Thank you so much! I tend to belly-flop into most of my hobbies (especially between 2020-2022 😬). For some reason, I’ve been able to maintain a little more restraint than usual. It’s definitely hard. I’m curious to see how I’d answer these questions next year!
I'm finding that the inexpensive pilot kakuno is working the best with my high maintenance glittery inks. I add a converter and they have been working without issues. Awesome video - really enjoyed it.
ooh, that is good to know about the pilot kakuno! I've been tempted to reserve my shimmer inks for my dip pen, but it would be nice to be able to use it in a fountain pen without worrying about clogging. So far, they have clogged my lamy safari and both my F and M pilot metropolitans. Thanks for watching my video, and taking the time to comment. I appreciate you! 💗
I really like your approach, it’s very mindful. I also want to use and enjoy what I have. Last month I had 9 pens inked and it was overwhelming. I just cleaned them all out and haven’t even inked one up yet (but I will). Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us!
Thank you so much! 🥰 When I first got into the hobby, I’d ink up a new one as soon as I got it. It wasn’t until I started watching currently inked videos, that I realized I could rotate them. But then I felt fomo for my uninked pens. 😂 What pens do you think you’ll be inking up now that they’re all clean and ready to go?
I sent you a message but I thought people might be interested in my brown shading ink recommendations. Akkerman SBREBROWN is incredible. Also, noodler's pecan. Just lovely.
You're the best! Thank you so much - both of those colours look so warm and cozy! And, that Akkerman SBRE ink bottle is gorgeous! 🥹 I'm adding both of those to my to-try list! 🤎🥰
I love how mindful you are about your collection of pens and inks! This is definitely a goal of mine, and it's quite inspirational to hear someone talk about successfully curating a collection where you don't feel deprived by having limits on what you buy. Fantastic video!😍
Thank you so much for your kind words! This is definitely a more “successful” example of being mindful (I write this as I stare guilty at my stash of art and yarn supplies). It has taken multiple hobbies and lots of impulse buying 🫣 to get to a point where I wanted to change my approach. For now, this is working, but I am genuinely curious how things will be a year from now! 😅
I enjoyed the video very much. I love green inks too, and I would recommend you to try Evergreen from Diamine. Its a beautiful dark green with a reddish-brown sheen to it. Absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing this recommendation! I just looked it up, and this colour looks like something I’d love! For some reason, my mind when to Christmas tree and I was thinking primary red, but this looks earthy and gorgeous! I’ve added it to my to-try wishlist! Thank you!
I'm late to the party, but this was a lovely video! can't wait to see more! :) as someone who has an overwhelming collection, I appreciate the thoughtfulness you have about using your pens and inks!
Thank you so much. 🥹 The feeling is mutual! For what it’s worth, I appreciate your videos and usually doublecheck your channel to see if you’ve done a review of an ink I’m interested in before I decide if I want to get a sample or bottle of it. So, thank you for all that you do. ☺️
the free shipping temptation is so real, it's something I struggle with as well. thanks for leaving all those links in the description, I'm not planning on buying right now but I love window shopping.
I still struggle with free shipping, and probably will continue to! In the ink example, shipping was equivalent to a bottle of ink, so I justified it as “paying” for shipping by adding on an extra bottle of ink. 🤦🏻♀️ I also love window shopping. I’ve checked out those pens on my wishlist so many times since seeing them and watched a lot of pen review videos. 😂
@@Terrible_Hime right?! I mean, I probably wouldn’t have gotten so close to it if I didn’t add a bunch of other ink bottles. I really only wanted one colour that I couldn’t find at other retailers. 🫣
Interesting that what lead you into fountain pens is kind of the same motivation as my own. For me it's about trying to reduce waste in my writing needs, both journaling at home and at work. I just ordered my first pens to try: twsbi eco, lamy vista, and pilot prera. Right off I just got an archival, waterproof black ink to use while I figure what I like penwise. My main colors I would need are black, red for editing, I'd love a purple, and I wanna try a brown. The brown specifically I will prob order along with a lamy lx marron if I decide I like the vista and wanna try the more upper end pen. I want clear pens so i can see the ink color easily, but that lx is so gorgeous imo, I'd love to have it with a matching brown ink - IF i like the lamy.
