Another great video! I planted 3 cabbage for the first time in the spring......the cabbage worms made them ugly, but they tasted good.
Hello Penny, to control the cabbage worm, spray with a product called: Bacillus thuringiensis. If you go to a garden store or the big box stores and ask for Bt, they will probably know what you are talking about. Mix it with water and spray your cabbage, broccoli, collards and any crop attacked by worms. Bt is approved for organic gardening use and does not harm humans. Thanks for watching my videos.

Thank you for your videos absolutely enjoy every one of them! How do you keep the mouth from laying eggs on them and getting them full of worms? Thank you for all your videos and keep them coming!
The only way you could prevent the moth from getting to the cabbage or broccoli to lay eggs is to cover the plants with a netting, the netting would have to be small enough mesh so the moth couldn't get through it and no plant leaves could be touching the netting. But if the moth does get to the plants and lays the eggs, spray with Bacillus thuringiensis (common name is: Bt). Thank you for watching my videos. If you haven't yet, please subscribe.

I love your garden videos, i have been gardening some 60 years myself, but find much inspiration form folks like yourself , we are never too old to learn new procedures. I just live cross county from you in Gurley. I have a question about you planting those small seedlings in Gallon pots, do you think that gives you an advantage over direct transplanting of plants from the trays into the garden . I have always had good success doing it that way. By the way I am planting some copenhagen with my all season this year,as you have inspired me to expand on my varieties. I have noticed you plant many seed types that I do and I also save seeds as you do. Thanks for the time you put into your videos, they are very much appreciated by the avid gardener.
Tommy
I believe using the pots as I do gives me a jump start on growing my plants. I will have them up pretty good by the time danger of frost is past. And if I am busy with getting the ground ready, the plants can stay in the pots for a long time.

WOW ! I WISH I COULD MOVE THAT FAST ! YOUR CABBAGE STARTS LOOK NICE AND BIG. AFTER YOU POT THEM UP WHERE DO YOU PUT THEM? DO HAVE AN AUTOMATIC WATERING SYSTEM FOR THEM? I STARTED MY CABBAGE IN THE HOUSE IN THE SPRING AND POT THEM UP AND SET THEM OUTSIDE IN A SHADY AREA.UNTIL PLANTING TIME BUT THEY NEVER WERE AS BIG AS YOUR PLANTS. THIS FALL I PURCHASED SOME PLANTS PUT THEM UNDER NETTING AND THEY ARE DOING PRETTY GOOD. I THINK I NEED TO PUT MORE 13X13X13 ON THEM.I AM IN KY AND IT IS COOLING OFF AND WE ARE GETTING MUCH NEEDED RAIN. THANKS FOR SHARING.
Hello Carol. After I pot the cabbage plants, I set them on the back patio concrete, in full sun. No, I don't have an automatic watering system. All plants, not just the cabbage plants, must have fertilizer to do well. Thank you for watching my videos.
OAG
Me. Charles, hi!
Another inspiring video! Tks Can you tell me how you combat the cabbage worm? They find every brassica I plant! Candy K in AR
Candy: That is a good question. Last year I believe we had a new worm on the cabbage and other brassicas. (I think it came from China). This new worm is more difficult to control than was the old green cabbage worm. I used to hate the old green cabbage worm but now I wish it was back instead of the new worm, at least I could control the old worm. Some people say to spray with Bacillus thuringiensis (bT), but I haven't had much success with it controlling the new worms. There is another spray, safe for humans, called Pyola. Pyola is approved for use on organic vegetables. You can buy it (when they have it) at gardens alive.com
Pyola is not a residual spray, you have to actually spray the worm with it to kill it. After it dries it is not longer effective. I an happy to answer your questions.
Nice cabbage plants. When will you be harvesting your cabbage? I need to adjust this timeline for my zone 5b (Michigan) garden.
A lot depends on the weather, if it gets cold and stays cold, then the plants will grow more slowly. If it stays about normal, I should be able to harvest some small heads in about a month. Thanks for watching my videos.

Hey Mr. Charles great tips on growing cabbage. I always grow from seed. How far apart do you space each plant?
I spaced these about 2 feet apart. If you are growing the smaller head cabbage, you could space 18 inches apart. It doesn't hurt for the leaves to be touching each other.

I know this is an old comment…but I am wondering if you would have left them in the seed trays a little longer if the other plants weren’t hanging over the cabbage…and then just plant straight into the ground?
What does the 3 P's stand for. 13-13-13 in your fertializer?
The fertilizer I use a lot is a balanced fertilizer with the three macro nutrients of 13% Nitrogen, 23% Phosphorus and 13% Potassium. Triple 13 is not a brand name, it is just the three major ingredients of this fertilizer.

I'm a new subscriber here so I am curious to know how far south in Alabama are you located. I'm in Jackson, Mississippi so I am wondering if I need to adjust any of the dates to fit my location. I'm in Zone 8(b).
Also, did you grow the seeds for those 64 days to the transplant stage in a green house or outdoors? What kind of results have you had planting the seeds directly into the garden soil?
Rabbit manure is said to be approximately a 2-1-1 fertilizer. That added to the 13-13-13 only gives you 15-14-14, so why bother adding an unmeasured quantity of a low value fertilizer at all? If you think the plants needed a higher percentage of fertilizer, why not just put in a little more Triple 13 and be done with it in one step. Personally, I grow organic and don't use commercial fertilizers but using manures, worm castings, and compost does make it harder to know if you have gotten the right amount of fertilizer to the plants.
I am very impressed with your videos and gardening skills. Being only 67 years young, I hope to be as good a gardener as you when I grow up. Seriously, I'm looking forward to your upcoming videos. I'll watch them all.

