IRISH SODA BREAD RECIPE
Ingredients:
2.5 cups oat flour, or ground oats (250g)
1.5 cups spelt flour, or whole wheat flour (190g)
2 tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tsp caraway seeds
1.5 cups buttermilk (360ml)
1 egg
NUTRITIONAL INFO (per slice):
189 calories, fat 3.5g, carb 32.2g, protein 8.1g
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 450°F (225°C). Grease a skillet or baking pan.
Combine all the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl: oat flour, spelt flour, cornstarch, baking soda, salt, and caraway seeds.
In a separate container, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until well combined.
Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk mixture.
Using a spoon, gently stir the mixture until a dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.
Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead it gently a few times to shape it into a round circle.
Place the shaped dough into the prepared skillet or baking pan.
Using a sharp knife, score a cross on the top of the dough. This helps the bread expand while baking.
Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 400°F (200°C).
Continue baking for another 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is deep golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Remove from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for a few minutes.
Transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
Serve sliced and enjoy with your favorite spreads or as a side to soups and stews.
Note: Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
I can't believe I have buttermilk I need to go use & also need bread, and this man delivers me the answer to both. Magic! 🕊️
You can make your own as well, if you're ever in a pinch: For every 1 cup of milk, stir in 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar. Let sit for 10 minutes.
@@chloebelle4923 oh I'm a genius just like you and know; I got a pint half off 🤭

Cant wait to try this. Can you please tell me how many servings it makes? Thank you ❤
Hi! I would say 12 servings about 70g each. Hope you'll find it delicious!
Hi there. The bread looks wonderful. Could the dough be baked as scones? Thank you ☺
Hi Jackie! Sure, that would be fine too, actually love the idea.
Can you substitute the cornstarch 1:1 with either arrowroot, tapioca, or potato starch... or would something else work?
Keep up 🖐️🙏🤝❤️
Thanks for supporting!

Hi Sasha, looks awesome. Want to try it, but I can't have gluten. What could replace the spelt flour?
Hi, thanks! Well you can use any gluten flour mix you usually have in your baked goods, even making it with oat flour only would be fine.
Thanks for sharing lovely recipe. Must give it a try. Thankd
Great recipe! What size of skillet did you use?
Hi, so glad you like it! My skillet, it's 10 1/2 inch or 26 cm.
@@HowToCookSmarter thank you so much x
Could you use buckwheat flour instead of spelt
It’s called a wheaten soda bread 👍😍
Thank you for another very nice looking recipe 🙂 I would like to bake this bread, but I can't use dairy products. What can I use to replace the butter milk?
Hi! You can make your own buttermilk using dairy-free milk of your choice and some lemon juice, the acidity is what really matters, you need to activate that baking soda. For buttermilk, let's say 1 cup soy milk and 1 tbsp lemon juice, and let it sit for a few minutes.
@@HowToCookSmarter Thank you very much 🙂 I will try that.🍞
Hi Sasha! Can I use home made kefir inside of buttermilk?
Thanks 😊
Hi Matea! Sure, kefir would be just great for making this bread.
I love your Irish accent!😅
Yeah, I know, I'm getting used to it:)
Can I sub the wheat flour. Wheat is terrible in Canada
Thanks for the recipe! Do you think kefir would work instead of buttermilk in this recipe? I know i can make buttermilk by adding vinegar or lemon juice to milk, but opening another liter pack of milk is going to cause a traffic jam in my small fridge 😅. I just have non dairy, vanilla flavored milk open
Hi! Sure, using kefir instead of buttermilk would be just fine, I guess it would taste a bit stronger.
thanks!

Sasha, can i use cornflour instead of spelt?
Hi, yes that would be great, actually I'm going to do the same next time.
Can you add more grinded seeds to it to increase the protein?
Sure, that would be just fine, seeds will add some additional flavor too.
I like everything, except the starch.
So, I'll substitute with coconut flakes.
In general combination of oatmeal and coconut flakes gives a crumbly texture.
🙋
Yeah, I know, it's for the better texture, adding some coconut flakes for the extra crunch is a good idea.
I don’t have spelt flour can I use all purpose flour?
Hi, I would rather use a whole wheat flour for some extra nutrition.
Can I use wheat flour as an alternate to Spelt flour ?
Sure, but I would recommend you use whole wheat flour for more nutrition.
@@HowToCookSmarter thanks so much.
Csn i use oatmilk instead lf buttermilk?
Sure, just add a tablespoon of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, you need something to activate the baking soda.
Can anyone enlighten me on what the difference is between soda bread and sourdough? Is it healthier? How does it taste? Texture? 😅
Well, sourdough bread is made from the starter, not really the baking soda... This soda bread is more dense compared to sourdough bread, due to its shorter preparation and lack of yeast fermentation. Talking about the health benefits, both methods are fine, it's more about what type of flour you use.
What's caraway seeds? 😮
Hi, caraway seeds are quite similar to cumin seeds, buy the looks, but the taste is quite different, closer to fennel seeds, really strong in flavor.

My husband gets bad headaches from baking soda, so I will never be able to make this bread 🥺
You could give it a try using 3x baking powder instead of baking soda, never tried before but might work.
