- The Osmonds are an American family music group who reached the height of their fame in the early to mid- 1970s. Currently consisting of a duo of original members Merrill Osmond and Jay Osmond, the group had its best-known configurations as a quartet (billed as the Osmond Brothers) and a quintet (as the Osmonds). The group has comprised siblings who are all members of a family of musicians from Ogden, Utah and have been in the public eye since the 1960s.
The Osmond Brothers began as a barbershop quartet consisting of brothers Alan, Wayne, Merrill and Jay. They were later joined by younger siblings Donny and Jimmy, both of whom enjoyed success as solo artists. With the addition of Donny, the group became known as the Osmonds; performing both as teen idols and as a soft rock band, their peak lasted from 1971 to 1975. Their only sister Marie, who rarely sang with her brothers at that time, launched a successful career in 1973, both as a solo artist and as Donny's duet partner. By 1976, the band was no longer producing hit singles; that year, they transitioned into television with Donny & Marie, a popular variety show that ran until 1979.
A revival of the original Osmond Brothers lineup in the 1980s achieved moderate success in country music, and both Donny and Marie separately made comebacks in their respective fields in the late-1980s. The Osmonds have sold over 77 million records worldwide. The quartet continued to perform through their 50th anniversary in 2007, at which point Alan and later Wayne retired due to health issues; Jimmy was recruited after Alan's retirement, with the group performing as a trio until Jimmy suffered a stroke and retired in 2018. Alan's son David Osmond performed with the group in 2019. On October 14, 2019, the original Osmond Brothers quartet reunited for CBS' The Talk for their sister Marie's 60th birthday, billed as the last appearance for the lineup. The brothers performed "The Last Chapter," written as a farewell song and introduced in 2018. Donny & Marie ended an 11-year Las Vegas residency on November 16, 2019. Merrill and Jay continue to perform and tour, as does Donny as a solo artist.
Jay is KILLING it on the drums!
Always does!
At all of 17 years old!
Another great song by the Osmond Brothers. They are truly amazing. Love this 😅❤
A Rocking song by the Osmonds. Should've been a big hit single. Absolute great song.
I'm surprised no one has covered it - Green Day, Oasis. Someone like that.
Totally. I was big time into the Osmond's in the 70's. Think I was about 9 when my mum bought me the let me in single. It was ok. I flipped the 45 over and was blown away by this b side.
BINGO!! 😊
This is very reminiscent of Grand Funk Railroad. They truly had some amazing songs. I've been discovering them as of late (2022) and I am amazed with my findings. I always thought of the Osmonds just "Donny and Marie". You know, just white bread family that sang plain songs that only conservative Mormons would like. But after stumbling first with One Bad Apple, Down the Lazy River, and my favorite song of theirs, Crazy Horses, I have to take off my hat to them. They truly were amazing.
Yeah I can hear Grand Funk!
Keep enjoying! I've loved them since I was 5. Still do.
Been a fan all my life.
I can hear KISS doing this tune. Of course it precedes Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley’s band by a year
@@fredmillward4372i was 9 in 1972. 🙂 Had my first single Crazy Horses then. And 4 more after that.
Oh my golly! The Osmond Brothers rockin out like there's no tomorrow...love it! This song is on The Plan cd (album ?), and, in my opinion, all the songs on The Plan are just as awesome! Extra bonuses...Jay taking the lead and giving us a prime example why he was voted one of the top 10 drummers in the 70s! I could listen to him sing and drum all day (and im 73, not some young teenager). Thanks for sharing this video!
Loved the Osmonds since the 70's. Jay was always my fave. They're all so talented. Not to take anything away from Donny, but Merrill and Jay were my favorites on lead. So fun revisiting these songs. The Osmonds could rock!
When the Osmonds wanted to rock, they could bring down the house!
How are these legends not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Because the hard rock establishment that makes up TRARHOF sees them as squeaky clean bubblegummers, that's why!
I just wish that someone would play them this song and THEN see if they still brush them off!!!
