My dog got injured on a walk once, fully gashed his leg open right up a hill, and i had another one too to sort out. I was panicking and trying to lift the dog and a couple who were walking came and helped, complete strangers but the bloke carried my dog back to my car so i could go to the vets. An absolute saviour 🙏

This is why you pack a first aid kit for human and pets. I carry shoes and socks for them. On a 12 mile hike one of my 5 dogs always gets a raw paw pad from running on sticks and such.

There is an amazing product called Ruff Rescue. It’s a sling. A couple of years ago we were on a hike and our full size 2 yr old doodle was bit by a rattle snake. We could see the road above us, we are in our late sixties at the time and both in good shape. I ran back to get the truck and my husband struggled to carry Otis to the road. All worked out well but we realized that had we been on one of our back country hikes it would have been super difficult to carry either of our full sized doodles out. Both my husband and I could carry our dogs in this sling. It can be worn on our back or chest. It folds very small and is light and easy to carry in a small backpack.

Pet Companies make paw pads that are made like shoes for our pup's. They work well a lot of hunter's use them on their dog's in the field. They're not that expensive and they work really well to protect there feet and pads. Ive used them before, it just takes a little while for them to get use to wearing them. It is actually pretty hilarious to watch the pup's get use to them. They do alot of high stepping and the actual clumsiness at first will bring a smile to your face every time. I would recommend them to anyone that takes the dog's hiking in the wild, they are worth it!

I have something like this too!! But it’s more of a backpack, harness kinda thing instead of a sling. It’s amazing. I’m a 5’1 small woman, and my dog is just under 100 pounds. He is a big malamute. We do tons of hikes in the middle of nowhere, and he did get hurt one time… not bad enough he couldn’t walk, but it made me think like oh if he did get injured we would be screwed. With the backpack thing, I can carry him… barely lmao hahaha. He’s heavy as hell. But at least I can get him out even though it’s a hell of a workout.

I trained therapy dogs as well as family dogs and the backpacks are part of my training methods. They are a great idea not only for carrying important items like you mentioned, but as a routine to training putting a mindset into the dog and goes towards specific purposes. They actually become proud of themselves when wearing the backpack when you go to take something out that you both use like water. It's' heartwarming to me when they get to that part, it's like when I take a therapy dog to a nursing home and they help an elderly person with something, the dogs just lap up the praise from them and almost seem to smile somehow. 😊

Of the infinite number of "things I love about dogs" their ability to move on after a setback is very near the top. One of our pups had to have his gall bladder out and the vet said we may lose him. She was only preparing us for what might be, but said she would do all she could. He came through the surgery well, and when he got back here to his farm, you couldn't see him for dust! If you or I had undergone a major surgery, we would naturally take it easy for a couple of days when we first got home from the hospital. Dogs don't think that way. Yesterday I was sick, today I feel better. Let's run!
I am glad your pup is better and back to having fun. Stay safe everyone!

Airlift Fido Pro. Turns your dog into a backpack. It is essentially an emergency harness that fits in a small pouch. Worth every penny!

Highly recommend pet parents of large dogs to purchase those emergency slings if you go for long hikes like these owners. They are well worth it.

*Tell someone where you’re going & expect to return.*
And always carry an emergency kit. Especially if you drift from the main trails. Wound care, water purifier, emergency blanket, tarp, crank charger/flashlight/alarm, fire steel & sleeping mat. Nuts, bars, beef jerky. All are light to carry. Can save lives.

Aw poor boy. So proud of you for being strong cause I can imagine just how sore tearing your paw would feel cause I was walking boy and he tore his paw and he couldn't fully stand on it for half a week. Took just over 13 days for it to heal and for him to be back running around after me lol

Im glad your baby is ok..i lost mine..he was a chow and shepherd mix..he stepped on a piece of glass and cut the main artery in his foot..i tried to wrap it up to stop the bleeding while taking him to the vet but it didn't help.. even surgery didn't save him.... this happened in my own back yard in our new apartment..

😢 A true nightmare of mine. I am so sorry!
I live in a very rural area, but our house was built on property that was once a bar and a restaurant.8 out of 10 times I cant go 4inches in the ground without hitting upon brick or glass pieces. Not to mention that plus everything else that one might find in a burn pit from burning trash! I worry about our animals getting hurt all the time and do what i can to keep it picked up. But I consider ourselves as being very lucky that nothing bad has occurred yet.

Fun fact about this video. IPOS lives in an very expensive city. If he moved 30 minutes away, he'd be able to pay his rent on time no problem. Every one of his recent woes are self-inflicted.

Thank you for posting this. Such good information. I’ve been a hiker since 1970s. It’s possible to carry a medium size dog out, but probably not a large dog or a person. For long hikes in more remote areas, you need to have enough people on the hike to send a couple of people to get help and someone to stay with the injured pet or person, plus extra water because of the extra time for the rescue.

I had the same thing happen to me but our dog just limped back to the car because he has four legs. We weren't super far away but we rested whenever we felt we had to just to make it easier on him. No problems.

You can make a couple of emergency booties that have built up very soft padding in the bottom of them. You can take a pair of pet snow booties and line the soul's with gauze and cotton to make it soft. Make sure they fit fairly tight around the leg . Also make a hard protected surface to place under paw to walk on, on the outside of boot. You can use a big table spoon . You put a 90° bend to make the bottom side of spoon as the part touching ground and spoon handle is placed on the back of his leg with spoon under foot facing forward. Toss a small roll of duct tape in your pack to tape top of boot, and bent spoon handle to the leg...
So when it's done correctly you have a spoon then heavily cotton padded boot slipped over injured paw and up the leg. Taped in place.
He will get used to it in a few minutes. At least you don't have to carry him. .
