My tip is if you think you’re too old, you’re not. I started skating a few years ago at 36 and I know several older skaters at my rink as well. You can still start as an adult and have fun!
I started last year at age 66! No previous any type of skating not even rollerblades. So yes its possible. Just do it within your own physical and mental limitations. I am finding it is a sport as much about mental strength as physical. I do heaps of gym/training and keep myself focused and mentally ready for each challenge. I also stop and take Time out when I find I’m not in the right headspace. Love this sport.
A note about being an older teen or adult beginner skater - sadly not every club will be welcoming. My local Skate Canada club was super hostile to me as a young adult total beginner (who was a slow learner) and after my first term of classes they literally changed their rules to prevent any other beginners over age 16 from joining (just because of me! How special I felt.) You may get discouraging comments from coaches or parents and you may get weird looks. That really sucks and I wish it wasn't that way but please don't let it discourage you. After I was effectively barred from the club I joined my city's rec department adult skating classes and it's been WORLDS more welcoming and encouraging and the classes are designed for the way adults learn, too! Now if I was to keep progressing to the actual "figure" skating level I would eventually need a proper coach as Julia mentions and again, that might be hard to find. I think I might have to go to the next town where their local club seems more open to adults. But I think being hard-working and having a really good attitude can also go a long way towards changing hearts and minds if people initially don't want to give you a chance. Believe in yourself, remember that you have JUST as much right to be there as the kids, and be your own advocate! No, you will never get to the Olympics but neither will 99%+ of skaters who started at the "proper" age so why should it matter?! Don't stay with people who insult you or put you down but know that you may need to win over some skeptics. If you really love the sport it's worth it to push!
Wow, setting rules to keep people out really sucks. We have 3 coaches at the rink, one coach was kind of like that. (No male adults (I’m 40 male)…I see where she is coming from, but it still sucked to get rejected like that) Another coach (not my coach, but one who happened to be watching our class and chatting with my coach) mocked my mistakes and falls and really got into my head. Enraged, I had a real hard fall that day that put me into a few weeks’ rehab. Oh, and the skatemoms and skatedads…Heck, I bet even my coach was skeptical at first. But I think I kind of earned their respect from really putting in the efforts and hard work. Coach says that I learn very fast, sometimes even faster than the kids, and she knows that it’s from efforts, not talent. Which I am most proud of. The two other coaches now say hi even from a distance and some skatemoms also started greeting me lately…
Oh my gosh, I am so sorry to hear what a tough experience you had with the Skate Canada club in your area. I am always amazed and saddened when I hear about attitudes like that. Skating is a sport that should be inclusive to all ages, if you want to learn, there is a place for you on the ice. Thank you so much for adding your words of encouragement at the end. I appreciate your perspective and am glad to have you here on my channel!
I agree. I'm the only older adult in a Canskate class with younger 20 & 30 year olds. Be friendly and ask occasional questions about techniques to help. Canskate is competitive an d you won't progress as quickly as younger skaters. Learning through city programs is less stressful. I'm told I'm hard on myself because I want to learn faster. You need to practice a lot but it's worth it.
Skate Canada have Adult/teenager groups classes now. It is part of every club, as far as I know. I initially learned as a teenagers (40+ yrs ago) with 4-5 years old. The club was ok with me, but it was embarrassing. I stopped after a year (I got my 10 badges and preliminary test done). Now I am back at it, specifically because there are Adult/teenagers classes, and I love it! I would make a formal complaint to Skate Canada, if this experience is recent. All the clubs I know under Skate Canada have Adult/teenager group classes now. I asked around and now go to the one thst was most recommended to me. It is GREAT! I hadctried another one over the summer that I did not like, and it is night and day. Some clubs struggle at times. Find a better one.
After dreaming about figureskating for several years I finally found a rink that accepts people older than 13 (I'm a 20 year old guy). I've had 3 lessons so far and I went out to practice what I learned about the same amount of times. Everytime I'm heading there it feels like a dream come true. I don't think this feeling of excitement will ever leave, so if in doubt and you have the possibility, do it.
I am 67 and still love to figure skate when I can, even with a steel plate with 12 screws in my leg, so my tip is to Never Ever Give Up on your passion, whatever it may be. Happy New Year !!
I don't even have ice at any time of year where I'm at, (equatorial country, though the altitude justifies it), but after watching the GP series this year I'd love to get back to even just inline skating, and maybe learning some off ice jumps just for fun. My hope is to learn on actual ice whenever I go to an exchange program in about a year, but I know I'll only have 6 months, so I loved the idea of off ice skates, and how they're different from inline skates, because maybe that will give me an advantage instead of having to relearn everything on the ice.
