Another tip for checking if your AIO pump is dead is that you put a load on your CPU then feel the temperature of both tubes an you should notice that one tube is hotter than the other which means the pump is in working order as the fluid is circulating the unit correctly. However If you feel that both tubes are getting equally as hot then there may be a pump problem. Thats what Ive used to determine dead AIOs in the past anyway.

I was concerned that my AIO pump had died and I actually grabbed a stethoscope I had and placed it on the pump block, this works really well, you can clearly hear the pump running, even ramping up and down if it's a PWM pump, good tip! It's also VERY easy to over tighten CPU coolers, they only need to be finger tight if they don't have the limiting screws with pressure springs, I learned that the hard way, my pc shut down in the middle of a Windows install because it was over tightened so bad that it overheated and shut down

You forgot the possibility of a clog in the AIO system. Had one in my MSI form in the block that goes over the cpu. Was easy to fix but for a bit I thought the pump was dead already after only a year. Just flushed it out and gave it fresh fluid and it works fine now. I would like to add something to checking fluid flow on an AIO. Grab the pipes one at a time. When I grabbed them both, I couldn't tell if I was feeling fluid motion, or just the general vibrations from my six case fans and the three on my GPU. When I grabbed them individually, I could distinctly tell the direction of flow on both pipes. That told me for sure that it was functioning properly.

For the warning of when your pump failed, have HWiNFO run at low polling rate with only couple of temps (CPU/GPU, whatever is needed to be monitors) + pump RPM. If temps stay too high for too long or if pump RPM drops to zero/goes insanely high/is null then you can run a shutdown script for the PC, as well as probs a warning message popup.

One other thing, if it's an older system overheating and you're using a CPU fan, check the grills for dust and dirt. If there is too much dust inside of the fan grills, none of the air from the fan will make it down to actually cool the CPU.

I built my current system back in 2017. It has a 7700k and a 1080 and I play at 1440p and it's still getting the job done for me. It was my first build, so I was inexperienced. I bought a $40 AIO from Enermax, and it did okay for about 2 years then I noticed temps reaching 90c and above. Turns out, the pump had died because it was one of the AIO's from the bad batch that Enermax had where the pumps were gunking up. So, I replaced it with an Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo and it does a better job than the AIO ever did. Not saying air coolers or better or anything, just putting this experience out there in the comments for anyone that's experiencing high temps. Check up on your systems, people. Some people can leave their systems alone like consoles and have no issues and some can't. Better to be safe than sorry.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about the fourth most common way CPUs can overheat: Because the user's a filthy animal who never cleans their PC. I ran into that problem about a month ago. I kept getting dangerously close to shutdown from overheating (i.e. breaking about 208F under load, but around 128F when idle) so I powered down to have a look. I had a handy tool to hook up 3/4-pin headers to a molex connector and from there to a power brick with a switch so I could test each fan individually without unmounting to verify it worked. Since obviously they were all working I decided that before I'd go tearing into the CPU I should perhaps look at the CPU fan and... that's when I saw it. A solid mat of dust completing covering the cooler just below my CPU fan. I hadn't cleaned it once since I built this case about 4 years ago. It took me a good half an hour of going at that with a vacuum, cotton swabs, canned air, and even paper towels to clean it out. I finished cleaning all the other fans and reassembled. It worked. I now average around 88F idle and maybe 116F under load. Lesson learned: dust is an EXCELLENT thermal insulator.

Great vid as always Greg. “Fix or Flop” reminds me of Leo Laporte and “The Screensavers” from a very long time ago. You’ve got a “winner” with that segment. The move to RGB has led to manufacturers cheaping out on fan quality and prioritizing bling. I have some older non-rgb fans from yesteryear and they are outstanding in quality and performance compared to today’s mostly garbage fans. Not saying all fans are garbage today……….but if you got a great price…………more than likely poor quality. You’re better off buying higher priced fans. Sure……I like AIO’s also………but there needs to be a way to know the pump is gone. Also, the fluid tends to get “scummy” over time………..similar to that film that forms on stagnant water. That will also cause overheating issues. You should also push air through a rad rather then trying to pull air through the rad. In relation to PSU’s……….please……..please don’t use cables from another power supply. The pinouts are not always the same between PSU’s.

