Wow....incredible hunting...just shows what the Native Americans were very capable of back in the early days....Thanks for showing the skinning with the Obsidian stone...incredibly sharp!
@@stefthorman8548 No, not the aboriginals. What part of "stone age", don't you understand? The atlatl existed millennia before any humans reached Australia. The reason why it's associated with Aboriginals and native central Americans is because they were still using it when Europeans found them.
@@huntprimitive9918 hi ryan: I literally just ordered the trilogy. I am most interested in getting close to game. I shoot a recurve and want to get close. great video and i loved the commentary at the end . the spirit of being closer to nature is very reminescent of a day gone by where our values guided our lives and our path was narrower and straighter
Wow UA-cam tyrants have left this up. I just got an Atlatl and am trying to learn how to hit with it. I'm getting better and can at least throw it in a consistent straight line, but getting the trajectory right is tough. I either throw just over or right in front of my target. Great vid.
Excellent video. Despite all the differences in people today, this video show where we all came from and how our species' ingenuity and will power got us to be where we are today.
Boy....that obsidian flake...holy cow!!!..I knew they were sharp sharp, but to see how absolutely effortlessly that went through HOG HIDE?.....WAS NUTS!!!....LIKE BUTTER!!!.....WOOOW
Just awesome, you are truly a primitive outdoorsman, love your videos. I am going to order some knapping stone and knapping tools and try to make some stone points. I've made a few self bows and hickory with hickory back bows. made a few river cane arrows with turkey feathers, I also made an atlatl and dart from. cane. turn out great. thank you for all the knowledge you share.
Thanks a lot!,again good job on that hunt,it kind kf brings you back to paleo times when your on an active stalking hunt, and I bet you felt good when you hit the boar at such close range.Great video!
Well I had major surgery on my shoulder so leaves me out of spear chucking but I can tell you this not bad mouthing the guy but I really enjoyed this primitive style better than Tim wells modern version good hunt man and making the resin bowl was good impressed
I used to make a primitive pistol hammer and center with a wooden launch shaft and a short javelin, when I was only 5 years old searching for the truth of mankind's beginnings, our history outdated anything of Christ, we are victim's of imprinting but we are effective enough to attain proper judgement in the end (or beginning) thankyou for showing me my contraption and it's era.
As usual Ryan top notch stuff!! What are your dart lengths again with snd without fore shaft?? Is your fore shaft made of rivercane as well it appeared to be? Thanks as always for staying true to the old ways you continue to be an inspiration to so many of us!
thanks much. The dart over all is 9 feet long. The exposed foreshafts are generally 14-16" exposed with 5"-6" recessed. Forshaft is cane too and just a wee bit bigger than my normal hunting arrows.
I am totally amazed as to how you have grown as a man....great vid.....great knapping.....your father would have been very proud as I am! May God continue to bless.
I give you the up most respect for hunting the ancient way. Your not hiding in a tree with a spear, like some channels. I would love to go hunting with you in Africa. People in our village watch your channel. Your like a rock star.
In Oz the spear has no fletching and the thrower is in some places called a Woomera The Woomera has a stone flake on the end to cut with.It is a multi tool.often used as a club as well. The Oz spear is one piece and hunters usually carry around 3 full length spears. They are one piece so that when they stick in the animal has to drag it around during it's death run tiring it out faster. This is especially useful when hunting powerful kangaroos with can take off and keep going for some time. This video is great.Very interesting and congratulations on the hunt.
Nice kill! In Georgia we’ve always tried to reduce the hog population there very invasive. It’s good you took that female. I’ve never eaten wild hog but I’m guessing those back straps were tasty. 👍🏻 Also the way you took the animal was impressive.
I have a question, where can I find flint type rocks used for arrowhead knife and other sharp tips that you make, on an island of Guam that is limestone and coral. The native people here used the barbs of manta ray stingers that were durable and effective. They a also used rocks for slings and bolas but everything else was made from bones, sometimes the bones of enemy clans warriors that died in battle would be used.
Simply clean kill too I expected you to have a hint to get it like miles but no looked like it dropped just over yonder that’s a real interesting weapon
I hope all is well , I have a question for you , I'm going hog hunting in a couple months, what should I know before I go with my atlatl and darts. What size point and how long of a shaft would you recommend?
An older video I know, but how accurate can you be and what distance can you get using an atlatl? I've been interested in trying an atlatl since I saw my first one when I was a young boy, so you've got a new sub with this video. Maybe you could do a detailed video on how to make and properly use one sometimes and nice throw too!
I've already got a couple of those videos made up. they are on my channel but you can find them pretty quick here on my site. gillsprimitivearchery.com/atlatls/
Where can I talk to these knowledgeable folks? I’m looking to write a book including atl-atl usage, and would dearly love to get some conversation about the tool.
Im not hunting-friendly at all, but having said that, one feels such a deep conection with our ancestors, using this primitive weaponry. You are true hunters, indeed
looking at olimpic spear throwing l was wondering if any videos of such hunting maybe western eu usa throwing spear high and landing is hartd to make hit would be cool to see. maybe not using spear-throwing lever or atlatl is a tool that uses leverage to achieve greater velocity in dart-throwing, and includes a bearing surface which ...
thanks very much. No, unfortunately I lost the point. it penetrated out the opposite side of the pig and it broke it off while running. The grass was so high we'd never found it.
Ryan that was stellar, congrats on a successful hunt & nicely done video, you need a gopro on your chest for seeing through your eye's as well, more then one camera if one can do so, is always good, they have a new model ( Gopro Hero Sessions) that does good where other's had a bubble view, just seen your comment reply, it's hard without spending a lot to find a good camera where one can hands free film. your the atlatl hunting professional no one does it better then you best wishes

Do you use, or believe it was ever used with an atlatl a banner stone? I have a few and am confused about the whole banner stone ideas. Great video thanks for sharing!
yes, I have used them and they are handy for tuning the balance of the atlatl. I think I discussed them in an advanced atlatl video I did, but I may have to address it separately
thanks much, and yes, if you hunt private land you can hunt with an atlatl for pigs without a license. Atlatl hunting is currently not permitted on public land and hunting pigs on public land also does require a license and WMA stamp

What an amazing and accomplished hunt! GREAT job Ryan.
That was an incredible hunt Ryan. Let's get after 'em again!
how awesome man. I like to spearfish because of the thrill you mention of spotting and stalking- makes it more of a sport.