I sent this UA-camr a copy of their Crazy Horses album (one you should check out). Here's what he had to say about it:
ua-cam.com/video/LqMCqip016E/v-deo.htmlsi=T_sPdGv5wGkIRQyw
They’re Christians.
I wonder about this as well! They were wholesome and not into sex or drugs just good ole Rock and Roll!
Hold Her Tight was the best ROCK style song they ever did. Never got the air time or recognition it deserved.
This should have been a hit single.
I loved this B-Side as a child. I had the 45.
@@billkeithchannel Me too. I always preferred it to the A side.
Agree.
That could've been Great!
another great Osmond song with Jay singing lead Love it
Loved the Osmonds since the 70's and Jay was always my favorite. Underrated by many but boy could they rock it out! This is the side of them that I really liked.
I totally agree with you@@viking22
He shares the lead with Merrill on this
Wayne is killing it on guitar! I reckon Wayne and Jay were the rockers of the band. They should have done more like this. Awesome!
Respectfully remember Merrill sang lead on most of the brothers big hits
Wayne, Merrill and Jay
This Song should have been a #1 hit!! It also should along with several other hits get them in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame!! Come on powers that be heat us & make it happen. 🐶❤️
Loved it when Jay got to sing lead!! He was such a hottie but then they all were. ❤️🎤🎸💙🎤🎹💜🎤🥁💚🎤🎼🧡🎷🎤🖤🎸🎶🩷🎤🎵😊🎤🎸🎷👍🏼🎶
How is it that the Osmonds were never in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but the Jackson’s were put in there twice and never sang rock? It’s all rigged.
From "The Plan" album, one of their best yet. Such an underrated album, I think because of it's religious message, however in today's world, a very much needed message.
I've been to hundreds of concerts during my 64 yesrs, seeing everyone from Willie Nelson and Loretta Lynn to Van Halen, KISS, Springsteen, and everyone in between, yet I don't think I've seen anyone who truly loved performing more thann Wayne!
As a boomer who grew up on songs like 'One Bad Apple' I'm finding it hard to wrap my head around the Osmonds Rockin out through Marshall Stacks
Agreed..
I know it’s hilarious. I’m a Gen X so, I always think of the Donny and Marie show. To see the one brother with a Les Paul Custom in his hands is surreal. Check out their video for Crazy Horses, it actually rocks out, better than this tune.
The original group of older brothers really wanted to be a more "legit" rock combo I think. They got somewhat forced to go super "bubblegummy" with little Donnie up front, etc. Songs like this show they had enough chops musically to have done it.
It evident that these guys pushed each other. Having family or a group of friends and musicians who take a role in seeing you progress is invaluable.
I remember this was one of my first fav rock songs as a little girl. Stopped in to take a listen & this is still awesome. The Osmonds were such a special part of my childhood. Thx for all the memories guys.
When I was a kid in junior High School my Dad got tickets for one their concerts for my sister, and I dreaded the idea of the experience, but when we got there I was blown away.
The Osmonds were outstanding performers!!
RIP Wayne. You will be missed, by a lot of your fans, me includes.
Best drum performance ever by Jay!
The Osmonds awesome amazing performers and singers Thank you gentlemen for the awesome memories I will always cherish them for the rest of my life 😊😊😢😢❤❤
Nobody can deny The Osmonds can ROCK!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was 5 in 1972, and all I listened to was my older sister's Osmond albums. For me it was closest thing to hard rock I knew...until I heard Calling Dr. Love by Kiss in 1976. But I still love these songs. Phase Iii, Crazy Horses and The Plan are albums I still listen to...along with Megadeth. Go figure. The Osmonds were very underrated and a band I will always cherish.
I've loved the Osmonds since I was 6 years old and I'll be 60 this summer. Now i listens to this song while riding my exercise bike in virtual reality, anywhere in the world that has google maps. It's perfect for it, lol.
Yes I agree I'm 58,I remember the Osmonds in 1972, when I was 6,my sister Leslie would play it back then, she passed away 2017,was57
I played The Plan to oblivion, I had to buy two more copies 🤣 I STILL know every word to every song on it.