@@Buckheimer well i do actually worry about my gpu overheating. i dont like it when it hits 80°..... Yeah i dont like it even tho its fine at that °
I usually cap the frams or go for a lower graphics preset
And i dont want it to thermal throttle
It starts doing so at 83° it hits 82° in some games like
The witcher 3 and call of duty cold war and warzone

If you feel slight vibration on the aio pipe, mounting are fine, one of the 2 pipe is really hot, pump on full blast, that means the copper fins are clogged.
Happened to my ID-Cooling aio, somehow it doesn’t covered in warranty.

Best way to diagnose a faulty cooler mount is to open a real time temp monitor, press/hold down the cooler onto the cpu with a finger and check for temp changes

Remember the case when gaming 6h computer just booted. Increased case airflow it increased to 9h but still lost good progress from witcher 3. Reason was overhearing CPU VRM. I had to add fan to blow that hot air out from VRM heatsinks. I had towercooler (Artic Freezer A11 and I11. tested amd and intel systems) and it blow hot air direcytly to case back fan and also maybe created air pocket for VRM and preventing it to cool down.
    Edit:
How I tested. Prime95 and boot in 3 minutes. After adding fan it was running nicely over 20min when I stop the test.

When I noticed my Pump had failed, I held the tubes and noticed they were both cold. When the pump is working, one tube will be noticeably warmer than the other one.

While it's not a warning of the pump being dead per say, but the Corsair iCUE software does monitor both the AIO fans as well as the pump's RPM. So if the RPM is 0 on the monitor I'd assume that would be as good of an indication as any that the pump is dead.

One real common issue resulting in CPU overheating..... Improper case ventilation.
If the ambient temperature can build up too high inside of the case, then the cooling method for the CPU (and GPU) basically stops working.
I have ran into this a few times working on "fancy" PC cases were either the flow was too restricted or the case fans were oriented in such a way they canceled out air flow in and out of the case, resulting in interior air temperatures getting so high that CPU/GPU thermo-throttling and shutdowns occurred.
So, if you are working on one such computer and opening the case has the same effect of opening an oven that is running, check the case air flow.

Thank you. My pc Overheats on fresh startup up to 96 or sometimes 80s and it goes back to normal ( 30s) after a few restarts... usually like 2 restarts. I have the cool master 240 v2 with the 11900k cpu

About the warning when your pump failed. I've seen the option to turn on a pump failure warning inside the BIOS/UEFI when the board is equipped with a pump header. When the pump is not turning for whatever reason you'll either get a message on screen or a beep code (I've seen both). It's been a thing on ASUS, MSI and GIGABYTE but I'm not sure about the rest and I'm not sure if all the boards come with it.

20 years ago I bought an athlon xp 1400 and improperly mounted the hsf. This is way before we had tjmax or any thermal detection at all and I turned it on just to see the magic smoke coming out from under the heatsink. So…I bought another one and then tried to mount the hsf…backwards. This was when they stopped putting heatspreaders on the chips for better cooling and I…crushed the edges of the die. Ever since then I’ve been extremely careful with heat sinks. Just pay attention because things can be screwy without realizing it very easily.

4:15 that's a very good way to demonstrate thermal paste distribution. I'm surprised I haven't seen that from Gamers Nexus.
I'm switching my AIO to something air cooled because I've been using it for 5 years now and I can see the performance deterioration.

Something else to check, if the motherboard has the capability, is that the inlet air temp sensor is operating correctly, the servers I work on will power off a server if the inlet temp is too hot, if this sensor has failed or not reading correctly, I.e. too hot, then it will power down the computer.
