Jackie's glamor was a refreshing change from Mamie's fussiness. It is unlikely that Mamie was interested in socio-economic issues. I do not think Eisenhower's involvement with Summersby was romantic. Eisenhower did everything he could to be a good husband, even preparing meals when he discovered his wife lacked the essential skills to be an Army wife. Like other presidents such as Lincolnn and Kenndy, Eisenhower had endured the loss of a young son.

I hold the highest of respect and esteem for Mamie Eisenhower. She was not perfect, but she deeply loved her husband, served with distinction and honor as our First Lady as she and Ike loved this country very much. People felt comfortable in her presence and liked her very much. Mamie has a legacy of honor, nobility of character, and, class in serving as a much loved First Lady. When people said, " We like Ike," during his campaigns for President, I believe that the American people were also saying, 'WE LIKE MAMIE TOO." The couple captures the hearts of the American people because Ike/Mamie won election to office twice in LANDSLIDES! It would be so nice to have another First Lady just like Mamie. Her memory is forever remembered and cherished for the great lady that she was.

@@sueannnatter5295but it was a huge hit in the '50s. It was right at the beginning of the decade that the long hair of the 40s, gave way to the awful short bobs of the 50s.

Thank you, really didn’t know much about Mamie although I was born in the 40’s. It must not have been easy to be a soldier’s wife all those years. There is a lot of politicking involved.

J.B. West, the former Chief Usher, wrote a book many years ago about his life with the first ladies from Eleanor to Pat.
Mamie seemed like she was the epitome of a SNOB and a controlling one!
I was left with a "Get over yourself" feeling.
