- Lyrics:
She came from Greece, she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College
That's where I caught her eye
She told me that her Dad was loaded
I said "In that case I'll have rum and coca-cola
She said "fine"
And then in 30 seconds time she said
"I want to live like common people
I want to do whatever common people do
I want to sleep with common people
I want to sleep with common people like you"
Well what else could I do?
I said "I'll see what I can do"
I took her to a supermarket
I don't know why
but I had to start it somewhere
so it started there
I said "pretend you've got no money"
but she just laughed
and said "oh you're so funny"
I said "Yeah
Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here
Are you sure
you want to live like common people
you want to see whatever common people see
you want to sleep with common people
you want to sleep with common people like me?"
But she didn't understand
she just smiled and held my hand
Rent a flat above a shop
Cut your hair and get a job
Smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school
But still you'll never get it right
'cos when you're laid in bed at night
watching roaches climb the wall
if you called your dad he could stop it all
yeah
You'll never live like common people
You'll never do whatever common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
and then dance and drink and screw
because there's nothing else to do
Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get you through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh along although they're laughing at you
and the stupid things that you do
because you think that poor is cool
Like a dog lying in a corner
they will bite you and never warn you
Look out
they'll tear your insides out
'cos everybody hates a tourist
especially one who thinks
it's all such a laugh
yeah and the chip stain's grease
will come out in the bath
You will never understand
how it feels to live your life
with no meaning or control
and with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
and they burn so bright
whilst you can only wonder why
Rent a flat above a shop
Cut your hair and get a job
Smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school
But still you'll never get it right
'cause when you're laid in bed at night
watching roaches climb the wall
if you called your dad he could stop it all
yeah
You'll never live like common people
You'll never do whatever common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
and then dance and drink and screw
'because there's nothing else to do
I want to live with common people like you.....
Sound guy was an ex violin player who always got lost in the mix.
1994, 1995 and 1996 were some of the best years of my life. The best music, the best drugs and the best times a teenager could ever wish for.
Pulp were legendary. I witnessed them twice in the mid 90's.
Sheffield represent.
Look at the crowd go nuts. If this was played now everyone would be stood still with their camera phone out trying to get a steady shot.
Agreed. People are so lost.
Completely disagree, watch this song live from Reading 2011, not one person was stood still in that crowd.
Not sure everyone had any camera phone in Glastonbury on '95, dude... But I agree
probably one of the best song ever
Abslutely incredible lyric performed with heart.
...and the crowd (mainly middle-class) sang along with 'The Common People' then many went home to vote Tory /Lib-Dem: surely one of pop music's greatest ironical moments. ps a brilliant (best yet) download by FRLKEAN
laugh along even though they 're laughing at you (8) .. and the stupid things that you do..
@Tommyfazz The crowd that year was far from middle class. The travelers pulled down 50 metres of fence at the stone circle. It was a free for all. No ticket needed.
Security were actually opening the fence up to let people in safely and thwart the dodgy guys who'd made tunnels and were charging £30 to use them.
It really was glorious chaos that year.
I missed this gig anyway. Was at Eat static in the new dance tent. Awesome!!!
y existe esa Gente jsjsjsss
That is a tribute the working class!

The violin sounds great in this version, louder than in the album. I like it :D
This is one of my favourite songs and bands. Thanks for posting it. Brilliant song, witty, observant and very sad and bitter, too. Jarvis Cocker is great.
One of the great glastonbury headline performances.
No-one can dance like JC.
grandissimi!!!!
15 years to make it, the Jarvis Cocker story is worthy of a movie, awesome tune and performance
Great song.
Violin - bad idea.
it needed another accompanying string
japanese all come to the same thing
Lot of violin up in here
so strange, i speak english as an american, but can only understand half of what he says, the area he's from must have a distinct accent.
tubeberk08 im from greece and i understand every word lol
Nick Tryfonas it might cause im from greece and i have a thrist for knowledge
hahaha!
tubeberk08 just like the accents we have here in us. north eastern accents, southern accents, cajun, south western, north western, mid-west accents. same in england... depending which region you live in. btw, i'm a mexican-american, living in seattle... and i can understand him just fine, but that's probs bc i've watched loads of British television shows and english premier league football my whole life.
Sheffield
awesome,
written on a.. :-)
Thanks you for posting this. I have always thought this track was brilliant but the Glastonbury version is stunning! The part where the band really kicks in and the lights go up on the crowd is a great rock moment! I've posted a link to this video from my "bestmusicofalltime" blog at wordpress. Thanks again.
@edshift I was there at Glastonbury that year. I loved every minute of it!!! LOVED IT!! HAPPY DAYS!!!
Fab song,fab video ,thanks.
