    i said this on the detransition vid but transracial was a term originally coined by *black adoptees of white adoptive families* to express the racial disconnect they experience from being black but being raised white
    *as a interracial adoptee myself* I cannot express 1. how very real this feeling is and how important it is to talk about 2. how absolutely disgusting it is that this term has been co-opted
    it is *so* important to discuss what it does to a child to feel so disconnected from themselves and their family, to navigate a world that sees you as something opposite than you feel internally
    that was the whole reason the term was made and now we can't use it and the conversation is overrun by that piece of shit

      Please only answer if you feel comfortable responding, but I’m a bit curious as I was thinking about adopting. Do you resent being raised by parents who are of a different ethnicity? If you could choose, would you prefer the same parents, but of your own ethnicity? I’m really genuinely interested whether it would be bad as a couple of an Asian and a Caucasian, if we were to adopt, for example someone of South American heritage.

      When I was a part of Evangelical Christianity, I knew a white couple who adopted a black boy. This black boy would insist on wanting to wear dresses and act like a princess and more.
      They prayed every day for him to not be LGBTQIA+. Not a single day goes by where I don’t think about that poor child. I cannot imagine what he has to go through while being possibly LGBTQ and black with a white family 😢

    What kills me about Oli citing “The Road Not Taken” is that the poem is famously misinterpreted to be about individualism and the significance of choice and nonconformity. If you read and pay attention beyond the last stanza, it’s about how people will self-aggrandize our choices, and how said choices are often not that impressive or significant. Like, in the poem, the “road less traveled” is actually just as grassy as the other, and the choice isn’t that significant, and it’s only when looking back that the speaker says they will declare that it made a difference, basically creating a narrative after the fact, which is ironically the same thing Oli has done.

    • @dackattac

      it kinda sickens me how he’s only getting platformed as a detransitioner purely to showcase the toll his surgeries have taken on his face. like “ooooh, if you let your kid transition they’ll wind up looking like this if they change their mind!” as if the bulk of that didn’t happen squarely in his cis phase

    He references the Robert Frost poem but the whole point of that poem is that there is no road less traveled. Both paths were practically indistinguishable and he made an entirely arbitrary decision to travel down one of those paths thinking that he could just come back on another day to try the other path. However, the character in the poem never returns and spends the rest of his life mulling over whether he made the right decision and essentially fabricates this fake mythologized version of the story where one path was clearly less traveled and him choosing that path made all the difference in his life.
    In my opinion the poem is about fake narratives we construct to create meaning in our lives where there is none. It's how we cope with the festering uncertainty and regret that comes with not knowing if a decision we made when we were younger might have forever changed the trajectory of our life or if it had absolutely no effect at all. We convince ourselves that our life follows a narrative, that our decisions are important but what if they aren't? What if it's all random nonsense and the meaning of our lives actually has very little to do with these sorts of decisions?
    The irony is that Oli is doing exactly what the character in the poem is doing. He doesn't actually care about the truth of both roads. He only cares about how he's going to retell the story later. The phrase "I took the one less traveled" is not only insincere but it also has this sense of self-importance. It's as if you think you're superior to all of the sheeple who took the common path. It's contrarianism for the sake of contrarianism and the worst part about it is that the character as well as Oli aren't even contrarians. They're posers. They're grifters. Robert Frost's character has no idea if the other path is less or more traveled because he never even bothered to return and see for himself. It just wasn't that important to him at the time. I don't think transitioning is that important to Oli. Getting a surgery seems to be just as arbitrary to him as choosing a path is to the average person. He only talks about it because he can turn it into an interesting origin story.

    I would like to say that transracial is a very real term for people who are trans-racial adoptees "child of one race or ethnic group placed with parent(s) of a different race or ethnic group. An estimated 2 million children in the United States were identified as adopted in the 2010 census" (National Library of Medicine). What is so frustrating and insulting about people like Ollie London is that they treat this term as a joke and further marginalize an already marginalized community of children/people who were in trans racial adoptions

    And the fact he "stopped" was the "Road Not Taken? THAT's the path few people travel down?
    That train left the station A LOOOONG time ago.
    And this story is so insane and anecdotal I don't see how much assistance it can be to anyone except (maybe) people toying with the idea of $300 k worth of plastic surgery, because he's a walking PSA against that.

