I couldn’t agree more, a gem indeed. I have more than a few small format lenses at my disposal, including much lauded red dot lenses from Wetzlar. This little lens has produced some my favorite images from years of travel; mounted on a CLE.
Spot on.. I bought a perfect copy very recently and have to say wow... On my M9 I jam the frame line lever to 35mm with a little bit of carved out black high density foam and voila. The lens is as close on the inside of the lines as a true 35 is on the outside. So I just shoot it as if it was a 35. The lens is a true "cron" I can't believe how much sharper this lens is than the Canon 50 1.8 or Voigt Nokton 35 lenses I also own. The Voigt is going on Craigslist.
Very nicely done review and comparison! I own both, the 40 mm and a 35mm (APH 6-digit), myself and couldn't agree with you more. The 40 mm is an wonderful lens for someone on the hunt for a reletive inexpensive Leica glass in the 35-ish range. BTW great tip with the adapter! By now I simply threded my filters in and alway cringed a bit by the feels and sound.
Indeed a no-brainer pick for a 35mm lens alternative. And because I love the 40mm so much, decided to sell my Leica M4-2 and bought a Rollei 35 RF just for this lens.
Absolutely to the point 👌 I had the Rokkor version which I sadly sold together with the Leica CL (don’t regret that however). Filter thread should be 40,5 mm, which is like for most lenses of the Contax RF system, so you can get Zeiss filters, and there were many Japanese producers making filters in this size, Yashica, Minolta, Konica… just takes a little looking a round in junk boxes…
I’m still trying to find my way in Leica M land. So, if I’m correct a 40/2 C lens fits a M body? Like also on Digital M bodies? Can anyone help me out here please? Thank you so much.
@@emmysphotobook Oh wow, that’s fast. Thank you. These 40mm lenses are quite easily available and affordable compared to the new modern lenses. I’m still on the fence what camera to choose. I have a Q2 but I like what I see from the monochrome cameras too. It’s so hard to make a decision. An only spend that much money once so I need to nail it straight away. Love the M11-P too. And what if a Q3M comes out next year or so. Heard some rumors a Q3 with a different lens might come soon too. Man o man.
Might be a weird question, but do you know if either of these were made with Thorium or Lanthanum? I’m averse to radioactive lenses, and have actually been eyeing both these lenses but don’t wanna bite the bullet if they contain those materials
Hello EP. I would take the 35 mm. I don't like the background IQ of this very 40 mm Canadian model you demonstrate wide open. I would qualify it as a lazy. But it isn't based on user experience.
Great comparison, I’m on a tight budget and bought the 40C for $320 US, so pleased and thankful

The Minolta Rokkor m 40/2 is the same lens and even cheaper
