Given that the effective focus plane doesn't change, a 40mm at f2 will always have same depth of focus in any other sensor. So, if you shoot on full frame the difficulty to zone-focus would be exactly the same. What changed is only your coverage or "cropped image".
Because of this, for zone focusing, shooting wide focal length benefits more because wider focal length = bigger focus plane. It is even more beneficial when shooting smaller sensor.
    Why?
Full frame with 35mm has significantly smaller focus plane compared to...
    Cropped 1.5 with 23mm
Both case, have equivalent field of view like a 35mm full frame
Because a 23mm lens has more depth of focus plane.
    Hope this helps!

I sometimes use my M8 and Sony Rx1r side by side and I always feel that the Sony is to "clean". The images that comes out from the M8 are just stunning. It is something about that they are not perfect, digital perfect, instead they talk to your soul. Sony can't do that. Really like the M8😊

Hey :) wondered for the longest time about the 40mm on the M8, how do you feel it working especially close focusing with the 35 frame lines?
Considering getting one, your opinion would be appreciated :-)

Unfortunately most of this Summicron 40mm lenses nowaday have some internal fog. It is hard to find a clean copy.

Buddy Justin, I think it's a little consumer lens. Think bigger you'll get more punch, even visible defects.
This one is polite & neutral like a swiss banker dealing nazi gold to international finance.
Not to say you're loosing you're time with such a bad boy... my advice : bigger. The magic of special optics is a product of optical cheating : what is that ?
Playing with laws instead of obeying market dictature... Btw, I'm not a film maker nor a photographer : I learn from guys like you.

i mean you're not totally wrong. I think this lens was made in collab with Minolta.
