I have a few tips for anyone struggling to limit their stationery purchases! I’m really new to fountain pens, but I am NOT new to diving headfirst into a hobby and amassing quite a collection in a short period of time. So, here are a few suggestions:
    1. Go on a “slow buy” - limit your stationery purchases to 3-5 items per month or allot a budget for yourself each month
    2. Make a dedicated wishlist - instead of obsessing over the idea of a new item, write it down on a wishlist and give yourself a cooldown period of a week to a month before purchasing. Most of the time, you’ll probably be over it by then.
    3. Make shopping harder for yourself - unlink your credit card info or limit your access to apps like youtube or instagram to stay ignorant of new releases
    4. Make peace with yearning for the next new thing - if you’re anything like me, you’ve saved up for a new item only to finally have it in your hands, appreciate it for a few days, and start looking for something else to want. If this happens, most of the time, you’re not looking to fill a hole in your collection, you just want to want things. The wanting is more fun than the actual acquiring, and in those cases, you have to be ok with forever wanting but never getting.
    5. Beware of duplicates - to quote a UA-cam comment I saw under a Hannah Louise Poston video, “when I think, ‘wow, I need another one of this item’, I’m actually just realizing I’m appreciating the item. There’s no lack, I have the thing I need. I just need to reframe that as gratitude for a great thing instead of trying to get more of it.”

🙋‍♂️Hi Liane! I have to admit, it gives me great joy to see younger generations enjoy using fountain pens as much as I do. I consider myself lucky as I was able to attend school abroad and fountains have been in my life since I was eight, that is over 55 years ago now and counting. My collection has grown over the years to the point I own at present about 750 various fountain pens. I am also fond of extra fine nibs, as my handwriting it small and any other nib sizes distort my penmanship. My favorite pens are mostly Japanese and some Italian manufacturers like Montegrappa and more recent newcomer Loclen also small pen companies like Gravitas. I wish you much luck in your pen journey and hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.
    Kudos from NYC.🗽

Thanks for your response! I can't believe you own 750 pens, what a collection! I've yet to try Montegrappa, Loclen and Gravitas, I hope to get acquainted with them as I start attending pen shows.

I’ve commented before about me being new my first fountain pen being a Lamy , now I’m going down a rabbit whole and have to have all the pens, inks and accessories! Thank you for your time, and your videos!

Wonderful video, as usual. I loved hearing about how different elements are shifting for you, and it's really nice to hear that other people's preference are frequently in a state of flux, too. I'm in a stub nib phase and have been for a few months, but just the other day I was going through my inks and picking colors that I think will go best in my EF nibs again. 🤷‍♀ I'm also so glad you're eyeing Spadina Rose. I don't see all that many people mentioning it despite how popular Ferris Wheel Press is, and it really is one of my all time favorite colors. Thank you and @seemownay for putting all this together. ❤😍

Our preferences shift based on our moods, for sure! I typically don’t reach for stub nibs but then I’ll have a moment of non-stop stub writing when inked with a beautiful shimmer ink. I can’t wait to watch your video response!

Hi Liane! I’ve been catching up watching all the 8 questions tag responses! I really enjoy your videos, Liane! Would you please let me know what pen case you have in this video? Perhaps you have a video where you show all your pen cases. I live in Victoria, across the water from Port Angeles. We don’t have the best variety of fountain pen focused shops. I’ve learned the hard way that i should physically try pens before i purchase them online. Thank you Liane! ~kari

    • @lianelikes
      @lianelikes  6 місяців тому

I have learned that, too! If I can, I want to try out pens in person before I purchase them. I've let go of many pens just because I purchased them online without having had the opportunity to try them out in person to see if I liked them or not. I hear Bainbridge Island is welcoming a new fountain pen store, closer to you than it is to me, I think!

These questions are fun to watch, I guess these videos brought me to you in my recommended ❤ I especially love the first question. I was introduced to them by the art community, specifically PeterDraws. Started exploring them through Every Day Carry videos. Like a decade ago, I was big into the ECLP hype, It has been interesting to learn from these #8penquestions videos that so many folks were inspired by those old channels I used to watch and buy stickers from. It's also been refreshing to find so many creative female creators, I'm so used to the more mechanical and "practical" approaches to fountain pens from the male creators I watch in the EDC space. So thank you to you and @seemonay for these questions, growing the creative fountain pen community, and exposing me to the fountain pen ladies of the space ❤ Maybe I'll finally find my Holy Grail ink outside of a black or blue (which those folks tend to gravitate toward)

