- Join us as we eat the Gatsby submarine sandwich for lunch in Cape Town, South Africa at Miriam's Kitchen. Originating from the Cape Flats area of Cape Town the Gatsby Sandwich is named after 'The Great Gatsby' novel by author F. Scott Fitzgerald. Originally the Gatsby sandwich was basically large rolls filled with whatever was leftover from supper but in a restaurant today you'll typically find ingredients such as hot chips (French Fries), slap chips (fries with vinegar), achar and/or piri piri sauce and ingredients such as chargrilled steak, chicken, masala steak or pickled fish. It makes for a great budget meal if you're visiting Cape Town.

Gatsby Sandwich - Eating South African Food in Cape Town, South Africa Video Transcript:
What have we done?
Oh, what have we done?
Oh my gosh. Okay, so today we're in Cape Town and we wanted to try the Gatsby. This is a dish that apparently originated in the Cape Flats.
It is fast food so we thought hey let's order two half portions and then this behemoth of a meal arrived and I'm not entirely sure how we're going to eat all of this.
I don't think we can accurately portray just how big this is. It is huge. Put your hand out.
My hands. Tada.
Like this thing is enormous. It is like bigger than my head. This is the half portion.
This is way bigger than your head.
Imagine if we had gotten the full one. Like the bread would be out to here. Like, this is to feed a family. It is enough food to feed a group of friends and we're going to eat all of this. Just the two of us. Arggh!
Okay, so it is time introduce you to the Gatsby. Time to tuck into it but first basically it is just if you can imagine it is a massive submarine sandwich. Yeah. You can see it is shaped like a submarine.
If we actually went like that you can see that is probably what a large one looks like. Yes, that would be one large basically.
Maybe one large one.
And anyways yeah. Let's take a look and see what is inside. So it is filled with chips. That is the key ingredient. Every Gatsby has chips. Woah, look at how many chips there are.
And then the one that I got here is the Steak Masala so you can see there is a big generous chunk of steak. Big hunk of steak.
I noticed some lettuce at the bottom. There is a bit of salad in there as well. Yeah, there is a little bit of salad but is obviously at the very very bottom.
Yeah, and we noticed on the menu they had a whole bunch of fillings. You can get it with hotdog, sausage, eggs.
They had one with curry as well too. So many options.
You can get anything you want really. Alright, so let's actually go in for the first bite. Actually they just told us we're supposed to be eating this with our hands.
I got mine, I think there is barbecue and maybe like a bit of piri piri. That is like really spicy so you really taste the chips, you taste the steak and then of course there is not a lot of salad in there. I have to say. I do think there is some onions but my gosh. You know what this is like hangover food.
This is the ultimate hangover food when you have a you feel you're a lot more hungry than you actually are.
And not only that I kind of feel like this is the type of food that what was probably created by a ten year old. Mom, mom let's make a giant sandwich let's throw in some french fries, let's throw in some steak.
My gosh that is good. The Gatsby for the win.
Alright, so I'm already getting full eating Sam's chips. I haven't even touched mine. So let's have a look. I ordered the one with chips and cheese. Oh look at that and tomato sauce and piri piri spice on the chips and it also has salad.
So yeah. Oh my gosh. My goal is to try and finish at least one piece. It is so big it is hard to even pick up. Look at that.
Yours must be spicy? It is good. Well the tomato sauce is sweet so it balances out but seriously this is like carb overload. Bread and potatoes. Yeah, there is no way we each needed our own half one. We could have shared a half. We will try our best. Had we known. Had we known. We'll try our best to finish it.
My gosh. I don't even want to know how many calories are in that thing.
This is part of our Travel in South African video series showcasing South African food, South African culture and South African cuisine.
