It's an early version performed prior to the song being recorded in January of the the next year (1995). That goes some way to explaining to rusty-ness of the perfomance.
What the hell do you mean everything sucks as it did then and it more does now? The Rich are getting poorer, that's all. And the poor are dying just like in Charles Dicken's time.
I don't get why Jarvis isn't more famous and so.. hes seriously the best of them all.. seriously?????? hes sooo much better than mj and madonna etc, hes just, different class really!
I was there, raved about the tune for nearly a year before it came out. Funny hearing it back as it was nowhere near as impressive as the finished article but was still totally awesome.
i was there. this was one of the first times the song was performed live, if not the first, so forgive them that its not quite polished. the best live version is glasto '95 imo.
Yes, Jarvis, I understand, I'm one of the common people as well, I have an aversion to entitled behavior, this song spoke to me on a very personal level.
Don't knock it - it *is* still a work in progress, and I'm pretty sure it was one of the first times they'd tried it (and Underwear) in front of an audience. At this point, His'N'Hers had only been out a few months - they'd only just signed to Island!
Dave Laye me too. Don't remember much, though! Had to be recently reminded of several incidents by my friend who was with me and a lot more 'present' 😂
Lucy Newman . good lord Lucy, I hope you're not talking about illegal substance abuse. lol I was too poor the to afford more than a teenth of black for the weekend. hitchhiked there with my mate. a month after this my life changed and went in the army. still listen to pulp "I spy" everyday on my running tracks
You can see by comparing this to the version of 1995 like just few things can make the song great. Better singing, slightly better lyrics, more tempo and hit is here :-)
Amazing to see how unimpressed the audience are. And Jarvis starts out of tune for the first verse. Then watch a performance a few years later and see tens of thousands of people absolutely explode when he goes into the chorus and they all sing along. It's not just that the performance was more polished later, it's also that to a certain extent, the crowd have to be told that a song is great for them to appreciate it. So after they hear it on the radio all over the place and see other's loving it, their own minds can grasp how great it is more easily. Then they act like they always loved it from first hearing.
Because the last verse is always cut in the "radio" edit of the song. Which is a real shame, because that's the verse that really drives the point home.
sorry but I think that 2011 version is way better than this performance, here this song sounds strange and not like at the album, it even have that power
The innocence of the crowd is very endearing. Jarvis says Common People and the crowd don't go crazy
N Haliloglu I think this was the first time they played this song.
Only because the crowd is too fucking Rich just like You!
@@paulsavage5057 Um no
@@paulsavage5057 don’t be a fucking idiot
the crowd noise has been extracted from the recording?
Haha it's funny that nowadays if you play this song everyone knows the words, back then not even Jarvis knew the words

Fuzzy Dunlop, you sir, just made me decide that the wire boxset is getting binged starting now 👍
The story goes that this is first public performance of the song and the lyrics were written the night before.
New to me
I love this. Zero crowd reaction, no engagement, and in 1995 this was epic!
they were all mourning Kurt
Back when Jarvis was still a whiskey man before he switched to rum.

FOREVER THE BEST SONG IN EXISTANCE
"You've written one there" someone said that to him afterwards and it was a perfect statement
Great rendition...Jarvis has great range, confidence and integrity...never a Pulp fan proper, but when I listen to this all I hear is quality x
The rawness is great, brilliant from the get go even without all the polishing that came later
Quite promising. Bit of a tweak and I imagine this could do quite well.

No - Reading 2011. No comparison!
I love that this exists
Lovely casio sound
I was 14 when this happened, too young for my mum to let me go, but I saw them at Glastonbury 10 months later!
Yes, Jarvis, I understand, I'm one of the common people as well, I have an aversion to entitled behavior, this song spoke to me on a very personal level.

+Dave Laye lucky devil
drecksheep saw pulp, radiohead, manics, RHCP , cypress hill and loads others. long ago now tho

me too!
So in love w this song
This is a bit restrained but at least they have the violinist - what a talent he is!!!
Still so raw but love it!
4:09 He was lucky there. He nearly knocked his own glasses off. That would have been embarrassing!
And the next year they headlined glasto!!!
Beautiful mad of him
He only wrote the lyrics to this the night before
I JUDGE PEOPLE. PERIOD. IF THEY FIND JARVIS SEXY, THEY'RE WORTH A CHAT - EVEN A RELATIONSHIP. IF NOT, SILENT VIOLENCE.
Jarvis was one of the best singers of the 90s and a very intelligent man. Sadly, this was a bad day on too much whiskey.
Pure Energetic Rough … top
Diferent Class was launched in 1995.
That's a miracle?
MrFernoked realise it was five years ago but still the stupid
Are you stupid MrFernoked
This is cool but the 2 added guitars of the later versions give it more power. Plus Jarvis becomes a better dancer with time.
I was there …..
I was there! First festival
ANY ONE HAVE OR KNOW THE LYRICS OF THIS VERSION!?
It’s the same but slightly unfinished
You can see by comparing this to the version of 1995 like just few things can make the song great. Better singing, slightly better lyrics, more tempo and hit is here :-)
Is that Mark webber on guitar here before becoming a full member of the band the following year? He would only have been 23 at this gig.
With a bit of work this might be a hit.
Do u clean windows
Then move on 17 years wow what a difference!!!
Three Aaron Copland fans disliked.
Increíble
The thing is i live on the 8yhlol
drummer's side profiile kinda looks like a young shatner
you answered your own question there.
still inedit 1993 demo

I'll have a whisky and a coca cola thanks
omg why are some lyrics not in the MV

That was a car crash in slow motion.
is this richard ashcroft?
MrMegaduder no its jarvis cocker
Mark Webber aged 24
he is soooo coked up.
I don't
wow - you just have to think 'What an ungrateful bastard audience' lol
Sad to say this isnhistory
The lyrics were butchered
sorry but I think that 2011 version is way better than this performance, here this song sounds strange and not like at the album, it even have that power
this was before the album...
Emh... This is unfinished version and it is a way different that final. This was a test performance, what did pink floyd, and many others bands.
Tb be honest, that was a pretty shit performance when you consider what they and this song went on to. Jarivs is a legend though!
I think this might be the first step on my awakening to the reality of misogyny
?
@@eliuthayala9674 I know - can you believe it?? I can - some women are really annoying. Not me tho... 😁
This has nothing to do with gender, it's about class and money. I have no idea what you think it was about.
