540 MILES || A Colorado Trail Bikepacking Documentary
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 сер 2020
- Award winning film about a 64 year old's 540 mile bikepacking journey across the Colorado Trail. I hope this doc inspires you to get outside and experience God's creation. It is one of His many gifts to humanity.
"God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him." John 1:3
Production Background:
This documentary took 21 days to shoot, months to edit, and took up nearly 2 terabytes of footage and files. Filming came with many challenges such as long tiring shoot days, late nights, bike crashes, close calls with search and rescue, water shortages, and sore legs. But every bit was worth it in the end.
Directed, Shot, and Edited by Davis Yates

Loved this!!! Thanks for all the effort you put into making this masterpiece
Glad you enjoyed it Ryan! Thank you for the comment. I'm a fan of your work!
You guys both made awesome videos!
Very inspiring!
Definitely great job with the filming total quality 🎥👍
"...you need the challenges to know the joy..." This 67-year-old is preparing for a similar adventure in Maine and I so needed this. Thanks, Dave.
@Eric Anderson leaving for my journey September 6th!! My soul is ready…
4 years ago my son and I ran into an elderly gentleman at a back country alpine lake in southern Colo, it was about 6 in the morning and we were both shocked to see this guy (he mustve walked past our camp very early without us knowing it), turned out this guy was a very knowledgeable fly fisherman, so we picked his brain for an hour about the discipline, I asked if he fished anywhere else, like the Madison or any of the innumerable great trout waters in this country and he had fished many of them and he said they were all worth fishing if a person gets the chance but he added something as we were saying our goodbyes that has stuck with me since and that was this; he said "son, you can fish your entire life in Colorado and it will never give you a reason to leave." I feel the same way now about Colorado mountain biking, I know there are many awesome places to ride bikes all over the world but Colorado has all you could ever want in my opinion.
So true!! It’s amazing how much there is out here, I still have barely scratched the surface
I hiked this a few years ago. One of the coolest experiences of my life, would love to do something like it again
Just found your documentary. Your monologue at the end is very accurate. It can’t all be rainbows and unicorns. I heard long ago that when you go looking for adventure, don’t complain when you find it. Embrace the suck.
One of the greatest biking films I've seen recently not only concerning the story but also the direction and the picture quality. Hats off to all of the heroes of that great story!
You look in great shape for a 64 year old man. I remember being a volunteer on the trail in 1987. We were the crew which linked up and finished the trail near Durango. We who were from flatlander states had a new feeling in our chests as we hiked to the trail from our camp each morning. That 13,271 foot peak must have been really tough on you. I only got up to a little over 10,000 feet
elevation when I was there. Your story will inspire more seniors to give it a go. Colorado's mountains are so beautiful. Thank you.
Dave is definitely in great shape, he shows it's all about mindset! I'm grateful I got to capture the adventure and tell his story.
OMG!!! It made me cry - absolutely loved it
At age 57 I bikepacked from Silverton to Durango. It was 3 awesome and HARD days. You are so right that the San Juan range is crazy beautiful. 61 now and hope to do all the segments while I can. Nice job!
64?!? No way! Dude looks like he’s in his 40s! WTF? Great job, sir!
That’s funny, you must e 12. Dude is definitely in his 60s, or older looking. He didn’t even do a continuous trail.
@@randyholloway920 You probably did o lot of "continuous trails" in your life, right? What have you accomplished, Randy hollow way?
@@Arthur-Silva WTF is wrong with people! always looking for an angle to sour others achievements! Good response to Randy mate, who's now probably considering his response from the sofa!
@@mattydarbs8720 people who rides tens and hundreds of miles on their bikes see some strange things in this video: new different shirts, clear bike and ammunition, only one night stop.
I do not say, the old man cheated, but he probably lived in a trailer and his bags were half empty.
Fun fact: exercise literally slows down aging
Great filming and editing, Davis. I rode the trail in 2010, ages 56. Took 20 days, 18 riding and 2 rest. One of the highlights of my life.
Sounds like an amazing adventure! The trail is a work of beauty.
Davis Yates indeed, the work done each year to maintain it is extraordinary.
Hey Davis - your videography, editing, and production on this video is SUPERB!
Congratulations on this excellent video. The Colorado Trail mystique radiates thru this entire documentary!
My man! What an adventure it was to create this with you. Thanks for trusting me to tell your story🤟
Hello Dave, you are a true inspiration. Thanks to your story I got up from a bad spell and now doing better.
Hopefully will see more adventures from you soon :) take care.
What a great inspirational video, Dino Dave! Keep it up and good luck on your next adventure!
Amazing Story. Incredible Videography Davis.
Gave me goosebumps. Great documentary.
That was amazing Davis, Thank you!!
As I prepare to do the eastern half of the Trans America Trail from Colorado to Virginia this summer, 2023, I found your video among so many. My buddy Ryan Van Duzer is an incredible adventure cyclist as well, and I see he commented a couple of years ago about your beautiful trek on the CT. Your passion and journey to self-fulfillment at age 64 is truly inspiring. I will be 65 this summer when I take on the Trans Am and seeing your emotions and the beauty of your ride will be with me as I pedal east. Thank you for the wonderful documentary that saw Dave succeed from end to end!
Absolutely amazing and an inspiration
Heartwarming story. Well done.

Congratulations on an incredible achievement. I’m a fairly serious mountain biker and I know some of those summits are killer. Thanks for sharing your journey!
Very enjoyable. Best part: One can not know Joy, unless One knows Sorrow. 🚴 🏔
What a great documentary. Thank you for the inspiration I just started riding 2 months ago. These gives me motivation when I’m out there riding.
Great film Davis. Captures everything about the experience. Congrats on the accomplishment. I did it in 2015, 2 years after I retired.