Ooh! Great choices for pens! 😍 Even through black ink felt like a boring choice, it was one of my first purchases as well, because I knew I would use it most often. I kind of wish all ink were water resistant, because I’ve dropped water on some of my pages and it completely washes says what I’ve written. One of my favourite brown inks lately is Robert Oster’s Toffee. It’s a little warmer than FWP’s Writing Desk is when writing with a fine or extra-fine nib. Wishing you all the best on your fountain pen journey!
Hi Alison, I’m totally with you there for inks! I bought 7 ink bottles from Atlas during their fountain pen day sale, which was amazing and then of course I need to buy enough to hit free shipping lol!! I loved making my ink shelf for my pretty inks, but adding all the inks I’ve bought to date makes it very hard to showcase them all in that bookshelf and I don’t want to buy another shelf. So that’s helping me to stay away from buying bottles and hoping I can do ink swaps with friends because I can make space for samples lol! And I also feel the same with you on shimmers because I hate the clogging but because I don’t mind using medium nibs…I’m still in danger of wanting to try out shimmer inks. It was fun watching your video! This is the third time I’ve watched it but I was able to focus myself better to listen closely to everything this time through! Haha😅 Thanks for sharing your journey with us!
Thank you so much for watching my video, and taking the time to comment. That free shipping limit is dangerous! Despite claiming that I wouldn't let that be a barrier, I missed out on two Yoseka restocks of Lennon Tool Bar's Sesame Oil because I didn't want to pay to ship one item. I caught myself adding multiples of the cute cat and shiba erasers they talked about on their channel and then realized that I was doing exactly the same thing I did with that FWP Black Friday sale. 🙈 Of course, now I feel sad about missing out on the ink because it looks beautiful and I love Sesame Oil! We're in the process of building wall-to-wall shelves in the office, so I might have more room to display my ink bottles (they're currently scattered in drawers and plastic bins). I don't know if I should be relieved or scared! Thanks again for being here. I appreciate you (and I love your channel!)!
@@LittleCocoStudio That's so exciting! I would love to build shelves on my walls, too, but that can be a bit dangerous with how heavy ink bottles can become if put on a hanging shelf. The sesame oil sold out so fast from Atlas Stationers, but I'm sure it will come back. I wonder if it is like an Ina-Ho dupe - is that why so many people went crazy over it? XD Aside from it being named after a delectable oil that is used in our very own lovely Asian cuisine xD And thank you so much xD I'm so happy you like my channel ^_^ I have a very colorful YT channel haha 🥰 You have a lovely cozy channel going for yourself, too! And for us xD
I am inspired by how well you control your purchasing. I started using fountain pens about 2 months ago, currently trying to find the perfect brown ink for me and fighting the urge to buy full bottles. A few samples arrived the other day but I want to try Taccia Tsuchi and RO Caffe Crema first before I decide. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for taking the time to comment! I resonate with your desire to find the perfect brown ink! That was me for the first 6 months of my ink exploration journey. For me, it was blue ink, and I bought a few bottles before I switched over to samples because I didn’t end up liking the first bottle of blue ink I had bought (Diamine Tudor Blue). Both of those colours you are about to try are gorgeous! I’d be interested in hearing what you decide on! ☺️
Excellent video. One ink that makes my soul happy is Noodler's Kiowa Pecan, but there is a new name for it now, if you are okay with Noodlers. And two great inks even though they are a bit on the higher end is Montblanc Irish Green and Toffee Brown. you can always get them from Yorkdale. Maybe Sherway Gardens.
Thank you for the recommendations! Toffee Brown looks like a nice warm brown and I love the name of it. I used to work at Sherway Gardens when I was in high school 🥹 Now, you’re making me want to visit that mall again, although I think it has changed a lot over the years. As for Noodlers Pecan, a friend is going to be sharing an ink sample of it with me, and I’m interested in trying it.
Great video! I was waiting for you to swatch a dark purple ink (that's my favorite color right now). I took note of your favorite blue and added it to my sample wishlist. It's gorgeous!
Thank you for your kind words! Asa gao is so pretty and after swatching it in this video, I realized that I need to ink it in a pen asap bc I miss it! 😅 Do you have a favourite dark purple ink that you’d recommend? 💜
Yes!! I would love to see your response! I’m actually quite excited to reflect on how things have changed one year from now. Things are already so different compared to this time last year!