As a South African from Cape Town. I can confidently say that we chow a half with ease LOL
LOL, that is definitely impressive :)
True
I've never seen someone eat a gatsby with cutlery before 😂y'all WILD
Hahaha...our bad
Hey guys... Excellent video and review aswell. You guys did it justice I must say. The reason for the huge size of the Gatsby is because it originated as a peasant food for factory workers and laborers as a cheap way to feed themselves and their families. It has evolved over the years into something decadent and very satisfying. The full house steak is the big daddy of the Gatsby world, but another favorite is the polony and vienna(hotdog) option which was the OG peasant style Gatsby. Cheers and please come back to Cape Town. You guys are awesome
Thank you very much! Really appreciate the information you shared. We'd love to revisit Cape Town someday..
next time you must go to Cosy corner the best gasby in Cape Town
Oh, thanks for the recommendation! We'll remember that name :)
No really man you don't know WHAT you're missing. I have had Cosy Corner but Bona Fast Foods in grassy park is much better.
We ordered "The Torpedo" Gatsby. 3 full grown men and we couldn't finish it, there were some people outside the shop and we just gave it to them in the end. Was delicious but too big!!!
Admire your attempt! They are HUGE! Oh, I am craving one right now.
Those are insane! Love the reference to a ten year old kid coming up with it. What a crazy dish. Thanks for introducing us to these! Thomas
Thanks Thomas! Our jaws dropped when they brought it to the table.
You guys ate that gatsbys like pros...Some people here in Cape Town still struggle to grip a full gatsby like that
Thank you! We sure enjoyed it :)
Definitely eat a Gatsby with hands, but to make it a little easier eat a few chips(fries) off first, then grab and dig in!! :)
Thank you! That is a great tip. It is a bit tricky to pick it up with the chips sticking out at first.
So unfair! How do you keep your figure Audrey?!!! I get fat just watching your vids!!!!
LOL, I think I gain the weight for her. I envy her metabolism. She's actually really good at not overeating whereas I struggle a bit with that.
Do a detox and juice fasting.. Get BREVILLE BJ520 Model juicer...
Pradeep Rajkumar got a masticating juicer at home and usually buy a fresh green juice for lunch a couple of times during the week. Love juicing, sleep better, think clearer, more energy. It's definitely the way to go!
yes thanks Spoo.. I do it for detox...
Please check out my instagram for the pics...

I'll be having one of these tonight for supper. Mouth is now watering lekker! My bliksem!
Great to hear!
Oh my gosh us South Africans can be real giembas sometimes joh
We're still thinking of this sandwich!
•Kylie Lourens you mean capetonians right our culture is different than yours
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What does giemba means?
@@Nonjola greedy or someone that eats a lot
Seriously, the people at Mariam's Kitchen should have told you that you could share half a gatsby between the two of you. Rather cheeky and sneaky not to do so.
Thanks! It is good to know. Hopefully anybody watching this will realize how big the portions are...haha
Hey, Im from Cape Town, and it's not sneaky, this meal is in fact meant for sharing and generally cut in 4 or 3 pieces. It's actually very common for people to order half portions, which is why fast food restaurants don't question your order unless you ask. Some fast food places sell Gatsby's at 1,5 metres in length!
Who the heck even puts one on a plate? And a knife and fork? Find a REAL joint!! Because I dunno what that is.
Normally served in tinfoil or something like that?
Wrapped in paper, and you squish it down and eat with your hands. And they are intended to feed a group of people. You'd never eat a half by yourself. They are a way of cheaply feeding a group of people, so you'd share the cost between 4 or more people and then ask for it to be cut in that many pieces to share. A steak Gatsby is also an 'expensive' one. Usually they are chips, polony, salad, tomato, and tomato sauce.
Holy that looks good! I hope my food reviews from Vietnam are as good as you two one day🍜👀👌
Thanks! Best wishes with your channel :)
fuck it..shouldnt have watched this at 02:00 am in the morning....nice vid btw
Thank you! LOL, hope you got something nice to eat.
Best food to have with your buddies especially after night of clubbing, then wash it down with a Iron Brew, Double'O or the Ginger beer...
Oh, it sure is. I'll go with a ginger beer :)
@samuel your technique for eating gatsby is very impressive for a first timer! Glad to have you in CT enjoying one of our best foods!
Thank you! That means a lot. We sure enjoyed it and many other tasty bites we had in CT.