    I saw a comment that asked whether it would be okay to just get surgery to look like another race. I'm also interested in knowing, not because I want to do such surgery, but because the topic came up more than once in my life before. I don't really understand why people feel the need to look like someone else to feel beautiful.
    To be fair, people have been doing that kind of modifications for years already, and it's still pretty controversial yet accepted. I'm referring to the bbl craze that had started some years ago that attempts to replicate the bombshell black woman's body. There's also variations of cat eyeliner that mimics the look of pheonix eyes of East Asians. It's all for the pursuit of beauty that we replicate each other despite silencing the other. If we were better at accepting ourselves and those who look a little different whether it be skin tone or facial features, I think it wouldn't be such a touchy subject.
    In the case of Oli London, however, there's a distinct community that claim to be transracial, taking on a little more than aesthetic to claim an identity that they simply do not have. It is not necessarily an ethnic group's looks - though that certainly contributes to ethnic experiences - but the society and culture that it develops and resides in that determines its identity the most. Unlike gender, where variations of which can be found within a single body, ethnicity depends on your direct, physical community. You cannot be what you haven't been immersed in, and even if you were to adopt certain customs, it would still be after you've formed your previous core worldview. You can be adopted into a community, but you can't claim it as yours first. That's colonizer mindset.
    Maybe we're more interested in the lookism of it all, but I think it's important to compare it with the video's topic. For the record, I'm Filipino and think it's fine to find inspiration in the beauty of others to emulate through yourself. But it's also important to be proud of your own beauty. In a better world, we wouldn't have to replicate others to feel beautiful, but here we are anyway.

    • @0b.d0
      @0b.d0 6 місяців тому +9

      While I'm at it, I may as well add that the identity of ethnic groups is particularly sensitive because of globalization and long histories of colonization that fragmented the identities of these "ethnic" groups. In a globalized world, it's difficult to claim or accept a heritage that you were not born in. As we discover the pitfalls of a white cishetero normative society, we can turn back to our roots to discover a heritage that makes more sense as people. The current homogenized culture that we participate in today is, after all, one that lacks humanity in favor of personified individuality.
      The story of the transracial is interesting to me because it seems similar to what I had to go through as a Filipino American. It seemed that I was pulling from a world that I did not belong to, but still had ancestors and family in and could still feel welcomed because of it. I think that there is a longing or desire for these people to be transracial - despite having no ancestral roots (but maybe some unfortunate ancestral history) in these cultures - because of the fragmentation of our modern globalized society. It's not necessarily a problem, but a symptom of our society. People need a sense of belonging, and transracialism has been the result.
      Just some extra thoughts from my own experience, I'm clearly not an expert.

    • @moustik31
      @moustik31 6 місяців тому +7

      Oli London's idea of "becoming another race" is the last installment of w. supremacy/colonisation. It's aligned with a century-old tradition of culture appropriation, culture vultures, blackfishing, etc. It's just another way to repackage the same old racism.
      Changing one's race is a political move made to benefit people financially, sociologically, etc. Racial grifters want to have access to "better treatment" in their target racial community, than the one they were receiving in their original one. Plus, "ambiguity", aka proximity to w. is their main appeal in their target racial community.
      As far as I know, gender transition doesnt work like that at all. People transition to benefit their mental health and they usually do it at a great cost. Like most queer people, it costs us way more to come out/be more visible/transition than to keep assimilating. That's why these 2 situations are only similar on paper, imo. I'm a Black woman and I would get LESS visibility/opportunity than a "racially ambiguous" grifter but I get MORE opportunities, when people perceive me as straight.

