My AGpa, shelling those is a true test in patience. I did my black beans the same way. It took me three days. My favorite part of your videos is your taste test close up. Someone told me to put the beans/peas in a sheet or tarp and beat it with a stick. Supposedly this shells them all at once. Of course I like to sit and shell. Reminds me of my Mom when we'd sit on the back porch and visit and shell them. Thanks for sharing. I'll grow those next year.

This brings back memories from my childhood of growing purple hull peas with my Grandmother in her large garden in Foxworth, Mississippi. She always shared some of her crop with my cousins down the road. Spent hours shelling the peas, and more hours canning the peas. We did speckled butter beans as well. After watching this I’m hungry for black eye peas ! Will fix some tomorrow with corn bread. Thanks for the planting lesson with the added dirt. Does your wife like the peas too ? Thanks again and have a wonderful weekend. Lynnette
Hello Lynnette, I hope you folks are doing well. As you see in my video, it is dry here and I know your area is dry also. Hopefully we will get some much needed rain early next week. It would not be too hard to space these out in the row, but this works really good for small seeds like turnip or kale seeds. Yes, my wife does like these peas. Thanks for watching. OAG

looks amazingly good. I had 2 rows of loaded peas and had to take my wife in for an operation. 4 days later when we came home there was not a pea or leaf left. The deer ate them all but I enjoyed watching you eat yours.
Hello and welcome to my videos. Yes, the deer will eat the peas and vines. You can keep the deer off them by spraying with a product called: Deer Off. You mix it with water and spray the crops, then the deer won't touch the crop. You can buy it at the big box stores or garden centers. Thanks for watching, please subscribe. OAG
It cheap and easy to make your own! 2 eggs 1Tbsp minced garlic juice..1Tblsp Cayenne powder..mix with 1 gal of water and spray...after a few days it smells to high heaven but after it dries only the deer can smell it!
OldAlabamaGardener I am a little better every day, thank God. Had a setback with edema but I think we’re on the right track now and I have a check up on the seventh. Three different procedures packed a big wallop. They ended up installing the pacemaker in my abdomen, I imagine to keep it away from the coronary artery repair. Today marks four weeks, and recovery typically is 5 to 8 weeks. Thanks for watching out for me!
Thank you sir I really have learned a lot from your videos. I also live in Alabama myself . But I was always told not to fiterlize peas they said you would have more vines than peas . Got to try your method this year . Thank you so much.
I'm so sorry I didn't realize till recently of his passing. He was a true innovator in gardening. He left a treasure trove of videos we all that love gardening can learn from. He was a true Alabamean.

One question, I bought some black eye peas from the grocery store to save but I had a handful that didn't fit into the jars leftover. Have you ever tried planting grocery store beans? If so, any special instructions? I'm gonna try planting them in pots to see if they grow😁
Karin, store bought peas and beans will grow if it hasn't been treated to stop it from sprouting. The best way to find out if it will grow is to do as you say and plant a few seeds in a pot and see if they come up. Another way to be sure they will come up is to buy ORGANIC peas or beans at a health food store such as Whole Foods or Earth Fare or Sprouts. OAG
Your double cook method looks like it solves the “dirty” water problem I’ve had before when cooking them. Thank you. Looking forward to my own small harvest.
I've been a subscriber since early on and I always learn something. Today I learned how hungry I am for black eyed peas! Thanks for these videos from a city gal learning to garden and can the country way.
Sherrie, thank you for watching my video. Yep, I get to wanting some Black Eyed peas too. Cooking them in an Instant Pot is very easy and quick. Later I will make a video on canning these as dry peas. Thank you for being a subscriber to my channel. OAG
Glad to see this knowledge being shared and preserved. Up here in my part of Louisiana outside of West Monroe we prefer fresh pink eye peas but I had a black eye and a black crowder pop up this late summer in my second crop. Going to save them and plant next year. Dad likes the pepper sauce which is just Apple cider vinegar and jalapenos. We use bacon and sautee the onion in the fat. Just had some lady peas from the garden tonight. First time growing them haven't made much with the drought this year but the plants are still green so hopefully get another mess before winter.
Yep, I some times grow purple hull peas also. The drought hurt all my crops this year. I sure hope it doesn't do that again next year. Thank you for watching my videos. OAG
Hello PPM and welcome to my video. That is what I like, home grown, home cooked food. That way I know what is in or on my food. I didn't get to be 80 years old eating junk food, growing it myself is the healthiest way. Thank you for watching my video. Please subscribe. OAG
You've inspired me to grow my own black eye peas. I just love your little dance when you're doing the taste test. .....makes me wish I could really get some
I saw your video on growing pinto beans and I started up a line in the dead, dry, compact clay dirt of my small city house backyard. An amazing experiment after I beat the heck out of the hard dirt just so I could bury the beans a little. I’m curious to see how well they will do! They had trouble sprouting through the heavy soil but now a good couple bundles have popped up! I planted them thick so they worked together to push through. Amazing. It brings life back into my dead lawn grass
Hello Chele and welcome to my videos. I have found that if I don't use something to increase the volume, then I will sow the seeds much too close together, this way helps. Thanks for watching. OAG