Thank you!!!!! 💞 I should have mentioned BPC inks, as they have become a favourite brand overall ever since you introduced me to them. 🥰 Too bad they are hard to access in Canada, though I recently found one retailer who sells samples of it!! Have you tried Extradimensional Umber? Even though it's very similar to Writing Desk, I'm obsessed!
@@LittleCocoStudio I haven't tried the Extradimensional Umber! I have that on my wish list though haha. I love Writing Desk too, it was one of my first brown inks!
You have had a very thoughtful and considered approach to your journey. I love it. I’m an EF/F person and I have had no issues with shimmer clogging yet. Though the majority of my shimmer inks are Diamine and that may be a contributing factor as I find they perform really well with consistent distribution of shimmer. I love your picks on your non- wishlist too!
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I’ve heard so many great things about Diamine inks that I’m not surprised that their shimmer inks seem to behave pretty well. Actually, a pen friend gave me a sample of Diamine’s Spiced Apple, and I admit that it has been behaving well in my Pilot Metro. ✨
I'm not sure if you've tried it but I enjoy Pilot Iroshizuku Yama Guri. It's a brown ink that has a golden sheen in large swatches. Depending on the nib, it can look black-brown like in a steel EF Kaweco nib to a medium brown in a Conklin F nib.
😍 Thank you for the recommendation! I think I was so focused on the discontinued Tsukushi, that Yama Guri fall off my radar. Now that I'm taking a second look, I'm going to add it to my to-try list! 🤎
Thank you for your video. You gave somethings to think about. I have about same number pens and I was trying not to get caught up in buying process that newbies go through. I have decided to enjoy the fountain pens I have and not buy because it’s pretty and shiny. I have pilot vanishing point on my wish list but I wait a little while.
Thank you for taking the time to comment! I’m glad that you’ve found this video helpful and thought-provoking. I hear you about slowing down. When I look at my purchase history, I got a lot of my pens in a relatively short amount of time! 😅 I hope you enjoy using the pens in your existing collection, and if you do get a VP in the future, that it is worth the wait! 🥰
I had exactly the same experience with FWP Lady Rose 🤦♀️ I have a stub nib coming soon so I might try it in that, but it’s definitely not great for fine or EF nibs. I love your approach to mindful consumption. I am definitely guilty of wanting ‘all the things’ and adding to cart to make free shipping 🙄
Thank you for stopping by! I’d be curious to hear what you think of Lady Rose with your stub nub! I’ve never tried a stub nib before. I hope it saves the ink for you! That free shipping thing gets me every single time I shop online. Sigh. I appreciate that some retailers do it at all, because I know how hard it can be to compete with Amazon, and it means they’re eating the cost of shipping somehow. At the same time, I’ve definitely ended up adding extra things to my cart that I’ve regretted. And I rarely ever hit the threshold exactly - I usually blow past it. I don’t know if it’s realistic to never try to hit free shipping, but at least I’ll try. Or at least I hope that I don’t end up adding an ink I haven’t really researched or tried at the last minute just to get feee shipping (cough *Lady Rose*cough).
Hi, great video. I am a big fan of greens and browns. Rikyu-cha is also a favourite of mine. Also Robert Oster Moss. But for browns the best are Faber Castell Haselnuss and Pelikan Brilliant Brown. Lady Rose is the only ink I ever threw away, soo awful! I had the feeling I am writing with dirty water (after you clean the nib and it is still wett).
Thank you so much! Yay, it sounds like we have similar taste. :D I just looked up Robert Oster Moss and -- WOW! 🤩 What a stunner. I haven't tried Robert Oster, but I seem to be drawn to a lot of their inks, at least when I look at samples online! As for the two browns you shared 🤎 - I'm definitely adding them to my list. They both look like they lean on the warm brown side, which is what I prefer. Thank you - I'm going to keep an eye out for samples! :D Also - I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggled with Lady Rose. I read so many ink reviews, and thought I wouldn't mind it being on the lighter side, but I did not enjoy it at all. Still dirty nib water is a really good way to describe it. 😂I might try to paint with it, and try it in a broader nib before I give up on it.
Really love hearing about your approach to inks and pens! Not sure if you have mentioned it in a previous video, but what is the Superior Leather zip pouch that you have?