      I think that first, people forget that makeup exists (not clack/yellowface) and can hint at features looking differently (like u mentioned with eyeliner). second, I feel like it’s more of an interesting conversation for those who are multi-racial, and they feel like they belong more to certain groups (like if someone was half-white and half-chinese and wanted more than to wear makeup-a deeper level than physically “belonging”).
      I’m an asian person adopted by white parents, so that sense of wanting to belong to a community through looks is what I’m thinking about, and what you’ve touched on. Transracial, where trans is not “transform” but rather “across” is the point missed as transgender is still seen as a physical state of being, rather than mental or spiritual levels. (I don’t get to have this conversation about these topics since I’m in a red state, but I hope that nothing is so poorly expressed that it reads wrong!)
      But for aesthetics (not a deeper reason) and this video, what Ollie did is basically permanent yellowface.

    • @sonnentausnest
      @sonnentausnest 6 місяців тому +3

      @@StarsinRain I'm transgender. Transgender means: Gender identity and gender assigned at birth (you can say biological sex at birth) do not match. In that sense, "trans" does mean "across", across genders, and it involves body and mind.
      Transitioning is then the way into the physical and social states that match the gender identity.
      I'm not sure what you mean by "transgender is seen as physical state as opposed to mental or spiritual"? /gen question, not criticism

We all thought he was a grifter and/or extreme fetishist who was just latching onto the viral popularity of this group as a way to get attention, and I remember plenty of fans predicted that in a few months he would have moved on to some other wild claim, which is exactly what he did.

    This is how I've been feeling about Oli too for the past couple years. I had to block him (amongst other people) because he was making me so angry with his leeching onto anything he thinks he can make money off of.

    I'm so glad to have discovered your channel. So many youtubers whom I've followed for years don't even have the courage to say the word "Palestine" and it disappointed me deeply, as I thought they cared about human rights. You're awesome

    When Matt accidentally says "Jack Frost" instead of "Robert Frost," I picture that freaky 1998 CGI snowman writing terrible poetry that Oli finds 25 years later and goes, "Oh. Wow. Profound." 😂😂

    The thing about high school friend reminded me of a couple years ago, my favourite cousin, who has a really long history as an ally and fighting for lgbtq rights, was sharing Jordan Peterson stuff because he had fallen down antivaxx rabbit holes, without any awareness that JBP is one of the biggest purveyors of anti-trans garbage in Canada (cousin and I are both Canadian).

    That poem is about how both paths in the wood are the same, and the speaker will later look back and make a narrative about his past choices that valorizes them bc thats what people do, regardless of whether it actually meant anything substantial.

    You are such a good stand-in for the viewer who’s on year x>5 of discourse as a layperson who has opinions but defaults to those who know more about a given topic. Every time I catch an episode I like that you allow the guest’s expertise to shine instead of pretending or believing you know everything

    The part that really gets me is that he wasn't JUST trying to become Korean, he was trying to become a SPECIFIC Korean person. That's disturbing even without the yellowface aspect. Literally the plot of Parasite.

    I almost feel bad making fun of Oli London, because he's clearly not well. A well-adjusted, mentally stable person would not completely alter their face to look like a k-pop idol just to get attention online. But the damage he's done to the trans community outweighs any sympathy I have for him.

    Transracial people do actually exist who are of one race but got adopted by another race and thus grow up looking different from the rest of their family.
    There is a korean woman named who was adopted by a black family from the South who wrote a book about her experience. Her book is called "Too Much Soul: The Journey of an Asian Southern Belle" by Cindy Wilson.
    Overall, transracial people don't like that Rachel Dolazel and the likes have become the face of transracial.

They're entertaining and well presented, I like your style and you come across as very natural, no affectation, the real deal. I'm sure I'll continue enjoying your channel, may you continue to grow and be successful, all the best.

    The first time I remember seeing Oli London was in like 2016 or something. The era of those "living doll" documentaries on UA-cam. He also had a doc and I believe he claimed he wanted to look like Ken? I'm not sure about the last part, but I don't remember him saying anything about wanting to be Korean.

    4:25 That's a terrible admission to make, anyone with any sense and sensibility should stay well clear of the "rag of lies and excrement" that is the Daily Fail.. please do not give them the views, the sooner they close down, the better for mankind!
