Developed in 2016 by Dan Hunt, the Hunt 1000 is a bikepacking route and annual event (in Nov) that links Melbourne to Canberra, and traverses some of Australia’s most beautiful high country. The route incorporates amazing campsites and historic alpine huts, provides a limited number of resupply points, and mixes in challenging hike-a-bike sections, as well as river/creek crossings. The route changes each year for the event.
Encompassing the Kosciuszko, Alpine and Namadgi National Parks, the Hunt 1000 route takes you into the heart of these remote and uniquely Australian alpine wilderness areas. The Australian Alps have a geological history dating back 160 million years and are unlike regions commonly associated with the term alpine, such as the Andes or the Himalayas. Rather, the Australian alpine region is essentially an uplifted plain made up of grand plateaus surrounded by eroded steep valleys. The nature of the landscape means you will spend hundreds of km’s on top of the world. But, what goes up must come down and you’ll work hard for those high trail views.
Weaving together a network of fire trails, alpine paths, gravel tracks and country roads, sometimes you’ll wish you had a randonneur with slick 32’s, other times you’ll wish you had a fat bike, and sometimes it just doesn’t matter because its too steep to pedal. The trail conditions and the elevation profile are about as varied as the alpine weather can be. This all combines to make the route a beautiful challenge.
On the back roads and trails your unlikely to have any company other than your thoughts and the occasional wild brumby however, when you pass through the small towns the friendly locals love to have a chat. If you make it to Omeo in time for an afternoon beer then stop in for a pot at the Hilltop Hotel.
Note: the route cannot be completed during the Australian winter and should only be attempted during the warmer months between October and March.
Amazing!
I was doing some building on my block in Benambra when the cyclists were coming through town this year. Was cool to meet some of you, and chat to you, at the Hilltop Pub, and Benambra General store. Hope I can get fit enough to do this one day.
Incredible, now I want to organise one too in my town (if anyone is from Córdoba, Argentina, reply me jajaja)
I wish. Argentina is so beautiful! Cheers, from Canada.
I'm an Aussie cyclist who grew up in the NSW high country (Jindabyne and Thredbo) but now living in the US. This film makes me want to jump on a flight home right now. Great work. I want to do this ride 2021.
I'll wait to see you this years will be amazing 🙏😇
Can you please make your content inclusive and accessible to everyone by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning please? it is very hard to enjoy your content relying on only the auto captioning sadly (I'm Profoundly Deaf)
This is an absolutely fabulous video. Great work and the event seems great also :)
the best thing can happen on those trips is not to know which day it is! great experience!
I spy a Chris King headset. Once a BMXer, always a BMXer!
I feel a bit ignorant that I had no idea Australia had this type of terrain and conditions. Great film.
You make a great comment because Australia is known for it’s beaches and deserts, yet few people realise how many mountains we have. It’s a huge country. Come and explore.
@@tonygreen8221 we've got absolutely everything (and just to add to the list) including tropical (Daintree) and temperate (Tarkine) rainforests and everything in between
Surprisingly, one of the best bikepacking video I have ever seen. And I have seen many.
This video shows an area of Australia I had never seen before, I must have watched too many episodes of 'Aussie gold hunters"! Beautiful mountains and a great video and event - well done!
Will the HUNT 1000 be on this year ? And how do i get the details for the ride ?

What a great video! Thanks for sharing. This is most certainly on my list of things to do.
This is so nice, would be an unreal experience. Definitely something I’d like to do
Belated well done to everyone that took part. Boy did it look tough going. Some of us Brits are a little uneducated as I had never heard of the Australian Alps 🤔🤣. Definitely got another Sub now.
Beautiful video. Thank you for sharing your hard work.
The challenger is the frame of.
Mate this is amazing! So glad I came upon this video! Hoping to join The Hunt in 2021 ❤️
great, will you be doing another this year or next ?
Fantastic great job ... big hello from Potugal
Nice one for sure. Do long-distance walking projects months in a row with my walkingtrailer called ROADTURTLE. But often use bike tracks for inspiration
Nice ...hope it runs in 2021
Wonderful photography… so so voiceover. Thanks for the inspiration !
Inspirational. I completed the Munda Biddi trail solo in WA, a few weeks ago. Thank you for creating the video. I will ride this 2021 - hopefully COVID allowing.

Truly inspirational video. I love Oz.
Thats awesome....."squared"
Um nobody mentioned the cabin from the epic movie " The Man From Snowy River"
You mean Craig's Hut?
Wow, didn't know that was in this video. That is one of my favorite movies. Do you know what time index?
Beautiful!
What headlight setup is that in the opening scene?
It’s the klite Bikepacker Ultra (not sure if it’s first version or V2). klite.com.au, it runs off a dynamo hub.
Wow, what an awesome ride. Definitely on the bucket list. Is there a 2020 ride?
Tim Dart there will be nothing in 2020.
Awesome Video Dan
Looks amazing. Beautiful country side. This is on my bucket list.
So inspiring. Great video.
Super bike video 👍🏔🚵♂️❤️🌞
My partner and I are planning to cycle over the alps this year and although we will not follow the route of the Hunt 1000, we will cross paths with it a couple of times.
What time of year is ideal to attempt this? Presumably at the end of May/start of June it will be freezing and snow?
Anyone got any advice they can share?
By far the best time is autumn, late feb and march. Forget june!
@@healthycycles6078 Thanks for the response, mate. We're actually up in Queensland now! We've cycled about 5000km since we considered that an option. Unfortunately that ship has sailed!
Again, thanks for the reply.
@@VeloObscura looks like you are having a great adventure, interesting time to be out there! Happy and safe travels :)
It can snow heavily from May onwards. I have a tradition of going out for first snow and have walked through a half meter in May. Can last a few days before it melts too.
Mad as a sack of badgers. Chapeau
Any trip in 2023 2024 2025?
Every Year :)

Wow. Great Video. Thans for sharing
I would like to join you one day
Hi...from Mizoram 👍🤝😁😂
Спасибо за видео!) Очень круто!)
Looks amazing.
Epic
Great video. One question. Are there spiders?
Yes but they're not really a worry
what sort of bikes did you use?
Priyantha Bediwatta most of them are using hard tail MTB
I am Indian too
If you have back problems, I use hard tail with seat post suspension. Full sus is heavier, steals storage space, and probably not essential.
appreciate the video. Nice to see Australian terrain I hadn't, but could you please, like with some many other UA-cam travel videos, lose the distracting, teeth-grinding, generic "rock" music? No need for any music in this much less whatever's here.
I'm an AAWT hiker. If you blokes were seriously minded you would come off Hotham towards The Twins and Selwyn, down through the Woonangatta, across Howitt, King Billy, Down Brocks, along Low Saddle to My Sunday and then to Jamieson Licola Rd to Licola. Although, its probably too tough going for the padded shorts.
From what I understood from conversations with participants this year, they came from Mt. Skene down to Dargo, then up to Omeo. I think they skipped Hotham altogether.
next time just cycle mate and enjoy it. Don't make any more films please.
?
Orlando skip the cheap gluten pasta next time will you 😑😮😨😃
This would be such an awesome ride to do 👍
I can't believe how light these guys are travelling. A great adventure but way too hard for this soft old rider.