For anyone who doesn't know how big it really is, it's a long french roll which are then cut into however many hand held pieces of your choice (mostly 4 pieces) that are filled with whatever you prefer, from eggs, coleslaw, tomatoes, gherkins (pickles), meat (whichever kind, mostly steak), polony, hot dogs, viennas (google that if you don't know it), cheese, etc. And topped with any sauce of your liking. You can also add any spice of your liking to it
Thanks Jasmine! Such fond memories trying this. Delicious and huge!
On the list of things I'll be eating once I arrive in Cape Town on the 30th ...excited!
Definitely recommend it James! Good bang for your buck buddy ;) Try it at Miriam's Kitchen...
did you try it?
You should try the fullhouse steak masala with eggs and cheese added!!! Half a one is good for two.
Woah! Would sure taste good with the egg and cheese. Seriously, might even be enough for 3 ;)
That's definitely food for when we come from the club. Hope you tried the koeksisters
Ah, that is cool to know! Yes, that is coming up in a food vlog we have trying Cape Malay cuisine :)
If u wanted full experience should of got chips, polony, russian, cheese steak etc basically every topping
Thanks for the tip!
Oh my goodness those sandwiches are humongous guys! I couldn't get more than a 1/4 of half in me haha. So worth the money though
They were seriously massive! I don't feel the footage we captured properly showed just how big they actually are...lol
This looks so good! I love the french fries inside it and that steak looks good. I think I would be defeated too. You guys did a good job though.
Thank you! We were definitely soundly defeated by this.
I live in Cape Town I'm watching in 2019
omaygad why you do this, its ramadhan right now,i am going back later😂😂
So sorry for that! Bad timing on our part ;)
MIRACLE 123 sorry shouldn't lol but omg that hilariously cruel for you! Add it to the list of things you'll eat at sun down! Ramadan Mubarak!
MIRACLE 123 and iam reading your comment on a Ramadan a year later lol
Looks delectable, but very fattening.
Indeed!
The local special treat favourite is the full house steak gatsby with cheese and eggs as well. In which case you'd be a trooper for finishing a quarter.
It's the kind of thing where you order a whole one as a group for a Friday lunch and then don't eat for the weekend. :)
Hahahaha...wow, that sounds like a real challenge and delicious as well.
I am South African and I never had the Gatsby I am from Bloemfontein South Africa I think I'll try this once I am visiting Cape Town
Ah, you'll have to let me know what you think of it once you try it :)
Gatsby is a must try and so is Bunny Chow... yummy!
I am eating it right now
Great to hear Shane! Still the same?
That is insane , looks nice but holy cow I could never finish that
LOL, I think it is big enough to feed an army ;)
This used to be one of my college meal options
it is best enjoyed after a night out and everyone is hungry..
I'm from South Africa... 😂you guys are so funny... You should have tried the chicken mayo one those are the best... Usually 2 people only order one half portion and then they share... 🤣shame you guys are awesome...
Thank you very much! Oh my I could have nightmares about the size of this sandwich...hehe
When Sam said he was involuntarily burping, I actually laughed out loud! These sandwiches remind me of those at a restaurant called Primati Brothers, here in Pittsburgh, PA. They are huge and have fries (chips) and coleslaw on them. Everyone who comes to town wants to try one. Loved the video!
Thank you! lt was just too good I could barely control myself ;) I probably should have had even less ;) Ah, we'll have to remember the Primate Brothers. We'd love to visit Pittsburgh someday :)
Primanti Bros sandwiches are a must in Pittsburgh
Nope it's enough for one person #GiembaForLife😎
That is impressive!
awesome video as always.. keep it coming guys!! you guys look great together too.
Thank you very much!
Yummmm! I got the same Masala one from Golden Dish when i was in CPT its amazing!!!
So cool to hear! Was it as big as this one?
No place can beat golden dish's gatsbys
you should come to permanti brothers in pittsburgh
Thanks for the recommendation Joey!
سلام . مرسی Well done آفرین - alright goodbye . ok ok ok ok
Thanks!
