- Nell Carter was Miss Hannigan in the 1997 Broadway revival of "Annie," and she got an extra song in the first act, "You Make Me Happy." Colleen Dunn is Grace Farrell. Go to • NELL CARTER "Annie" '9... for Nell Carter in two more numbers from this production.
Nell Carter's comic timing should be classified as a military-grade weapon. Thank God for the ability to record; the world deserves every second of this woman's talent.
Nell Carter - a living, breathing legend that always brought vivacity and charisma every time she took on a role. IMO, One of the best Miss Hannigans, bar none.
I thought she totally missed the boat in this role, and as I recall, the reviews for both her and this production were deservedly awful.
@@malp1 I will agree that this revival could've been a LOT better (this number and its predecessor were unnecessary, anyway). It was over when Joanna Pacitti was unjustly replaced, but I feel that Nell is brilliant as Hannigan! She has that crucial balance of funny, but also intimidatingly scary at times.
So good we got this recorded....Nell was great :)
I always loved Nell. What an amazing set of pipes! I wish I had seen this with her. I love this song so much. Made the show more interesting. They should have added this into the show permanently. It's a shame it's not available in the rental version. It's also a shame this production didn't get a recording.
There is no one like Nell Carter-damn she was amazing!
Such a god damn effortless fabulous voice. We lost a treasure in her.
i love this lady OMG . i am so sad she's gone :(
Bless your soul. I have been wanting to see this for decades.
yeah and now annie is celebrated for 40 years this year.
What a phenomenal song! I never knew they put this in for her. She was an incredible talent.
I had the pleasure of seeing her in this twice! Once on your the week after they fired the first Annie and then again the next month when it was on Broadway.
This should be in more productions
i was just thinking about this added song and wondered it sounded like the other day! She sure had amazing timing and pipes!
She is a fantastic performer
This is so cool.
The right ear just plays the vocals and the left ear just plays the instrumentals
Did she ever play Matron Mama Morton? She would have been amazing in that, she’s a treat here ❤
wonderful
Nell Carter has “You Make Me Happy” while Anthony Warlow has “Why Should I Change A Thing”
Aurora Spiderwoman, I sent you a private message some time back, but I'm not sure if you got it. I performed with this production for nearly the entire two-year run, from pre-Broadway to the final tour city of Detroit. I am utterly floored that this exists, as the show was not recorded for Lincoln Center Library's archives, and the song was cut after Nell left. Anyway, please look through your messages and I eagerly await to hear from you (please, please, please!).
You must have some incredible stories. ;)
TONS!
Why was it taken out after she left? Who replaced her?
Nell's contract stipulated that a new song be created especially for her. It originally featured a bizarre interlude in which Miss Hannigan sang/shouted something about Clark Gable and orange juice. I could never make out what she was saying. It didn't work and it was too long, so it was reworked a bit, eventually becoming the version you see above. Nell's year-long contract ended while we were on the road, and therefore the song was cut. She was replaced by Sally Struthers (a gem), who did the remainder of the run.
I was a teenager when the Turning Point story about this production aired and have been fascinated by it ever since. Do you happen to recall how and where Nell's "Don't Mess With Mother" number fit into the show before it evolved into the song above? Also I saw Annie on tour with Sally Struthers in Minneapolis! I still have the program that she autographed for me. Were you still with the show at that point?
Does anyone prefer “Sign” or “You Make Me Happy?”
I guess I'm biased towards "Sign" for two reasons: it's an extra number for Oliver Warbucks, which if inserted into the current licensed version would reap more benefit than doubt in that we (being the audience) will see a distinction as clear as pie between Hannigan and Warbucks. Moreover, a lot of folks aren't familiar with "You Make Me Happy / Don't Mess With Mama" due in whole to the fact that a majority of 'em have seen the 1982 film, with the late Albert Finney, and the great Carol Burnett. I wouldn't be surprised if the next Annie revival, whenever it is, adds back either of these numbers, but especially if Taraji P. Henson reprises her role on "Annie Live", which aired sometime around the Omicron variant of COVID which struck during and after the 2021 holidays.
Thank you for this! Always wanted to hear this song. Would you happen to have any footage of Annie 2: Miss Hannigan's Revenge or Annie Warbucks?
There is a recoded version of this called Dont Mess With Mama sung by Kathie Lee Gifford…not as good as this clearly lol
Where did you find this
