After seeing one of your videos a few weeks ago I gave induction forging a go. Just with some 3mm 440C. I'm only a hobbyist and my results were let's say 'patchy'. The master smith I work with had a good laugh. However, I was amazed at how easy the equipment and process was - I just need time to get the settings, coil size etc. right!! I found using a rest or guide made it easier to keep the blade in the centre of the coil. Amazing how you can really zero-in on the exact place you want to heat. No fumes also a win - excellent for small spaces. Thanks for the video.
Cheers David! Happy to hear you've already been inspired by Tobias and have played around with an induction heater! You'll notice that even Tobias uses a concrete block as a 'guide' to hold the blade for certain lengths of time, which let's be honest isn't very long, to get it to forging temperature. I've been using a taco shell coil for most of my forging work and switching between a small pancake for thinner profiles, very convenient! My first run with ApexUltra was exclusively done with induction!
@@UKBladeshow Mono steel! I wanted to take full advantage of the 15x40mm bar stock they come in and forge out a traditional tanto. I'm saving the rest until I can afford a proper heat treating furnace!
Fantastic video! Brilliantly edited and I think the balance of footage and voiceover was on point. The reverse sparks was a nice touch. Excellent explanations from Tobias. Very easy to understand the processes and why he does things the way he does. After watching this video I definitely think an induction heater is the way to go for certain situations. For example I have been searching for a maker space in London that has the necessary tools for knife makers without much luck. A forge being the main issue. I think an induction heater is a much easier tool for a maker space to have in their shop just from a health and safety perspective. It also doesn’t require the additional cost of propane. Just plug and play basically. I think a forge ignites something a bit primal in people that’s just fun. It’s like watching a campfire. But an induction heater just seems to be more practical when a space to safely use a forge isn’t available, especially if like me you live in the middle of London where facilities for a new maker are very limited. Induction heating is a stunning invention for sure! But where I live, South Africa , we have no reliable energie source ....😢 so we are stuck on gas, coal and a view hours of electricity on a day... I love You’re video's man ! Thanks for sharing !

Honestly right now I think it would push my electricity costs through the roof, but it would certainly make set up quicker and potentially just straight working easier because I wouldnt have any air to pump once I am used to it though. I want to try Apex Ultra 💪. I have a plate in my workshop, but I have some doubts to start The specifications say that steel can be damaged above 1100 Celsius. At what temperature do you forge weld? Is nickel necessary to weld or is it easily welded without the need to use nickel? Thank you very much and congratulations for your videos and your knives 🍻
Amazing work. Does the induction heater detect how hot the steel is? I'm pretty sure I could see temps in the 800c range come up but wonder if it's the temp of the steel or coil? If it is the coil how much loss in temp going from coil to steel?
Hi Robert thanks for the comment. I do not believe the heater that Tobias is using detects the steel’s temperatures, you would have to gauge it with your colour chart as a reference but it is not difficult.
Vinz is right, it does not detect any temperature. Also any temperature value would only be punctual anyways. If you want some kind of aid to estimate the right temepatures I would recommend a pyrometer. They are relatively cheap and work with any furnace of forge. They aren't super precise but enough to let you know if you are at the right temperatures for forge welding, forging etc.
65+ HRc for ApexUltra? Is that into CBN or diamond stone territory for sharpening? Very enjoyable video, Tobias is a very engaging presenter. I have to say I no longer want an induction heater, no coffee time is basically heresy ;)
Not sure with ApexUltra but I usually use diamonds above HRC 61-62 regardless. Personally find it allows for nice keen edges without the need for aggressive stone rubbing. This steel has 2.5%+ tungsten which I expect would impact sharpening. Am interested in Tobias' response. Have a great day.
You can definitely use diamond plates for sharpening. Its not necessary though. You can sharpen ApexUltra with 68Hrc on a regular Waterstone - I've tried shapton, king or a belgian blue and they all work nicely. The reason is the hardness comes mostly from the matrix itself rather than from the carbides in it.
@@Desmond18674 My Shapton glass stones (Al2O3) cut X50CrMoV15 that claims to be 55+/-2 like it's putty. I find these knives to be almost unusably soft. Same stones do fine on AEB-L knives I've made that have been tested by the heat treater to 60-61. Interesting you prefer diamond on the lower hardnesses.

Everything beyond 56 hrc is diamond sharpening these days... you can sharp You’re knives and tools on natural stones but they where out very quick ...