Sensational, every bite of that meal deserves to be savoured. I would have given it everything to eat all of it and risk death by burst stomach.
Thank you! LOL, I appreciate your dedication.
lmfao
See you're making changes too (rebranded myself--ouch!). Over-the-hill cholesteral-wise, so enjoyed watching you guys "pig out" big time! Little bit late to suggest for Europe, but great memories of the South of France trains from Bordeaux to San Sebastian Spain (great tapas) with seaside towns along the way (see my old vids). On the Med side, train from Carcassonne (cassolet beans & duck stew) to Colliere (Sp> lamb onion stew) in a quaint seaside town). Ciao!
Thank you! That sandwich did us in ;) Ah, the south of France sounds fantastic. I hope we can make it :)
oh wow my mouth is watering now i cannot wait to go back to south africa, that is the first thing im gonna go eat and a parcel fish and chips from taxis fisheries or kalkies im really missing south africa and all the nice foods
Thank you! That is exciting to hear!
audrey was eating so happily until sam talked about calories LOL!
LOL, I ruined it for her ;)
Awesome vid guys, I am from the wonderful Cape Town :) , what shop is this you visited?
That is so cool to hear! This was Miriam's Kitchen :)
You guys are the best
Thank you!
Remind me of a big doner in Paris. They love putting fries in there.
Yes! It is kind of like that. This I think is the biggest sandwich we've ever had though anywhere...lol
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos
hhg
It was definitely huge!
Oh my that was filling. I remember trying to finish it i was in pain
South Africans are always hanged over whether we drink or not🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sam, I can't remember the last time you were defeated by a meal.
Hahaha...this was the TKO blow
You never eat a gatsby with fork and nife.
Our bad!
NANDOS fries are the same POTATO cuts...
That is good to know!
yep right..
These are the same ppl who were complaining abt the price of a 4-course meal in Matera (20 euros each one) ahahah ridiculous.
i can smell it from Antarctica :DDD
That looks real good guys, but if you really want a huge sandwich, you should come try an AK-47 in Johannesburg 😀
Thank you! So cool to hear that. We actually just heard of the AK-47 reading up on the Gatsby so we'll need to try it to compare. What is the main difference?
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos its meter long portion filled with steak chicken fried cold meats and fries with sauces of ur choice all in one roll
Akilwayas in church Street Mayfair, I recommend the garbage pizza with chips on top.... Damn i miss home
Yassis you guys needed more sauce😂😂 make it wet
Ah, next time we'll add more sauce!
that poor boy eats like an 8 year old,ag shame, another few bites and he would say 'gee n skuif ek se'
Totally a hangover sandwich! Looks insanely delicious!
LOL, most definitely!
thank you Samuel and Audrey. Im normally on youtube "travelling" to see dishes from around the world. hardly look at local ones. Well as a person who grew up here. I think you made the wrong choice on the place to buy your gatsby. I would actually take the 2 of you to a place called Aneesa's for a gatsby there you won't go wrong.
we call ourselves "Capetonian" just means someone who grew up in cape town.
Thank you! Ah, we'll have to check out Aneesa's when we're back in CT someday.
Cool! Thanks for letting us know.
Audrey and the cameraman
lol
Most people split one Gatsby between 4 people. Should try a full house Gatsby next it has either steak/chicken with egg and cheese.
Thanks for the recommendation! Easy to see how it would take 4 to tackle one of those :)
AKs are basically a footlong version of the Gatsby with so many toppings (including chips, meat and sausage galore, and maybe even a little more salad on the bottom😅)
Ah, thanks for explaining that! A cool video to make would be showing a Gatsby from Cape Town vs an AK-47 from Joburg :)
Lol, don't eat it like a burger, just pick at it, grabbing the pieces you want to eat.
Oh, okay.
I heard it was created in the mid 70's and by accident. Like a SOuth African Po Boy.
Interesting to hear. It sure is comfort food.
Whoooa, I could never finish an entire half by myself. hahahaha.
The steak gatsby is my favourite :) but I only grant myself a gatsby once every two years. hahaha. Carb load for daaays
Hahaha...I hear you. Oh my gosh they're huge.