This track absolutely rocks, one of my Ossie faves. God, I feel like I'm 14 again. 😭😭
dont take it ... too easy
ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME...NOW. 👍
Why aren’t they in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
I remember my sister getting this for her first lp. For some reason i remember this song more fondly because i was the "little" sister. Puppy love of course is great - but this one was my song - and i was maybe 4 😊
Jay is awesome on the drums
I totally forgot about this song....one of their many treasures 😊
The Osmonds are awesome singers I remember in 1972, when I was 6,my sister Leslie would play back then she passed away 2017,was57.💐
It's was nice listening to them back then.we all need more like them now.
The Osmonds were rockers at heart🤘🏻
Wayne is playing on a Gibson custom les paul when they went for about 750 bucks in '72 and even cheaper when you bought a used one. Now used has become vintage with a whole new market. These go for 5,000.00 and up now new.
It might kind of be the same price adjusted for inflation
Not sure if it’s my kind of music yet, but these guys are great.
I've never heard this song before. The chorus kicks ass! I've also never seen a family who looks so much alike.
Yes, one of the many I watch every night before I go to bed.
Love the Marshall amps!!!!!
i think this was recorded in england marshall superleads and full stacks osmonds? really? ok cool
great
In Australia this was the A Side and the first time I heard it I loved it even before the song had finished. Such an underrated song and really should receive much more attention than it has. It's only in the last year I have discovered the Osmonds with this and Crazy Horses. I bought Yo Yo because I was curious about a song with that title. I then heard Crazy Horses and couldn't believe my ears. It was a great rocking tune. Unfortunately these days people align the Osmonds with that drippy Puppy Love stuff and forget they could rock out with songs like this.
How comes I never heard this song, blows crazy horses out the water!
I loved the whole album "The Plan" with their little intros on it Still have this Album
Wayne is my favorite ❤
When I was a massive fan aged 8.
The Osmonds were so good! It’s nice to see people discovering them free from the bias that existed back then. Since they were decent people they were dismissed by a lot of stupid people.
They are super amazing!
RIP Wayne Osmond
What a jammin' tune!
I loved the Rankin/Bass cartoon as a child too.
The best❤️
Обалденная группа 70-х, оставляют только позитив в душе своей музыкой, их можно слушать всегда, при любом настроении, что можно не с любой музыкой!..
oh my lord the harmonies in that chorus
I Remember The Osmond's Brothers Concert I Was At In 1972 They Are So Awesome
"The Plan" - суперальбом, настоящий шедевр.
As fun as "Down By the Lazy River", and " Crazy Horses"!
Love this track. Great video. 🤗🎤🎸🎶
Love it!
Jay is really killing it on the drums. 💞 LUV this video.
Never ran with less. Sure glad I can write a sincere letter ^^
they were very talented musicians & performers.
Jay had a great voice similar to Merrills sound
Hardly surprising seeing they were brothers
That's definitely Merrill singing too. They shared the lead
RIP Wayne 😢
Fantastic
Merrill is an excellent singer…but I find myself preferring Jay's lead vocals, personally.
Mind you, 36 hours ago, all I knew of them was "One Bad Apple" and "Puppy Love" (and that Donny & Marie theme tune), so all subject to change. I mean, I'm still reeling from hearing "Crazy Horses"…
If you get a chance, check out their song (Would it Make You) Think. A real hidden gem of theirs.
I have `The Plan` in my vinyl collection, but didn`t realise until now that Jay sang lead vocal.
Thanks so much for posting this! I only found your channel tonight, when searching for Your Leaving Was the Last Thing On My Mind...and that was a beautiful surprise too😊🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Rockin! 😍
How do I still remember the words to this song?😊
UNA DE LAS MEJORES MUESTRAS DE SU CALIDAD MUSICAL.
The Elvis suits were their brand. But if they had performed rock music in jeans and tshirts it may have helped them break away from the former Osmond perception.