Great video OldAlabamaGardner! I have just pulled out my snow peas here in texas. Going to give these Blackeyed Peas a try now!! Will let you know how they do.
In this video I show picking them when they are dry, but you can also pick them at the "shell out" stage and cook them using an Instant Pot or in a pot on the stove. Both ways these peas are very good. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe. OAG
Mr. Charles, what would you amend the soil with if you had no triple 13 and had no way to get any? I also prefer black-eyed peas over purple hull. The only other ingredient I add to mine is garlic. They looked SO good!!
@@OldAlabamaGardener Yes, sir. I'm just trying to think outside the box. If you had none of this available, what would you use. You never know. I guess compost would be all we'd have. And animal poo.
@@theIAMofME Field peas such as Black Eye, Purple Hull and such actually need very little fertilizer. I believe I could grow a good crop using only rabbit manure (which I have) and worm castings (worm poop) which I have. And of course it would help to be growing a cover crop on the land to help build up the fertility. That might be an interesting experiment for next year. C.
thank you for this informative video! I want to grow black eyes and harvest before dried to keep in my freezer. Our grocer has those in freezer occasionally; any recommendation on what pods look like at this stage? I love the history of black eyed peas; we especially eat them on New Years.
As my video starts, up to time mark 0:06, in the bottom left corner, you see a light green pea pod. That is the what to look for if you want the peas before they become dry. The light green stage is called the "Shell out" stage, that means the peas are mature but still plump and full of moisture. OAG
Yum! I think I need to cook up a pot of cowpeas tomorrow. I had never grown blackeye peas or cowpeas until about 4 years ago. I got one seed packet just to try. They were so amazing! Of course, they turned out to be pole type so they went everywhere in my garden but the harvest was outstanding. I've grown them ever since. I think I really will try your process with the blackeye peas and using the soil. Isn't growing your own food the best ever?! Love your videos and wish we could all sit down for a meal together some day. :-)

I apologise sir I didn't mean to offended you in anyway . I would just like to get your views on this matter please.

@@OldAlabamaGardener No way! 80? I would never have guessed that! You run circles around most 20 somethings I work with😉 And you make amazing videos to boot! Very talented man👍
One question, I bought some black eye peas from the grocery store to save but I had a handful that didn't fit into the jars leftover.

Amazing.

The sweetest giggle. I want some peas too! My Purple Hulls went wild last year. Like a jungle.
Did your purple hull peas make a lot of peas? If not, it wold likely be because of too much nitrogen fertilizer. I say that because you said the vines went wild, like a jungle. Thank you for watching my videos.

Thank you for the idea of soil mixed in the seeds , I never planted these peas , do you wait till they are dry on the vine before you pick them?
In this video I show picking them when they are dry, but you can also pick them at the "shell out" stage and cook them using an Instant Pot or in a pot on the stove. Both ways these peas are very good. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe.

@@OldAlabamaGardener I'm subscribed thanks for the videos ,good info
NOOOO! They are best at every stage except the dried bean stage.
Mr. Charles, what would you amend the soil with if you had no triple 13 and had no way to get any? I also prefer black-eyed peas over purple hull. The only other ingredient I add to mine is garlic. They looked SO good!!
Are you also meaning that I couldn't get any commercial fertilizer such as tripe 10 or triple 8?
C.
C.
@@OldAlabamaGardener I need to start a worm bin. I have compost and access to chicken manure. Just trying to plan. Thank you! :)

thank you for this informative video!
