Bikepacking the Barrington Tops in search of a hut - NSW Australia

  • First weekend out of Covid lockdown we hit the road for our first bikepacking trip in months.
    The weather forecast was absolutely rubbish but I didn't care, I loaded the bike with heaps of wet weather gear and went expecting to get wet. Luckily the forecast was wrong and we didn't get a drop of rain. In this video I carry extra beers in for everyone with the plan to surprise them with a little 1000 subscriber party. That didn't really go to plan but was fun anyway.
    Thanks for watching.

      You are spot on! Just hit summer now! It’s starting to get hot here which isn’t ideal. I was planning to do a few trips in our winter but we had Covid lockdown which lasted 4 months and I couldn’t go outside a 5km radius apart from work. All my winter plans went out the window. We do have the Snowy mountains which can’t be ridden in winter so hopefully I can get a trip in down there this summer 🤞
      Enjoy the cooler rides 👍

    Cracking video Tim. Would love to join you guys sometime. Vivid reminders of walking up Tomalla Road first thing on Day 2 of Thunderbolts back in May. Definitely hike-a-bike. Shame Thunderbolts didn't allow a bit more exploring up on the Tops. We didn't get back to Gloucester until after dark anyway. Definitely serious terrain. Were any of your crew on gravel bikes? Looks a bit rough in places but doable on 48mm with my Redshift stem I reckon.
    How's the new set-up at Moonan Flat pub looking?

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  2 роки тому

      Thanks Nick! Anyone is welcome to join as long as they can handle me stopping a fair bit to get some shots! Part of the fun for me is making videos.
      I’m not sure what Tomalla road is like but if it’s anything like any of the other hills up into the tops I image it’s steep! Glad I’m not the only one to hike a bike 😂
      No one was on a gravel bike as we’re all still kinda new to this. Nick was on a rigid Kona unit X which probably fits most into the bikepacking category. I was on the old rigid 90’s bike. Neither of us thought it was too rough. I’d be more than happy to do it on a gravel bike if I had one. I think I’d like one but first I need to get some smaller, lighter camping gear. I’ve actually got some crazy ideas about replacing the dropouts in my old mongoose and converting it fit my 27.5 carbon wheels off my good bike. That will lighten the bike heaps. Then I want to put some drop bars on it. I thought it would be a cool experiment and if it works it could be a cheap gravel bike for me 😂
      As for the trails though, when I plan these routes I have no idea what the trail surface will be like until I’m out there. If you did join us there is the chance it could be rough. We would all have to deal with it though. I don’t see an issue with that. If it’s slow going who cares. Still fun!
      Lastly, when I planned this ride the pub was meant to be open. I thought it would be good to finish at the pub and that’s why I started at Moonan Flat. The pub has been renovated and was meant to open late October but they pushed it back. I think it opens this weekend, 4th December. We didn’t get to check it out but there was construction workers there and they place was looking nice. Next time!

      @@jvonemolap0921 haha, the backpack is pretty savage. It’s comfy but heavy. last year I bought a hip pack and have been using that ever since. It fits my camera with the 24-70 on it and a microphone. It also has a bottle sleeve that I put a small 16mm prime in. Since this video I’ve also purchased some new and smaller gear. G'day! Loving the bikepacking vids, thank you. About to start bikepacking with a trailer myself. There's a guy hauling a trailer in the vid. Can you advise which trailer he is hauling and briefly what he thinks of it and it's amenity for bikepacking. More vids too please Cheers ;-D

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers mate, As with every setup I feel he has a bit of a love hate relationship with it. Being a trailer it’s super easy to pack but it’s big which means it’s easy to pack too much. I think we all give him stuff to carry 😂 A good point would be the fact you can unhook and go for a ride with an empty bike. We went and checked out a campsite once so he just hid the trailer in the bush and had an empty bike. I think when you have to hike a bike up steep hills it can be a pain with the trailer. It’s kind of like an anchor. Definitely easier with a balanced bike. I’m not sure what trailer it is but I’ll try get him to reply. That way he can give you some better feedback. I feel like it could be an eBay trailer. I know when he got it he changed the spring to different type that had a shock in it. He also went through and tightened all the bolts which proved to be a good decision. Another friend had the same trailer and the mechanism that connects to the bike came loose and he lost the part. Actually that brings me to another point, when we started bikepacking 3 mates got trailers. Ryan is the only one still using one. That might be enough to answer your question.
      Lastly he has been cutting metal out of it every trip trying to get it lighter and lighter. So far it’s been going good
      Hope that helps a little 🤔

    • @BikesnLikes
      @BikesnLikes 2 роки тому +1

      Short answer to your question is thats its a cheap and simple way to get into it if your bike isnt suitable for attaching bags / racks. It works quite well and has lots of room to put stuff in, but its quite heavy so can be hard work on hilly terrain.

    • @BikesnLikes
      @BikesnLikes 2 роки тому +1

      Ok, so now for the long answer.
      Firstly, everything that Tim said about it is spot on.
      Pros:
      - Cheap entry price (for this specific tailer; other lighter trailers can be quite expensive).
      - Lots of room and comes with a large waterproof bag.
      - Easy to pack.
      - Quick and easy to detach if you want to go exploring unloaded.
      - Its actually quite fun to ride with a trailer. I want to get another one and make it a train.
      You can take your bag out at camp, and use the trailer to collect fire wood.
      Cons:
      - This one is heavy. I think its about 12kg with the bag. (I have cut heaps of steel out of mine. Its really a cargo trailer and is a lot stronger than I need).
      - The rear wheel is small and skinny. It can create extra drag when going through soft sandy tracks or just really rough stuff.
      - It only comes with a QR skewer. Fine if thats what you've got, but I had to get a custom 12mm through axle and cost about $120.
      - The rear 'shock' is just a coil spring and carrier. It has no damping, which still feels fine but the trailer can bounce a bit on rough trails. (Not a big deal but its best to strap the bag in) I have put a Fox coil and damper in mine and it sticks to the ground alot better.
      - Some of the small screws come loose really easily. I have just taken them out, put locktight on the threads and reinstalled. They have not come loose since.
      Thats about all I think. I'm going to stick with the trailer for awhile. If i can get the weight down to about 7-8 kgs and run a slightly bigger and wider rear wheel it will be great. Especially for rougher terrain.