This song is so underrated
As an adult looking at this, they really were a fantastic group. My older sister & her friends would make me lip sync Puppy Love, so it’s taken me a few decades to get beyond that. 😉
I remember collecting my $3 allowance, and I went to buy The Plan at the PX in Mannheim, Germany. I loved that album. My favorite songs were I Believe, Crazy Horses, Let Me In.... As a group lead, I preferred Merrill; his voice was so different but balanced. And of course Donny; I had all his albums. When we returned to the USA in the mid-70s, my cousin took me to one of their concerts in Springfield, Illinois. That was the first time I had been to a concert. My dad even said then that they were one of the best. He said though that one thing against them in the industry view was that they are Mormons. I asked him what that? Never mind. But still, I like their music.
That beautiful FAT chord on "anywhere"!
LOVE IT!💖👍🎶🙏
Love
No! More Like,Rare Earth meets Grand Funk!😎🤩❣
THE OSMONDS ARE A GIFT FROM GOD!❤🙏🎶
Well, from "the prophet"
Holy cats! That's a KISS song, two years early, by virgins!
I THANK 😊 YOU FOR SHARING YOUR LOVELY VIDEO 📹 ❤ 💕 MERRILL Osmond ❤ 😍 MERRILL 🐻 🐻❄ 🧸 XOXO ALWAYS LOVE ❤ 😍 YOU 🐻 🐻❄ 🧸 XOXO
The Osmonds rock... Who'd a thunk it???
Ah qué hermosos recuerdos, pero siempre pensé que ésta canción la cantaba Merrill, me equivoqué, era Jay mi Osmond favorito.😅
Nice tune to discover and consider for The Saturday Morning Band (Banana Splits tunes, Scooby season 2 chase songs, Josie & Pussycats, Archies and Fat Albert songs). It kinda fits with all that.
Jay was really something on the drums .
I love Jay!
I believe that The Plan is the best SOUNDING rock record ever made.
I couldn't stand them when I was 9. Still can't.
How is this 56 year's old 😳😳😳😳😱😱
Crazy bug music!
Dare you to find an actual live “rock” performance (this is obviously mimed) by the Osmonds without a whole backing band of real musicians behind them. They played, but not proficiently enough to sound like their “rock” records, on which studio musicians played, or to sustain themselves alone on stage like a “real” band. Just facts.
Same for many bands then, and now. There wasn’t the technology yet for film and live audio to be broadcast quality then either. The Beach Boys had dozens of musicians on stage, and still do.
@ The Beach Boys were really a recording project after they’re surfing days. And really a composition project of Brian Wilson. Very different story. But no; The Who, Zeppelin, Queen, Yes, B.O.C, Allman Bros, Skynrd, Grand Funk, Genesis, Deep Purple, and the thousands upon thousands of other real rock bands, then and now, an eternal list, don’t have a second band behind them playing the same instruments. You’re talking about large bands, but that list goes on and on, too, with Chicago, Sly and the Family, Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Santana… all real bands with real members who weren’t playing low in the mix because they weren’t top notch. Your reasoning is an excuse.
BRO!!!!!
Lordy, they were sweating it!
Song was released in 1973? Donnie looks much older than 14/15 here. Underrated band. Too wholesome?
The Plan their best!
Interesting to see Jay singing lead from the drums.
I really don't remember any of there hit songs except PUPPY LOVE, I honestly don't know if they had many top 10 songs
Studio version but still cool.
Корнелюк Игорь не просто так зазвучал, чувствуется влияние Осмондов!..
I,ll give them 💳💳💳 the Osmonds are very talented they can play their own instruments ✍️✍️✍️ their own songs and can sing I always heard that they wanted to do more 🪨 and 🥐🥐🥐🥐🥐 it,s too bad that they never got the chance to because they couldn't,t shake their bubblegum pop image they,re really very good
Thank You Friend
Jay and Merrill split vocals on Crazy Horses but seems they said hard rock song...
👉Jay!
Grew up with them and don't really remember them getting much air on radio after Lazy River and the ones they did on their variety show, I watched occasionally. ???
