In March 2021 we gave our six year old daughter her first proper camera... a 1970s Canon Canonet 28 as well as a turquoise leather-bound photo album for her to record her images.
This UA-cam channel is an accompaniment to that album. We will document Emmy's 35mm photographic journey whilst showcasing some of her Daddy's favourite 35mm cameras.
Our images are shot almost exclusively with Ilford Delta 100 (unless otherwise stated), then developed at home in the kitchen sink and scanned with a Pakon 135+ Negative Scanner.

Voigtlander Vito IIa Review - A Hidden Gem of a Camera!
This really helped further convince me that I made the right choice getting a v3 for about half as much! Results are SO similar. Many don't like the long throw but I find it's great for being very particular when zone shooting. Most lenses cramp the 10 to 25 range. I did add a focus tab tho!
hey cool video. can't switch on flash ... is it automatic when you open it ? then it doesn't work :( I get the red point in viewer
A rotating lens provides absolutely no distortion so long as the camera is level (or plumb when shooting vertically).
I use a Kiev 4A (Contax II copy) a far better camera than my FED 2 (derived from the Leica II with a few tweaks). The, "Contax Hold," gets easier with practice. Did you know about the hidden 1sec speed ? (Self-timer on B.)
I’m still trying to find my way in Leica M land. So, if I’m correct a 40/2 C lens fits a M body? Like also on Digital M bodies? Can anyone help me out here please? Thank you so much.
Correct this will fit all leica m mounts including digital
@@emmysphotobook Oh wow, that’s fast. Thank you. These 40mm lenses are quite easily available and affordable compared to the new modern lenses. I’m still on the fence what camera to choose. I have a Q2 but I like what I see from the monochrome cameras too. It’s so hard to make a decision. An only spend that much money once so I need to nail it straight away. Love the M11-P too. And what if a Q3M comes out next year or so. Heard some rumors a Q3 with a different lens might come soon too. Man o man.
Thanks for the sharp and clear lens comparison! You helped me keep my 6 blade one!! I glad! Thanks.

I have two Kiev-4a bodies, and prefer it more since they have pc-sync port and I used modern flashes with it c: And you can slap Contax rangefinder lenses on Kiev easily, no rangefinder correction needed to my knowledge
i just recently aquired a photosniper kit of my own and like you was a little concerned about taking it out in public, but on the day i did decide to take it out i ran into no issues aside from the odd question about my outrageous camera from curious member sof the public and other photographers out on the town. i even happened across a protest rally and the 9 or so uniformed police who were present didnt take issue with it, one of them actually seemed to be a bit of a fan of the old soviet beast.
I should've watched this last week. I still would've bought the coated V.1, but I would've made sure to get a hood.
Perhaps try ortho film! You can handle it under a safe light so you can see what you're doing and then do a bath develop with chems in trays. It'd also be around 80 iso (depending on brand), so it'd be quite close to the 50 that the camera was designed for. All in all tho, that's a very, very cool camera!
Thank you for the great review. Really liked the concept and engineering aspects of the product.
Love mine, its been to rural france and shot many rolls
I have the same kit, only my lens is black. I have to say I like that creamy white one better.
I just bought R2 olive body. Please tell me. Do you think that I should buy trigger winder?😂😂 I'm so thinking now buy or not..
A little tip, if you can somehow get hold of one, have a look for a Voigtländer Vitomatic IIIcs (only 4200 of this model were produced, so you would have to search more intensively) or a Voigtländer Vitomatic IIcs. Otherwise, I can only recommend that you try a Praktica VLC or Praktica VLC2 or Praktica VLC3. Greetings from Germany
UA-cam reviewers take note, this is how you do a review! Slow steady shots of the thing being reviewed. The speaker talks in a slow, steady voice, giving the viewer a chance to process what is being said. Well done! Phoenix, AZ

Hi mate - great shots. I just got the same camera and also having issues advancing / loading the film. Can you give me a run through of what you did to fix it so I can see whether I can do the same?
Hello. This is an old comment, so you might have figured it out already, but it might help someone else. I had the same issue (film not advancing). I disassembled mine carefully and followed the chain of cogs from the external winding wheel to the film spool. I discovered a long plastic column that conducts the mechanical action from the top of the camera to the bottom, which had snapped at the bottom gear. It's a common breaking point in these cameras as this column has a some torque load and it's made of fragile plastic. I tried glueing it back multiple times but couldn't make it work. I eventually used another cog as a mold and used epoxy-resin to do a makeshift gear. It's hard to describe the process exactly (and English is not my native language). But, overall, you'll have to mac-gyver your way to repair one of those. They're not particularly complex on the inside, but it can be tricky
I much preferred the Contax to the Leica. I liked the rangefinder better and i never burned a hole in the shutter, as I did wth my IIIC.
Um... you are confusing ergonomics with subjective perception of quality: the speeds dial sure feels "cheap" and anemic bit it IS ergonomic in the sense of position, operation and tactile feedback. The viewfinder however is un-ergonomic in the sense that the display of over/under exposure is hurting established standard conventions in that OVERexposure is indicated by a low position of the needle and vice versa for underexposure. . Apart from that I can't really see any big issues with CL: paired with good lenses (in my case with the 2.0/35 and the 2.8/90) you have a compact and affordable travel camera that will give you tack-sharp photos of incredible detail. I use mine since the mid 1990s and the only issue I had was a dead light meter when the camera was about 20 years old and a range-finder that needed adjustment after a colleague knocked it off my desk one day. While I would not go out and buy any random CL with unknown history, one that has properly been taken care of can be a lot of fun and an affordable way to use legendary M-glass between 28-90mm focal length.
Seems pretty crap to me mate
Below I should have said V2, satin chrome. People say too much contrast in V3, but when I compare the contrast seems equal. I do not have a 5, but do have APO and at 4 they seem equal. I found mine in the 80`s in a camera shop unused and I stored it until last year. The shop owner bought two of everything , sold one and collected the other..
I saw one for sale in a second hand camera shop: € 4.000! And one that’s going to be sold in an auction. Starting price € 500.
That was very informative thank you
Excellent overview of the camera. Its probably the most visceral way to take a single 35mm photograph I have seen. Fascinating camera but not one I would use for photographing F1 racing ;)
Love your video. Inspired me to get the same setup. Quick question, How do you know what’s in the frame with the 40mm lens. I noticed the outlines are for 35,50 & 70.
you'd just keep it in mind that there's a slight crop from the 35mm. Friend of mine has the same setup and I asked him the same question
How long was this particular camera model, the Robot Royal 36 lll produced for and what was the exact year it was discontinued?
The only issue is that rangefinders are not precise enough to focus at f1.0. For critical focus you'll need an electronic viewfinder that unfortunately does not exist for film cameras. BTW it would be an amazing product: a film dslr with electronic viewfinder. I think it could be done with the old Sony half transparent mirror technology.
it is precisive enough for rangfinder camera actually

