We don't capitalize white because white isn't a specific identity/culture, it's a very fluid catch all to describe people of a certain skin color and ancestry that comes from a set of cultures/nationalities. We would capitalize the ethnicities that are considered white, like Irish, Norwegian, German, Italian, etc., as well as ethnicities that don't have a specific nation of origin but are based on culture and history, like Black or Jewish. However, we wouldn't capitalize white, nor would we capitalize black when talking about purely about skin color.

Also, your reasoning does not hold up to scrutiny becase all black and white people who do not know of their ethnicity or ancestry can easily get an ancestry DNA test and identify their ethnicity for less than a hundred bucks. Such people simply refuse to do so and choose to remain in ignorance of their ethnicities and ancestries, and this applies to both white, black, and any other people who do not know of their ethnicity and ancestry.
I love the show but this part kinda missed the mark. It took a lot of balls to go on the air and talk about a mistake he made that nobody would have ever found out about if he hadn't said something. A little bit of praise for his honesty would have made this scene better, but instead it just looks like liam neeson accepting his spanking in return for a paycheck
