commenting, it is a meaningful amount and the electricity I used would have had a cost the next day so a more significant saving. It would be interesting to see Octopus' stats on how many people did something similar and how much electricity we used during that plunge!
@@TomBray-LowCarbonLifestyle Yes, the one thing I haven't seen and would like to, is the nation stats on take up and cost savings for Octopus as well as customers. Maybe you can ask them via your blog?
You're fine with extension cables as long as they are fully unwound #induction - hope your heat pump enjoys visitors today, I would have come for a look but off to Everything Electric in Harrogate...!
Had 13 people come today, which was good! Cleaning the house took some effort though…!
Yup I've melted my dad's extension cable with a constant 10A overnight doing that. Think there was poor contact with dust and grime in one of the extensions.
So ive got a heavy duty 15m cable in my boot now, has much longer contactors on the plug 🔌
Yeah you need a 13A lead, preferably with 2.5mm wires.. and always best to check terminations are tight, preferably have a resistance check done with meter or PAT tester. Should be fine then, I use them regularly for solar charging..
I guess an extension cable can be helpful in an emergency, but not for everyday charging. Although if we had a chunky extension as Mike suggests, maybe fine....!
@@TomBray-LowCarbonLifestyle it wouldn't be so difficult to permanently extend the granny lead really, crimp wires of the same size and house in a Wago box. There's also a company in Chard who makes bespoke leads up for you.. they made me an MG4 v2L lead and it was excellent.
Whilst there is a cost to having a home EV charger installation, this needs to be part of our schema for decarbonising our personal transport. The benefits would be saving more on a plunge pricing event 😆
50kw
Hello - sorry is this referring to something in particular?
@@TomBray-LowCarbonLifestyle yes you asked in your video how much electricity could you ask as in the watcher how much power you could use, my answer is 50kw
@@dama054 Wow, you could use 50 kW at home? That is a significant amount!
@@TomBray-LowCarbonLifestyle I have a Nissan leaf 2013 and 70kws of home storage the only thing that limits me is my 63amp grid service
Oh dear! Charging ev using extension cable..
It is ok if It the extension is rated high enough. So 13amp sustained rather than 10amp
That is helpful to understand, maybe an upgrade is needed!
