The Free State of Jones (2016) is a historical drama based on the true story of Newton Knight, a Southern farmer who led a rebellion against the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Disillusioned with the war and the Confederacy’s treatment of poor farmers, Knight deserts the Confederate army and forms a mixed-race resistance group. Together, they declare Jones County, Mississippi, a free state where people of all races are treated equally. The film also touches on Knight’s later efforts during Reconstruction, his marriage to a former enslaved woman, and the long-term consequences of his stand. The movie explores themes of racial injustice, class struggle, and resistance against oppressive systems. It’s a gripping story of a lesser-known but significant chapter in American history.
I was in the movie "Bernie" with Matthew. He was a very laid back person and very kind. During filming, it was very hot on the set because they had to turn off the a/c in the middle of summer in central Texas. I have asthma and if I get overheated, my asthma causes me to start uncontrolled cough. Matthaew thought it would help if i drank water so he gave me his bottle of water. I ended up going to the EMS truck for a little oxygen. Everything was much better after i cooled down and got some fresh air. It is interesting to note that as the war progressed the Confederacy became more authoritarian. And became more or less a command economy as the war dragged on. This is pretty normal in war as the demands of feeding and clothing soldiers put a drain on the economy. Farmers are able to grow their crops, and factory owners are able to produce the shoes and clothes. But it becomes more difficult to harvest the crops, and move the clothing when too men are fighting in war. The South was able to field armies to hold their own against the North. But by 1864, they were sending old men and boys to fight. In a documentary by the History Channel, the producers recounted a soldier's account during Sherman's March. A soldier was assigned to recover weapons from a recent battle and discovered a boy (I do not know his age) who fell in battle. Next to him laid his father and his uncles.
@@Moving_Target65 That was also against their basic principle of State (as opposed to National government) supremacy. The South had conscription difficulties because of that.
Soldiers were often identified by regiment and rank, or some had identifying papers on themselves. Or someone in their group knew them and survived to identify the body, etc. Soldiers don't usually move randomly across a battlefield, so sometimes it's quite easy to tell who died simply from where the bodies are lying. I don't know if dog tags were standard for both armies I.during the civil war, but I can say that at very least the armies had a track of the soldiers in each regiment and company for...Basically paperwork purposes. Taxes and payroll, etc. So it was possible to tell who died just from who survived, too. If you have 50 men on a list and 13 of them come back, you list 37.
I think the overwhelming loss of relatives and friends, as well as the increasing difficulties faced by the south is what really created the fondness people today gave for the confederacy. I don't ever think I've heard someone honestly wax poetic about the views and goals of the confederacy. Rarely do I hear someone approve of their methods or ideas for government. I hear a lot of stories about their ancestors and how many loved ones they lost, how much they struggled. It feels like people are proud of what their families overcame, without ever quite getting into why they had to overcome that difficulty to begin with. It's interesting. But kind of devastating to think of the incredible waste of life, all for nothing.
Yes, my daddy had 3 daughters. We were raised to be self sufficient. We were taught everything a guy does inside and outside the home. Even car repair of any kind. We also did everything inside, including sewing. My dad grew up as one of 10 in the deep south in poverty, everyone did everything. A quilting bee meant everyone sat all the way around and sewed by hand, even for neighbors. He also picked acres of high cotton and ploughed fields behind a stubborn mule. He didn't have shoes in the summer. He was an amazing man. He even survived nearly drowning in his own blood in Belgium in sub freezing temperatures. Even in today’s society families have to defend their own property, any way they can. Home invasions are common so you must be ready to defend and fight to protect your loved ones. That’s my way of doing it

God Bless You 🙏
Brilliant film.
An armed society is a polite society and this proves it!
That’s what happen when you mistake fiction for reality. Nonsense 😂
Oh HELL YES. I LOVE it when people underestimate me. I'm a female combat medic veteran. I was raised in an EXTREMELY violent environment in the hills of Tennessee. Bring it on laughing boy. 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Everyone in the USA needs to watch this show!!!
Free State of Jones
He is a great actor. He played a layer in a movie with Samuel Jackson where he defended Samuel Jackson down south because these white dudes rated his daughter. Sandra bullock also in the movie , but his soft voice at the ending surprised the jury.
A Time to Kill
I read the book and the watched the movie... enjoyed both.
They wouldn't have let them leave in real life
Wouldn't be NO COMING BACK
If only we still had that courage against tyrants 😔
I think iv watched this movie... many yearss ago...they stayed together n protect each other, travelling family, until th girls grew up. Very motivating story
EVEN TODAY OUR CHILDREN NEED TO KNOW HOW TO HANDLE A GUN PROPERLY .SORRY TO SAY WITH THE SHAPE OUR COUNTRY IS IN..Della
Excellent movie!