Thank you for answering question 7. I never thought of tying a cap on my collection to a feeling rather than a number. That was an epiphany for me. I tend to deal with that feeling of overwhelm by putting pens into a pen purgatory of sorts. Those pens can be gifted to others or sold, which I'm lazy about, but it does help with the feeling of overwhelm. It will be helpful to consider how close I am to that feeling before purchasing a new pen. Just because I have a slot for a pen in my case, doesn't mean it should be filled! Thank you. 💗

Inspired by you, I purchased the Opera Rose ink from St. Louis Art Supply. I inked my new Platinum Shape of Heart with it and I love the combination. I think I’m falling for those reddish-pink browns. I’ve always loved the brown shades, so this is newer. Surprisingly, this year I’ve found I really like writing with a Stub nib. Previously, I’ve only enjoyed a Fine or Extra Fine. I purchased a TWSBI with a Stub and I love the way my handwriting looks so dramatic. My grail is a Homo Sapiens Dark Age or Dark Matter. We are going to Italy in July and I hope to get one there.🤞

Love your Videos, and I did like very much the original 8 Pen Questions.
So I'll do as I did then and answer those Questions in a Comment, since I do not have an active Channel and do not want to make any Videos:
    1. When and how did your Fountain Pen Journey begin?
Same as last year. At School, 2nd Grade Primary School, by the very beginning of the 1990's.
    2. Favorite inks in the beginning? What are your go-to inks now?
For decades I just used Cartridges. Mainly Royal Blue Pelikan, since that was the standard Ink in School and the only colour alowed to be used. I then did not have a second pen to use different colours, so that was it for the first 7 Years or so. Then, at High School and University, I continued that, but had then more than one pen at a time, so I used cartridges of other Colours, still mostly Pelikan, since that was what you could get at any store... My favourite colour was Turquoise, and still is.
About 2 years ago I discovered that Ink converters exist, so that It's possible to use bottled inks in relatively cheap fountain pens, made for Cartridges. For a good year then I stopped using boring Cartridges. I acqired 12 to 14 different ink bottles, not all of them tried yet. First where two bottles of Graf von Faber Castell Ink. Olive Green (as a standard substitute for black, which I find boring to write with) and Gulf Blue (to get away from Royal Blue). I have also purchased different shades of yellow, blue, Orange and green since. From Diamine and Herbin trough to Sailor and Monteverde. A bottle of Kaweco Paradise Blue is already History, all used up. See, Turqoise, my favourite... Now I'm on Yellow, and when, in a few weeks, the bottle gets empty, I'll change to orange.
Normally I got three to four Pens inked, and a fifth one in the Car since last week. There with a Cartridge (bleu calanque, Herbin) because that's the most convenient for a much loved Kaweco Sport.
    3. How have your ink and pen tastes changed over time?
I drifted away from Converter Pens more to Piston Fillers (Pelikan M 200 and TWSBI's) and I shifted from Blue more to geen, as long as sort of pastell colours, still do not like standard green Ink. I still don't like Royal blue anymore, and Red isn't my cup of tea neither. Any red... although I own a Bottle of Ancient Copper, which I discovered not to like as much as initially supposed. And I still don't spend money on black ink.
Nibwise I have changed from fine and Medium towards Broad and Stub, because that brings more of the Colour to the Paper.
    4. Are there inks & pens that you have yet to try but would like to?
Many. Mostly such pens I cannot afford. Inks: I got what I need, and the deal is, that apart from some Cartridges to try out, I do not purchase more bottles before one of them gets empty. Many of the now trendy Inks are either difficult to get for me or similar to one I own already. So, more isn't a priority.
    5. What is your Holy Grail Pen?
Still the same: Visconti Homo Sapiens, but the white one with the leather on the back. Sold no more, sadly. But no way to afford anyway...
    6. How many pens do you currently own?
Don't know. About a dozen Kaweco Sports, Two Perkeos, A Kaweco Dia, Four Pelikan M200, five TWSBI Two Parkers, Two Kreuzer, a Geha and one of unknown brand (ebonite, bad shape), two more of unknown brand, old, maybe italian. Not all working. Some received as a gift and some bought used. (...)
    7. Do you have a limit on pens (or inks) in your collection? Is it a number? Is it a feeling? When do you know that you have reached your maximum?
I do not have a maximum of pens. Money is the limiting factor. Inks: I got enough to write long journal entries for years. Maximum reached, its less than 20 (small) bottles.
    8. Consequently, what would you do if another pen/ink came along?
Inks I would enjoy seeing in Videos.
Pens: Depends on what it is and the Price. I only buy what is either Interesting or I consider as beautiful enough to spend my money on, and only what I can afford. There are some pens in my collection, so beautiful or expensive I did not dare to use them
