As someone who has been trying to learn how to spin for awhile, easily the best video I've found on here. Everyone else is just like..okay throw your arms around and spin! While they do 18 revolutions. They forget what its like to be someone who can barely go around 1 or 2 times. I appreciate how you started slow and built up with the 2 foot spin, instead of "graduating" to a 1 foot spin after 30 seconds of noninstruction like everyone else!
Thank you so much for the feedback! I really appreciate hearing how my video has been received. I hope it really helps and that you can graduate to the one foot spin one day soon. 😄 Maybe I will have that lesson posted by then. You are right though, there are quite a few '''basic' spinning tutorials on here that completely skip the actual basics!! 😬
As a figure skater (not a professional) I can say, that its like only practice. At start I do only 2-3 turns, I dont know any tips, to start spin 5-6 or even more, when you only start skating, like, there is no tips. And also, I want to say, that after a 2-3 years (depends on how much you skate a day/a week..), you feel it different. 3 years ago I was like "How I need to do this?" even whaen someone said to me abouty arms, legs, blades and other things, I dont feel it. But now I understand by myself, what I need to change by myself
I know what you mean by saying pull your hands in because it's actually harder than you think and they keep saying practise makes perfect Wich is actually really annoying
Just book a slot for training session. In my local Olympic sized rink training sessions have max capacity of 4 people at the time. It costs £8 per 2h slot. Public session costs £6.50.
I don’t do lessons, so I’ve been slowly teaching myself how to do spins, gliding on one foot, and skating backwards. I have slight balance on skates from doing other sports that require balance, but I didn’t know how to do moves like spinning properly, that is until I found your channel! You make super easy tutorials that anyone can understand. Thank you for these awesome tutorials and videos!

As someone wrote below, the way you split every figure and show it in parts giving a lot of comments and explanations makes your tutorials the best from what I saw. I am also taking skate lessons and none of my instructors could explain thise things better. Also the excersises which you recommend to do are really helpful and when I practise it it turns out that it is much easier to do specific figures. Thank you:)

Hi Julia, its Dario from Italy, when I was young I used to do competition in speed roller skater, now I do it just for fun, but since 4-5 year I completely fall in love with ice figure skating! After so many tv program, youtube video and some marvellous competition seen live, I decided to begin an adult ice figure skating lessons! Unfortunatelly I live 50 km far from the ice ring and I can practice just once a week, so I am very grateful to you for your video and your nice tecnique to explain!! I had some doubt about the spin direction, but now its much more clear! In future I will disturb you with some question, ok? Thank again and have a nice day!
A very helpful video for sure. Especially with a left handed grand daughter. She can watch this before going for some practice ice time. 45 minutes later she's home watching again. You are a blessing. She loves your videos. Keep up the great work. Her improvement is amazing. A big THANKS.
I had to play hockey my whole childhood and 9 years ago I stepped off the ice and told myself I’d never step on the ice again cus I hated hockey so much but I finally decided to invest in some figure skates, got them last week and I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can about beginners figure skating before they fill up the outdoor rinks!!! Thank you so much I can’t tell just by how in-depth you went that this is going to be extremely helpful!!!
So happy I found your videos as I’m an old figure skater and I’m trying to teach my very talented granddaughter but I can skate anymore due to a rare bone and muscle problem!
I suddenly want to learn ice skating after watching Yuzuru Hanyu’s performances. I feel really happy and calm everytime I stepped in the rink but now, I want to attend class but I’m too afraid to ask my parents about it. I am currently practicing based on your videos! Thankyou for this useful videos😎🤍
For that second one, our coach introduced it to us the other day as "punch your neighbour". I've never been able to get much of a spin before but when I sceptically tried the "punch" motion suddenly it worked like magic! Next step I need to learn how to do it without making a fist. :-D
I'm a complete beginner at doing a spin and haven't fully figured it out yet. I noticed when you spin, you move your right foot slightly forward of your left but never mention it in the instructions. It also looks slightly turned in, towards the direction of the spin. Can you please go into more detail about the feet position for a spin? Thanks in advance!
So observant! I love it! I do plan on doing a slightly more advanced two foot spin tutorial, but in the meantime... yes, the right toe does turn in and push in the direction of travel. That helps keep the spin centered and gives it power.
Julia, thank you so much for your videos!!❤ My 6-year old daughter and I started learning figure-skating this January watching your tutorials! I would love to attach my girl's video practicing her helicopter spin for you to see it😊⛸️
Hi..I have just started watching your videos to help me put together a short programme for my first ever gala..I'm soo excited..and your videos are extremely helpful 👍🏽😊 I spin and jump the left handed way..even though I'm right handed..is that weird 🤔
i’ve always felt rlly weird because i’ve been skating for years and i skate as if i am left handed when in actual fact i’m right handed and i’ve never corrected my mistake nor been told to correct it
Well at this point if it is more comfortable for you to rotate leftie then just go with it, no harm done. But maybe you can experiment with learning to rotate the other way, it is a really cool and rare thing to have a skater who can jump or spin both directions!
@@peanutandoreobasset1859 i think im like this because I'm neither left handed or right handed but my right I use slightly more so i don't know why I'm left handed on the ice..
s a d i e It is the same for me. I wonder if it is because my mother was left handed and my father is right handed. I am a mixture of both right and left and my son is too. When I knit, it is easier for me to do it the opposite way too. God bless.
Do you get dizzy?? ;) I get veeery dizzy when I even spin 2 or 3 times... I'll try the technique of focusing on a point in front of me, each time I turn (but can you really maintain this when you pick up speed?). Thanks again!
The technique you are describing is called ‘spotting’ and is used by dancers to help maintain balance and position. Skaters DO Not use this as it will actually throw off a spin and slow it down. You want to keep your head rotating at the same speed as your body, I like to turn my head to the left looking into the spin. As far as dizziness, over time you train your brain to ignore some of the dizzy signals, but it takes time, just like developing any skill takes time.
Hi Coach, I have great ice here in New England and I pulled off my best two legged spin ever just this morning ...special thanks to your video instructions. I'm trying to figure eyes open or closed to fight dizzyness...
Eyes open, you need that slight visual to keep you upright as your spins increase in speed. I know the dizziness is a challenge but your brain will somewhat learn over time to ignore that.
Thank you for your input. Of course there are exceptions to the rule so you are correct. But in my 35 years of figure skating experience and 16 years of coaching experience I have found that almost every single left-handed person prefers to rotate clockwise and almost every single right-handed person prefers to rotate counterclockwise. A question for any of the experienced figure skaters out there... do figure skaters really only learn to turn in one direction? Or do you they practice spinning in both directions? Also thanks for the great video!
Historically skaters have learned to spin one way, but now the new rules say you can get a Level 4 with your spin if you spin one way and then immediately follow that with the same spin position the other way. So we will start seeing more high level skaters learn to spin both ways.
