  • 31.07.2020 - Beni Kählin offered to show me the Power of High Alps flying only a few days before the Weather Factors seemed to fit perfectly to be able to fly above 4000m over Sea. I had a shot Time to decide if I wanted to do the Flight but I didn't need thinking. Flying with one of the most talented Pilots of Interlaken and trying to get some Distance was a nobrainer for me. So we met on the afternoon of the 31. July on top of Schilthorn and took launched into a perfect weather situation. We managed to climb over Schilthorn (our Launch) Jungfrau, Eiger, Schreckhorn, Lauteraarhorn and managed to get over the Alps to the Wallis. We originally planned to go to Domodossola for a good Pizza (Beni mentioned he knows a great landing Spot with an even better Pizzeria over there) but we were washed down by north-föhn and couldn't climb the last Mountain between us and Domodossola. After Landing the Adventure didn't end, we hitchhiked over the Grimselpass and after a quick bath in the Grimselpass "Totensee" - Beni searched for an opportunity to fly from Grimsel to Meiringen. Sadly the Weather was a bit to harsh and Landingareas scarce, so we decided to talk to our Hitchhiker-Driver and she drove us to Meiringen where we managed to go on a Train back home to Interlaken. Amazing Day, amazing Adventure!

Hi Raphael, great video! I have flown with Beni a number of times and he is a top class pilot and a really nice guy. He is extremely good at finding lift. I recommend him to anyone that I think might be interested in paragliding or speedflying. This sort of long distance, high altitude flight is the number 1 thing I want to do in the Alps. This year I had to postpone my trip due to the Covid-19 situation but I will be back in Switzerland in 2021. What system or software did you use to produce the map of your flight please? Did you need special equipment for this, or did Beni have something to record the details of the flight please? So you flew on 31 July, yes? I will ensure that I am in Switzerland next year at this time.

Hi Charles, Beni tracked the Flight with is "Board Computer" called a Vario. Its basically a Device to show you acousticly if you are in lift or in sink by beeping in different tones. That device also collects GPS Data. In the End Beni just had to send me a IGC file - which is the Track information of the Flight and I put it in ayvri.com - a Software specialized in visualizing GPS Tracks - which is free available. The Funny thing is: I myself am a Paraglidingpilot too - and Beni was my teacher. Nevertheless I opted to go on a Tandemflight with him. Mainly because I am a beginner and wanted to learn something from Beni and also because I am a beginner and don't have the courage to fly at those altitudes and so far away from zivilisation. Imagine - at some Point in our Journey if we had to land, I wouldn't be sure if we could reach a street in a useful time period before the night! :-)
As for the Date: Yes Late July/start of August is the Time for such flights but with a Pro like Beni he can find good Flights at any time of Spring/Summer!

@@raphaeleymann Hi Raphael, many thanks for your information! I think you made a very wise choice to go tandem on a flight like that. It's an interesting point you make about having to make a landing somewhere unexpected in such a wild area. Definitely better to be two people in such a case. And much less likely with such an experienced pilot flying. It's a shame that you didn't manage to do the Jungfrau toplanding. That would have been quite something!