This, I think, is based on a true story. A section of N Georgia stood with the Union. This is also the same part of the Country of the Civilized tribes. Cherokee I believe. Had mixed with Irish and were assimilated into white society and yet forced to Oklahoma by Jackson and the Trail of Tears.
My husband's ancestors were a part of this group of Cherokee on the trail of tears. Thank-you for bringing this fact to mind.
This was based in Mississippi.
Straight from
Google. Based on a true story. Your topic sounds interesting too.
@@cedricwilson2055 cool movie
Honestly one of the best movies ever.
One of the most underrated movies ever...
Should be shown in schools
Learn the Lesson America. Train your children early and often. I’d much rather children play with toys and do chores but they need to be ready to repel Evil. In this situation, Gubmnt.
Yes!!
Buena tactica el ardid de escobas.
This is my Family, except my Sister-in-Law... 🙉🙈🙊
Thanks...Gonna watch THIS AGAIN
...GREAT MOVIE.
So sorry they have to go through this...😢
My type of sisters
Newt was a good man
Kids with guns, worst thing that can happen. Girls don’t play..
Back in the day, every father would teach his daughters and sons how to use a weapon and not be afraid to fire and defense of the family🙏🇺🇸🤔👍
The men in power who didnt go to war used to do bad things to women left home. This man is right about staying.
What is the name of this movie
"Free state of Jones"
ChatGPT helped lol
Free state of Jones i think
Free state of Jones in reverse image for some reason
@@rajinkajinto avoid trademark infringement ding.
Free State of Jones. It’s a true story.
The movie, The Free State of Jones.
And THIS is why we need a legal Militia to STAY LEGAL!!! To prevent Government overreach.
As if a civilian militia would have a chance against the greatest military in the world and its trillion dollar arsenal, special ops, land, air and sea capabilities and advanced technology. ahahahahahahahahahahaha
@@marquitamarina1486 who do you think helped during the war back then? The country folk that stayed home, stayed to protect their farms & family, to keep away from them, they banded together picked a side. They didn't do it for the government & they knew every game trail & every other short cut to get some where, all the ambush spots (for killing deer & wild hogs). Killing men back then wasn't much different. They were recognized by the government back then. Don't know if I'd want the government to recognized militia now, they pick you off, the veteran's, work their way down to the weakest.
@@AlleyCat-1 Back then? This is the 21st century. Try to keep up.
@marquitamarina1486 I am up to date mouth. Same thing applies, except country families don't rely on squirrels as much to feed their families, but their still a good shot. Unless government sanctions the militia, I wouldn't trust them. They will still go after them, veteran's & try to go after everyone with a gun. Or haven't you been paying attention? 🤔🙄
This is my moms great grand father x4. We grew up visiting soso every summer learning about my heritage! Deep, twisted and heroic history! The book is even better! If you ever want to learn the whole truth my great aunt is the one who provided the info to Victoria B. The author/screen writer!
A fourth great-grandparent is an ancestor that you share 1/64 of their DNA with.
@@master-oppressor and your point is what exactly? Weird.
@@Itzlunalee33My point is to define your words more precisely so that people understand wtf you're saying.
Don't be mad. Be educated.
Even in today’s society families have to defend their own property, any way they can. Home invasions are common so you must be ready to defend and fight to protect your loved ones.
That’s my way of doing it
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
That's why we have it.
One of my favorite movies. This Greenbook hidden figures and the help
The worst of the worse was always the Home Guard. Ruthless animals that preyed on innocents.
It couldn’t be anybody else, but Matthew McConaughey with that sexy voice
This is a good example of why the 2nd and 3rd amendments were/are important. One day soon the 2 parties will go to an all out brawl and civil war pursuits. When that happens, everyone not involved will need to defend themselves and their properties.
God bless america and daddy's little girls. I would never underestimate little girls trying to protect their father.😊 And vice versa.❤
This is going to be America, if the evil cabal SWAMP isn't stopped. We The People, Prayers. ❤❤❤.
I just love this guy his voice a lone is enough to take any woman down Hhmm ❤❤❤❤
I've watched this movie numerous times!! Gives us a look back at how unjust times were. Great movie!! Highly recommend!😊👏👏
This was an excellent movie. I love Matthew McConaughey. One of my favorite actors ❤❤❤
Love it. ❤ Love them lil’ defenders!
GREAT MOVIE, MATTHEW IS A GREAT ACTOR, HE HAS THAT COOL PRESENCE IN ALL HIS ROLES...