I love these tips! I don’t have anything to add yet as an older beginner (actually getting back to it at age 49 from when I stopped after pre-freestyle at 15 yrs old). I LOVE your suggestion to be kind to yourself! I am way harder on myself now than when I was younger. Thank you for these encouraging words and all the video lessons I’ve been binge watching!
That's almost exactly where I am, too. Stopped after pre-free skate when I was 13 and am just now getting back into it at 24. I've regretted quitting figure skating for years but was always too embarrassed to start over again as an adult that I've only just gotten the courage to even start going to public skate sessions. Glad to know there are other people who have started again with success.
Quad skates (roller skates as opposed to blades) are also an underrated option! They don't have the same blade feel underfoot, obviously, but a LOT of the tricks and skills are surprisingly similar and they tend to be more durable than the off-ice frames, and again the top skate brands tend to make quad skate boots. There's a reason artistic quad skating is a lot bigger than artistic roller blading!
Great comments about stress and frustration. I'm an older adult skater and just decided to switch from hockey to figure skates. It's challenging discovering the skills that are almost the same like front crossovers and those completely different like stopping. If possible skate during adult skate times where you often meet great skaters who can be really helpful. Also, buy padded shorts used for snowboarding or inline skating. They will protect you when you fall and you'll be less nervous.
Happy New Year, Julia! Great tips!! I just returned back in September after a 19 year break... it's been an awesome experience. Completely renewed the love I once had for the sport. I've used your videos a lot.. so thank you :) I started documenting my journey on UA-cam, it's been fun!
Thank you for this video, Julia! Didn’t realize how much I needed this until I finished watching. I’ve been frustrated with my seemingly slow progress and this brightened my outlook. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, Julia! Thanks for all your advice in my 1st year of skating. It's been fun and a tremendous help moving into the intermediate stuff. Much thanks 😊
im 21 and i just started subscribing to your channel because i really love watching figure skaters and i am really keen to learn but it’s so expensive 🥹 thank you for your videos ❤️ when i save up i’ll definitely start lessons!
Happy New Year!! Thank you so much Coach Julia for your videos. I started taking group classes in skating in the past year after the winter olympics, and your explanations are often super helpful when I practice certain skills. I now enjoy skating so much and every tiny progress is a source of joy. Thank you and wish you a wonderful year ahead!🥰
Happy New Year Julia. I love the part about skaters bring too hard on themselves…. That would be me! 😆because I’m an adult learner it’s really a struggle sometimes Loooks like Tahoe is dumping snow!!! Enjoy and thank you. 🌱💚💚
Coach Julia, you are so amazing, thank you thank you thank you, I just bought Jackson Artiste, and im learning total basics as 21 yo. Thank you so much for your videos, I will be a member of ur patreon, just gotta stabilize my finances little bit :D. Sending love from Czech republic
Happy new year! Great video. It is good to hear that off-ice skates should help me with my skating off season when we don't have ice. I would really appreciate a video on tips and ideas on where (what surface, how big area etc) to practice and what to exactly do to really help my normal ice skating. I am just a beginner learning cross overs so I am sure I would see a lot of benefit and make progress off season as well.
Happy new year! I will see what I can do about making some more off-ice skating content! I know there are so many skaters around the world who could use some help during the off season.
Thank you for the helpful tips, I skated as a kid (started when I was like 3 years old) but haven't been on the ice in a very long time (I'm 32 now). I really want to get back into it. Where I live we indeed only have skating rinks open in winter, so I was wondering if you (or anyone) has experience with the Jackson inline/roller blades mounted on a Jackson boot compared to the off ice skates you linked in the description. I would like to start out with a Jackson skate but I don't think I could afford a second roller blade pair, so it would be neat to just change out the blade for summer. Any experience would be much appreciated, thank you!
Hi, Coach Julia!! I love your videos. They're really helpful. Right now I'm working on my axel and the landing is so difficult! Could you make an axel tutorial?
I found your channel trying to learn how to skate backwards and watched a bunch of videos only to realize they are all in my local rink! I'm trying to do as many adult skate sessions as I can to work on basics without the caos of the public skate sessions lol
Thank you for the tips! I have wanted to skate for the past 5 years or so. I never did start, but I'm planning on it this fall/winter! My local club has season ice as well, so I have to wait a while... I considered getting off ice roller skates for the summer and then convert that to ice in the winter, but as far as I can see, they're more expensive than figure skates on ice... And I'm studying right now, and frankly can't afford it haha. I wanted to ask you this: do you have any experience with skaters with very flat feet? I have very flatt feet (as in no arch at all) and it has always hurt to skate. I wear orthopedic insoles daily. What skates should I be looking to get? I'm planning to make a trip to the nearest skate shop near me, which is still quite a journey, so I don't really know when that will be.