MY ANSWER: I am almost as far north in Alabama as one can get, I am with in one mile of the TN line, Zone 7. 2) YOUR QUESTION: "did you grow the seeds for those 64 days to the transplant stage in a green house or outdoors?" MY ANSWER: Outdoors, I don't have a greenhouse. 3) YOUR QUESTION: "What kind of results have you had planting the seeds directly into the garden soil?" MY ANSWER: It depends on which seed, but if you are asking specifically about cabbage, I do not plant directly in the soil. 4) YOUR QUESTION: "Rabbit manure is said to be approximately a 2-1-1 fertilizer. That added to the 13-13-13 only gives you 15-14-14, so why bother adding an unmeasured quantity of a low value fertilizer at all?" MY ANSWER: The rabbit manure gives "staying power" for the plant, whereas triple 13, will give the plant a jump start but not more than a few months staying power. *_Thank you for your questions._* I wish I were only 67 years young, I am 80 years young and still going strong. As to my gardening skills, I have been gardening for well over 50 years, that doesn't mean I know everything, but experience is a good teacher.

Sir, thanks for answering my questions. I have been gardening for a couple decades but I will learn a lot from you, I am sure, as you may be growing some different varieties than me. I liked your Newburg onion video so much that last night I ordered some seeds from Nichols. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
How did you make the soil blocks?
With my soil block maker. Google search on: OAG Soil Blocks
and you will find my video.

OldAlabamaGardener thank you!
From the way you planted the cabbage, I am assuming you do not have gophers.
Gophers are called by different names depending on where you are located. But, no, I don't have pests in my garden.

Thank you for this presentation. Would a similar application work for collards? I'm guessing it would since they are both cruciferous vegetables.
Yes, because they are both leafy vegetables. And to add, it would also work for broccoli, Bok Choy, any vegetable that the part to eat is the leaves. Thanks for watching.

Rabbit manure? Anything else that can be substituted?

In this cabbage transplanting vid you used 1/2 tablespoon 13-13-13 to fertilize. On the March 1, 2015 vid, you fertilized the cabbage transplants with 1/2 teaspoon 10-10-10 and azomite. Which method works best? Why the difference?
The triple 13 works best because it is a little stronger than the triple 10. The Azomite is not a fertilizer, so it doesn't add anything to the plant growth. Azomite is minerals only. Why the difference: I am always learning through trial and error how to better grow vegetables. And I share with you both my success and not so good success. Thank you for watching my videos. If you haven't yet, please subscribe.

@@OldAlabamaGardener Ok thanks, I just sent you another question
@@OldAlabamaGardener Do you not use Azomite at all anymore? If not, why the change of heart?

Are your 1 gallon pots a full gallon or a trade gallon(.66 gallon)? I'm shopping for 1 gallon pots now and most are "trade gallons" ("Pots are classified a nursery trade gallon pot and hold .66 gallon of soil")?
I don't know. The pots I use are left over pots where we bought plants over the 40 years we have lived here. I reuse them year after year.
OAG
@@OldAlabamaGardener Ok, I guess that means that they are "trade gallons", as apparently that's what nurseries call their one gallon pots. Thanks again for your help, have a great evening
@@MrTitanscout Until you mentioned it, I never heard of "Trade gallon pots". About where are you located?
OAG
@@OldAlabamaGardener Middle TN, near KY. Just look up "1 gallon nursery pots" on Amazon, for example. Almost all of the "1 gallon" pots that you will find are actually "trade gallons" when you read the description. It appears to be the standard for nurseries. They clearly state that they are actually only .66 gallons.
What is county do you living at ? I m looking small agricultural land to move there

Why the rabbit poop? Is that a form of fertilizer? I missed it. Also what do you recommend to keep animals away?
Hello and welcome to my videos. What kind of animals? Rabbit poop is rabbit manure. It is an animal fertilizer.

How do you make horse manure tea? I know that you put manure and water in a bucket, but how long does it need to brew, etc.?
It will depend on the weather as to how long it will take. When the weather is warm in summer it should be ready in about a week. If you can bubble it with an aquarium air pump it will produce quicker. @@OldAlabamaGardener I'm trying to do it now in zone 7a, 60's daytime, low 40's at night. I guess it will take a while. I need to plant this week, collards and broccoli. Can I mix water and manure, put it in my holes, cover with a couple inches of soil, then put my triple 13 in and plant them?
@@MrTitanscout One other thought about manure: If the horse grazed on a pasture or was fed hay from a pasture that was sprayed with herbicides, as many farmers do to control broad leaf weeds, then the manure could have residue of Round-Up in it. Do you know if the manure you are planning to use is from horses that were grazed on pastures sprayed or hay fed to them was from pastures sprayed?
OAG
@@OldAlabamaGardener no herbicides to the best of my knowledge
@@MrTitanscout If the pasture or hay was treated, it will affect your vegetable crops. As to mixing manure with water and putting it in the planting holes, I think that should be okay. About where are you located?