Waiting on that XPAN review 😎 3:30
You need to load it first and cock shutter.... Just had mine this weekend (Vito ii) also have 2 Vito B.... mk1 and mk 2........love em!!
Thanks for this - I just received one of these as a gift. I have a couple of Ikon Continas of a similar design. This Voigtlander looks perfect, but the shutter would not cock, so I kept thinking, does it need film? Then I opened the back and turned the film guide rod and heard a click. Then when I tried the shutter, it has an awesome click. This thing is mint! Can't wait to load some film and get going!
Thank you for this very informative and interesting video. My GAS addiction is in high gear lusting after this camera! Your daughters are soo adorable...you are blessed. 😊
Very curious what the final trade was! Underrated series for sure
the Cl is amazing, i meter with my eyes and film is forgiving. zone focus works amazing and how i shoot when im on the street. i use one speed of film. iso 400, have been since 1992. its smaller and easier to have all day then an M. I used M's for years, mostly proffesionally and for personal work. i've owned an M2, M4, M6ttl, M6 classic, M6 titanium, Mp, M8, M9, M9p, CL. I love summicrons, and have owned a few variants of the 35 and 50. both german and canada versions as well. I do love the 28mm elmarit lens for street as well. the CL has a few things to get used to but nothing I would ding the camera for. things beyond its capability. I have known press and journalists on the field who used these in the 90's side by side their M's and Nikons. if its good enough for them, its probably better than I need it. I have used my M's for street work and for editorials. At some point the Cl was marketed to starters but to me its a working mans go to backup or vacation camera. rather have a CL stolen form my neck than my MP. its also lighter for travel than an all brass camera. I guess im a fan.
Nothing like a hoodless chode to get the creative juices flowing.
Great video ! Do you know what hood can be used on this lens? Looking for a square hood but can’t find it anywhere :(
I just found one at my local thrift store for $30
You should try a version 1 satin chrome, not shinny chrome.
got one of these yesterday for 10 euros
Hello EP. It's hard to believe they are focused on the same spot, especially when comparing the out of focus @ 2.8. See @ 2:06. What ever, it's like the V3 is focused ahead of V5 in your test. But if equally focused, then the V5 stands in another league.
Hello EP. I would take the 35 mm. I don't like the background IQ of this very 40 mm Canadian model you demonstrate wide open. I would qualify it as a lazy. But it isn't based on user experience.
C40 all made in wetzlar I think
V3 "flimsy" Ha Ha! I've used the v3 for almost 60 years, taken it around the world a few times, desert hot and freezing cool environments and it has never ever failed me. Yes, maybe it is a bit surprising a mount of aluminum alloy can be better than brass, I just call it 'the tank' for durability. I've had many summicron lenses over the years, and this is the one I will always keep for its over-all optical quality and build. It also has a very nice longer throw focus which is butter smooth and more precise than the later versions, aperture adjustment is the old 2-pin internals smooth. As the people at Leica told me back when I got mine, 'more contrast than the earlier versions (for perceived higher sharpness) and no distortion, and better in the close focus range.' The v4 and v5 I've had are also great optically, but just not built as well, no removable optical unit head (which I've used in an enlarger and bellows), and that v5 extendable hood... is just not a 'working' feature. The only thing about the v3 is flare, which you need to be aware of direct or strong light at the edge of the frame. Of course, with any Summicron [35/50/90] it is more a matter of the person behind the lens ;-)
A great post and I am with you!
Beautiful cameras. Curious to see where this goes!
Thank you for your excellent video. The Robot Royals are beautiful and beautifully made cameras. Your photos look great.
V5 on M11 can resolve all 60mp at f4, a little less at f2. The colors and contrast are already great wide open. Also built like a tank.
good video thanks, i have the same 40mm lense but i dont know how to remove the hood and i don't want to damage it?
Wonderful comparison, thank you!!
You speak so clearly and concisely! Thanks very much for this video
I don’t have a Contax, but I do have a Kiev 4A. A couple of things I don’t like are the awkward Contax grip needed, and the weird Contax lens mount Vs the simple screw mount of the Leica, or in my case FED 1. I also find the focus wheel on the Kiev difficult to use, but on my example it is rather still to turn; I ought to have the camera serviced.
Great comparison, I’m on a tight budget and bought the 40C for $320 US, so pleased and thankful
thank you for this test !