Thank you so much! The zippered one pouch is called The Superior Labor Pen and Wallet case which was a collaboration with Wonder Pens (a stationery store based in Toronto)! 🥰
I enjoyed your video, your answers were very interesting! The brown you showed is very pretty, I have a few ones (Kaweco Caramel, KWZ Scented coffe) but I have to say: nothing shades so beautifully like Robert Osters Caffe crema 😊. When you mentioned not to like shimmer inks in pens much, I had to smile because I also don’t like them. I have a few for Christmas time but use it with a Pilot iro-utsushi , easy to clean.
Thank you for taking the time to comment - it makes me even more excited to try Robert Oster’s Caffe Crema some day, if i can get my hands on a sample. 😊 I also used my FWP’s Sparkling Champagne for writing Christmas cards last year, and it felt so festive! I haven’t had a reason to ink it on another pen since, though, so I guess it will take me a while to get through that bottle. 😅
@@LittleCocoStudio thanks for your answer. Oh you have a whole bottle of the ink … I‘m really glad I ordered only samples of shimmering inks. The Caffee Crema is one of the few bottles I have. It isn’t as dry as Avocado or Dusky Pink from RO (in my opinion…) It’s a shame that I can’t get my hands on FWP or BPC samples 🫤
Ooh! That is good to know! I would love to try one in person before investing in one. I have a few samples of very pretty shimmer inks that I’ve been hesitant to use because most of my pens get clogged when I try 😅
on blue ink i don't know that you ever try on shin-kai from iroshizuuku. i got one and i really like it but i drop them and break. they really deep deep blue like deep sea..... for myself my main ink is purple ink i addict on murasaki-shikibu from iroshizuuku too
Both of those colours are so beautiful! I haven’t tried either, though, I’ve been so impressed with how the entire line of Iroshizuku inks feel in my pens, that it’s been hard not to compare every other ink to them! 😅 Since I was looking for a bright blue, shin-Kai wasn’t on my radar, but now it is. It’s pretty. 🌊 Did you end up getting a new bottle of it? Purple inks weren’t on my radar, either. But lately, I’ve been intrigued by them. 💜 Murasaki-shikibu looks pretty, and Yama-budo has also caught my eye!
Thank you for taking the time to comment! I love Lie De Thé! What a gorgeous ink. It was lovely in my Kaweco sport, but I had some trouble writing with it in my Pilot VP - not sure why. Have you experienced any issues using it with certain pens? I bought this ink and Éclat de Saphir because Wonder Pens recommended this ink brand for my vintage pens. I really hope I can get my dad's old pen fixed! It's not looking good, but I've got my fingers crossed!
@@LittleCocoStudio I haven't had any issues with any pen I have put it in and i have had it in a couple of fairly dry writing extra fines, but it is mostly paired with my brass sport in my planner and is very wet in there. I do know that when seemownay first got her vanishing point she had problems with some inks not working well.
@@optimalwellnessyoga hmm, that’s interesting. Maybe I should give it another go in my capped pens to see how it goes. Initially, it rivaled Writing Desk as my favourite brown ink when I got it, but I stopped reaching for it when I had a negative experience with it in my VP. I took my VP to a store at one point to ask them if my VP could be the problem. That’s when I learned that Herbin inks can sometimes be on the dry side. I still have so much to learn! ☺️

Yesssssss! I am so excited!
Appreciate you so much!! 🫶
I recommend Sailor Yurameku in Amamayoui is a gorgeous brown with shading
Ooh!! Thank you for the recommendation! I just looked it up and it looks like such a pretty, soft colour! I’ll add it to my to-try list. Thank you!
That is the cover I got for my Hobonichi! Isn’t it cute! 🥰
Yes!!! It’s soooo cute!! 🐼💗
Also - I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggled with Lady Rose. I read so many ink reviews, and thought I wouldn't mind it being on the lighter side, but I did not enjoy it at all. Still dirty nib water is a really good way to describe it. 😂I might try to paint with it, and try it in a broader nib before I give up on it.
Very well done video, thank you!
Thank you so much! And thank you for sharing my video, as well! I appreciate you! 🥰
@@LittleCocoStudio you are most welcome! :)
It isn’t as dry as Avocado or Dusky Pink from RO (in my opinion…)
It’s a shame that I can’t get my hands on FWP or BPC samples 🫤
I find Benu pens very wet and good for shimmer inks
Great video. My go to brown ink is Herbin Lie De The, which is a beautifully shading golden brown ink. It is the ink I use every day in my planner.
@@LittleCocoStudioI’ve only tried a couple, but I have not been fond of J Herbin in my VP for some reason. It felt quite dry.