Amazing adventure and great documentary.
Absoloutely Awesome journey, Well done Dave!
This short film as so fantastic. To hear your amazing personal self reflection of what you experienced and what you gleaned from this was beautiful to listen to. Also beautiful to hear your wife supporting you takes it up another level too, such a gift from GOD. Appreciated this work you did, so stoked that you were able to do this. Ride on.
fantastically done on every front!
Dude!! What an inspiration you are! I can only hope that at 64 I’m still able to ride they way you do. Awesome video and to do it all on a hard tail... I tip my hat to you sir!
Amazing and very inspirational to watch.
Lovely guy. Great film. Scenery to die for. Thank you for sharing this ❤️
Super Awesome Davis!
Dave ~
What a great story and journey ! Thanks to all who helped document such a great video … well done in so many ways. If you ever think about doing it again … holler at me!
Wow! Keep on biking! I'll meet you out there when we are in our 80s. Congratulations.
Amazing job! Definitely one of the best videos to showcase all the CT has to offer!
Thank you very much.
Superb film and an incredible effort. That trail sure looks tough in places! I did Land's End to John o Groats this year at the age of 61 but that was a walk (pedal?) in the park by comparison. Very well done!
Such a inspiration! hope to meet you all on the trail some day...God bless
Beautiful film. My salutes to Dave for his Enthusiasm and courage to take on such a huge mission. I'm less than half the age of Dave's and I can't even imagine of doing it, at least not at the moment. It was really inspiring to see him. And Davis Yates, man what a beautiful cinematography and story telling. Brilliant work.
Breaking the trail up and enjoying the scenery resonates with me for my 50th Birthday I cycled 966 miles UK Lands End to John O'Groats cycle in 8 days. I never really looked up. For my 60th in three years, I want to ride it off-road for over a month stopping at places of interest. Priorities change as I age.
Great adventure and documentary!!! And it´s true: God has given you the necessary strenght!!
Congratulations Dave, Cindy, Inspirational Kudos
As a Director and Filmmaker myself I must congratulate Davis Yates for bringing this amazing journey and of course Dave Baumenn is definitely an inspiration for many of us. He completed 540 miles through the hardest terrain and extreme conditions of weather etc. Great job and please keep on rocking guys!
brought me to tears, man, you are such an inspiration !
Love the video! It really makes me want to get on my bike and see what's around the next corner.
You sir are Awesome! Very nice!
This the the second time I have watched this . Both time Dave I have seen so much beauty
Without the drone shots this is just an average film about a guy riding his bike. With the drone shots it's a remarkable story and one that inspires anyone to want to have such an adventure. Well done!
Love the story and the videography. This is one bike ride that didn't get cancelled by COVID-19. I'm glad you went for it and succeeded.
Simply amazing.
Beautifully filmed and edited, thank you for sharing. As a fellow recently retired 63yr old this was inspiring and I share your feelings about being out in nature and challenging yourself…. if we don’t do these things now we never will! I took up running a few years ago and am now doing trail Ultra marathons/long distance cycle rides and have all the same feelings that you so eloquently speak about. 👍
Wow Dave! Great video!
Thanks for this! Just had to add the Colorado Trail on my bucket list!
Just great !!!
Super voyage, super vidéo, Merci Bcp
Great film, thanks for taking the time to document this.
Thank you for watching!
lovely...and well done, not just riding it but filming it as well!
Beautiful film! Very inspiring!
One of the most beautiful films I have seen. I am a fan Davis Yates! Congratulations Dave and Cindy for the adventure of a lifetime. Indeed, the greater meaning of life.
Thank you Nilabh! I’m glad the deeper meaning came through.
Beautiful - you’ve just given an idea !
Gorgeous documentary.
Dude, this was incredible to watch. So glad I took the time to sit down and watch this uninterrupted. Really made me "feel something". This guy is an inspiration, and I loved watching his story unfold.
And of course, freaking gorgeous footage, man!
Thanks a lot man!! I appreciate you making the time to take it all in. Grateful I was able to tell his story-- he's definitely an inspiration and had a lot of fun making it despite the challenges.
Beautifully told beautiful story.
Badass man! I rode the trail a couple years ago when I was 20. It was the hardest thing I had ever done. The CT changes a person. In the best ways possible.
Absolutely beautiful. In every sense of the way. It is also nice to see real people, doing real adventures. Well done to you and Dave. Awesome job guys..
Thank you Mario! It was a privilege to create.
Every once and a while I watch it again
I'm 58 and feel great and bike every day off your a great inspiration
I hope to do some bicycle adventure like that one day
Thank you for documenting
So inspirational and beautiful. Amazed at the drone shots.
24:16 - What you said is the definition of Type 2 fun :) I experienced it myself travelling 1100km over the Rockies in Canada a couple of Summers ago.
What an unbelieveable short documentary. I just stumbled on this as im always looking for great inspirational stories and challenges. This film was awesome. Just an incredible adventure, ridiculous scenery and truly fantastic people. What a great couple. Thanks so much for sharing what you did to support each other. With everything going on today in our world its nice to see such a great story involving great people. Loved it.
I'm Cindy, Dave's wife, muse, and Chief Support Officer :) during the Colorado Trail adventure. Thanks so much for your kind comments. I'm so very happy you found our story inspiring.
Outstanding! Thank you for this incredible video and your existence here on earth. I'm going to do this too.