A definite treat!
I live in Cape Town. i wish I met you guys
No way! I wish we had of done a Cape Town meetup :(
That's Insanely HUGE...And WAY TOO Much Calories.!!
Yes. Indeed.
That sandwich looks amazing. :)
Thanks! It was amazing. Maybe the biggest sandwich we've ever tried!
samuel's imitation of a 10-year-old child was the death of me, and also those are the bigest sandwiches i've ever seen!
Hahahaha...oh, my acting is bad ;) Seriously, that thing was a behemoth!
omg so many potatoes!! this should be a food challenge LOL. but it looks good.
LOL, it seriously was a challenge meal. If you can believe it the two we ordered were only 1/2 ones. Anyone who can take care of a full one deserves a reward ;)
love u both see together n very nice vdo n very nice n yummy buger my mouth full with water love frm lhr pakistan
Thank you very much! I wish we could share :)
A gatsby is meant to be a group meal. tOO LARGE FOR ONE PERON LOL
Our mistake with that!
It is amazing and in Durban it is sold in the school lunch shops for like R20
That is a great deal!
Do you take home doggy bags if you don't finish? I would.
Most of the time we do.
eating full house steak gadsby watching this lol next time ask for full house steak gadsby
That's awesome! We miss them.
You should try it with an egg added - delicious. It was invented as a good value meal.
Thanks for the suggestion!
At what takeaways or restaurant did you order that gatsby?
Handsss,no forks😂
I like that suggestion!
that creepy laughter!!!
lol
A whole Gatsby is usually cut in four, so four people can eat from it
That is far more sensible! 4 people sounds just about right.
Stoney is awesome but it has to be ice cold! Gatsbies are overrated imho, think people are sold by the size, a fancy chiproll makes more sense.
Thanks, I can see that. I think having it once in a while would be alright but not too often.
my cholesterol rose a bit just by watching you two eat that.....what happened to the leftovers???
Hahaha...we ended up having it to go
yeah....can't imagine anyone finishing that in one sitting....hope your Europe tour is going good.
so tasty
yeah, quite tasty :)
How much did your 1/2 sandwiches cost? I love how your shirt color matches the color of the restaurant. Its like a California burrito with the fries in it. $11 for both, thats comparable to what it might cost in the USA, if it was sold here
i like it
thanks
You can`t go wrong with an "AK"!!!!
Haha created by a 10 yr old - Sam imitates a 10 yr old 😂
LOL, I think Audrey thinks I sometimes act like a 10 year old without even trying ;)
Yes!You used your hands!NICE ONE🔥
Thanks! We just loved it!
The knife and fork does NOT belong on those plates. You use your hands.
Thanks for the tip William!
after watching this. Am so craving for 1 of these. But am from India n we dont get these here :/
Ah, I wish we could share with you!
In Johannesburg it's called an AK-47
Interesting to hear! Is it the same?
What a huge huge sandwich it looks good
It was definitely the biggest sandwich we've ever had...lol
wow awesome I like it
Thanks! I wish we could share it.
You need Matt Stonie to tackle that.
Hahaha...seriously we could have used his help for sure ;)
Sam does like to get stuck in...
haha
It is nice I love it I cane eat that every day
That is cool to hear! Super tasty and fills you up well.
Those are the neatest gatsby's I've seen in my life and R150 for 2 half portions?? Thek ripped you off big time
Cool! Too expensive?
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos definitely! I don't pay more than R80 for a full portion 😱
yah but its a full house steak Gatsby isn't it?
they go for so much at some places, although I think there's no need to over charge people.as Gordon Ramsay at Miriams he would've gotten a stroke that would cause his hair to even wrinkle
Omgahhhh yum
This sandwich was huge!
How much did the size you guys ordered cost ? p.s. I love you guys!!
Skollie kos... I buy atleast one full a week on my lunch break...
Antelope and fries on sandwich, i dunno about that.
Hope you tried the Vetkoek and Curried Mince
We'll have to next time.
